THIS ISSUE: Guinness World of Records Museum

EDITOR’S NOTES: I’m making a slight format change. Instead of providing a short summery of each story then linking to the full text, I’ll make a few comments on the more interesting happenings of the past week then have headlines with links to full stories.

I spoke with Vanna Lace (Penthouse, Miss Nude World) last weekend about her upcoming role in Skintight at Harrah’s. She will be replacing former Playboy Playmate Cynthia Brimhall and tells me the show is being revamped for her role.

Our video tests continue to go well. I found three short Las Vegas tourism commercials from a few years ago which I put back-to-back at http://tv.accessvegas.com/commercials just for fun. Word of warning: these will give you that “Vegas Vibe” and you’ll be booking your next trip here after watching them!

Finally, my apologies to the new Nectar restaurant at Bellagio for last week’s typo, where a typo noted the Dungeness Crab as “Dungeness Crap.” A number of you caught that error — at least you had a good laugh! If you try Nectar, please post your comments of the dining area of our message board at http://boards.accessvegas.com

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

FEATURE STORY: Guinness World of Records Museum

You have to go out of your way to find the Las Vegas version of this world famous Museum. And unlike the Liberace Museum or others that have loads of authentic items, this museum leans more on displays, facts, and videos. However, if you (or your kids) are curious about the world we live in, this is a reasonably fun and inexpensive stop on your Vegas itinerary.

You enter to a replica of the world’s tallest man, and move on to the world’s heaviest as well as the shortest twins. Then to food and drink: the largest shot glass collection in the world (seems appropriate for Vegas), replicas of the biggest fruits and vegetables in the world in a giant fruit basket, and information on a variety of food eating records. Although in a different area, that might tie in with the world’s largest “air sickness bags” gathered from airlines all over the world!

Other sections of the museum include graphical or interactive displays for tallest structures, highest mountains, entertainment and music, and space achievements. Of special interest were displays with videos of the world’s largest domino fall records that were fascinating to watch as well as a video of the worlds longest rope slide (two guys strung a rope almost a mile up a mountain and slid all the way down together on a pulley).

A special Las Vegas section notes the records set by the Luxor Beam (strongest light — can be seen from space), Stratosphere Tower (highest thrill rides), Fremont St. Experience light show, Hoover Dam, and others.

For sports buffs, they have an interactive sports record database where you can look up just about any record every set in any sport. This is part of a good-sized sports record display.

Las Vegas Guinness World of Records is located at 2780 Las Vegas Blvd. South (The Strip — halfway between Circus Circus and The Sahara across from Wet N’ Wild). Open daily, admission is $6.00 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, and military, and $4 for children under 12.

Ellis Island is on Koval behind Bally’s. Not only do they have great food specials (the ($4.95 steak is an “off menu special” last I checked — ask for it) and microbrews, but they are famous for the nightly Karaoke.

The name change to Adventuredome was just a marketing decision. I’ve lived here almost a decade and have not heard of serious injury at the park. You didn’t include anymore details or outcome. Both the park and the tram are operating normally and you can read our review of Adventuredome (with photos) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/circus-circus-adventuredome.htm

Much of the charge is based on the carrier the hotel uses, and you will find yourself getting zapped the same way if you make a collect call from a pay phone (hence, the success of those TV ads encouraging you to save money using their service for collect calls). We strongly suggest buying a phone card before your trip like the one we advertise at http://www.accessvegas.com/cogni-talk.htm and use it at pay phones.

Despite the recent helicopter accident, we suggest air (plane or helicopter) trips to the Grand Canyon. It is hours from Las Vegas by bus. You spend far more time on the bus than seeing the Canyon. We are going to be taking a ‘copter trip this fall and will have first hand reports and info then. I just haven’t had the time to take the tours yet! Red Rock Canyon is about 30 minutes from The Strip — worth the car rental for the day as it is well worth seeing. Info at http://www.redrock.org

Fremont Street Experience is a very safe provided you stay within a block or two of the canopy light show area.

EDITOR NOTES:

I was expecting a bigger negative response to last week’s “tell it like it is” articles on the pitfalls of playing for comps and gambling with slot club cards (which focus you on points, not how much more you are losing to “earn” points).

Out of 16,000+ subscribers, only two (2) wrote in and said that they use their club card and break even or end up ahead every year when they factor in the freebies. I thought that number would be just a little higher, but further shows that playing to “earn” comps isn’t a way to beat Las Vegas.

