Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – And a very Happy New Year as we welcome in 2012. 2011 was a turnaround year for Las Vegas tourism. We got The Plaza back, the new Tropicana, and Cosmo completed their first full year. We did lose The Sahara but their owner is swearing up and down that they are getting ready to remodel it.

We fell just short of the all-time visitor volume record of 39.2 million (hitting an even 39 million). We’ll have no problem busting through that this coming year barring anything completely crazy happening.

New Years Eve saw 314,000 people flock to town. Room occupancy hit 98% despite the fact that obnoxiously high rates were the norm. The recovering economy and New Years Eve falling on a Saturday night sure didn’t hurt. Neither did the stretch of warm weather we’ve been happening. Temps at midnight were in the low 40’s with no wind but if you’re in the middle of the crowds, it feels much warmer. This past week saw unusually warm temps near the 70’s.

Blink And You’ll Miss It – Regular readers know that I mock the New York City celebration every year (when compared to ours). I was actually at home under the weather this year (I’ll live… Las Vegas happens 365 days per years) which provided me the opportunity to view the New York City ball drop. Almost. At 9 PM our time, I was switching back and forth between Fox News (ball drop), CNN (ball drop), and ESPN (which was hosting a daredevil jump by a couple of Evel Knievel wannabes). I flipped over to ESPN just for a few seconds to watch the wind-up to the jump and literally missed the ball drop.

So let me get this straight: People come from all over the world to Times Square many, many hours early so they can be put in pens (like cattle) to view a 60 second ball drop. Are you kidding me?!? You wanna talk about a cure for insomnia…

By the way, New York claims that over a million people attend the ball drop. Guess what: Reports I read note that only 17 blocks around Times Square are shut down for the event. Which makes that million number a blatant lie. You simply can’t fit a million people into 17 closed off blocks.

Side Note: Every year I hear from a few unhappy New Yorkers about all of this. Hey, if you want to explain he logistics of getting a million people into 17 blocks worth of street space, I’m all ears. I know what the 250,000 on The Strip look like and they pretty much fill up 3 miles of boulevard.

I digress…

Fortunately, at 10 PM our time, both KLAS and KSNV kicked in to their extensive local coverage. If you read my blog post (last issue) about New Years Eve tips or followed us on Twitter that night, you knew that KLAS actually streamed the entire coverage and both stations put on a network quality show.

I’m in utter shock why the LVCVA (Visitors Authority) here doesn’t partner with one of them and a cable network and broadcast our celebration to the nation. Sure, the time difference would be a factor (we’re three hours behind the East Coast, two hours behind Central Time), but you’d still have a fair amount of people curious enough to watch in many parts of the country.

Don’t take my word for it. Check out the entire 9 minute video at New YearÆs Fireworks Over Las Vegas Strip û Complete Video

Lion King Record – Looks like many of you took our advice to see The Lion King before it closed here in Las Vegas. The show grossed $1,369,460 in the final week at Mandalay Bay, a theatre record. (It didn’t hurt that Las Vegas is getting more busy than ever and the week between Christmas and New Years is a heavy family week here). We want to thank all of you who went to see The Lion King during their run. They were a long-time sponsor and when you support the sponsors we list in this newsletter, you help us keep our lights on and Nevadan’s employed! Speaking of…

Membership Update – We’ve received numerous questions from readers wondering when we are going to our membership model ($23.95 per year). Probably in another 6 weeks or so. We want to make sure it works correctly and has no glitches or problems. Something we’ve decided to do is offering a money-back guarantee. At the end of your first year, if you don’t think the information we provide (plus some of the expanded Las Vegas savings info and features we’ll be able to start providing members with the new revenue) was worth it, we’ll issue a full refund.

Tale Of Two Cities – We’ll hear from a reader who said they visited and Las Vegas was somewhat dead, then hear from one who visited a week later and marveled at how busy it was. Here’s what most people forget: Las Vegas is a very different place depending on time of year, day of the week, and even time of day!

If you usually visit on the weekdays, the weekend Las Vegas will be a bit foreign to you (more crowds, harder partying). If you are a daytime person who is in bed by midnight here, you’d be amazed at how vastly different things are a 1 PM as opposed to 1 AM. Fremont Street can be especially varied as daytimes feature an older crowd who are there to gamble. But once the sun goes down and the free entertainment starts, the party crowd takes over. Especially the nice weather months (March – October).

Why The Hilton Name Change – Both the Atlantic City and Las Vegas Hilton hotels have had to cease using the Hilton name. Evidently, their franchise agreements were not renewed by the Hilton Corporation for reasons that weren’t disclosed. An article in the November issue of Travel and Leisure magazine seemed to point out the reason why: Hilton is working to reinvent the brand with hundreds of new hotels (many of a more boutique nature) and shedding the stodgy image that a property like the Las Vegas Hilton carries.

Don’t Text In Your Car Here – Nevada has joined the list of states not allowing texting while driving. If you get ticketed, you’re out $50 (plus I assume court costs which can run into the hundreds). Hands-free devices are allowed. I don’t even touch my phone when driving in the resort corridor. It takes enough work to watch for other drivers who are sight-seeing and pedestrians who don’t understand “Don’t Walk” signs (like they have to hurry to the next hotel before it closes or something).

No Skyline Change For Now – The condemned (and never opened) Harmon tower — next to Cosmopolitan — won’t be coming down in the near future. The demolition hearing isn’t until March. It will take all that time to get the finger-pointing taken care of, have a judge decide who is at fault, and decide if it really isn’t fixable.

