Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! No newsletter last week — I was a little under the weather but happy to report doing fine. Ton of reader feedback will wait until next week. However, that didn’t stop us from adding great new features and this week we are proud to announce our new photo gallery. Plus, I guested on AM Springfield radio this morning so things are going nuts. Weather is still great, room rates are way down. Great to be in Las Vegas!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Over 1,000 Las Vegas Photos Gallery – We are excited to announce our new Access Vegas Photo Gallery with over 1,000 Las Vegas photos! This is state-of-the-art with photos divided by category, and quick-loading thumbnail photo previews to save you time and let you see exactly what you want.

In addition, we have a hot new “Favorites” feature: If you like a photo, simply click the “Favorites” box below it. This saves it, and when you want to view all your favorites, click the top main “Favorites” button. From there, you can view them slideshow style, email them to a friend, or even download them as a zip file all at once!

We aren’t going to be greedy, either. If you have a Las Vegas page or site, feel free to post up to 25 of them on your pages. The only rules are 1. You don’t alter, crop or remove our name from them,á and 2. Put a link somewhere that says “Photos Courtesy Access Vegas” and links to http://www.accessvegas.com

Megabucks Jackpot Over $19,000,000, Play Smart – Nevada progressive slot Megabucks is well over $19 million dollars. Important warning: Play three coins in or you are screwing yourself. I can’t believe how many times I see people playing only one or two credits on a Megabucks machine. The big jackpot is only available with full coins (three dollars) in play. The machine makes this clear, but many play without looking.

New Web Poll – Vote for our November question “What is the best Las Vegas Downtown hotel?” in the poll on our main page AccessVegas.Com

R.I.P. National Airlines – Las Vegas’ hometown airline had to pack it in last week, a victim of high fuel prices soon after they launched and the post 9/11/01 tourism downturn. If you are still holding a National ticket, you can find details regarding refund possibilities or use on another air carrier at the National website. To help fill the gap, Jet Blue has accelerated plans for the New York – Las Vegas market.

Flying Getting Easier – If you have stayed out of the air since 9/11/01 or even have not flown since all the new security rules have been decided on, this article has some great advice on getting yourself through security quickly and hassle free: US unveils plan to reduce airport security delays

Zagat Top 10 – Congratulations to two Las Vegas hotels for making the Zagat survey’s 2003 Top 10 U.S. resorts: Four Seasons Las Vegas came in at #4 and Bellagio Las Vegas came in at #8.

Cash Blast at Imperial Palace – The Imperial Money Machine will be “blasting” money at 3:30 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in November and December. Five lucky customers will be drawn at random and have two minutes to get to the Kabuki Lounge and one minute to “grab” their share of over $3,000 in cash! To qualify all you have to do is “stay” or “play” at the Imperial Palace. Click For Details

Wolfgang Puck Book Signing and Dinner – Wolfgang Puck will be available to autograph his new book Live, Love, Eat: The Best of Wolfgang Puck in the Wolfgang Puck CafÚ at the MGM Grand on December 5, 2002. You can get an autograph or participate in a special dinner as well. Click For Details, Click For Book Info

Cocktail Waitress Photo Contest – A little advance notice so you can get involved in this. In January, we’ll celebrate the official launch of our photo gallery (yes, we still have much to add to it) with a Las Vegas cocktail waitress photo contest. There will be cash and other Las Vegas prizes to the winning photographers. The contest will run over a number of months, but many visit only once a year so we wanted to let you get started!

Some advice: Photos can be posed or candid, and obviously many of the outfits are sexy, but let’s show a little respect. Good rule of thumb: their head should be in the shot. No butt-only close-ups, guys. Also, different casinos have different rules on photos but generally you can’t shoot into “the pit” (live gaming area). Slot area usually OK unless you are going nuts taking tons of flash photos.

Many waitresses are very friendly and not at all camera shy. If you ask and it isn’t a super busy time, you might be surprised at how many will pose for a shot or two! And it is perfectly acceptable to honestly tell them “I just wanted to show my friends back in (your town here) how truly pretty Las Vegas waitresses are.” Complete contest details in late January. Start shooting!

AM Springfield – We had a great time this morning (even though it was 5 AM Las Vegas time) with Sam Madonia and the guys of AM Springfield on Sports Radio 1450 AM in Springfield, the capital of Illinois. The show was broadcast live from the sportsbook at the Imperial Palace.

They brought out two planeloads of people to Las Vegas and were having more fun than should be allowed! They actually had a live band playing in the sportsbook, and plenty of listeners enjoying the festivities. Plus, Sam is funny as they come. I was watching/listening to the show before my slot and he had my rolling with laughter.

We always love to talk Las Vegas, but also appreciated the opportunity to warm up for a planned media blitz early spring that will promote our continuingá AccessVegas.Com expansion. Also, thanks to Amy from Vegas Du Soleil for helping arrange the guest spot.

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. See the beautiful photos and purchase info atá 2003 Las Vegas Calendar.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows,á tours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Featured Review: Dice Angel

Dice Angel by Brian Rouff – We seldom review books because most Las Vegas books are a little too “insider” (only of interest to someone who knows the life story on the town’s key players) or “mathematical” (how to win at blackjack). I can’t even chow through more than a couple chapters at a time with many of them.So when I found a Vegas book that I literally could not put down, I had to tell you about it. Dice Angel is the (fictional) story of Las Vegas bar owner Jimmy Delaney and he’s got problems. With his ex-wife, the IRS, his bar getting robbed, and an embezzling accountant who happens to be part of his family. He’s not a model citizen but a hell of a likable guy.

The cool thing about his book is that both locals and visitors can relate to it. You don’t feel like an outsider reading it because this could be a guy in Cleveland or Atlanta. But what makes it extra fun is that the backdrop is Las Vegas. Who is Armaris, what happened to the accountant, and what is it like to gamble high stakes at craps? You’ve gotta read to find out!

I read it cover to cover in one sitting. The story was captivating, and a true picture of the quirks of life in Las Vegas, but written in a way that will entertain everybody. It is unfortunate that the characters are fiction. It made me want to drive over to Sahara and Jones (location of the fictional bar), look for Jimmy D’s, play a roll of video poker, and order a burger.

Read this on the plane trip here and you’ll not only be landing before you know it, but be revved up to take fresh look at everything you are going to do and see. Dice Angel is available at Amazon.Com (click) for a reasonable $14.95.