Yes, our city on sale (above) for the third straight week is Las Vegas. Our hotel partner HRN decides each week’s city, and for some reason they have left Las Vegas specials running for three weeks now. If you were debating, I’d take advantage of the specials now. I can’t guarantee we will have Las Vegas specials another week.

You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HOTEL FIRE – This just in: The Gold Spike Hotel Casino downtown (a cheap, rundown place downtown near Lady Luck) caught fire about 11 AM this morning. Seventeen were hurt attempting to get out, but none of the injuries were serious. The damage was confined to one room where a man and woman first reported their mattress on fire. Because of the 1980 fire at Bally’s (then the MGM Grand), Clark County (Las Vegas) now has some of the most stringent hotel fire safety codes in the world.

NEW LOUNGES – Caesars Palace and Paris Las Vegas have both jumped into the fray created by the success of V-Bar at Venetian (which we reported on a few weeks ago). Can anyone say “Bond … James Bond”? That seems to be the feel and era they are both working to recreate. Paris Las Vegas has opened Vamp from 10 PM – 4 AM on weekend nights. Vamp promises visually stimulating fashion, pulsating laser light spectrum and stylish, vogue lounge dancers with a cover of $15.

Caesars has Shadow, featuring contemporary designs with eclectic furnishings. What will stand out is the constant presence of provocative Shadow concierges. Visible only through a sheer scim screen, these multiple silhouette dancers will perform choreographed dance routines to original music and the mingle with the guests acting as lounge hostesses when not dancing. Shadow will be open 24/7 with the dancers in attendance evenings. Cover (if any) was not disclosed.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER – has been over for a couple of weeks now, but I found a good article giving a firsthand rundown of the yearly Las Vegas spectacle at http://www.freep.com/news/casinos/gam25_20010525.htm

PORN HANDBILLS – The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in a mixed opinion Thursday that The Mirage and Treasure Island are entitled to restrict the distribution of sexually oriented handbills on their sidewalks though they are used by the public. This is another step in the long fight between the resorts and the companies who pass out the handbills. The handbill companies claim free speech while the resorts suggest they have certain rights to the areas that front their properties. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-18-Fri-2001/news/16124818.html

SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing, we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there. Because of the very low humidity, you perspire greatly but don’t realize it because it evaporates off of your body immediately. Drinking booze dehydrates you further. Either way, we suggest stopping by the hotel bars on a regular basis and grabbing a bottled water. Your body will thank you, your stamina will by higher, and you’ll enjoy your vacation a lot more.

KIDS QUEST – The new Palms Hotel Casino (under construction near The Rio) is going to have a child care center. These centers are already popular at some “local’s” casinos around town. Story at http://twincities.bcentral.com/twincities/stories/2001/05/07/daily25.html

SOUTH STRIP – Recently, a continuing series on urban hikes in Las Vegas focuses on the Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and Four Seasons hotels. Included are good synopses of the attractions at each and worth printing out before you next trip. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-13-Sun-2001/living/16040904.html

HARRAH’S – scored a number of wins in the recent “Best of Las Vegas” put out by the Review-Journal. Clint Holmes (read our archived review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-02-21.htm ) was voted “Best Singer,” “Best All-around Las Vegas Performer,” and “Favorite Male Las Vegan.” He has also been inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame at the Tropicana (Hall of Fame review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-09-15.htm ).

Additionally, The Improv was voted “Best Comedy Club” and the Carnival Court was voted “Best Lounge.” The Carnival Court is definitely one of the more fun stops to party on the Strip, especially on weekend evenings when they have live blackjack outdoors to compliment the festive surroundings and live music. Discount Harrah’s rooms at hhttp://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Harrah’s link).

$100 REBATE SPECTACULAR! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you up to $100 back on any stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. (Full details and list of all eligible cities at http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL ). Claiming your cash is simple:

1. Print out: http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/coupon?SID=IVC&Dest=LAS&LKF=IVC&PROD=HOTEL
2. Book a room online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm
3. Send in for your rebate when you get home.

It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you get their low price guarantee
to boot!

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. FEATURE STORIES: Andre-Philippe Gagnon

The lights went down, and Mick Jagger hit the stage. Almost. Andre-Philippe Gagnon, “the man of a thousand voices” hit the stage backed by a tight four piece band and did a dead-on impression (both physically and vocally) of the Stones lead singer.

Gagnon is part impressionist and all comedian. With a repertoire of hundreds of voices from Sinatra to Axl Rose, from Sting to Barry White, he shows extreme versatility during the 75 minute show. After Jagger, he establishes his talent by rolling through Lou Rawls, Julio and Willie (in duet), and Tom Jones among others.