Super Bowl – Right around this time of year, we start to get the “What is happening for Super Bowl?” questions. Information on various events has already started coming in and we’ll list it starting next week. However, don’t hold your breath on info for the hotel parties. For some crazy reason, they get us that info about three days before kickoff which leaves us no time to include it here (although we will get it on Twitter this year). Don’t forget, you can catch the breaking news and deals that don’t make deadline here by joining the nearly 13,000 people that follow us at http://twitter.com/AccessVegas

Welcome Absinthe – We’d like to welcome a new sponsor to AccessVegas.com and this newsletter: Absinthe! I honestly can’t remember a show that has opened here to as much acclaim and buzz. The show is simply out-of-control and performed just feet away from the audience. Imagine a Cirque show run by a wealthy, smarmy, profane sideshow barker (The Gazillionaire) and then let your imagination run wild. This show is on the profane side at times, so avoid if you have sensitive ears.

Right now, they are offering $20 off if you book at this special link: Absinthe Las Vegas $20 Off Tickets

Hi, we have been going to Las Vegas for over 35 years.

This year, we wanted to go to Las Vegas from Jan 15 to Jan 22, 2012. We were looking at going to see Celine Dion.

We booked the flight, then the Vdara. We later learned the Vdara wanted to charge a resort fee. We are not aware of ever paying any resort fees previously and in many situations we were provided with many extra benefits and sometimes free rooms.

The travel Agent called the Vdara to see if they would waive the resort fee as my wife and I do not make use of any of the facilities and never have with any of the hotels we have stayed in Las Vegas.

They would not waive the fees. Therefore, I canceled the trip and am booking Hawaii. I will not pay for something I do not use or do not believe is fair.

Just thought I would let you know as I have been reading your material for many years and you have helped me out in the past.

Regards,

Norm

Ted Responds:

The following properties do not charge resort fees at last check:

Bally’s, Bills, Caesars, Cosmo, Harrah’s, Flaminigo, Manderin, Paris, IP, Planet Hollywood, and most major downtown hotels.

This isn’t a Vegas issue. Quite a few (upwards of 30, too many to list) Hawaii resorts also charge resort fees. Some to the tune of $25-30 per night. Hopefully, you’ll end up at one that does not, but you might want to check.

I’m no fan of resort fees, but they are becoming par-for-the-course. Your best way to fight back is to only patronize properties which don’t impose them. As you are passionate about this issue, you may also wish to contact your Senator or House Member and ask them to look into whether these fees are misleading or not.

PS Hey, you read our newsletter. I’m sure you know more about Vegas than your travel agent does. Consider booking at AccessVegas.com instead. We have the best places and rock bottom rates in conjunction with our hotel partners!

Follow Up: Norm just emailed me to let me know they were changing their plans and will indeed be vacationing in Las Vegas!

Regarding the possibility of putting strip clubs in casinos, you said “Let’s keep the strip clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong.”

Here’s my idea; Let’s put the ultra clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong!!!

I (and a lot of other Vegas visitors I know) are sick of the way the casinos are focusing on the drunken, obnoxious, rude, rowdy, 20 something douche bags who take over the casinos either at night, or by day at the pools. Don’t the casinos want us gamblers anymore???

No comps, no drink service, no decent payouts, no respect!!! Vegas was built by us but we have been forgotten by the corporations who now run their little casino monopolies.

I would much rather have a strip club which only attracts men who will come and go without much notice, than an ultra club that is completely the opposite!

Thanks for letting me rant!!! love your newsletter!

Ted Responds:

No question that this issue has been coming to a head. When Steve Wynn spent nearly $70 million to build the Encore Beach Club, the complaints about “douchebags” and Jersey Shore (the reality show) types overrunning the property has become a serious issue among those who are there for the upscale gambling experience. One wonders if it played (even a little bit) into the decision to close the five star, five diamond Alex French restaurant at Wynn. The clubbers spend all day at the pool, nap in the evening, spend all night in the clubs, then nap in the morning. They aren’t sitting down to a 2 hour, $200 meal.

The clubbers and pool party goers are extremely lucrative. They pay steep admission fees, drink lots of $14ádrinks (with 30 cents worth of booze in it), and pay many hundreds/thousands of dollars for “bottle service” (where a $30 retail bottle of liquor is purchased for $400 and way up to insure that the guests get a private table). However, is it so lucrative that the properties don’t mind scaring off good gamblers? That seems to still be in question.

Cosmopolitan is proving an interesting study. They opened wanting to attract (in their words) the “curious class”. And to a point they have. Guests love their mixology bars, restaurants, and the club Marquee is a huge hit. The problem? This “curious class” isn’t at all curious about gambling! Which is having a significant impact on their bottom line. So much so, that they just hired an experienced Las Vegas hotel executive away from another property to help turn that situation around.

At the end of the day, you have to vote with your feet and play elsewhere. Which I know can be a very difficult concept if you are a comped gambler somewhere. They know you. They send you all those great offers. Other casinos may not.

My advice for people in those shoes? On your next trip, do half of your gambling at your usual place and do half of it at a “douche free” property that you enjoy (obviously using a players card so your play is tracked). Your normal property is unlikely to decrease your offers based on less play for just one trip, and you may be surprised at the offers you start to get from the new property you tried out.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! – I’d like to personally apologize if you visited over the weekend into the early week. Temperatures struggled to make it to 50 degrees F and we had numerous overnight lows below freezing. If you are a regular reader, you know that I’ve reminded everybody over the past few months that our average Dec. and Jan. low temps are 57 (for both months). Fortunately, we’re pretty much getting back to those numbers. And, that the actual temperature can easily be 10+ degrees of average.

Working Pretty Well – Posting the newsletter online (instead of delivering it in email) is a nice step forward. So many more are enjoy it because it doesn’t get caught in spam filters. Additionally, the look and feel stays intact for ease of reading. Even more importantly, I don’t have to kill myself trying to censor it. We have to use words like strip (as in Las Vegas Strip), casinos, gambling, poker, topless (as in shows) and similar. And those are some of the exact words which spam filters use to keep email from getting to you.

