Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist

Reviewed May 7, 2005
By Amy Rayner-Cooley

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be hypnotized? How about in front of a couple hundred people whom you then proceed to entertain for the next hour or so with the “suggestions” given by the hilariously funny Anthony Cools – The Uncensored Hypnotist? Let’s just say I’m glad that “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

Anthony Cools The Uncensored Hypnotist Paris Las VegasMy friends and I went to see Cools perform at Paris Las Vegas for “Girls Night Out” and we could not have asked for a better show to see. It was so funny and my friends laughed so hysterically, they cried. I wasn’t quite as privy to this hilarity at the time, because I was elected in my group to be one of the volunteers and was therefore part of the entertainment.

The show started off with a disclaimer announcing all of the four (and more) letter words that would be used during the show, and to get out if you didn’t like to hear them. Anthony Cools isn’t known as The Uncensored Hypnotist for nothing. Cools’ raw, razor-sharp adult comedy will leave you laughing the rest of the night. Click to read the complete review …

Matt Dusk – Is back in town, hotter than ever with an extended run at the Golden Nugget. The reality show The Casino on Fox didn’t fare to well in the ratings, but it brought Mr. Dusk to the attention of the public. He was interviewed this last week on Vegas Talk Internet Radio Show (you can click and listen to the archived show) and check out streaming audio and video of him at MattDusk.com

Wynn Las Vegas Photos: Part Two – 50+ never seen before photos coming next issue. Stay tuned!

Rainbow Bar and Grill Las VegasRainbow Bar and Grill Las Vegas – Opening June 3 at the Hard Rock Hotel. The opening for this weekend was pushed back in order for the “If we are going to do this, we are going to do it right,” said co-owner Jerry Greenberg. “We want to make sure that when we hit Las Vegas, we bring with us the look, feel and all-around atmosphere that comes with the history of what the Rainbow Bar & Grill truly is. Everything needs to be in place and perfect so that our customers will be able to enjoy every aspect of the building, from the fireplace lounge to the outdoor patio.”

Skintight’s Darryl Ross Is The Triple Threat of Vegas Adult Shows – He can sing, he can dance and he can act. He is Darryl Ross, a “triple-threat” entertainer, who since 2001 works the stage with the cast of Skintight at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Starring in Skintight, alongside Shannon O’Keefe, Ross surely keeps this cast “skin-tight” by meshing his stunning looks with his off the charts octave range and his soulful and sensual jazz background.

As if excellence in the performance of the arts were not enough, Ross was also an accomplished wide receiver for the Dukes, of the James Madison University in Virginia. Ross has starred in the motion picture “Toy Soldiers,” performed in “A Chorus Line” and co-starred with Frank Gorshin in “New York, New York,” before finding a home with Greg Thompson’s Skintight in 2001.

Bearing his American pride, Ross has performed for the U.S. troops in South Korea, Japan, Iwo Jima and Pearl Harbor. Since his Las Vegas debut, Ross has also been featured in a number of Playboy revues, wrote and recorded albums and has performed alongside rap artists like Run DMC and Ludacris.

Ross performs nightly with the cast of Skintight in the Clint Holmes Theater at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Glad to report that Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is stable and recovering. Medical news is limited, and he will have a long road to recovery, but things seem to look positive.

Been a fun week here! We enjoyed the opening of the Hot Rod Grille in Henderson, which drew a variety of revelers including The Amazing Jonathan, La Cage star Frank Marino, the ever-present Monti Rock, and a host of local celebs.

Wednesday night none other than Lance Burton turned up to see Twin Keys (see feature story) at Harrah’s La Playa Lounge. He signed a couple autographs, we said hello, and he settled in to enjoy the evening.

Soon after, two birthday girls got the special treatment as they sat on the baby grand pianos while all the men in the room were summoned to come to the state, get down on bended knee, and sing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling a la Top Gun. Just part of the fun and wackiness of a dueling pianos show! Little did these lucky ladies know that one of their serenaders was Lance, down on a knee singing and having fun with everyone else.

Lance will be on Hollywood Squares the first week of December, and we’ll remind you as it gets closer.

Hot Rod Grille – just opened in the Hot Rod Plaza in the Las Vegas suburb of Henderson and features:

  • Dining area designed in garage deco theme with elevated red and white vinyl booths and freestanding tables.
  • Bar features video poker, replicas of cars from American Graffiti, and a mural of a street scene car chase.
  • More than 30 televisions including five 61-inch big screens, including one imbedded in an authentic ’62 candy-apple red convertible Cadillac.
  • Restaurant interior is adorned with artwork by race car artist Kenny Youngblood.
  • Room for more than 200 cars for special events including Rod Runs and Cruise-ins.

Menu: Catering to every appetite, Hot Rod Grille features a variety of appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, breakfast items, pizza, pastas, steak, seafood, and more. Executive Chef Charles Gruber has served as noted chef at a number of top Las Vegas resort properties.

Hours: 24/7 (hey, this is Las Vegas). Breakfast is served 7 AM – 1 PM, lunch from 11 AM – 3 PM, and dinner from 5 PM – 10 PM. A special menu offering appetizers and sandwiches is available at all other times.

Hot Rod Grille is easy to find at 1231 American Pacific Drive, Henderson, NV not far from Green Valley Ranch, Sunset Station and other Green Valley area attractions. Click to read more about this hot new spot.