Featured Tour: Sky Dive in Las Vegas

Sky Dive in Las Vegas – Our airplane will take you all the way up to 8,000′ feet above sea level for your exit. The first tandem includes pre-jump explanation, demonstrations, video training, practice, rehearsal, & all of the how’s & why’s of what will happen and what to expect (available in Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese). The training lasts about 30-40 minutes, and you will be here a total of about 2 hours complete for your first jump.

Additional Tours Including Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, City, Scenic, National Parks, and Adventure

Featured Golf Course: Angel Park

Angel Park – Voted Best of Las Vegas, Angel Park Golf Club is 20 minutes northwest of the Las Vegas Strip. Angel Park Golf is commonly referred to as “the world’s most complete golf experience.” Here you can enjoy the challenge and beauty of two Arnold Palmer-designed 18-hole championship golf courses, experience the thrill of the game’s most famous par-threes on the Cloud Nine Short Course, and test your mettle against the intriguing putting course.

THIS ISSUE: Summer Beat The Heat Issue

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It’s been a little warm, but I’m going to say it: It is a dry heat. The past couple of weeks many U.S. cities have been sweltering under 95 degree temperatures with devistating humidity. I’ll take our 105 and bone dry anytime. Here’s a tip for you: Some of the lowest rates of the year here are in the summer. If you have to be hot, might as well be here on vacation by the pool!

For those who enjoy more moderate temperatures, now is the time to extend your summer this fall. Our average October high is 84 and this brings flocks of visitors from areas the weather has already chilled. That and betting on college football games! The key to locking in great fall rates here is to book NOW. The longer you wait, the higher the rates are going to climb. Check our rates at Rates

FLAMINGO FIESTA – Enjoy great food, beer and other beverages from Mexico in The Flamingo’s restaurants and bars and recieve a free scratch card to win instant prizes including beverages, merchandise or vacations to Mexico. Every card is a winner and the Flamingo Room, Lindy’s (coffee shop) and the buffet have special Mexican menus.

HAWAIIAN TROPIC – Western Regional Pageant semi-finals are being held every Saturday night poolside at Bally’s through Aug. 31. Tickets are $25 and includes two drinks ($15 with no drinks).

WIN SINATRA JR. TICKETS – If you have yet to enter, you have only a few hours left to enter to win Frank Sinatra Jr. tickets for his upcoming engagement at the MGM. He is singing his father’s songs with full 36-piece orchestra. Enter or learn more about this show at Sinatra Jr.

TAXI DRIVERS – finally got busted. I’ve been ranting here forever about how they are screwing you guys over with long rides (without your consent to the alternate routing). The Taxi Authority did undercover work and found that 60-80% of the rides from the airport to The Strip went south through the airport tunnel instead of north toward The Strip. This has been costing riders 35-60% more. A full story from the local paper is available at Taxi Driversl We continue to suggest renting a car, which costs about the price of a couple cab rides a day. Especially at this rate!

SPLASH SUMMER SPECIAL – See Splash at the Riviera through August 31, 2002 and eat at the buffet for free! Splash is the topless show with the most variety of entertainment: with gorgeous showgirls in glamorous costumes, world-class ice skaters, motorcycle daredevils, and the hottest specialty acts on the strip. Book now at Splash

HILTON BUFFET – changed it’s look a while back, but kept the quality. We stopped in for Sunday Brunch and really enjoyed it. $12.99 for champaign bruch featuring all of your breakfast favorites, ommelettes cooked to order, a full salad bar including cheeses, plenty of fresh fruit, peeled shrimp, lox, a nice variety of Asian delights and a full desert area. Well worth the money and then some, and the new decor is more modern and very comfortably upscale.

9/11 – I’ll be flying on 9/11 this year. I had a trip that was bringng me back September 10 and jumped at the chance to extend it a day. Crazy? No. Crazy is those who haven’t flown because of months old airport horror stories. If you are just plain scared to fly, I respect that people have various fears. If not, get on a plane. I’m spending far less time clearning security than before Sept. 11 of last year as are most travelers I talk to.

RESTAURANTS – Our Food Guide Chef John Guinivere continues to make the rounds and report on great Las Vegas dining opportunities. Recently reviews are Andre’s French Restaurant (one of the top restaurants in town, period) and Mr. Lucky’s at the Hard Rock. Those and more at Restaurants

ROCKIN’ UNDER THE STARS – Caesars Palace presents a weekend of music, dancing and celebration. This two-night All-Star Concert Series event will feature Dennis Quaid & The Sharks Saturday, Aug. 31, and Jim Belushi & The Sacred Hearts Sunday, Sept. 1, with opening act Vesica Pisces both nights. Reserved-seat tickets are priced at $25 (plus handling) and can be purchased by calling (702) 731-7333

POOL PARTY – The Plaza (downtown) has a free pool party on the sports deck of the Hotel on Thursday nights. The Party is for Adults only 21 or older and features wet T-shirt contests, water balloon tosses, limbo and hula hoop contests. There is a disc jockey, dancing as well as specially priced food and drink.

CREOLE HEAT – New show features a slice of life in New Orleans, Broadway-style served cajun hot featuring laughter, song, drama and delight! Get swept away in this alternative and refreshing production! 7:30 pm nightly except Wednesday in the Big Easy Showroom at the Bourbon Street Hotel & Casino. $29.95 plus tax & gratuity includes 2 free drinks. Dinner packages available. Creole Heat for tickets and info.

TEQULA JOE’S – Imperial Palace now has a nightclub. Tequila JoeÆs features a fabulous Daiquiri Bar, great food and a nightly dance scene that is far from the ordinary. The Center Strip location features state-of-the-art sound system, spinning the best of Top 40, house and hip hop, live DJÆs Friday and Saturday nights. It sounds like they are trying to give Harrah’s Carnival Court a run for their money and we’ll be down to check it out soon.

CHICK SINGER NIGHT – Female musicians looking for a venue to showcase their talent now have the perfect place at the Palms Casino Resort with Chick Singer Night (CSN). The Las Vegas debut of CSN takes place Monday, Aug. 5 at 8 p.m. in the Palapa Lounge. CSN will be held the first Monday of each month for the next three months at the Palms. CSN is open to the public and is free of charge. Singers of all levels of experience, from the aspiring beginner to the seasoned professional, are invited to sing any style of music.

MAGIC ALL-STARS – has opened at the Frontier. It appears they are taking a “comedy club” approach to magic. Host Paull Casas will feature a variety rotating magic acts, both known and unknown. The show plays every Friday at 2 PM. The price is right: $14.95 which includes two drinks. Suitible for all ages, children under five are admitted free.