Sahara Officially Renamed – A Bloomberg interview with Sahara owner Sam Nazarian indicates that he will be changing the name of the property to SLS Las Vegas and the property will be remade as a trendy, boutique hotel. Which (as I’ve stated before) won’t work in that location in a million years. In related news…

Fon-Tain-Blu-(Goes-Boom)? – The Fontainebleau (spelled phonetically in the blurb title) is seeing quite a bit of hard hat action lately. As exclusively reported by Scott Whitney on Living in Las Vegas #133, discovery is being done to figure out whether it is cheaper to implode the building or take it apart and sell the steel. However, given the resurgence of the Las Vegas economy and solid projections of visitor growth over the next few years, I have to think that finishing the property is still an option.

I have mixed emotions. The building is very out-of-place for the location, boring looking, and and way too tall. Having said that, demolition would be a black eye on Las Vegas at a time things have really turned around. As always, we’ll keep you posted! Speaking of Las Vegas turning around…

You Don’t Say – Analysts are noting modest revenue increases for Las Vegas tourism in 2012 on the heels of gains in the past few months. We didn’t need analysts to figure this out. How about you walk around downtown or The Strip and look with you own eyes. Las Vegas is jammed again!

Biggest growth for 2012 will be in the affluent traveler segment. For those of you complaining that Las Vegas is becoming just for the rich (completely not true, and we give examples of room and food bargains on a regular basis), certainly the segment catering to the wealthier visitor will increase. Look for every steepening rates at places like Wynn/Encore, Venetian/Palazzo, CityCenter, and even Bellagio.

Regardless of the level of your accommodations, prices are on the rise. If you are even thinking about a 2012 Vegas vacation, I’d strongly suggest clicking over to visit our friends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals and enter some dates looking to lock something up. Waiting will only bring higher prices.

Many of you saw an article titled Is Nevada recovering? Depends on who you ask in your local papers. Considering that the article was written by someone from out-of-state, they actually did a pretty good job of nailing it. If you are on tourism, you’re probably doing fine. The sector is starting to return to normal. For those in construction, forget about it. Years will go by before the foreclosure housing is absorbed (prompting new home construction),áno resorts are on the drawing board, and we have a glut of commercial space.

Thank You Steve Wynn – According to a recent published report, it was Steve Wynn who at a routine meeting with Clark County (Las Vegas) Sheriff Doug Gillespie brought up the issue of how intimidating the pornslappers (adult escort service handbill distributors) were to visitors. Gillespie and the companies who do the “handbilling” have evidently come to an agreement.

Police won’t harass the pornslappers (who are protected under their right to free speech) if the distributors agree to doing things like not slapping the cards (which makes a noise and gets people’s attention), not shoving them in people’s faces, cleaning up after themselves and similar. We’ll see how this is going. As I’ve always noted, the best advice is to literally ignore them. Treat them like they don’t exist.

50/50 – Las Vegas is now attracting just as many female visitors as male. This is a sharp cry from when I first moved here in 1993 and Vegas was a “boys vacation” town. Lots more things for girls to do to get in trouble then there was back then…

Take A Ride On The Wild Side – Motley Crue is slated to do 12 dates at the Hard Rock during the months of February. This is an experiment to see if a hard rock act can make a residency work in Las Vegas a la Celine Dion. This won’t be a typical Motley concert date (which are pretty theatrical to begin with). They promise to use the fact that they’ll be in one spot (they don’t have to break the show down each night) to add all kinds of twists and turns to the show. Tickets are now available: Motley Crue Las Vegas Tickets

I live in South Florida and visit Vegas every year, sometimes twice. If they build a huge casino complex in Miami it would not change my visiting Vegas. I don’t come to Vegas for the gambling but for the shows, restaurants and fun. The gambling in second. Before I moved to FL (2 years ago) I lived in MD and seldom went to Atlantic City. Not a fun place. No matter how many casinos/resorts they build in the country there is still only one Vegas!!!

Doris Osborne

Ted Responds:

A recent pretty lengthy article in our newspaper was examining this, and the consensus agrees with you. The Miami developers are quoting crazy numbers when they refer to the visitors they’ll steal from Las Vegas. The same point as yours was also made: Las Vegas isn’t just about gambling. It is the excitement of the entire destination!

Don’t get me wrong: People from the east will take the shorter flight for a quick Miami vacation that involves gambling. But most likely not as a replacement to their Vegas trips.

Unless or until Miami or Cuba builds their own version of the Las Vegas strip with miles of gaming resorts, single casinos in various locals a round the country just wet people’s appetite for Las Vegas. I hate to sound like a broken record, but we’re on pace to tie the record for visitors this year and pass it next year. That’s not exactly a sign that other gaming destinations are keeping people away!

Just back from a two-night, three-day stay in Vegas, our first trip to Sin City in two years. We stayed at MGM Grand. No room matching our reservation for non-smoking and one king-size bed was ready upon our arrival, and my wife wasn’t feeling well after the flight, so we had to spend an hour in a bar waiting for a room (our paperwork, by the way, guaranteed our room by 3 p.m., but we didn’t get ours until 4 p.m.). After that, though, we had a great trip, with time poolside, a nice first-day hit at video poker, and an outing to Fremont Street.

My wife had never been to Fremont Street; I’d seen the same shows there a few times and would have skipped it myself. However, the new (to me) Fremont Street Experience shows (we saw the “American Pie” and “Tribute to Queen” shows, plus one more) were a pleasant surprise to me, so we both enjoyed the outing.