World Series Tickets – If you can’t be here in Las Vegas to bet on the series, why not treat yourself to attending one of the actual games? Our certified ticket broker has some surprisingly affordable tickets that will let you say “I was there!”

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the new Zumanity – Another Side of Cirque Du Soleil. Enjoy a streaming video peak at this adult Cirque du Soleil experience: Dial-Up or Broadband

Dueling Piano Twins At Harrah’s

Twin Keys is the only all-female dueling pianos show in the world. Even more amazing is that Twin Keys is identical twins blazing on identical grand pianos!

The twins, Kimberley and Tamara Pinegar, take the stage and have you laughing and singing along in no time. In keeping with the tradition of the ôdueling pianosö genre, the show is a high-energy, all-request, rocking, sing-along that incorporates audience participation and comedy (rated PG or R depending on the venue). Audience members are encouraged to get up and dance, as well!

The twins have been playing piano and singing since the age of six. They began touring as singer/dancers with a national corporate entertainment company. They fronted thirteen to fifteen-piece show bands at events and parties all over the world, including Super Bowl and Olympic events, parties in Barcelona, Maui, Cancun, Munich, Bahamas, Japan and Grand Cayman, not to mention most US states.

The twins have performed at parties for Reebok, Time, Sports Illustrated, Playboy TV NFL, NHL, Anheuser Busch, and the casts of televisionÆs Ally McBeal, The Practice, The Wonder Years and Picket Fences.

In 2000, Kimberley and Tamara decided to fuse their singing, dancing and comedy experience with piano to develop a dueling pianos show. Wonder Twin Powers Activate! Within six months, the brand new Twin Keys Dueling Piano Show was picked up by Disney Cruise Line and by dueling pianos clubs from the east to west coasts.

In February of this 2003, the show was brought to Harrah’s Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Twin Keys performs Tuesday through Saturday at 9 PM in La PLaya Lounge inside Harrah’s.

Kimberley and Tamara began playing piano duets at the age of six, but they had to share the family piano. Now they each have their own grand piano, so watch out ù ItÆs a duel you donÆt want to miss!

I mean a true Las Vegas show with beautiful topless showgirls, singers, dancers, and specialty acts where you get some serious bang for your buck. And at a price tag that won’t bleed your wallet dry when some Las Vegas show ticket prices are spiraling.

Splash is that show. Although around since 1985, Splash has successfully revamped itself every few years and the latest version is possibly the best yet.

For the intro, singers, showgirls and dancers perform high-energy numbers with choreographed dance ranging from street to jazz to classical. And there isn’t a bad seat in the house as the showgirls parade out through the audience and back. Read More …

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Summer is heating up and cold nights are a thing of the past with overnight temperatures rarely dipping below 65 degrees. We’ve been making the rounds: Sunday night we were at Carnival Court (Harrah’s) right on The Strip and we’ll be doing a photo feature on that soon.

We were at the grand opening of Skin poolside Lounge at The Palms recently and had a blast. Owner George Maloof continues to hit home run after home run with this hot new hotel property. You know we’d never leave you out so we had the camera and snapped a pile of great photos from this sexy new spot! Check them out at
http://www.accessvegas.com/photo-feature.htm

POOL PARTIES – As the weather heats up, a number of hotels are having regular pool parties open to the public! These are the latest details we have available:

* Skin at The Palms – The Palms opens up their resort pool area at 7 PM each evening. Cover is $10 but can vary depending on events. Pool attire is not only allowed but encouraged, although traditional club wear or resort casual dress is also fine. Four full-service bars, strolling entertainment, and DJ or a live band round out the mix. See photos: http://www.accessvegas.com/photo-feature.htm

* Big Al’s Fat Tuesday Poolside Parties – The Orleans pool party return every Tuesday from 7 – 10:30 PM. $2 for women, $5 for men and that includes two free drinks, hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres, and more.

* Whiskey Beach – at Green Valley Ranch opens at 7 PM nightly. Full service bar, swimming allowed, no cover charge. Green Valley Ranch has a spectacular view of the Las Vegas Valley from their pool area.

* Hard Rock – Pink Beach is evenings at 7 PM. More information pending. (We hate to publish secondhand stuff and Hard Rock has been a little slow with requested info).

* Suncoast – The Suncoast pool party returns every Wednesday from 7 – 10:30 PM. $2 for women, $5 for men and that includes two free drinks, hot and cold hors d’ oeuvres, and more.

* Swim-Up Blackjack – While not pool party, The Tropicana’s famous “Swim-Up Blackjack” has returned for another season. Pool guests can enjoy this game with towels to keep hands and chips dry as well as money dryers.

More to come and we’ll update you as we get concrete information!

HOTEL STRIKE – You might have heard the rumblings of a Las Vegas hotel strike. The great news is that all of the major gaming companies have come to a deal with the union. We understand those who haven’t do have replacement workers ready to go. These contracts expire June 1, 2002.

If you are the worrying type, we have a list of the hotels who have NOT reached a settlement at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm and you may wish to avoid booking those hotels until they settle or hire permanent replacement workers.