Then comes “Bill: The Musical” which is a hilarious multi-act “play” based on the Clinton / Lewinsky saga. Songs by Sting, Louis Prima, Barry White, and Marvin Gaye are twisted lyrically to make a nonpartisan comedic set that had the audience breaking out in laughter a number of times.

Taking a swing at pop culture, he noted the Beatles songs now used in commercials and proceeded to give us other “what if” examples in a medley of Beatles songs turned to commercials. He then proceeded to do the same with varied artists such as James Brown, Joe Cocker, REM, Alice Cooper, The Oakridge Boys, and Dire Straits.

A Gagnon show is like being hit with rapid fire bullets. He weaves together verses of different songs, seldom even doing half a song by any one artist. What makes it work is his talent, blending flawlessly from both the voice and mannerisms of one performer to another. His band must receive serious credit themselves for the ability to jump from style to style to style and sound great.

He pulled out the big guns toward the close of the show. Lest one think that his talent is based strictly on working to mimic famous talents, he picked a random man out of the audience and had this man sing a few bars of a song. Gagnon then replicated the man dead-on … with not just the vocal quality (or lack thereof in this case) but the cadence. He then did a duet of the song with them man, moving the microphone back and forth between himself and this audience member every few words. With eyes closed, you couldn’t have told the difference.

He opened for Celine Dion in 1998 for her world tour, and she has a part in his show. Appearing via video screen, he sings a duet with her using not his own voice but Sinatra’s. The result was very impressive. There is one more surprise involving audience participation, but I’ll leave this impressive and hilarious bit a surprise. (No one in the audience is embarrassed or anything — have no fear).

EDITOR NOTES: This will be the last week I publish “Kids In Vegas” letters. The letters are a representative sample of responses. It’s been a great debate, but we need to move on to other topics. We’ll perhaps revive it in a few months, but if you have not had a chance to put in your two cents, we still have the poll “Should people bring their kids to Las Vegas?” running at http://www.accessvegas.com Also, PLEASE remember that if you don’t sign your letter (we like to have your city also), we can’t publish it.

It is not my job to get in the middle of the “video poker pro”
debates. (Right now, there is great controversy among “professional”
video poker players about which pro’s method for beating the machines
is better.) I assume people are smart enough to check his stuff out
and decide for themselves, and I’ve had links to a number of other VP
resources listed for years on my gambling page at
http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm

I merely used Mr. Singers comment as well as an article by a noted gaming writer to back up my point and I gave credit to both sources. I firmly believe that slot cards are a downfall to 99% of the players who use them. They get people focused on points, not their bankroll.

For every video pro out there who tells people how they can break even
or make a few bucks playing video poker (putting tens of thousands of
dollars a month through the machines, and factoring in their comps to
say they ended up ahead), there are hundreds of thousands of people
who get trapped into playing more than they planned.

The average visitor is here to party and have fun, and if I can help
them from going beyond their gambling budget I feel as though I’ve
done a good thing.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

KIDS IN VEGAS – The R-J just did a detailed story about this and although promoted as the world’s adult playground, Las Vegas still offers a variety of things for kids to do. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Apr-22-Sun-2001/business/15892724.html We have a couple letters regarding kids in Vegas in the “letters” section.

THE NEXT SCOTTSDALE? – Henderson, NV (the SE suburban city in the Las Vegas area) has seen a 500 percent growth in new hotel rooms since 1998 and is now actively marketing the area as a resort destination. Close to Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the golf and high end resorts at Lake Las Vegas, Henderson looks to build more cultural events and a resort city atmosphere to attract those who might normally go to Palm Springs or Scottsdale. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Apr-30-Mon-2001/news/15853879.html

CULTURE – is coming to the neon desert a little at a time. On Sept. 15, New York’s Guggenheim Museum will unveil a new 63,000-square-foot, $20-million exhibition space at the Venetian Hotel. At the same time, the Venetian will add an additional 8,000 square feet of exhibition space to house masterworks from Russia’s State Hermitage Museum. Cirque du Soleil, the Montreal-based theater troupe, now resides here permanently in two specially designed $40-million-plus theaters. The avant-garde New York theater troupe “Blue Man Group” settled into a state-of-the-art theater in the basement of the Luxor Hotel. In January, the Smithsonian Institution, one the nation’s premier arbiters of high culture, put Las Vegas on its list of national cultural stops for art and architecture. FRONT SIGHT, NV – Gun owners are flocking to buy lots in this new master-planned community about 40 minutes east of Las Vegas. The 550-acre resort plan is built on the premise that 24-hour access to shooting ranges will attract law-abiding citizens and even the rich and famous to a gun lover’s oasis in the desert. FEATURE STORY: Skintight at Harrah’s

Skintight is 70 minutes of high gloss breasts and brawn, feathers and jiggle with a heavy Latin / Tribal musical influence. It is one of the new set of Las Vegas shows that doesn’t pretend to be anything but a show filled with fantasy to arouse and amuse.