During our stay, we enjoyed fine meals at the Wolfgang Puck and Diego at MGM, and a nice lunch at an outdoor table at Trader Vic’s at Planet Hollywood. We thought we’d have a nice view of the Bellagio fountains there, but the view is better from the outdoor tables at Mon Ami Gabi at Paris.

We were very impressed by our first visit to Planet Hollywood. I’d never been impressed by the former Aladdin, but very much like what they’ve done with the place. I spent some time at the Planet Hollywood sports book and found it to be comfortable, with a nice variety of big TVs for football.

The only show we saw on this trip was “Zumanity”, which we thought was great. We hadn’t known about the comic relief in this show, and that really added to our enjoyment of the show. Maybe we just got lucky, but the audience members roped into the show were cooperative and funny…I imagine not everyone would be!

One final point about a merchant we’ve come to feel offers unique, beautiful jewelry at reasonable prices and with unmatched service: Bernard Passman’s black coral jewelry store at Venetian. On top of what I’ve just said, I can add that they stand by the quality of their jewelry without hesitation.

I enjoy the newsletter and look forward to each issue; I also look forward to returning to Vegas sooner next time, as our package at MGM included an airfare credit for our next trip!

Scott from Dimondale, MI

Ted Responds:

First of all, I need to note that we just found a bunch of great trip reports from 2008 that got orphaned in our system. This was one of them. Over time, we’ll be running those which are still relevant.

When you have issues with a property, I still highly recommend sending a polite but pointed snail mail to the hotel in question. I realize that complaining on social media is becoming more popular, but the ease of it often makes business more dismissive of it. For a long time I remember Wynn’s Twitter feed getting filled with complaints. And the response to each was “call us”. I mean… they can’t very well fix things over Twitter (or even Facebook). Do one better and write them and you might be surprised at how they’ll work to make it up to you!

Membership Update – We’re a few weeks away from going to a paid subscriber model for the newsletter. Unquestionably, our information and advice improves your Las Vegas vacations. When you know what is happening, where the deals are, how not to get ripped off and similar, you maximize the time you have here (which doesn’t come cheap when you factor in air and hotel costs).áThe price will be less than $2 a month ($23.95 per year). That’s less than the price of a soda and candy bar at your local mini-mart.

Why this change when we’ve been free for so long? Simple: When I started in 1999, there really wasn’t that much Vegas news to sift through (and the newsletter was much shorter). Over the years, the time it takes to read all the papers, magazines, blogs, news feeds, press releases and similar and distill it all for you has grown intense.

AccessVegas.com has suffered because of our attention to the newsletter. (For example, we just finally got a mobile version going, something we should have done two years ago). While we keep the site updated, the look and usability if more 1997 (when we launched) then 2011. We can’t do a really great job at both the site and newsletter with present staffing, and the site is our flagship.

This left me with two options:

1. I could radically reduce the scope of the newsletter and quit writing my parts so I can work on the revitalization of Access Vegas. You can get generic Vegas news from a million places now (if you have a zillion hours of free time on your hands each week to sift through it all). But, your feedback indicates that the key reasons you read are for my sections and because we distill down to all the important info. Or…

2. We can ask everyone to pitch in a couple of lousy dollars per month and not only continue what we do, but expand on it with special “members only” features we’d like to add over the course of the next year. We’d like to better address many of the common questions you have (which takes research time).áWe have a killer idea for a specialized app that will save you tons while you are in town. It will be free to paid subscribers. (If you aren’t an app type of person, you’ll have access to the information online in a members area so you can print it out and bring it along, or surf it on your phone or iPad).

We’ll also promise a personal response when a paid subscriber writes us with a Vegas question, which we don’t have the staff to do now (especially on stuff that has to be researched). We have the connections to get the right answers on stuff we don’t know off the top of our head. But not always the time to do so.

Hence, we’re going with option #2. We love helping you guys out. We just need a little help from you to do it properly.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! I’m still getting used to the end of Daylight Savings Time. The sunsets are amazing, but the sun is setting about 5 PM this time of year. This week, we are also dealing with the sudden end of “summer” weather. Long time Las Vegas residents will tell you that we always seem to have one definitive time in the fall and another in the spring where the temperature makes a sudden shift. This week started with highs near 80 and will end with highs near 60. Every spring, we seem to jump from the mid-60’s to the low 80’s over the course of just a few days in April (all temperatures Fahrenheit).

This is a special photo issue! Usually we post many of the great photos that readers send in, so this week it is our turn. We had Mark Jacobs out shooting photos of the aftermath of The Frontier implosion, over to The Bellagio for their Botanical Gardens Thanksgiving Display, and then to the new Planet Hollywood for the pre-opening of the Hawaiian Tropic Zone bikini bash! (Yes, he really gets paid to do this and no, we don’t have another similar position open right now). Links to all those great photo sets are later in the newsletter.

The L.A. Times did a solid, accurate update on how things are going with the Nevada smoking ban. The bottom line is that enforcement has been all but given up on. Bars have found creative ways around it, and a judge has ruled that violating the ban is only a civil matter. IE, the police aren’t going to do anything about it. This leaves a health department staff without the manpower to enforce the law responsible for trying to catch and deal with violators. The fine if you are caught? $100. The number of people fined to date? 0.

Because this story has generated so much reader feedback over the past year, we’ll continue to follow it. Those interested in the details can read the article Las Vegas bars working around Nevada smoking ban.

As this issue goes out, it is the Thanksgiving holiday here in the United States and we hope all celebrating have an enjoyable time with family or friends. This would be a great time to tell everyone you know about this newsletter. If you are checking your email at someone else’s place or have a group of people over at yours, gather a few around and share some of the Bellagio Thanksgiving Season photos we feature later in the newsletter. If they are Las Vegas visitors (or just thinking about visiting), click on over to our newsletter website and get them signed up.