BEST LUXURY HOTEL – You only have a few more days to vote in this month’s “Best Of” poll. We are asking you which Las Vegas luxury hotel is best. You are the visitors — your voice should count! If you have yet to vote this month, poll on the right hand sidebar of http://www.accessvegas.com

CASINO BAR STOOLS – Newsletter reader and my friend Ken has a line of bar stools with casino and sports logos on them. Very cool stuff that lets your friends know you love Las Vegas or your favorite sports team! Check out an example and contact him about other items he has for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2107678672

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

SHOW REVIEW:

SHOWGIRLS – If it seems like we’ve been reviewing quite a few topless shows lately, welcome to Las Vegas. Nobody is putting Barney the Dinosaur into hotel showrooms. For those seeking some balance, you’ll be pleased to know that the next few weeks will bring reviews of Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and Mystere.

Showgirls is the new entry into a crowded Las Vegas topless show market. Not to be confused with the movie Showgirls or previously reviewed Showgirls of Magic ( http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/showgirls-of-magic-las-vegas.htm ), this show is the distilled essence of the showgirl segments contained in other shows.

The show features 12 showgirls, each of which has an impressive resume. It is a self-described “ooooohh” and “aaaaahh” show. The women look at the truly incredible different costumes in each segment and go “ooooohh” while the men see that the showgirls are topless in each segment and go “aaaaahh.”

This show takes us on a ride through showgirl history from the Ziegfeld Follies and early Vegas shows to Madonna and Britney Spears, encompassing a tip of the hat to all entertainment that includes elaborate showgirls and dancers. Each segment features incredible costumes and dance numbers which fit the theme of each era.

The show stars Sunny, who ties the show together with her parody impersonations of Mae West, Marylyn Monroe, Joan Rivers, Madonna, and Britney Spears. Hair and costume brings the true resemblance of the stars she impersonates. A side note: she is married to the show’s producer (something she jokes about once during the show), but nepotism in this case does no harm. She is attractive, sexy, has a great voice, and is an all-around talent.

As May West, she tells bawdy jokes. Her Marilyn Monroe works the men in the audience with the breathy voice. The Joan Rivers is a bit of a weak spot. Although perhaps thrown into because Sunny does a great Joan Rivers, this style comedy impression just doesn’t seem to belong in this show. She does rebound later with the Madonna and Britney performances, actually performing “with Madonna” (via video footage) and pulling off the youthful but sexy Britney nicely.

A nice added attraction is the showgirls exhibit displayed in the theater entrance. History of 100 years of showgirls features costumes, memorabilia, and stunning photos. A real live showgirl in beautiful, full regalia is also at the exhibit to pose for photos nightly from 10 – 11 PM (except Sundays). Put this on your list of Las Vegas photo ops!

This show is a perfect match for the Rio hotel, one that markets itself with a sexy Mardi Gras theme and was the casino that set the standard for sexy cocktail waitress outfits. The show performs in the Rio’s Samba Theater, truly one of the nicest facilities in town playing host to Penn and Teller as well as national touring comedians and acts.

Showgirls is a production show running nightly (dark Sunday) at the Rio hotel. The showgirls exhibit is free to the public (all ages) and open for viewing daily from noon to midnight.

Show tickets and show time information available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=377&cityid=1 Must Be 21 To Attend.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Yes, we are a week late. I’d like to tell I was playing hooky and enjoying the sunny 85 degree days but alas, the only tan I got was from fluorescent lighting as we continue to expand and upgrade our content. We started our “Best Of” poll (which will feature a new category every month for the next year), made All Vegas TV accessible to more users of various computers, and put up our brand new “New Year’s Eve” section.

We’ll talk about all that in a minute but I want to welcome Rick “Zig” Ziegler to the staff. Coming to us from Connecticut via Arizona, he’s already up to speed on the summer heat we’ll soon see, and he loves the tourism side of Las Vegas. He’ll be playing a major “behind the scenes” roll in adding and expanding our content.

BEST OF – It seems like every publication in town has their own “Best Of Las Vegas” poll. Some are legit but locals vote and most locals never go near The Strip. Others may anoint their better advertisers as the “best.” We are going to do it a little differently! Every month on the main page of http://www.accessvegas.com we’ll have a new question for newsletter readers and site visitors can vote on! You are the visitors — your voice should count!

We have put in a double redundant system to keep people from “stuffing the ballot box.” I get one vote, just like anyone else. You can always click on the “Results” link and see how the voting is going for yourself at any time. This month’s question is “What is the best luxury hotel in Las Vegas?” Go vote now at http://www.accessvegas.com !

TOURS AND MORE TOURS – Our expanded tours section is up. We have far more tours than ever before, plus great photos and specific tour details. Whether it is a quick visit to Hoover Dam or an all day adventure by Hummer, ATV, or even horses we have you covered. Plus, we aren’t going to screw with you. Many companies quote a crazy low price, then tack on the taxes, fees, and surcharges when you show up. The price we quote and let you book online is the complete price you pay. Check out all the great tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours and really see the beauty beyond The Strip!

ST. TROPEZ SUITES – I usually don’t mention hotel deals here, but this one is so good I might take a couple of days off and take advantage of it. We are offering this resort suite hotel from $59 a night. Where is it? How about right across the street from the Hard Rock, one of the hottest casinos/dining/drinking in town! You are 1.5 miles from The Strip, but with the money you save you can rent some wheels, grab a cab, or just take the Hard Rock’s free shuttle to The Strip (open to everyone). I’d look into this one now, before someone over there at the St. Tropez sobers up and yanks this great deal! Click http://www.accessvegas.com — the special is at the top of the page.