The star of the show is Playboy Playmate October 1985 Cynthia Brimhall whose performance as emcee is warm and interesting enough, although she’s probably along for the ride for her marquee value more than any specific talent she lends to the show.

Skintight appears to be a reasonably blatant attempt to cross a “Vegas show” with one of the numerous strip clubs that dot the tourism area of town, and it succeeds. The Romanesque staging is interesting, providing a decent backdrop for a show that isn’t meant to require much thought.

One of the scenes actually involves bringing five men from the audience up onstage for simulated lap dances from the dancers, and one lucky attendee gets a personal dance from Miss Brimhall. While interesting, it stops short of being the bump and grind of a “gentleman’s club.”

The dancing is well choreographed and there is a fair amount of Vegas-style (after all, it is in Las Vegas) entertainment with a featured female singer (who keeps her clothes on) and segments featuring dance to songs like Ricky Martin’s “La Vida Loca” and such. The audience contained plenty of couples, and I imagine the fit male dancers (who at one point strip down to g-strings) were reasonable eye-candy for the ladies.

EDITORS NOTE: It has been raining for 3 straight days here in Las Vegas (much needed, but I know it dampens a usually sunny Las Vegas vacation). However, that is child’s play compared to the earthquake that shook Seattle Wednesday morning. My brother and his family live in the area, and I fly through Sea-Tac on a regular basis getting a connecting flight to my hometown of Portland, OR.

From my talks with people flying SEA-LAS on my return trips, I know that people in the Seattle area love Las Vegas and assume we have pretty serious readership in that area (all we have are email addresses — except for tracking country domains, I have no clue where anyone who subscribes lives). To our friends in the Pacific Northwest, we are happy to hear that the loss of life and injuries was very minimal, and wish you and those around you the best over the next few weeks of cleanup and recovery.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

SIEGFRIED & ROY – have signed their new “lifetime” contract at The Mirage. The new contract stipulates a 44 week per year schedule, and eight shows a week (down from the 10 they were doing). DANCE CLUBS – The Aladdin and Caesars are working to throw their hat into the latest casino trend to build high-end nightclubs. The quest is on to make Las Vegas the “clubbing” capital of the world, and people from all over the world are taking notice and counting the clubs among their reasons for visiting. Don’t bet on it: Despite being the 39’th largest media market in the country (larger than NBA cities Indianapolis and Orlando), the NBA wouldn’t agree to bring a team to town unless NBA sports betting was banned. JUST A REMINDER – Prostitution is illegal in Clark County, Nevada (the New Jersey sized county that contains Las Vegas). A Minnesota man was recently found dead in his Tropicana hotel room, the suspected victim of a robbery by a prostitute. FEATURE STORY: Mac King

I’m pretty happy. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a bad show. The odds are in my favor as I tend to review only established shows so we know they will be here when you get here, and if a show has been around a while (with few exceptions) it usually is making its target audience happy.

Mac King has been playing Harrah’s for over a year, shouldn’t need an introduction. He has appeared on television shows ranging from “An Evening At The Improv” to all five of NBC’s “World’s Greatest Magic” specials. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, upon seeing him you will remember him as “the guy who did the funny magic on TV.” And funny, Mac King is!

He takes the stage in a vintage plaid suit (vintage early 1900, not vintage disco era) with a story about a rope trick his grandfather taught him. You’ve seen rope tricks before? Not presented quite this way. From the first moment, you can tell that despite his sometimes silly demeanor, he has the craft of magic down.

King brings out an old fashioned chest containing his props and you never know what he is going to pull out of it next. Unlike Carrot Top, whose props are the joke themselves, Mac uses everything from worms to goldfish to a box of cereal to a stuffed tiger to perform “how did he do that” magic while leaving you laughing in the aisles. The finale is a “tribute” to Siegfried and Roy in which he makes both himself and a stuffed tiger disappear that reappear in a funny but spectacular way.

Eschewing assistants, King interacts with members from the audience using volunteers to help him in a couple of his more impressive illusions in this one-man show. It is pretty clear these aren’t audience plants. In fact, if you see this show the day or two after your wedding, you might end up on stage helping in the “Cloak of Invisibility” trick where Mac puts on a yellow rain coat, tells us to pretend he is invisible, then moves cards from the new wife to the new husband without touching either of them.