Enjoy This Issue!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! The Frontier went boom with one of the better implosion shows in recent memory. Things have come a long way from the attempt to make a big show out of the Hacienda Implosion (Broadband Video Link).

We had various invitations (both official and unofficial) to cover it. However, we couldn’t hold a candle to what some of the local TV stations did (including 12 camera coverage in HD by KLAS Channel 8). Here are some great links to stories, photos, and video of the implosion:

The old saying notes “Out With The Old, In With The New” and our photographer Mark Jacobs captured this telling photo of The Frontier (as it is prepared for implosion) and of the new Wynn Las Vegas Encore Tower, which sit across the street from each other:

See more of Mark’s photos of the construction of Palazzo Las Vegas.

A quick follow up on my speculation last week of a future implosion at The Tropicana: I have a good source that The Tropicana is getting very serious about imploding their rear tower. This after months and months of The Tropicana publicly noting that their expansion would be built around (and incorporating) the existing towers.

This makes an immense amount of sense when you look at The Tropicana’s lack of interest in cutting a new contract with their workers union. Also, this would accomplish two other goals: 1. Give them much greater options about the design and layout of the new expansion and 2. Let them keep the casino and one tower open so they can continue to service guests and bring in revenue.

Monty Python’s Spamalot has a very cool V.I.P.P. (Very Important Person) Package that is pretty much unique to the Las Vegas show scene. For $159 per person plus tax, you get the following:

  • Premium Seating
  • A 45-minute “Secrets of the Grail” backstage tour right after the show
  • A commemorative Grail cup (filled with your beer or soft-drink)
  • Once-in-a-lifetime photos with cast and crew, set pieces and props.

As I noted, this is unique among Las Vegas shows (especially a show of this caliber). The tickets are extremely limited and well worth grabbing if you can get one during your visit. Visit the official Monty Python’s Spamalot Las Vegas show site for details and availability.

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the great photo! Despite the Flamingo Wildlife habitat being so huge, beautiful, and free to the public… it is still continues to be a “best kept secret” in Las Vegas. Finding it is easy:

Head toward the back of the Flamingo Hotel and out the back doors. Let them blow up The Frontier, but I hope that Flamingo doesn’t do away with this incredible area anytime soon.

My husband and I love getting your newsletters and boy, how we love your lovely Las Vegas. We have been 13 (unlucky for some!) times now. Planning to visit again in October. I am traveling to Vegas with a group of friends, both male and female. A few of them have never been to Vegas before.I would like to maybe get them to go dancing however the lot of them are not “club chic”. We are staying at South Point Casino/Hotel. Is there a club where us 40 somethings could go and not feel too out of place. Money is an object so paying for bottle service and such is out of the question. Help!

Denise

Ted Responds:

South Point actually has a fun atmosphere with various live bands coming through. One of our staffers is 40 and enjoys it on a regular basis. The first thing to do when you check in is ask what/who is playing there. Once in a while it will be a bigger act with a regular ticket price, but usually it is free or a small cover charge.

Mix at Mandalay (The Hotel) is usually free until 8 PM, and with the sun setting at 7 PM, a good place to kick things off. Also, South Point shuttle runs to Mandalay so your trip is free. Voodoo at Rio similar… go early and the cover will be free or cheap plus you get to watch the sunset and The Strip light up. Plus, a wide range of ages. Very important: Times and prices are subject to change. Ask the desk at South Point details on their club, and call ahead on other stuff so no surprises.

South Point is really nice for the money. Only downside is the shuttle ride to The Strip, but you might find yourself having quite a bit of fun right there on property. Also, the intersection it is located on has a mini-mall with really good (no frills) BBQ place, and the wine/liquor store in that mini-mall has free wine tasting on Thursday evenings plus a nice cigar selection for those inclined.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Last week was very hazy here, as a result of the massive California wildfires. Although it made for some beautiful sunsets, the smell of smoke was definitely in the air. Southern California sends a significant percentage of visitors to Las Vegas every year because of the proximity and I imagine we have many, many readers who were either directly affected by the fires or know people who were. Our thoughts are with all of you.

As many of you have seen on the news, long-time Las Vegas resident Robert Goulet passed away earlier this week. Those not familiar with his long career as a performer and singer might know him more recently from his Emerald Nuts commercial.

Goulet was one of a handful of world-renowned entertainers who actually made Las Vegas his home. Even some of the more famous names that perform here regularly at most often just rent a home or stay in a hotel suite just for their run. Jay Leno (Tickets) and Barry Manilow (Tickets) actually fly home every single night. (Yes, Barry Manilow is reported to fly in from his home in Palm Springs every single show. Up to five nights a week).

More importantly, he was involved in the community and extremely well-liked. Our local paper had these two articles:

Lots of reports that Barbra Streisand is coming out of retirement for the opening of Planet Hollywood in a couple of weeks. That is all we know. Do I care? No. Will we let you know more when we know more? Of course!

The redesign of the cocktail waitress uniforms at The Rio (featured in our October 17’th newsletter with photo) prompted a story in the Image section of the Las Vegas Review-Journal about some of the more sexy cocktail outfits in Las Vegas. You can read it (with photos): Ultra-Revealing

The Frontier (officially known as The New Frontier) will be imploded Nov. 13 at 2:30 a.m. This date appears to be very firm. If you have never witnessed a Las Vegas implosion, this may be your last chance in years. With the economy slowing a bit and construction already in progress throughout the next few years schedules on various projects (CityCenter, Frontier replacement, Palazzo), there doesn’t appear to be any new massive scale projects on the horizon that will require implosion of an existing structure.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for a great Newsletter, I get loads of useful and accurate information from AccessVegas.com.

I’ve had eleven holidays in Las Vegas in the last ten years and it gets better every time.