LINK AND WIN – How do free show tickets sound? Maybe a stunning night helicopter flight over The Strip! How would you like to be automatically entered every quarter (4 times a year) into our drawing for these great prizes? If you have a website or homepage you can enter to win these are more just by linking to us! Full details at Link and Win

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

SHOW REVIEW:

Instead of a show review this issue, I thought I’d give you some ideas for great things to see this summer and early fall in Las Vegas. Both things to stay indoors and “beat the heat” as well as interesting outdoor activites and when to do them.

Stratosphere Tower — The tower has both indoor and outdoor viewing areas so this is a great thing to see no matter what time of day. However, we suggest getting there about an hour before sunset and enjoy watching the entire Strip light up from the lounge. You can enjoy a cool drink in climate controlled area with a million dollar view. Then after the sun dips, head out to the outdoor observation deck and experience the open-air view. To determine sunset for the days you will be here, click to http://www.weather.com/weather/climatology/daily/89121?climoMonth=8

Bellagio Fountains and Fontana Lounge – The Fountains of Bellagio go off every 30 minutes from noon until dusk and then every 15 minutes until midnight. The water creates a cooling effect for those watching it. You can view it from the street or from the Fontana Lounge in evening. The Fontana is one of the nicest lounges in the city, with an outdoor area overlooking the lake and fountains.

Helicopter Flights – You probably have extra cash in your pocket because your room rate is so reasonable during the summer. Use that money to jump on one of Maverick Helicopter’s air conditioned jet helicopters for a beautiful flight over and into the Grand Canyon. If you choose a flight with a stop at the bottom of the Canyon, you will find it not only stunning on the eyes, but comfortably cool as well. Click to http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

Go Shopping – Las Vegas has some of the most incredible shopping malls in the world with various free shows and events on a regular basis. Caesars Forum Shops have various shows occuring every hour. Desert Passage at Aladdin has Arabian music, belly dancing, and more. The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian is a taste of Venice with strolling performers and a canal down the middle of the entire mall. These malls have all been built with a nice “outdoor” feel to them and if shopping is not your thing, sit at one of the cafes or restaurants and just enjoy people watching.

Treasure Island Pirate Show – plays at 5:30 PM., 7:00 PM., 8:30 PM., 10:00 PM. and 11:30 PM. The show is free right out in front of Treasure Island. You’ll want to get a good viewing spot at least 30 minutes before the show starts, so plan to see one of the last two shows so you aren’t standing in the blazing sun. Because of the lights and pyrotechnics, the show is much more spectacular after dark.

MGM Lion Habitat — is free and indoors. Open starting at 11 AM, this is a great “beat the heat” activity and a chance to view live lions up close.

We have additional information on fun Las Vegas activities (many indoors) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/las-vegas-attractions.htm

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Running a little late this time. I was out of town for a week at my sister’s wedding, and I thought it would be a good idea to get caught up on the stack of newspapers and press releases so I could pass everything along.

The long 4’th of July weekend is just about here, and there is still time to reserve your room and head to Las Vegas. Check at http://www.accessvegas.com and grab rooms while they are still available. This year both the Stratosphere Tower and The Venetian are featuring fireworks (approx. 9 PM for both).

Our deepest sympathy to the fans, friends, and family of Who bassist John Entwistle who passed away Friday June 28 here in Las Vegas, just one day before the start of their highly anticipated concert tour.

$1.83 BILLION – is the new price tag for Steve Wynn’s Le Reve (former Desert Inn site). Other reports place the cost closer to $2.5 billion. The billion dollar construction credit line is believed to be the biggest construction loan ever issued in the United States. How upscale is this property going to be? They are looking at having Ferrari and Maserati dealerships right on site. Completion is expected in 2005. We’ll tell you more as they actually get moving along. This is looking to be huge.

STRIKE LOOMING – Looks like we are going to have a hotel strike at a few selected properties that have not come to terms with the union. Word is that replacement workers are ready to go to minimize disruption. The strike is set for a few hours following our publication here, but we’ll keep a hotel list and details updated at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotel-strike.htm

CIRQUE DU TOO MANY? – Two more Cirque du Soleil shows are coming to the Las Vegas Strip. New York, New York will open one in 2003 and MGM in 2004. Details are scarce except that the New York, New York show will be sensual and erotic. Cirque du Soleil has been kicking around the idea of an adult (topless) show for some time. This just might be it. Add to that Celine Dion’s show (which is supposed to be Cirque style) and another Cirque style show at Le Reve and we’ll see if overkill is possible, even in Las Vegas.

$20 DISCOUNT – We have a special arrangement with Maverick Helicopters to offer $20 off on their spectacular Grand Canyon helicopter flights online. Maverick flies farther and deeper into the Canyon with some of the newest equipment and the best safety record. They are the company the concierges at many of the top Las Vegas resorts call when their guests request a Grand Canyon tour. By booking online through us, we can offer you $20 off these stunning tours. Tour info, photos, and booking details available at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/las-vegas-grand-canyon-tours.htm

NICK’S – Our restaurant guide Chef John Guinivere just reviewed Nick’s On The Strip, a pleasant alternative to a hotel coffee shop for diverse 24 hour dining and a great night view. You can find it and other reviews at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-restaurants.htm

FREE BINGO, CHEAP BOWLING – The Westward Ho is having free bingo at 4 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays. Everyone is welcome for the eight games played at each session. $50 prize each game. The Gold Coast (next to Rio and Palms) has $1 bowling and $1 drinks Midnight to 4 AM, Mondays through Fridays.

TAXI SCAM – The cab drivers are at it again. If you are on your way down The Strip, they’ll tell you that the Bellagio Fountain show is about to start and will pull into the right lane of traffic sitting there with about 20 other cabs until the show starts while the meter is running (racking up both a higher fare and hoping you tip them extra for the “favor”).

Granted, the fountain show runs every 15 minutes after dark so it is never more than a 10 minute wait, but the view from a cab is lousy. You are behind trees and other people lining the sidewalk. Since the fountain shows do play every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight, and since they are well worth seeing, plan on seeing them up close from the sidewalk sometime during your visit.

SPIRIT AIRLINES – is starting to serve Las Vegas. This on the heels of Jet Blue announcing that they are entering our market October 10. This opens up new service from New York (Jet Blue) and Detroit (Spirit) as well as flights from multiple cities in Florida (heavily served by both airlines).