This is the best show deal in town. Period. You can’t go wrong paying $14.95 for the hour plus show, and the hour flies by. Plus, it is a perfect way to break up your afternoon gambling or sightseeing (or just recover from that “all-I-did-eat” buffet), give your feet a rest and your mind some refreshment.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

Last week, Cindy Hoplamazian asked if there are any good Chinese or Thai restaurants in Las Vegas. We appreciate all who responded. P. F. Changs (with a location in The Aladdin) was suggested by a number of people. Others had the following favorites:

China Town shopping area is on Spring Mountain, about a mile (maybe two) west of Treasure Island.

Lotus of Siam is a few blocks east of The Sahara Hotel.

Jim included the Shark Reef website at http://www.mandalaybay.com/entertainment/sharkreef.html and you can read our review (with photos) at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-07-12.htm Note: They didn’t have the “radio players” yet when we were there (something we suggested in the review) and I’m sure that adds immensely to the experience now.

I’m a big fan of Casino Royale. Their parking garage is a best kept secret (right behind the hotel, gives you quick access to Harrah’s, Venetian, Mirage), and when friends that like to booze come to town, I just tell them “Casino Royale: import beer and a shot of name-brand booze for $4.00 total.” Plus, the staff is very friendly.

The Rio buffet is really hit and miss. It was a novelty as the first “station” buffet in Las Vegas (different ethnic food stations) but pay the extra $3-4 and go to the Aladdin buffet where the food is topnotch and the decor colors don’t scream at you.

Thanks for the heads up. One of the definitions of infamous is
notorious. I was attempting to find a word that described the
wide variety of emotions various race fans felt toward him
(he was either adored or despised) and looking back,
I could have used a better choice of words. I know that NASCAR fans are very passionate about their sport and certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HARRAH’S – has done it right with their Carnival Court! This outdoor bar and grill at the south end of the property is a fantastic place to relax with friends and enjoy some live music seven days a week. They have moved Cook E. Jarr down there from the Improv room upstairs (a great move, and one we suggested back in May at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-05-17.htm ). You can catch his show for free at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, and more info on Cook E. Jarr is at http://www.accessvegas.com/jarr Next suggestion for one of the resorts: How about a permanent open-air club around a water setting like you find in many other beach and resort spots?

END OF THE INN – Gone. Done. History. The doors of the Desert Inn are locked shut, and the next wave of casino building planned will involve the north end of the Strip, with the Frontier and Desert Inn both slated for destruction and new resort construction at dates not yet announced. Hotel closing story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-29-Tue-2000/news/14261089.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-27-Sun-2000/news/14230478.html

TOP 5! – Frommer’s just published their Top 10 Travel list at http://www.frommers.com/features/articles/0008_2a.html Of note: The Orleans Hotel here in Las Vegas was rated America’s 3’rd best budget hotel, Laughlin, NV was rated the 5’th cheapest city for vacation, and our partners Hotel Reservations Network were ranked the 4’th best hotel discounter. Specific info on each:

Orleans Hotel – http://www.accessvegas.com/hotels/orleans-hotel-las-vegas-hotel-reservations.htm
Laughlin – http://www.accessvegas.com/laughlin-nevada-hotels-nv.htm

SUMMER IS OVER! – While that may not be the best news in much of the world, we are looking forward to beautiful fall days with shirtsleeve weather in the daytime and cool evenings (not to mention seeing our electric bills drop). If your good weather is starting to wane, no time like the present to come enjoy ours! Current Las Vegas forecast is at http://www.weather.com/weather/us/zips/89121.html

RESTAURANTS – A host of Las Vegas restaurant reviews have hit the press the past couple of weeks:

All American Bar & Grill (at the Rio) – http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/departments/07_27_00/dining_taste.html
Grand Lux Cafe – http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-25-Fri-2000/weekly/14218120.html

The Tillerman (Paradise Rd.) – http://www.scopemag.com/departments/08_17_00/dining_taste.html

COINLESS SLOTS – In a recent poll and feedback, most of you came out overwhelmingly against coinless slots. The soon-to-open The Suncoast Hotel & Casino in NW Las Vegas is opening soon and most of their slots will be coinless. Full story at http://news.excite.com/news/r/000821/18/leisure-slots While they are counting on it being a hit with locals, industry insiders conjecture (as our poll noted) that tourist wouldn’t warm up to them. For those wondering, we generally don’t cover news involving outlying casinos because the percentage of tourists who make their way away from the Strip or downtown are minute.