I took this photo of the Stratosphere last September, it’s not my favourite, I’ve got a great one of my husband eating a Fatburger!

Roll on Christmas day, we’re going again for two weeks!

Regards,

Steph Hansen (Salisbury, UK)

Dear Ted,

Thanks again for the latest newsletter. We’re always waiting to get the latest news. All the infos are really useful – regarding our last stays at Vegas. And we’re looking forward to our next visit (next year).

Greetings from Germany,

Oliver and Diana

Coming to Vegas. My partner is a country music fan. Any place in Vegas with country music please? Also, could you recommend any day tours outside Vegas (not very expansive)?

We did Grand Canyon last year. We are also very interested in the Monument Valley, but we know its too far from Vegas to go there. Is there anywhere with something similar to Monument Valley nearer to Vegas or the Colorado River?

Thank You,

Franrow (screen name)

Ted Responds:

The only thing really “country” left on The Strip is Toby Keith’s Bar and Grill at Harrah’s. The people running Gilly’s (formerly at the soon-to-be-imploded) Frontier have opened Stoney’s Rockin’ County. The good news is that it is huge, fun, and you don’t have to be a country fan to enjoy it.

The bad news (for tourists) is that it is down on the “new” South Strip about 7 miles south of Mandalay Bay. To get their on the cheap, you would take The Deuce (public bus that runs The Strip) all the way to where it ends at the South Strip Transfer Center, then transfer to Bus Route 117 for the rest of the ride. Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Wow, wow, wow… what a past 10 days here in Las Vegas. NASCAR blazed into town with record crowds (unlike the NBA All-Star game, NASCAR produced no shootings or significant arrests) followed by The Stardust going BOOM! The entire week saw highs brushing 90 F and March Madness combined with St. Patrick’s Day and Spring Break to make it one of the most crazy weekends of the year.

Add in the locals celebrating UNLV making the NCAA Basketball Tournament Sweet 16 (who needs the NBA), two more weeks of basketball March Madness, pool weather kicking in and Las Vegas is the only place to be! (Did it snow somewhere last weekend? We don’t shovel snow here).

Maverick Helicopter Tours In The News – Our friends at Maverick Helicopter Tours were recently featured in the local news article Why crawl when you can fly? about all the celebrities, high rollers, and even race drivers that they take care of on NASCAR race days. However, you don’t have to be a celeb or high roller to enjoy their memorable, top-quality tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon (including some that actually land in the bottom of the Canyon)! They also have amazing, beautiful night flights over the Las Vegas Strip.

Cirque du Soleil and Luxor executives are announcing details of a new production set to open at Luxor Las Vegas in 2008. I’m taking a wild guess that it involves magic and Chris Angel, but every once in a while, Las Vegas throws a curve. We’ll have details next issue!

Don’t Get Lost In Vegas – So many people tell me that they do rent a car when they come to town so they can travel at their own whim (valet parking is free at all Las Vegas hotels, and cab fares add up). They also tell me they would like to venture off The Strip a bit, perhaps check out some of the “local’s casinos” they keep hearing about, but are not real fond of driving in an unfamiliar city. If you rent from Enterprise, they are offering our readers 50% OFF GPS Navigation unit rentals at airport locations at Enterprise.com (Valid until May 31, 2007)

Gambling Talk: Poker Theory vs. Reality — Part One – with Victor H. Royer. In order to become good at any kind of game, poker included, it is not only necessary to learn the required rules of the game itself, but it helps if you also learn the game theory behind your game of choice, or perhaps the general game theory as that may apply to such relevant game concepts. Game theory itself is a universal concept that spans and transcends the human animal’s instinctive and innate propensity to engage in such activities, which we as sentient human beings tend to describe as “playing”, or “games”. Dear Ted,Visit 15 now over and back in NE England and reality. Still I returned with a gambling profit of $24 so I’m pleased. Saw some shows again and highlight was The Scintas @ The Sahara. Ultra-talented family + one group with truly excellent comedy and impressions and Chrissi Scinta has got one of the nicest singing voices in the USA. Joey and Frankie Scinta are two of the funniest around and Pete O’Donnell compliments with classy percussion.I recommend anyone who may be feeling down to see this show because the Scintas will lift you up as it did me. Next time in LV may be 2008 but The Scintas are my no.1.

On a down side – too many condos getting built on and around the Strip, before long there’ll be no room for new casino/hotels.

Keep up the good work Ted!

All the best from Owen (NE England)

Ted Responds:

I first enjoyed The Scintas when the started here at The Hilton, and have been thrilled to see them moving on to big crowds at The Rio and finally their long dreamed spot on The Strip at The Sahara. This is old school fun and variety done modern Vegas and I’ve never talked to anyone who attended that was disappointed. Here’s some Scintas info for everyone to enjoy for themselves:

Hi,I am retiring from my job after 20 yrs May 31st and my husband is bringing me to Las Vegas for our anniversary June 7th. I want so much to go see ‘O’, where can I find the cheapest tickets without being in the nosebleed section? Any help will be greatly appreciated.Mrs. Adams

Ted Responds:

Congratulations on your retirement! Unfortunately, there are no “cheapest tickets” as Cirque du Soleil’s O is one of the most in-demand shows in Las Vegas.

For any shows that someone really wants to see, we suggest purchasing tickets as far in advance as possible. Do keep in mind that some shows don’t release tickets more than 3-6 months in advance.

Also, given that the “good seats” are first come, first served (the farther ahead you book, the better your seats will be), anyone desiring the best seats possible for a show should book in advance. Even if some tickets for a show are still available the day of the show, you’ll much more likely to be in the last (worst) seats by booking last minute.