GREAT HAPPY HOUR – What will $1.95 buy you in Vegas?

* Half Pound Cheeseburger and Fries
* Onion Rings
* Jalepeno Poppers
* Buffalo Wings
* Fried Clam Strips
* Pork Eggrolls
* Beef Taquitos
* Fried Calamari
* Roma Tomato and Garlic Bruschetta

Where? McCormick and Schmick’s just east of The Strip on Flamingo at Restaurant Row (set back kitty-corner from Terrible’s Hotel). This place is becoming the unofficial hangout for AccessVegas.Com and ChefLive.Com crew and at those prices we don’t even bother to bargain for discounts. Specials are subject to change, run Monday – Friday; 3:30 – 6:30 PM and again later from 9:30 – 11 PM (close). No take out, $2 min. beverage purchase. (702) 836-9000

AIRPORT WINNERS – Two McCarran (Las Vegas) Airport passengers went home happy in the past month. While declining to release their names to media, each of these winners hit $1,000,000-plus jackpots waiting for their flights! On May 9, a Chicago bound passenger in Terminal 2 whacked “Wheel of Fortune” for $1.3 million and change. Twelve days earlier on April 27, another passenger took a “Wheel of Fortune” machine in Terminal one for $1.6 million and change. I’m guessing they both had no problem upgrading to first class with that kind of fresh loot.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – The biggest party night of the year is Las Vegas’ biggest night and now we over 100 photos plus streaming video highlights online in one spot. This includes new photos from this past year including the fireworks! In keeping with our “give you the scoop” attitude, we also give you the complete lowdown on just about everything you need to know to enjoy this huge event. Go enjoy our new site section at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com

FREE MAGIC – World-class close-up magician Michael Close has returned to the Houdini Lounge inside the Monte Carlo. A local favorite, he has drawn raves from Lance Burton, Penn and Teller, Mac King, and more. He performs each Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 PM until 1 AM. Houdini Lounge has always been a great place to relax and regain your sanity and this added bonus is worth seeing. No cover charge, must be 21.

UH-OH – I goofed last time. Larry G. Jones’ plays Thursday – Monday at 5 PM with his free show at Fitzgerald’s downtown. More on Larry “The Man of 1002 Voices” Jones at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/larry-jones-las-vegas-shows.htm

THE VIEW – No, not the female dominated TV show. This is the name of the new nightclub at Harrah’s. Thursday through Saturday night, Harrah’s Range Steakhouse is transformed into a nightclub with a DJ spinning music from the 70’s to now, dancing girls, and an appetizer menu. Not to mention the great view the venue affords, looking directly over the center of The Strip. Doors open at midnight. Guys are $10 and ladies are free. Proper dress required.

THE AMAZING KRESKIN – is playing Silverton Hotel and Casino now through June 9. Show runs Thursday – Sunday and tickets are $13 – 16. The Silverton is about 5 minutes south of the bottom of The Strip just down the freeway. Reservations and more info at (702) 263-7777

SCOTT AND JENNY – A big high-five to our magical friends Scott and Jenny Alexander who just inked a nice long-term deal to perform at Caesars Magical Empire (reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm ). This is a great show, and their permanent addition is icing on the cake as they are topnotch magicians. Jenny’s site is at http://www.jennyalexander.com

NEONOPOLIS – opened downtown over the weekend. Kind of. The theaters and food court plus a handful of retail shops have opened. The full slate of shops and galleries aren’t scheduled to all be open until fall. We are finally getting a Jillian’s at Neonopolis, which is good news for locals and visitors that like to have fun. Words don’t describe Jillian’s. Just go look at their site http://www.jillians.com

ALL VEGAS TV – We want everyone to be able to enjoy our streaming online videos of Las Vegas. However, with the various computers, browsers, and operating systems in use some were shut out. We now have alternate links for all of our videos at http://tv.accessvegas.com — if it didn’t work before, try the new alternate link on each video page.

WINNER! Carol Waller of McLoud, OK was the winner of our McCormick and Schmick’s $50.00 gift certificate in our All Vegas TV contest a couple months ago.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! After I sent out the last issue (April 6, 2002 – available in archives) I headed downtown to Fremont St. to have the Binion’s late night steak. (Whaddya think … I fly in to do this stuff? I’m live in Vegas 24/7)! Saw a print ad shoot for the new 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo right there next to Binion’s and the Golden Nugget, and yes they had the car out there. Bright red, with a blonde model sitting in it. You never know what you will see in Las Vegas!

Speaking of, Binion’s has reopened their original coffee shop downstairs from the casino after using the upstairs buffet area as a substitute for the past couple of years. They still have the full steak dinner for $4.99 from 11 PM – 7 AM and well worth stopping in for.

We are making a publication change. Nothing startling. This present twice-monthly, mid-length format has been unbelievably well received. However, breaking hotel specials and updates happen more than twice a month. So on the “off” week from the full newsletter, we will send our new Access Vegas Update:

A quick, simple one page bulletin of late breaking specials and updates to help you with your Las Vegas vacation planning that you can read in a matter of minutes.