$5 FREE GAS – If you drive to town, the 76 station next to Monte Carlo has a coupon for $5 free gas with a $10 purchase. Print the coupon out at http://www.strip76.com/coupon.htm

KARAOKE – The NASCAR Cafe in The Sahara has joined perennial favorite Ellis Island Casino (on Koval, just behind Bally’s) as a hot spot for Karaoke in Las Vegas. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-15-Tue-2000/lifestyles/14151067.html

BEHIND THE SCENES – The Review-Journal did a rare sneak-peak at all that goes into making Mystere a constant sellout at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-22-Tue-2000/lifestyles/14079348.html

FEATURE STORY: Are You Ready For Some Football?

Legalized Las Vegas sports betting and America’s love of our football makes the fall one of the most exciting times of year here and this year won’t be any different. Monday Night Football is a Las Vegas tradition. From the little corner bars to the big casino sportsbooks, tens of thousands gather to put a few bucks on a team they might not even care about, drink beer, and whoop and holler for their team.

While virtually every casino and bar has some kind of Monday Night Football promotion, here are some notable ones. All are free unless noted, and remember that Monday Night Football starts at 6 PM on the west coast, so get there early to get a good seat and your share of the freebies:

BARLEY’S – This one is away from the tourism areas, but in one of the nicer parts of town and too good a party to ignore: 8′ TV screens, $1.00 12 oz. microbrews, $1.00 pizza, hot dogs, and nachos, and giveaways during every commercial breaks. Barley’s is at 4500 E. Sunset Rd — about a 15-20 minute drive from the Strip.

THE BEACH – Over 40 TV’s including 3 big screens in their 24 hour sportsbar. No cover and a complimentary all-you-can-eat buffet features hamburgers, hot dogs, wings, potato/pasta salads, etc. Beer and shot specials are served by their bikini beauties. Also, prizes and giveaways.

CIRCUS CIRCUS – Their Skyrise Sports Lounge shows the game on a 20′ x 15′ movie screen. The Miller Girls are present, and $3.95 Miller beer specials (that’s a special?!?!?) include a collectible 16 oz. team logo pilsner glass.

FIESTA – holds the party in Roxy’s and features all-u-can-eat pizza, first beer is free, cash prizes, and more. 12′ big screen and over 400 balcony seats. Admission is $6.95 and you must be 21.

HOLY COW – on the Strip across from The Sahara features special food, drink, and raffle prizes during each game as well as a cash bonus on 4-of-a-kind video poker hands during the game (rules are at the cage — I imagine you must be playing the machine max cards, no wild cards).

MAIN ST. STATION – Drawings from cash and prizes each quarter, parlay cards, and food and drink specials. Party held in the brewpub.

PLAZA – The Girls of Glitter Gulch host this party. A $10 betting ticket gets you a free Vienna hot dog, you can watch the game on a giant 9′ x 12′ screen, and they have drawings for prizes and $550 cash.

RIO – Club Rio puts the game on their huge ten foot screens that line the wall and features beer, food, cheerleaders, and prizes. They say you can “win awesome prizes, play video games, smoke fine cigars, and enjoy great food and drink.”

VACATION VILLAGE – Free giveaways every quarter, free parlay card ($200 possible win), free stadium food (peanuts, popcorn, cracker jacks), 50 cent Bud drafts, 50 cent hot dogs, half-time armchair quarterback contest, and ladies drink free in Kookoo’s Bar from 5-10 PM.

Because the majority of Las Vegans are people who relocated from other parts of the country, and we lack our own NFL team, many local bars have “adopted” specific NFL teams (often because the bar owners or management are from that part of the country). These bars not only pledge to show every single game of their specific team, but have food and drink specials as well as giveaways during each game.

The Review Journal just published their yearly detailed list of these bars at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-27-Sun-2000/lifestyles/14123757.html You are almost guaranteed a crowd of people from the “home town” for each game.

Continue to both follow our newsletter as well as checking the Events page at http://www.accessvegas.com/events.htm as the time gets closer. I usually don’t report on off-strip properties, but do make an exception for Sam’s Town and NFR because of Sam’s Town’s historically country theme. With so much to do on the Strip and downtown, we tend not to spend a lot of time covering other activities this area offers because most people aren’t interested in exploring. However, we are finishing a Hoover Dam report, and people that are on their 4’th or 5’th Las Vegas visits often do rent a car to go explore some of the natural and man made wonders. We do maintain a list of Non-Gambling Attractions at http://www.accessvegas.com/activities-entertainment-kids.htm

With Las Vegas, you take the good with the bad. Those from areas where every little aspect of life is regulated might find it bothersome that we don’t have tighter smoking laws and the like. But, Las Vegas is very much determined by supply and demand: if smoke bothers you (I am a nonsmoker but have learned to live with the air in some of the casinos), patronize those properties you feel have the cleanest air.