If you have further questions or want help deciding, please call our reservations agents at 800-696-5721.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Where did January go? I think most of us are glad to see it go. Way too cold! Things look good for a stunning Super Bowl weekend here in Las Vegas. Temperatures brushing 70 F are going to make it an amazing guys weekend for hitting the links and watching the game. Where to watch it? Anywhere and everywhere. Every TV (including many brought in just for the game) will be tuned to it in every corner of every casinos.

If you can get here, we might still have some rooms and tee-times open. Call us (toll free) 800-696-5721 and see if we can still hook you up. Short of actually having a ticket to the game in Miami (big game tickets still available here as of press time), being in Vegas for Super Bowl weekend is the next best thing!

Stardust Implosion – Local gossip writer Norm Clarke is suggesting a March 12, 2 AM implosion of The Stardust. However, no date is yet set in stone and likely not to be noted until the week of the implosion. If you were already thinking about coming for a few days in March, take the gamble and book that week and keep your fingers crossed. But don’t book based only on this early rumor. We will let you know the minute we know (provided it is more than a couple of days in advance), so please… no more “when is the implosion” emails!

Send A Postcard To Spread Cheer – Many of you send postcards from Las Vegas (and many of you enjoy sending our online postcards). Here is a chance to send one for a good cause: 8 year old Luci LaMonica of Las Vegas is fighting leukemia. She is an honor student who loves to study and her new favorite subject is geography. A recent local TV news story encouraged all Las Vegans vacationing in other cities to send her a card from that city. I’d like to take it one step further:

We have readers all over the world, and wouldn’t it be fun if she received postcards from the many wonderful cities and towns, big and small that you are reading us from! Just tell her where your city is, tell her hello, and that you hope she feels better. For a few cents and a minute of your time, you can really brighten up her day. More info on her and the address to send the cards is available at: Postcards giving hope to local girl

Gambling Talk: Playing Internet Tournaments — Overview – with Victor H. Royer. Most of the poker tournaments that you will play either on the WPT or WSOP circuits will be Texas Hold’Em no limit tournaments, and very few — if any — of the remaining land-based brick-and-mortar casino or poker room type tournaments will offer any of the other games, such as Seven Card Stud, Stud/8, Omaha High, Omaha/8, as well as some of the other interesting poker games. But you can play games like this, and tournaments featuring these games, on the Internet, and I have chosen PartyPoker.com has an example because that’s where you can find so many players participating in these tournaments that makes it worthwhile, definitely from the prize money perspective. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hello there,

We may need some help booking an upcoming anniversary trip in March. Should we just follow your advice in the newsletter? We’ve never been before but are very excited about it! At least two other couples are going.

Thanks for any advice,

Lorie Schultz

Ted Responds:

With so much to do and see in Las Vegas, don’t over-plan. You won’t be bored for a minute.

However, if you want to see a concert that will happen while you are in town, or one of the more popular shows, you’ll want to take care of those arrangements ahead of time. You can keep your eyes on our newsletter to see what is coming up in the next few months.

Important Note: Some shows don’t put tickets on sale more than three months in advance. (On the other hand, some like Celine are available right now through the end of her run in December). If you want to see a show and don’t yet see tickets for your future dates on sale yet, check back every couple of weeks, and especially check once you get inside that three month window. Then grab them!

Note: This was sent to us on New Year’s Day, 2007 from a visitor who was here in town. If you have your laptop or access to the internet while visiting, drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com and let us know how things are going!Dear Ted,From the lobby of the Luxor, we would like to wish you, your family and colleagues a very happy New Year. We are having a whale of a time in LV, having seen in 2007 on The Strip last night. Everyone was so well behaved and we had had a super meal in the Italian restaurant in New York New York. We were so impressed with the good behaviour of the crowd with the inconspicuous police presence, although very much in the background having made a vast amount of preparation for a successful night. We had a very relaxing coffee in The Wynn yesterday morning and today we’re off to the Stratosphere. Thank you for all your advice and we can only very highly recommend, thanks to your advice, The Maverick Helicopter tour over and into The Grand Canyon. The pilot, Paul, was superb at keeping us novices at our ease. It was a wonderful experience. Las Vegas is wonderful; we are taking back such wonderful memories plus plenty of snaps.

Thanks,

Pam and Mike French

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We had a short absence between newsletters. Every time we push the two week mark, many of you write and wonder if you missed one. We appreciate your loyalty, and if you read the October 25, 2006 edition, you have missed nothing since. New reader or not sure? Click on the above link to enjoy our previous issue.

Last week was a scheduled week off (from publishing). We went and paid homage to the Stardust and scouted some of the huge new construction at Venetian, Wynn and CityCenter. We’ll have updates over the next few weeks.

This week we delayed publishing 1. To not compete with the national elections which had many people riveted and talking and 2. We wanted to bring you as much information as possible to what happened in Nevada that may or may not affect you as a visitor and Las Vegas tourism in general.

Regular readers know that we are not a political publication. Hence, I am going to refrain from any commentary. Below you will find links to the major stories about the various issues related to Las Vegas and Nevada. Not into politics or just don’t care? Scroll on… this newsletter is jammed with the latest Las Vegas information you need to know!

I have been continuing to predict the following for quite some time: With all of the upscale new hotels and condo-tels, a couple of Las Vegas Strip properties are renewing their commitment to focus on the more moderate budget traveler:

Although the Tropicana is going to build a bunch of new towers and give the old casino and towers a big-time makeover, they won’t be attempting to compete with Wynn Las Vegas or Venetian. And after a year (or more) of The Riviera’s attempted sale, rumors of a sale, and plenty of speculation, they are digging in their heals to really remind people that they are an affordable option on The Strip.

The weather has been stunning, pushing 80 F and sunny on a regular basis. I’ll be spending the weekend by the pool. With major winter-type storms hitting the Midwest and flooding rain in my native Pacific Northwest, it is a great time to sneak away to Las Vegas!