FABERGE: TREASURES FROM THE KREMLIN – opens at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art in September running through January 26, 2003. The exhibit will feature more than 100 of the world’s finest Faberge masterworks. Tickets are $15 ($12 for students and NV residents).

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through http://www.accessvegas.com or the links in this newsletter. SHOW REVIEW:

Bravo Starring Charo – The “Cuchi-Cuchi” girl has returned to Las Vegas. Charo made her Las Vegas debut at the Sahara in the mid-70’s, playing here often as well as making 45 appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show, guest star spots on shows like The Love Boat, and recording albums. After taking the better part of two decades off to raise her son in Hawaii, she is making a strong comeback in Las Vegas.

Bravo is an international variety show with contemporary Latin music, flamenco, salsa and samba dancing. While centered on Charo’s multitude of talents (she can do much more than jiggle), she doesn’t try to carry the show. Bravo contains a full cast of musicians, dancers, and specialty acts to create an enjoyable, well rounded show.

After the opening song and dance set, ventriloquist Sammy King and his wisecracking Mexican parrot Francisco do a very funny comedy bit. Sammy King has been performing since 1958 all over the world as well as a mainstay performer of Las Vegas shows. His act is seasoned by his years of performing, but hasn’t lost lost the edge. He is hilarious.

After the dance number “Freedom,” the aerial adage team of Cees and Cathy take center stage. For those not familiar with this art form, it combines dance, strength, and gymnastics performed while suspended high in the air. The male generally wraps his arms around leather straps and floats through the air while supporting, twirling, and twisting with the female in an artful way.

Later in the show, Charo took the stage to perform four classical guitar pieces. While known best for her “cuchi-cuchi,” few know that she trained and performed with classical guitar master Segovia in her birth country of Spain and continues to be a master of the instrument. This segment was long enough to be enjoyable without being an exercise in ego.

Bravo is more likely to appeal to those who know/remember who Charo is or who enjoy the very popular Latin music and dance (which the show has plenty of). The Sahara showroom is moderately intimate and very comfortable, providing the perfect venue for most aspects of this production.

Charo was recently inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame and video highlights of the induction are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/news Video highlights of Bravo Staring Charo are available at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/shows

Bravo Starring Charo plays at the Sahara Hotel and Casino. For current times and ticket prices, please click http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=299&cityid=1 and enter the dates of your visit to display prices and availability.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! After I sent out the last issue (April 6, 2002 – available in archives) I headed downtown to Fremont St. to have the Binion’s late night steak. (Whaddya think … I fly in to do this stuff? I’m live in Vegas 24/7)! Saw a print ad shoot for the new 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo right there next to Binion’s and the Golden Nugget, and yes they had the car out there. Bright red, with a blonde model sitting in it. You never know what you will see in Las Vegas!

Speaking of, Binion’s has reopened their original coffee shop downstairs from the casino after using the upstairs buffet area as a substitute for the past couple of years. They still have the full steak dinner for $4.99 from 11 PM – 7 AM and well worth stopping in for.

We are making a publication change. Nothing startling. This present twice-monthly, mid-length format has been unbelievably well received. However, breaking hotel specials and updates happen more than twice a month. So on the “off” week from the full newsletter, we will send our new Access Vegas Update:

A quick, simple one page bulletin of late breaking specials and updates to help you with your Las Vegas vacation planning that you can read in a matter of minutes.

E! MODEL SEARCH – Were we at the Maryweather / Castillo fight Saturday night? Maybe Tiger Jam? Heck no … E! invited us to Rain Nightclub at The Palms for the one of the casting calls of E! Wild On. They are looking for a replacement for Wild On host Brooke Burke. Hundreds of women from all over the West coast were interviewed in this hot new nightclub. Full details and info on coming casting locations at http://www.eonline.com/On/Wild/HostSearch We’ll try to keep you posted for when this casting special airs. In the meantime, E! airs all of the “Vegas Showgirls: Nearly Famous” episodes back-to-back May 4. Check local listings for time.

MAN OF 1002 VOICES – I’m proud to be one of the first touting comedic impressionist Larry G. Jones right here in this newsletter, and his accolades keep growing. The Las Vegas Sun (afternoon daily) just said “If you can’t afford Danny Gans go see Larry G. Jones.” That must be put in perspective as Gans’ tickets start at around $80. Jones’ talent is right up there and it’s nice of Fitzgeralds to offer this show at a one drink minimum. More info is on Jones’ site at http://www.lasvegasacts.com

For all the people who say there are no good deals left in Vegas … go enjoy Jones (Tue. – Sat. at 5 PM upstairs at Fitzgeralds), $1.25 beers at Las Vegas Club, 99 cent shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate, see the free Fremont St. Experience light show (top of every hour after dark), then finish off the night with Binion’s $4.99 complete steak dinner. Where else can you get a night of entertainment and food for less than a $20.00 bill all within 4 blocks?

GRAND CANYON – Contrary to popular belief, the Grand Canyon isn’t at 20 minute drive from The Strip. If you drive, you have just begun when you hit Hoover Dam (45 minutes from The Strip). Hence, we don’t suggest bus tours unless you want to spend the majority of your day on a bus, only to see a small corner of the Canyon. And save Hoover Dam for a visit when you can spend an hour or two enjoying it.

We do suggest helicopter tours and are proud to continue our affiliation with Maverick. We could have gone with anybody, but Maverick is simply the best. Unlike many companies quoting bargain prices (then tacking on substantial “taxes and fees”), Maverick quotes you the entire price right up front. They have the best safety record, most comfortable ASTAR Jet Helicopters, and they fly further and deeper into the Canyon.

Your vacation time is very valuable and seeing the Grand Canyon is worth doing right. Many of the concierges at top area hotels call Maverick first. Check out the Maverick difference at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/maverick Like a good restaurant, Maverick flights fill up fast and early so consider booking online in advance of your visit. If you call, make sure to mention promo code “Access Vegas” to get our special rates.

FREE POOL PARTY – Join 105.7 FM Wednesday nights for Smooth Jazz at the Whisky Sky Bar by the pool in the Green Valley Ranch. The Oasis’ Gwen Abbott will be your host and have lots of Oasis prizes as well. Wednesday, May 1 features Turning Point including Native American, and Middle Eastern dancers. Wednesday, May 8th, Gregg Karukas will perform. His single, ôNight Shift,ö just spent two weeks at number one on the national Smooth Jazz charts. Parties are scheduled to continue on Wednesday evenings and the view from Whisky Sky Bar must be seen!