I too appreciate the comfort of eating at places we are familiar with. On my recent FL trip, I was tempted to do the “tried and true” but instead dined at restaurants that were unique to the area and I challenge visitors to Las Vegas to do the same. While this is a broad generalization, workers at the chain franchises are usually at the lowest end of the scale.

The casinos tend to pay better, provide better benefits, etc., and you are more likely to get better food and service in hotel restaurants, even if it’s just the coffee shop. (The food courts generally don’t count — they are franchised out.) Plus, keep your eyes open — many hotels have some pretty good food specials advertised on their reader boards outside and signs throughout the property!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

DESERTED INN – is what Steve Wynn referred to his new hotel as in his licensing hearing, and he said that it’s up to him to change all of that. In true Wynn fashion, he’s already outlining plans for a 3000 room, 5-star hotel for the site. He plans to “one-up” Bellagio with a property that centers on elegance instead of a specific theme. How he will finance this remains to be seen, but Wynn has indicated that he will always have 60% or better control and that success won’t necessarily be measured in the bottom line. Two stories with full details are available at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-08-Thu-2000/news/13733515.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-08-Thu-2000/news/13736035.html

CELEB WATCHING – will be at a peak at the Orleans the afternoon of June 16 for the Las Vegas Bowling Bash Benefiting the Urban Youth Scholarship Fund and Children’s Miracle Network. Scheduled to appear are Charles Barkley, Tracy McGrady, Drew Bledsoe, Allyah and Joey McIntyre among many others. Story and full details at http://news.excite.com/news/bw/000602/nv-las-vegas-bowling-bas

“LAS VEGAS” DODGERS – According to the L.A. Times, we are prepared to toss an extra $5 million bonus at the Dodgers to move spring training here. The yet-to-be-built spring training complex would be constructed in Henderson (SW Las Vegas suburb) and also include the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays. Full story at http://www.latimes.com/sports/times/20000608/t000054295.html

FRONT SIGHT, NV – is the new gun-friendly community in the building process about 45 minutes SW of Las Vegas. Featured will be 12 shooting ranges, an assault tower, 400 yards of training tunnels, 177 home lots, a convenience store and a private K-12 school. This is a town where law abiding gun owners can live among those who share their beliefs, and is conjectured that it will be the safest town in America. Full story at http://www.usatoday.com/life/travel/leisure/2000/ltl222.htm

MGM AIRPORT CHECK-IN – Just a reminder that the MGM now offers hotel registration right at the airport. You can get your room key while you wait for your luggage! This desk is located in the south baggage claim near the exit from the C and D gates and is open 10 AM to 2 AM daily. As always, you can book discount MGM rooms at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas.htm (MGM link).

MAGICAL HOMES – This Sunday evening, HGTV (Home and Garden cable channel) is doing a special on the homes of magicians. Scheduled are the homes of Las Vegas magicians Lance Burton and Mac King. Check local listings for time.

WINNERS! – Don DeLay of Elkhart, IN won the Las Vegas T-shirt.

FEATURE STORY: Harrah’s Range Steakhouse

Harrah’s really spruced up their great center-strip location with a major remodel over the past two years, and our favorite new areas are the outdoor Carnival Bar (to be reviewed at a later date) and The Range Steakhouse. While a quick, one floor elevator ride from the middle of the casino, it is a world apart from the pounding noise and bright colors designed to separate you from your money.

Two story glass windows wrap around the dining and lounge areas providing a panoramic view of The Strip including Caesars and The Mirage. Plenty of lush, dark wood and fine comfortable surroundings pamper the senses without being arrogantly disturbing. Seating is on tiered levels, giving you an unobstructed view regardless of where you sit. Table spacing is surprisingly pleasant … you won’t have to worry about backing your chair into your neighbor’s or having to listen to every conversation around you.

The lounge features gentle live jazz from a pianist or guitarist and is a perfect place to unwind while waiting for your reservation, or a pleasant place to enjoy desert after your meal. It is cigar-friendly, and the high ceilings and swift ventilation assure you won’t offend others.