Don’t miss our special section with links to stories about the closing of the Stardust at the end of the newsletter. Truly the end of an era.

Review: Second City Las Vegas

When life’s clutches seem to squeeze the soul for it’s last drop of vitality, it’s definitely time for a change of scenery- a reminder to make fun of it all and not take ourselves too seriously- a trip to experience Second City. This relatively scriptless, improvisational comedy show tucked secretly in a comfy showroom inside the Flamingo, packs a unique comic punch of which it’s knuckles don’t fail to graze anything- young, old, straight, gay, and grotesquely yet beautifully human. The final product is a show that literally puts all the fun back into mankind, dissecting the human condition relentlessly while exploiting everything at a satirical level off the charts. Gambling Talk: Poker By The ATC Method – with Victor H. Royer. I have been witness to poker plays which defy all logic, mathematics, reason or sense. Was it sheer bravado, or just pure luck? Was it really good play? How is it that many players can play with such aggressive abandon and win, and win, and win? Throughout the year I have thought about this. I have played in games and saw with my own eyes how players employ this way of playing and I was astounded by the frequency of their wins. I have tried this myself, and even with me it worked – some of the time. I surely am not an expert at this type of play. At least not yet. Click to Read Complete Article

Ted Responds
:

Andrew,

Although rumored for a New Year’s Eve implosion, the latest word is of an early spring implosion, using it for a grand kickoff to the construction of replacement Project Echelon Place. A New Year’s Eve implosion certainly would have been nice. However, the extra expenseá (crowd control and security) would have to be offset by a TV deal to broadcast it live on a network TV New Year’s Eve special. One can’t yet rule it out.

This is not without precedent: In the late 90’s, The Hacienda was imploded on New Year’s Eve to make way for Mandalay Bay, broadcast nationwide as part of Fox’s New Year’s TV special. We have that video for you in our streaming video section earlier in the newsletter.

Generally speaking, the loosest slots are in the “local’s” casinos around the Las Vegas Valley (you can’t clean the locals out as quickly, or they won’t keep coming back). Tightest are on The Strip, and downtown falls in between the two (according to regular state gaming reports which do not chart specific casinos). And generally speaking, the nicer the place, the tighter the slots. Those nice surroundings cost more to maintain!

Having said that, anyone can have good or bad luck in the few days of a visit. Play where you feel or seem lucky. Trust me, if I knew exactly where the hottest slots were, I’d be down playing them.

One last note: Sometimes slot attendants (what few that are left) or bartenders will point out “hot machines.” Bull. If they actually knew which machines were ready to pay, don’t you think they would be calling their friends, mate, or anyone else they knew to get in and play the thing? They only do that because if you actually do hit, you’ll feel obligated to give them a bigger tip.

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Readers WriteHello ,

I look forward to receiving your newspaper and finding out about all the changes in Las Vegas. My husband and I love going there for holidays the only complaint we have is that there are NO DIRECT FLIGHTS throughout the year from SCOTLAND. We only have direct flights for around 6 weeks in the summer which we did use last year. After that we either have to get a flight across to America then get an internal flight to Las Vegas or fly down to Manchester or London for a direct flight from there. By having to do this it adds a lot of journey time onto your holiday and especially on the return journey it is very tiring. Having to do this puts us off coming on holiday to Las Vegas. Even if there were to be one direct flight per week from Scotland I am sure it would be filled as we know a lot of people who do travel to Las Vegas and they also find it hassle with all the extra traveling.

I don’t know if you can suggest this to the holiday companies and see what type of feedback you receive. I know if the traveling was to be direct then we would visit oftener than we do.

I look forward to your reply and thank you.

Anne Rodger

Ted Responds – Anne,

Thanks for reading and visiting when you can. I know it is a LONG way to fly.

Airline flights are partially supply/demand and partially based on how many flights various governments allow between their countries. The best thing you can do is contact airlines that serve your area and specifically ask why you don’t have various direct flights to the U.S. that would be of interest.

Outside of a non-stop from London a few days a week (Virgin I believe), virtually everyone has to fly to the U.S. and then change planes. If you find out anything from airlines on your end that would be of interest to our readers, let us know. We have many readers in Europe.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! A couple of regular features are missing this week due to staff vacations, weddings (congrats to our writer Nancy Hruska who just tied the knot) and similar, but this is still jammed with stuff you need to know. In addition, we had our biggest streaming broadcast ever (scroll down for links) because so much is happening in Las Vegas!

The weather is in the 90’s and is scheduled to hit 100 degrees during much of this coming week with lows in the 70’s (F). The next time we’ll feel anything remotely resembling cool weather here in Las Vegas (anything under 70 degrees at any time of the day or night) won’t be until sometime in September. Pack your swimsuit and your shorts and leave the coats and even windbreakers at home.

Local Directory – We have just launched Local.AccessVegas.com local directory from Las Vegas. What makes ours different? Most online “yellow pages” directories for Las Vegas are run by out-of-state companies. We are here in Las Vegas and have the opportunity to modify the directory to make it helpful both to the locals and those of you visiting.

#1 Tip For Using Local.AccessVegas.com: Search by zip code (replace the default Las Vegas, NV in the search box with a zip code). Las Vegas has almost 2 million residents and it usually takes an hour (or more) to drive all the way across the valley. The key to local search is finding businesses in your neighborhood (or near your hotel).

Visitors, if you might need to find a local business like Kinkos, bakery, florist, bank or any other business that you might need on your visit, search by the zip code that relates to where you are staying: If staying on The Strip, use zip 89109 (The Strip) and 89119 (the business district closest to The Strip). If staying downtown, use zip 89101.

Locals, search using your zip code for best results.