CABBIES – Just a reminder: Las Vegas cab drivers get kickbacks from various shows, clubs, strip joints and more. If you ask to go somewhere, they often firmly try to persuade you to go somewhere else by telling you that your selection isn’t as good. Also keep this in mind when asking them for general advice on what to go, see, or do. We have a host of show reviews online at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com so check with us first and make up your own mind!

CLINT HOLMES – launches his third year at Harrah’s. They have christened the showroom as the “Clint Holmes Theater” and it is a well deserved honor. He continues to rack up accolades with his mix of contemporary, pop, jazz, and calypso selections that make up a complete, fantastic performance. If you are sitting there going “who” or just wondering about his show, please read our archived review at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/clint-holmes-las-vegas-shows.htm

TRAVEL TIP – Sun Country airlines has resumed service post 9/11 and are hubbing out of Laughlin, Nevada (90 miles south of Las Vegas) on the West Coast. If you are traveling between cities they serve you’d be wise to check out their fares. Using Laughlin as a hub is a great cost-saver because of the isolation of the area (little air traffic or military airspace to dodge which means less time in the traffic pattern).

Sun Country serves Minneapolis, Laughlin, Orlando, Ft. Myers, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas (from Minneapolis only), Denver, Seattle, Portland, and Dallas. Their number is 1-800-359-6786.

CELINE DION – Yes, she is coming for an extended run at Ceasars. Yes, she is already living in town. Yes, the show is said to be moving along well. No, we don’t have a launch date for it. Yes, we will let you know the minute we know and make tickets available.

TYSON / LEWIS FIGHT – isn’t going to be in Las Vegas. Memphis, TN gave it the green light. If you’ve never experienced a big fight live you can check out fight package pricing and availability at http://www.thereservationcompany.com/trceppricing.cfm?amid=143&eventid=3

MESSAGE BOARDS – A big thanks to those who are starting to participate and help fill up our new message boards. This is the place to post any questions you have, then post your comments when you return from Las Vegas! We already have some great people giving comments and I’m in there ever few days to help answer questions as well. Come visit and post at http://boards.accessvegas.com

SHOW REVIEWS:

MIDNIGHT FANTASY – Las Vegas seems to have a topless show on every corner now. The old standbys like Folies Bergere and Jubilee have it as part of a bigger production. Crazy Girls makes it the centerpiece of a bawdy production. La Femme features the “artistic value.”

Midnight Fantasy has taken a different angle. There is just about as much topless time as can be squeezed into a production show, and even the comedian jokes about it being a “t*ttie show.” However, the Midnight Fantasy title doesn’t describe male fantasies, but female fantasies.

Each vignette starts with narration setting up a scene of a breathless female fantasy that is played out through choreography, staging and costumes. Although the limited stage keeps the props to a minimum, this actually works as fantasy is more about the mind and acted out by the dancers.

They have avoided the traditional “showgirl” look, instead paying great attention to the unique and provocative wardrobe worn by the dancers and cast. Red leather chaps and cowboy hats, rhinestone bustiers, filmy negligees and business suits are a few of the elements that add to the storyline. As the fantasy story heats up in each vignette, the costumes become more revealing.

I’ve got to hand it to the cast which features vocalist Charidy Sullivan LaFontaine, dancer / impressionist Sean Cooper, and comedian John Padon plus nine beautiful dancers. When there is a weak spot, whether with the main performance or the specialty acts, it can bog down an entire show. LaFontaine has a nice voice and connects with the audience on a solid level. The crowd fell in love with Cooper, who’s comedic impression of Tina Turner was memorable, as was his entire routine.

John Pardon had the standard “Vegas” jokes mixed in with quick-paced comments on life. While no Andrew “Dice” Clay he does use some adult language. But like he said … “Hey … what do you expect … you are at a t*ttie show.” The cast of dancers and choreography was strong throughout the performance, something not always expected from a mid-priced show. Because the show delves into female fantasies from a woman’s prespective, Midnight Fantasy is a fine couples show (provided the lady is comfortable with this subject matter to begin with).

Midnight Fantasy is a production show running nightly (dark Monday) at the Luxor hotel. Pricing and advance reservations available at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=143&cscheme=2&showid=197&cityid=1

THIS ISSUE: The State of Las Vegas Tourism

EDITOR’S NOTES: Fall is the season for change, and we are changing this newsletter from a comprehensive weekly to a monthly digest version starting next issue. This isn’t due to the temporary slump in tourism or any failure. Quite the contrary: Las Vegas visitor numbers are already back to normal. We personally took a hit last month but it wasn’t bad. (We’ll discuss the layoffs, rumors, cheap room prices and such in this week’s feature article).

The simple fact is that I’m a “victim” of my own success! When I started this in May of 1999, I just had the http://www.accessvegas.com site and the weekly newsletter was my main outlet for news and reviews. Now that I have expanded to publishing a number of sites, pretty much all the information published here is available on one of them. I can’t continue my responsibilities of building, updating, and expanding them and also find the 15-20 hours a week this has been taking unless I continue working 7 day weeks (which has taken a toll).

Let me outline where your favorite parts of this newsletter are available online:

Las Vegas News: Every single day, http://www.accessvegas.com is updated with the latest Las Vegas news. Make it your start page or at least bookmark it (add it to favorites).

Editors Notes: I’m renaming these “Newkirk’s Notes” and they will continue to be a part of the newsletter. In fact, I’ll be able to spend a little more time than before commenting on the latest Las Vegas news, rumor, taking more stabs at our lousy cab drivers, and giving you my outspoken commentary that you won’t read in those glossy tourism magazines.

Concerts, Shows, Events: We have already moved most of these listings online as linked from the newsletter. To fill in any gaps, we will soon start a “Press Pass” page where we’ll be posting many of the weekly press releases get. This page will be free. The newsletter space was limited, forcing me to pick and choose what to include. We want to make more info available to those interested.

Reviews: We have a comprehensive selection of reviews at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com now, and we’ll continue to add to them on a monthly basis. We’ll note the additions each month’s newsletter, but if you can’t wait you can scroll down toward the bottom of that page, enter your email address, and be sent a note every time we add a new review!