E! MODEL SEARCH – Were we at the Maryweather / Castillo fight Saturday night? Maybe Tiger Jam? Heck no … E! invited us to Rain Nightclub at The Palms for the one of the casting calls of E! Wild On. They are looking for a replacement for Wild On host Brooke Burke. Hundreds of women from all over the West coast were interviewed in this hot new nightclub. Full details and info on coming casting locations at http://www.eonline.com/On/Wild/HostSearch We’ll try to keep you posted for when this casting special airs. In the meantime, E! airs all of the “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” episodes back-to-back May 4. Check local listings for time.

MAN OF 1002 VOICES – I’m proud to be one of the first touting comedic impressionist Larry G. Jones right here in this newsletter, and his accolades keep growing. The Las Vegas Sun (afternoon daily) just said “If you can’t afford Danny Gans go see Larry G. Jones.” That must be put in perspective as Gans’ tickets start at around $80. Jones’ talent is right up there and it’s nice of Fitzgeralds to offer this show at a one drink minimum. More info is on Jones’ site at http://www.lasvegasacts.com

For all the people who say there are no good deals left in Vegas … go enjoy Jones (Tue. – Sat. at 5 PM upstairs at Fitzgeralds), $1.25 beers at Las Vegas Club, 99 cent shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate, see the free Fremont St. Experience light show (top of every hour after dark), then finish off the night with Binion’s $4.99 complete steak dinner. Where else can you get a night of entertainment and food for less than a $20.00 bill all within 4 blocks?

GRAND CANYON – Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon isn’t at 20 minute drive from The Strip. If you drive, you have just begun when you hit Hoover Dam (45 minutes from The Strip). Hence, we don’t suggest bus tours unless you want to spend the majority of your day on a bus, only to see a small corner of the Canyon. And save Hoover Dam for a visit when you can spend an hour or two enjoying it.

We do suggest helicopter tours and are proud to continue our affiliation with Maverick. We could have gone with anybody, but Maverick is simply the best. Unlike many companies quoting bargain prices (then tacking on substantial “taxes and fees”), Maverick quotes you the entire price right up front. They have the best safety record, most comfortable ASTAR Jet Helicopters, and they fly further and deeper into the Canyon.

Your vacation time is very valuable and seeing the Grand Canyon is worth doing right. Many of the concierges at top area hotels call Maverick first. Check out the Maverick difference at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/maverick Like a good restaurant, Maverick flights fill up fast and early so consider booking online in advance of your visit. If you call, make sure to mention promo code “Access Vegas” to get our special rates.

FREE POOL PARTY – Join 105.7 FM Wednesday nights for Smooth Jazz at the Whisky Sky Bar by the pool in the Green Valley Ranch. The Oasis’ Gwen Abbott will be your host and have lots of Oasis prizes as well. Wednesday, May 1 features Turning Point including Native American, and Middle Eastern dancers. Wednesday, May 8th, Gregg Karukas will perform. His single, ôNight Shift,ö just spent two weeks at number one on the national Smooth Jazz charts. Parties are scheduled to continue on Wednesday evenings and the view from Whisky Sky Bar must be seen!

CABBIES – Just a reminder: Las Vegas cab drivers get kickbacks from various shows, clubs, strip joints and more. If you ask to go somewhere, they often firmly try to persuade you to go somewhere else by telling you that your selection isn’t as good. Also keep this in mind when asking them for general advice on what to go, see, or do. We have a host of show reviews online at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com so check with us first and make up your own mind!

CLINT HOLMES – launches his third year at Harrah’s. They have christened the showroom as the “Clint Holmes Theater” and it is a well deserved honor. He continues to rack up accolades with his mix of contemporary, pop, jazz, and calypso selections that make up a complete, fantastic performance. If you are sitting there going “who” or just wondering about his show, please read our archived review at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/clint-holmes-las-vegas-shows.htm

TRAVEL TIP – Sun Country airlines has resumed service post 9/11 and are hubbing out of Laughlin, Nevada (90 miles south of Las Vegas) on the West Coast. If you are traveling between cities they serve you’d be wise to check out their fares. Using Laughlin as a hub is a great cost-saver because of the isolation of the area (little air traffic or military airspace to dodge which means less time in the traffic pattern).

Sun Country serves Minneapolis, Laughlin, Orlando, Ft. Myers, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas (from Minneapolis only), Denver, Seattle, Portland, and Dallas. Their number is 1-800-359-6786.

CELINE DION – Yes, she is coming for an extended run at Ceasars. Yes, she is already living in town. Yes, the show is said to be moving along well. No, we don’t have a launch date for it. Yes, we will let you know the minute we know and make tickets available.

TYSON / LEWIS FIGHT – isn’t going to be in Las Vegas. Memphis, TN gave it the green light. If you’ve never experienced a big fight live you can check out fight package pricing and availability at http://www.thereservationcompany.com/trceppricing.cfm?amid=143&eventid=3

SHOW REVIEWS:

MIDNIGHT FANTASY – Las Vegas seems to have a topless show on every corner now. The old standbys like Folies Bergere and Jubilee have it as part of a bigger production. Crazy Girls makes it the centerpiece of a bawdy production. La Femme features the “artistic value.”