Bring your appetite, your wallet, and get ready to try something a little out of the norm. Appetizers range from $7.95 for the “Half and Half” of Fanny Bay oysters and half littleneck clams to $13.95 for a traditional shrimp cocktail. Their Southwest Artichoke & Crab Dip is a signature item featuring lump crab, grilled pita chips, and soft pretzels ($11.95). Also available are Roasted Corn Crab Cakes ($12.95), Escargot ($9.95), and Smoked Chicken Quesadilla ($8.95).

Entrees come with salad and a side of their “famous cabernet mushrooms” (quite good) but soups are extra. You can choose between their signature Five Onion Soup with bagel chips and lamented gouda ($5.75) or Brandied Lobster Bisque with Maine lobster and creme fraiche ($7.25).

Their fortes are the steaks, prime rib, and chops ranging from the Double-Cut Pork Loin Chop ($19.95) to the Lamb Rack Chops ($32.95). The 16 oz. Veal Shop with caramelized pearl onions is a treat ($34.95) and the Blackened Rib-Eye Chop ($25.95) is served with pistachio salsa butter. Smaller appetites might prefer the 8 oz. Filet Mignon ($26.95) or the 14 oz. Bone-In Filet ($31.95).

You can add seafood to any entree: 7 oz. Lobster Tail ($19.95), Fried Giant Shrimp ($14.95), or 1/2 lb. King Crab Legs ($13.95).

Seafood and Poultry, while not their specialties are offered for those who’s taste runs away from red meat. Prices range from $18.95 for the Free-Range Grilled Chicken to $53.95 for the Australian Twin Lobster Tails (two 7 oz. cold water tails).

I enjoyed their signature 20 oz. Bone-In New York Strip ($29.95) and a side of Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes. Side orders offered also include Garlic Steak Friens, Asparagus, Giant Baked Potato, “Colossal” Onion rings, Creamed Spinach, or Wild Rice. All sides run $5.25

Service was prompt but not overbearing. My only complaint was that my steak was undercooked. I ordered it medium-well (the waiter confirmed that I was requesting it cooked with just a little pink left) and it was delivered on the medium-rare side. Granted, many of you true steak connoisseurs might be saying “Serves you right to ask for that done to a fine cut of meat”! I was hungry, it tasted fine and I enjoyed it, noting the error later to the wait staff.

We suggest going around or after sunset. Unfortunately, the large picture windows face west and while they have tinted windows and sun-blocking screens in place (retracted after sunset), it doesn’t make for the best view trying to look into the sun.

While no bargain, you get what you pay for, and it’s a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the center Strip. Plus, remember the my Vegas adage: Eating is cheaper than losing. If you are on a run of bad luck, toss your money on the dinner table and enjoy yourself!

Harrah’s Range Steakhouse is open daily from 5-11 PM. Reservations are recommended at (702) 369-5000

It’s one of the top shows in town — it typically sells out well in advance so you might want to get your tickets early and pay the online surcharge. Info on the show as well as ticket purchase is available at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?ID=23&amid=143&cscheme=5

The implosion has been put off at least until the end of the year. The owner is noting higher interest rates which put a damper on more immediate plans to build his San Francisco themed resort. The other San Francisco themed resort that was being planned for where the shuttered Silver City Casino sits (across from the Stardust) has apparently been scrapped. A Walgreens is scheduled to go in that spot.

Both hotels are owned by the same company and offer run-of-the-mill rooms. Nothing special but adequate. While not one of the newer parts of the Strip, the police have gotten better at enforcing curfew laws. The “bad area” rap has mostly come because a lot of bored teens were hanging out and Slots-of-Fun does sometime have a younger, rowdy crowd. There isn’t anywhere between Circus and Mandalay Bay that I would caution people to avoid. Each hotel has security cameras aimed at the street (not good business is people got mugged before the casino could get your money!) as well as both uniformed and plain clothes security at and near casino entrances.

As always, I would caution against walking more than a couple blocks away from the Strip or Fremont St. Experience. The exceptions are perhaps Convention Center (over to The Beach Nightclub and the convention center) and Flamingo Rd. (west to The Rio and east to The Maxim and Ellis Island).

Supply and demand. I don’t like it either, but guess what: I still pay it for the view and the ambiance (which is about all that there is to see now that Jimmy Hopper has moved on from performing).

When you are up there, you aren’t gambling and even with the spendy drinks (domestic beer starts at about $5), they would rather have you spending more time on the casino floor. Which is also my guess as to why they close down at 3 AM despite an often full house at that hour (especially on weekends).

SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing (Memorial Day weekend saw highs close to 100 and lows in the mid-60’s), we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there.