Feedback: I never had enough room to print all of the great feedback, which was a shame because your comments when you return from Las Vegas are a huge help to those getting ready to visit. That prompted me to build the Comment Las Vegas site at http://boards.accessvegas.com

It is a great place to share your thoughts and (providing you stay on topic and don’t post anything in bad taste) you are guaranteed that tens of thousands will enjoy your comments over time. I’ll still be here via email to answer specific questions — just hit reply anytime you have a question that needs a personal reply. Unless out of town, I should be able to get back to you promptly.

So what will be in the monthly newsletter? We’ll let you know about the big coming events, highlight the new content we put online, have specials, giveaways, and a lot of fun. In fact, the very grind of getting this out weekly in the past took away the time I needed to make the phone calls and cut the deals so I could offer better specials and giveaways. I’ll be on the horn the next few weeks setting stuff up!

Speaking of …

One more very important note: If you have installed About.Com Bar, NetZero, or Kazaa, you very may have unknowingly installed a virus-like spyware program that overwrites web pages with extra links that webmasters like myself did not place and have no control over (and are certainly not endorsed by us). If you have, details about this virus-like program and info on getting rid of it are at http://www.scumware.com

Las Vegas Commercials — Unless you live in Los Angeles or a few other selected markets, you may never get to see the exciting television commercials that many of the casinos produce. These commercials do a fantastic job of highlighting the excitement of Las Vegas and we’ve been able to put a number of them online at http://tv.accessvegas.com/videos/commercials/ Go enjoy!

Desert Inn Implosion — is still set for 2 a.m. Oct. 23. In light of the WTC, they aren’t making any kind of big deal about it, but if you are in town you might want to head over and watch.

Scheduled to appear are a variety of both national and Las Vegas performers including Lance Burton, Tony Curtis, Robert Goulet, Clint Holmes, Jimmy Hopper, cast of Jubilee, Mac King, Rich Little, McGuire Sisters, Melinda, Wayne Newton, Siegfried and Roy, Jessica Simpson, Rick Springfield, and many more.

Tickets are $25 and available by dialing (702) 632-7580. Wayne Newton is active in the USO and is putting together a cast of national celebrities to take on a USO tours (similar to what Bob Hope did for years). Thus, the benefit for this cause. With the 2 PM start, many of you can attend and still have time to drive home or get to the airport if you have an evening flight. NEWKIRK’S NOTES: The State of Las Vegas Tourism

Las Vegas is just about back to normal. N-O-R-M-A-L. Hotel occupancy rates are normal. The amount of air traffic in and out of town is just a hair off, but normal for all intents and purposes. The only “abnormal” thing are lower than usual room rates. With sunny weather in the 80’s, hotels often get top dollar for rooms during the fall. Those in town the past few weeks can attest to enjoying our beautiful fall weather at summer prices (the “low” season because of the heat).

I can already read your mind. You are thinking “This guy is a PR idiot who is full of crap — I keep reading about how hard Vegas has been hit, about the hotel layoffs, and how nobody is traveling.” Longtime readers know I base my reputation on the facts, but I’ll still be happy to defend my statements.

Things were indeed rough for a short period of time. The first week after the attacks was bad. The only other time the Strip is that empty is the week before Christmas. The second week was still rough, but the slashed rates started to attract people and business climbed quite a bit. By the third week, things were getting pretty close to normal and now are back to normal.

Remember, 1/5 of the population of the United States lives within a long days drive of Las Vegas, and most of those are in Southern California or Arizona, just a few hours away. We saw the same thing happen that we experience during a recession: People from other parts of the country (and the world) who opt to vacation closer to home (or skip a vacation) are replaced by drive-ins who had to skip the trip to Hawaii or Mexican Cruise due to cost, and jumped in the car for Las Vegas instead.

Yes, The hotels are hurting a bit. They are filling their rooms but the cut rates are attracting the bargain travelers who gamble much less, don’t go to shows, and don’t eat at the high end restaurants. If you enjoyed the “old” Las Vegas where you could get a $50 room on the Strip and see low limits even on the weekends, the past month was the time to be here. If you enjoy the fine dining and higher-end shows, you will find much shorter lines and more ticket availability.

So what about the layoffs? Just clearing out the dead wood. The hotels have always supposedly had a great relationship with the main union that most of the employees at the major hotels are affiliated with. I say supposedly because let’s face it … when management has a gun to their head to pay $18 an hour to somebody they could otherwise hire for $15, they can’t be truly happy. On the other hand, they don’t want to risk a huge labor problem. Shutting down much of Las Vegas’ tourism would be more damaging (in the long run) than the Sept. 11 events.

After business plummeted, the hotels went to the union and said “We can either work everyone 32 hours a week, or we can do layoffs.” The union contract dictates that full time workers must get 40 hours a week and the union didn’t budge. Hence, the layoffs. Two weeks later, the union came back to the table and said “We’ll go for the 32 hour weeks to get everybody back to work” and the hotels said “Too late — we offered that and you said no — we already did the layoffs and reorganized.”

Does it sound like I’m siding a bit with management? Perhaps. Why? Because I am very upset about the rising complaints of poor service that I get from you and the visitors to my websites. Too many hotel employees are taking you for granted. I have personally overheard hotel employees chat in local watering holes about customers.

An example: a slot floor attendant (the guy who brings machine fills and pays jackpots) was complaining that a lady didn’t tip him very much when she hit a jackpot. I politely asked him why someone should be required to tip when hitting a jackpot in a situation the odds are against them and they have probably lost more than that jackpot on her visit. He said “I only make $12 an hour (plus benefits) and so I need the tips, and besides … if a customer wants to make sure we are quick with the machine fills and the jackpot payoffs, we remember who the tippers are and aren’t.”

On another occasion, I heard a bartender complaining that someone hit a Royal Flush at his bar ($1000) and only tipped him $20. Granted, $12 an hour isn’t an executive wage, but we are talking a job requiring very little skill. And yet this is how all too many people look at you visitors — punishing you if you don’t cough up a gratuity that meets their expectations.

Let me interject that I believe in tipping in the appropriate situations and I am a generous tipper. In the case of bartenders, it is customary to tip per round whether you are paying for a drink or getting it “comped” (free) because you are playing.

But many slot attendants and bartenders (I kid you not) believe and expect that they should get a 10% tip on any hand pay jackpot and anything less than that, they sniff at. Do they remember that you may be down hundreds or thousands of dollars for the trip and this win doesn’t even bring you even? That $20 was more than he bad before!