Midnight Fantasy has taken a different angle. There is just about as much topless time as can be squeezed into a production show, and even the comedian jokes about it being a “t*ttie show.” However, the Midnight Fantasy title doesn’t describe male fantasies, but female fantasies.

Each vignette starts with narration setting up a scene of a breathless female fantasy that is played out through choreography, staging and costumes. Although the limited stage keeps the props to a minimum, this actually works as fantasy is more about the mind and acted out by the dancers.

They have avoided the traditional “showgirl” look, instead paying great attention to the unique and provocative wardrobe worn by the dancers and cast. Red leather chaps and cowboy hats, rhinestone bustiers, filmy negligees and business suits are a few of the elements that add to the storyline. As the fantasy story heats up in each vignette, the costumes become more revealing.

I’ve got to hand it to the cast which features vocalist Charidy Sullivan LaFontaine, dancer / impressionist Sean Cooper, and comedian John Padon plus nine beautiful dancers. When there is a weak spot, whether with the main performance or the specialty acts, it can bog down an entire show. LaFontaine has a nice voice and connects with the audience on a solid level. The crowd fell in love with Cooper, who’s comedic impression of Tina Turner was memorable, as was his entire routine.

John Pardon had the standard “Vegas” jokes mixed in with quick-paced comments on life. While no Andrew “Dice” Clay he does use some adult language. But like he said … “Hey … what do you expect … you are at a t*ttie show.” The cast of dancers and choreography was strong throughout the performance, something not always expected from a mid-priced show. Because the show delves into female fantasies from a woman’s prespective, Midnight Fantasy is a fine couples show (provided the lady is comfortable with this subject matter to begin with).

Midnight Fantasy is a production show running nightly (dark Monday) at the Luxor hotel. Pricing and advance reservations available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=197&cityid=1

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

We are rolling into March here in Las Vegas! The weather has been pushing 70 degrees for a week now, and slated to be right around 70 for the next 10 days at least. Remember a jacket for the evenings.

All Vegas TV March episode is online at http://tv.accessvegas.com and a great episode it is this month! We covered the grand reopening of Wolfgang Puck’s Spago Las Vegas and Mr. Puck was very gracious in granting us a nice interview. We also have a feature on Showgirls of Magic playing at the San Remo, including an interview with showgirl Theresa Marie. Guys, don’t miss this one! I’ve also included the print review of Showgirls of Magic later in this issue.

Our friend Cook E. Jarr is back from his winter break on March 15’th, resuming his midnight shows on Friday and Saturday nights outside at the Carnival Court at Harrah’s. Cook is ageless, but his crowds get younger and younger every year to enjoy his versions of standards, “old school” hip-hop, pop and dance from today’s charts, and more. It is no coincidence that he’s back in action when Spring Break cranks up in Las Vegas and you’d better believe we’ll be covering him on All Vegas TV in the near future! If you are going “Who is Cook E. Jarr” then check out http://www.accessvegas.com/jarr

NASCAR Fans: You still have time to book a trip to get from your hotel to the track like the drivers do — in a helicopter from The Strip straight to the speedway. My friend John Buch from Maverick Helicopters has arranged great rates for our readers. Contact him directly for details at (click) mailto:john@maverickhelicopter.com Make sure to ask for Access Vegas rates and act quickly — as you may guess, availability is getting very limited.

“Tony ‘n’ Tina’s Wedding” has launched at The Rio. This is a true version of the long running Off-Broadway show. The interactive dinner theater concept has the audience attending an “actual” wedding ceremony, reception, guests, and plenty of improv on the part of the actors. Ticket and show info available at http://www.vegasguide.com/detail_shows.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&id=162

The Bellagio appears to be going after Binion’s Horseshoe to take the title as THE poker place in Las Vegas. Nine different tournaments are slated for this year with buy-ins ranging from $3-10,000 depending on the tournament. Unlike Binion’s World Series of Poker (which lasts for weeks), these are going to be short tournaments taking only a few days.

Speaking of tournaments, the Las Vegas Hilton has just announced a $1 Million blackjack tournament to take place in 12 monthly rounds over the next year. Entry fee is $1000 and includes two nights lodging and other goodies. Each month, 16 players will advance to the finals and eight players will be chosen in a wild card drawing. Contact the Las Vegas Hilton at (800) 457-3307 for more info.

Syndicated radio “hot talker” Tom Leykis does his show live from The Palms Resort Friday, March 8. I’d love to tell you more, but the local affiliate didn’t have specifics as we go to press, nor has The Palms sent out a press release yet. If the broadcast isn’t available in your area, you can tune online his Phoenix affiliate KFNX live March 8 from 3-7 PM Pacific at http://www.renaissanceradio.com (simply click on the KFNX “Listen Life” button). If you are in Las Vegas, Leykis airs on 1140 AM on tape delay starting at 4 PM Pacific.

Would you do me a great big favor and take just 15 seconds of your time to forward this newsletter to one person right now while you are thinking about it (more if you like!)? That would be greatly appreciated and would help us keep our marketing costs down! Thanks in advance!

Showgirls Of Magic:

I won’t deny that I’m pretty jaded. I know virtually every casino layout like the back of my hand, and have seen almost every single show, some multiple times. All Vegas TV reporter Elizabeth Rizzo will confirm that I was checking my watch during a recent visit to EFX, and this despite the fact that Rick Springfield has kicked it up a notch and EFX is once again a show worth seeing.