It is unfortunate that the layoffs were arbitrary (done on seniority instead of merit in most cases), but in the long run I believe this will be good for you, the Las Vegas visitor. The workers have had a harsh reminder that their jobs are only there because YOU come to town. No visitors = no jobs.

Too many people have moved to town hearing about the good wages for regular jobs with no attachment or commitment to the community or understanding that their great new job is 100% dependent on you visitors. If you are a local who fits that category, I have a message for you: The rest of us are living here because we love Las Vegas, and those of us who are selling the rooms so you have people to service (and thus a job) are tired of you taking our customers for granted.

THIS ISSUE: Letters and Complaints

EDITOR NOTES: I am calling this our “complaint” issue. Although rare, sometimes things don’t go perfectly in Las Vegas. Thus we are devoting this issue to “How To Complain and Be Heard.” We are also publishing a backlog of reader feedback.

You might note a common “rent a car” theme in this issue. Yes, we make $1-2 a day when you rent a car through us. Yes, we feel we have the best service because we let you compare all major companies for the best deal, and let you use your rental club card number (if applicable). However, we want your business long term, and giving you bad advice to make a few dollars isn’t worth it. In the situations I recommend it, I truly feel car rental it is your smartest move.

Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:FLAMINGO POOL PARTY – The Flamingo Hotel is hosting a free pool party with live music from 5-9 PM every evening. Specials include 2-1 drinks, as well as live barbecue cooking. As a bonus, you get to walk through a “best kept secret”: The Flamingo’s gardens which include live penguins and flamingos. Just head toward the back by the buffet and head out the doors that lead outside (between the casino and buffet).

NOT JUST GAMBLING – Studies by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) show that most potential visitors perceive Vegas as an entertainment destination rather than a gambling venue. That’s a very significant development, said Rob Powers of the LVCVA, a Las Vegan for 24 years. We’re more of a complete resort destination, and we’re able to go after every prospective leisure traveler. Story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-2.htm

CAB DRIVERS – If you think the cab drivers in this city don’t care about servicing the tourists, this will add more fuel to your fire. The Taxicab Authority recently changed the shifts serving McCarran airport to put more cabs at the airport later in the evening for tourists. The cab companies have balked in a big way, citing the inconvenience to their employees. (Guess they forgot who they are serving — the casinos don’t balk at having employees on around the clock to service their customers.) Full story at http://www.accessvegas.com/story-3.htm Spend the cab fares on a rental car so you don’t have to be at the mercy of these guys.

NY VS. LV – Las Vegas Weekly writer Max Jacobson took a recent visit to New York, and dined at many of the New York City counterparts to some of the newer Las Vegas restaurants at http://www.lasvegasweekly.com/2001_2/08_9/food_taste.html

SUPERCONTEST – If you think you know football, The Hilton is again running their SuperContest. $1,500 secures your spot and allows you to pick five games against the spread each week during the regular NFL season. A $10,000 aggregate bonus will be awarded to anyone who selects over 67 percent winners and a $10,000 early sign up bonus contest will be offered to those who enter before 5:00 p.m. on August 26. Sign up begins August 3 and ends at 1:00 p.m. on September 7. First place will win up to $150,000 based on 250 entries.

$100 REBATE SPECTACULAR! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you up to $100 back on any stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. (Full details and list of all eligible cities at http://www.accessvegas.com/100-rebate.htm ). Claiming your cash is simple:

2. Book a room online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm
3. Send in for your rebate when you get home.

FEATURE STORY: Hotel Complaints

HOTEL COMPLAINTS – Unfortunately, unpleasant experiences sometimes happen on vacation. To compound matters, the person in charge often doesn’t care and you aren’t in a position to spend vacation time hunting down top management. Every month we get email from people frustrated by poor service and lack of attention to complaints by hotel or restaurant personnel.

Let me suggest the following course of action: Post a note about your unpleasant experience on our new Comment Las Vegas board at http://boards.accessvegas.com This way, you will help warn others. Then, print out your post and include it with a letter to the hotel manager, noting the problems. (Hotel addresses can be found at http://yp.yahoo.com ).

It helps to note the exact time, place, and employee name or description(s) if possible. By including a copy of a post to a well-read message board, they now know you are not only serious about your problem, but telling others as well.

One note of caution: Do make sure the complaint is reasonable. They can sniff out someone who came to town, drank too much, got a bad sunburn, lost all of their money, and is just looking for someone to yell at. Honest, specific complaints with surrounding facts get you a much better chance at not only an apology but possibly compensation ranging from a free dinner to free rooms next time you visit.

As someone who enjoys travel myself (besides selling it online), I always strongly suggest doing research before you travel somewhere. As reported here, The MGM closed the theme park well over a year ago. For those newer to the list, we have all our back issues (through May 2001) archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com

The entire goal of a hotel / casino is to keep you on their property. That is why every hotel has a steakhouse, Italian restaurant, Asian restaurant, shops, shows, and the rest. In fact, the MGM has a child care center ($6 an hour last I checked, child must be 3-12 in age and potty trained) where parents may leave their children for up to five hours, and you don’t have to be a hotel guest to use it. This is to get you to stay there and gamble.

I’m not defending the practice, but letting you know why they do what they do. Next time, you certainly have the option of doing your homework and staying at a more child friendly hotel like Circus Circus. With a family or any smaller group, you might think about renting a car. When you add up the bus or cab fare, and the convenience, it might turn out to be one of your better vacation investments.

Thanks for the input. We gave Darkstone kind words, which are archived at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/david-darkstone-frontier-las-vegas-hotels.htm However, this is a perfect time to note how we review shows. None of this A – F grade or “2.5 stars.” Why? Everybody has different tastes and a different budget. We judge a show based on value: Is it worth the money? Then we also note who is more or less inclined to enjoy the show.

Do we think Darkstone is worth the $12.99 (one drink included with price)? Yes. Also good to bring kids to, especially since a family budget can usually handle that price. Does the intimate setting put you close to the action, letting you see it up close and not seeing any “funny business” that a big stage can hide? Absolutely. Is it one of the huge magic shows with large sets, tons of assistants, and larger than life illusions? Not at all.

Please keep in mind, most Las Vegas shows are priced in line with what you can expect (the basic price … not some VIP package that puts you so close you are craning your neck). If we tell you that an inexpensive show is a good value, good for people on a budget, or affordable for a family, you can’t expect the bang that a $75 show is going to give you. We enjoy catering to a wide variety of readers!