This makes it an even more pleasant surprise when I run across a show that delivers the goods for a decent price, and Showgirls of Magic keeps the promise. Take an intimate showroom, four beautiful ladies, magic, dancing, and hilarious specialty acts you are have a winner. You won’t be checking your watch — you’ll be forgetting time exists enjoying this fast-paced entertainment.

Showgirls have been a part of Las Vegas since the Rat Pack days and before, but generally in “window dressing” capacity. This is one of the first real attempts to capitalize on the complete performing talents of a set of showgirls and actually make them the stars of a magic revue. It’s worked unusually well as they run through a variety of eyebrow-raising illusions such as Houdini’s Metamorphosis, levitation, and a double rendition of “sawing the girl in half” with an interesting clothing switch thrown in.

Because of the modest showroom size, you won’t see larger-than-life scale illusions but this actually works in their favor. When sitting 42 rows back in the middle of 3000 people, it is tough to tell what is truly happening on stage (with regard to “magician’s secrets”). Here, you are close enough to see the area around the illusions and see the entire stage. If you ever thought these tricks were just camera angles when you saw them on TV, now is the chance to be truly mystified “right before your very eyes.”

Long time cast member Antonio Hoyos, one of the specialty acts, provides comic relief as “The Great Antoine.” Hoyos is “vertically challenged” and his mime-like shtick as a second-rate vaudeville magician provides some good laughs. Showgirls also features other specialty magic acts in addition to Hoyos which are subject to change, as many seem to rotate from one show to another. However, they always seem to get top acts.

Although the magic is great, they give equal attention to the “showgirls” moniker with well choreographed dance numbers performed in a variety of sexy costumes (topless during the second show). For a smaller showroom, they have gone to great care to provide good lighting and sound to give the show a “big production” feel.

Showgirls of Magic features both family (covered) and topless performances. It is the same great show, but geared at slightly different audiences. The covered version is still sexy with some bare buns and double entendres from the comedy acts, but generally suitable for both teens and grandma.

The topless performances (later show) tend to draw more of the “party crowd” specifically looking for the classy adult entertainment that Las Vegas is now known for. The dancers are naturally beautiful, fun, sexy, and tasteful. Although NOT a strip club atmosphere, the topless show is a good alternative to hitting a strip club for that group of guys out on the town. Everyone will have fun, no one will have to lie to their wife, and the ticket price still leaves plenty of cash in your wallet.

Showgirls of Magic plays at the San Remo Hotel Casino, just across from the main entrance to the MGM on Tropicana Avenue (next door to Tropicana Hotel). Side Note: The San Remo is a “best kept secret” as a nice, comfortable, slightly upscale property with great dining values and a friendly staff.

Showgirls of Magic is a production show (six nights a week) with a very moderate ticket price, providing one of Las Vegas’ great show values. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=5&showid=253 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

GUGGENHEIM LAS VEGAS – now open at The Venetian:

The inaugural exhibition of the Guggenheim Las Vegas is The Art of the Motorcycle, which was first presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1998. With more than 130 motorcycles on display, the exhibition chronicles the most compelling moments in motorcycle design and technology-from its humble beginnings as a steam-powered vehicle to the sophisticated state of motorcycle production today.

The exhibition both explores and celebrates the motorcycle as a quintessential symbol of the Modern age. The installation, designed by architect Frank Gehry, responds both to the scale of Koolhaas’s Guggenheim Las Vegas and to the materials of the motorcycles themselves. Gehry’s building-within-a-building features enormous, curved polished stainless steel walls, towering chain-link curtains, glass floors and partitions, large-scale graphics, and a sophisticated interpretation of the curators’ narrative.

Museum Admission:ááá $15 adults, $11 students, $7 children ages 6-12, free children under 6 and museum members.
Museum Hours: 9 am – 11 PM daily
Tickets:ááá Timed tickets are required for admission. Advanced tickets may be purchased toll free at (1) 866-GUGG TIX

CHEVAL – Cirque du Soleil Co-Founder Brings Dazzling Equestrian Production to Las Vegas:

From the Director of Creation of Cirque du Soleil’s “O” and MystÞre comes CHEVALÖ, a magical entertainment experience where 30 extraordinary horses lead an international cast of acrobats, actors, dancers and musicians to create a celebration of equestrian and human potential. CHEVAL (French for horse) will be performed from Nov. 21 to Jan. 6, 2002, under the hand-painted big top on Harmon between Bellagio and Monte Carlo.

CHEVAL features 17 different breeds of horses and a cast of 27 in an enchanting and uplifting performance. Horses and humans perform together inside the intimate 46-foot center ring as the captivating music of live musicians and singers provide the original score.

“This show presents the combination of the strength and grace of the horse with the acrobatic artistry of humans,” said Ste-Croix. “Imagine a space where horses and humans respect each other, interact and create magical moments. Its an homage to the relationship between humans and horses.”

Tickets are $56 and $49 (adults), $35 and $30 (children 12 and under) and $51 and $44 for seniors (55 years and older) and students (with valid identification). Tickets may be purchased at any Bellagio, Golden Nugget, NY-NY, Mirage or Treasure Island ticketing outlet or by calling (702) 693-7722 or (888) 488-7111.

CALVIN BROOKS – at Harrah’s Range Lounge:

If Harrah’s Range Steakhouse isn’t one of your favorite places, it should be. You don’t have to be in the mood for a meal — just go up and enjoy the restaurant’s lounge which overlooks The Strip. The view and nice atmosphere are complimented by the smooth jazz stylings of guitarist Calvin Brooks and keyboardist Michael Helm. More about Calvin on his site at http://www.calvinbrooks.com and we have two of his CD’s to give away later in the newsletter.

CONDO SPECIALS – Driving in or renting a car? Enjoy the luxury of a condo at prices that rival a hotel room:

Westgate Flamingo Bay features over 200 villas in a lush tropical oasis style complex. You’ll be only minutes from the world famous Las Vegas Strip. While on site, you’ll enjoy soaking in the hot tub or taking a swim in the outdoor pool. For your convenience laundry facilities are available on site.

Special Internet pricing and accommodations info for Westgate Flamingo Bay at http://www.accessvegas.com/condo-specials.htm

HOOTERS LAS VEGAS – Don’t bother:

Really, don’t waste your time. After visiting locations in Florida (many of which overlook the ocean, gulf, or bay), this was a double disappointment. Located on West Sahara, it is just another overpriced themed suburban eatery but without the view and “beach” atmosphere of the originals. Yes, the waitresses are hotties, but this is Vegas: head on over to The Rio, Mandalay Bay, Venetian, or Hard Rock (to name a few) and beautiful women in even more revealing outfits will serve you a free drink while you play.

Note to casino execs (especially Mandalay Bay): Many of you have beautiful pool areas, and a Hooters franchise (or knockoff) indoor / outdoor beach-themed restaurant of that type would overlook your pool areas beautifully! I continue to wonder why more Las Vegas resorts don’t take advantage of our weather with beach-style pool view dining open to the public.

PREFER NOT TO FLY – and Vegas is too far to drive but you still want to visit a REAL gaming destination? We offer the same great discounts, guaranteed lower rates, and the $100 Hotel Coupon (see below) for rooms in Atlantic City, Gulfport / Biloxi, and Reno as we do in Las Vegas!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas and travel from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Las Vegas weather has continued to be stunning. October saw highs in the mid-80 and daytime temps have been pushing 80 since November started. With the sun setting just after 5 PM, the night cools down and the action heats up in a hurry.

If you read all the articles about how tourism is hurting, you may still be shocked at the notion that hotel occupancy is back to normal here. But, for every person concerned to fly in, someone else is grabbing that room. Fear is a very personal thing, so we certainly aren’t going to judge those not flying, and there are other great gaming destination to check out.

However, I continue to get feedback from people asking if it is safe to come to Las Vegas. Having just having returned for a trip and getting ready to depart for another one later this week (both by air), I thought I’d share my notes on flying in and out of Las Vegas.

Let me say upfront that I enjoy flying in general. So, I’m not approaching this as someone who was looking for added reasons not to fly, but as a regular and comfortable flyer who is weighing the new inconveniences.

My Oct. 24 afternoon departure on Alaska Air went unbelievable smooth. Check in lines were a little long, but I bypassed them with electronic check-in. If your airline offers it, USE IT. Even if you don’t fly often, the screen makes it easy for even a first time user.

At security, measures are tighter. They examine laptops, sometimes run bags through multiple times, search more bags, ask people to remove jackets and other items for a run through the x-ray machine, and ask you to empty your pockets upfront (I assume because the metal detectors are set to their most sensitive setting).

The midday security wait on Oct. 24 (a Wednesday) was almost nonexistent and I had plenty of time to kill before my flight. However, don’t be to complacent regarding getting to the airport. The return trip from Portland (Oregon) to Las Vegas had long security lines at both airports because of the peak travel day.

Fights both ways were full, routine, and nobody seemed tense or any different. Just another day in the air. I depart for a vacation in Florida later this week, and safety is the last thing on my mind. The only two added inconveniences to air travel now are the earlier airport arrival and the security lines during peak times. A small price to pay for the connivance of air travel.

Do I feel more or less safe? More safe, but not for the reasons you may think. The new security measures are mostly for show. Anybody who has military or law enforcement knowledge will tell you that plastic weapons are easily concealed. What makes us safer are the new cockpit doors and the new attitude both commercial pilots and passengers have towards trouble.

Pilots were always told to obey hijackers, which usually just wanted to divert the plane. Now pilot can safely put a plane into dives and climbs that will violently throw everyone not belted in around the plane. (You are routinely asked to stay belted in on flights because “clear air turbulence” routinely does just that on rare occasion).

Passengers, with nothing to lose and knowing that a perpetrator can’t get into the cockpit, are much more likely to gang up on troublemakers pound them senseless. In August 2000 a (possibly) drug-induced passenger got violently out-of-hand on a Southwest flight and injuries he suffered from passengers restraining him caused his death. Both of the above should help detour troublemakers.

Bottom line: If you are concerned, stay away from airplanes, tall buildings, bridges, don’t open your mail … do what you need to do. We all handle things in the way we feel is best. For those curious about how safe things feel, or if anyone is traveling, tens of thousands are visiting Las Vegas every single day without incident and I’m not giving my journeys a second thought.

Next month, we’ll get back to news and views about Las Vegas!