Zagat publishes a very serious guide to Las Vegas dining. It is under $10 and available at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1570062862/invegascom

Most restaurants have a menu posted out front. If they don’t, the hostess will always be happy to let you look at one. We strongly suggest doing so to avoid any surprises when the bill comes. Even if you sit down and find the prices beyond what you are prepared to pay for the surroundings, you can always excuse yourself. Anything from “I’m sorry but it turns out this isn’t want we had in mind” to “One of our group members doesn’t feel well and we need to cut our visit short” will do.

I’m not sure how you ended up at Circus Circus buffet, but every few months we note that it and Holiday Inn Boardwalk are the two worst in town. For lunch or dinner, we strongly suggest the buffets at Bellagio, Aladdin, Mirage, Harrah’s and the evening seafood buffet at Flamingo (every night for $14.95).

We have archived reviews on some of these at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/las-vegas-buffets.htm (I just realize we have not actually reviewed the Aladdin dinner buffet even though I probably talk it up once every two months. Do yourself a favor and enjoy it). On the flip side, the buffets I just listed run 2-3 times the price of Circus buffet. You tend to get what you pay for.

We agree with our assessment of Tournament of Kings. We reviewed it here about four months ago, and you can read our archived review at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/tournament-of-kings-las-vegas-shows.htm

I have not had the buffet there, but the $5.99 Prime Rib special served 24/7 in the coffee shop is a good value! For those unfamiliar with San Remo, it is just east of The Tropicana hotel on Tropicana Ave. and is a good place for those looking for a nice, but more intimate and friendly casino.

You certainly traveled around this entire region, and I’m very glad to hear you enjoy it. I was talking about this newsletter with a friend recently, noting what a wonder the internet is. I can publish this to readers in any country with internet access with a punch of a button. I know that many of you from other parts of the world have to spend some serious money to get here, saving up, getting significant time off work, flying 10, 15, 20 hours … and I’m happy that we help you make the most out of your Las Vegas trips!

We’ve mentioned it — I’ll check why our newsletter archive search engine isn’t picking it up. For those who have not heard of CAPS, many hotels let you check in to your airline and check your bags directly at your hotel. All you do is head to the airport, take your boarding pass to the gate, and get on the plane! The charge is $6 a person, but not a bad price for peace of mind and buying yourself more time having fun in Las Vegas.

Has anyone used it? What did you think? Help everyone out by writing us at (click) mailto:allvegastv@aol.com Also, we have a transportation section on our Comment Las Vegas boards. If you like Elvis, the Elvis Museum is a “must see.” We reviewed it here a little more than a year ago, and you can read that review archived (with photos) at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/ekvis-a-rama-museum-las-vegas.htm

Long time readers might remember that I was going to put together a list of good parking spots and the like a LONG time ago. It got shoved to the bottom of the “to do” pile, but I will make it a point to get on it. As most of our readers (based on feedback) rent a car to maximize the ability to get around and see everything, I’m sure it will be of value. For you who have yet to visit town, the Las Vegas Strip is 4 miles long, and the Fremont Street Experience (downtown) is another two miles past the North end of The Strip. Thus, the interest in transportation.

I will also include the monorails / trams. For those curious, free monorails / trams run between:

1. Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay
2. Monte Carlo and Bellagio
2. Bally’s and MGM
4. Mirage and Treasure Island

As far as the city bus and “Strip Trolley” (a private run bus that looks like a trolley car), I get more complaints about those than almost anything else. People come to town, wanting to save a couple bucks, and they ride the bus ($2 per person) or the Trolley (about the same fare … have not checked lately) up and down The Strip.

Often, especially at peak times, these are crowded beyond belief. The city buses that run The Strip get so full they will blow by stops with people waiting because they have no room on board. As it is, they not only wind their way through Strip traffic, but make stops every couple blocks which can make a 10 minute car ride take 30 minutes.

Unless you really booze it up, or have a fear of driving on roads you aren’t used to, rent a car. We hope you compare our rates, but regardless of where you rent, consider this: Your vacation time is valuable when you look at the cost of airfare, food, and hotel. The time you save between destinations and the convenience of not standing in the weather only to have bus after bus pass you up makes the car well worth it.

Walter went on to note the rest of the major inconveniences related to having a hold put on his credit card. It is getting more common for hotels to ask you if you want a hold put on your card for incidentals. If you have plenty of room left on your credit limit, no big deal. But if not, it can really cause problems because the hold eats up your available credit.

However, policies are NOT standard between hotels so this is a great thing to be aware of. Some will put no hold on, but you can’t even make local calls until you OK the hold. Others will put it on without asking you. Word to the wise: When you check in, ask “Is there a hold being put on my credit card for incidentals, and if so, how much”?

If your credit limit is an issue, and you plan to use your credit card to charge expenses during your vacation, make sure they don’t put a hold on it. You might forfeit your right to make phone calls from your room, but it beats the alternative.

Speaking of phone calls, with most hotels charging $1 or more for local calls, and dollars per minute for long distance, bring your cell phone if it has roaming or buy a calling card and make your calls from a pay phone. Our advertiser Cognigen has a great 8.9 cents a minute, no surcharge card available at http://www.accessvegas.com/cogni-talk.htm

The tickets must be acquired in person and the specially marked free kids tickets are available only at the time the adult ticket is purchased and are subject to availability. RADIO UPDATE — As speculated here last week, KBYE 105.7 FM has indeed launched as a smooth jazz station. 100.1 FM is now “K-Hits” (general Top 40 from the past couple decades). 89.1 FM is Christian Hit Radio “Air 1.” An updated list of Las Vegas radio and TV stations is available at http://www.accessvegas.com/tvradio.htm

EDITORS NOTE: I’m doing some traveling this week, so I’m happy to present a guest review submitted by readers Russell and Gail Howard. Next week, the long awaited review of Blue Man Group. After that, WB Stage 16 Restaurant (if they ever get me their press kit — I like the place) and Excalibur Tournament of Kings. As always noted at the end of the “Letter’s To The Editor” section, guest reviews are gladly considered.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

V-BAR – at The Venetian continues to be a “best kept secret” hot spot, although it won’t be a secret for long. I am often asked where to go to spot celebrities, and with all of the upscale hotels and activities in town, I’d generally say “don’t waste your vacation time searching.” However, the V-Bar has probably become your best bet. Their staff notes recent visits by Julio Iglesias Jr., Charles Barkley, A.J. of the Backstreet Boys, and various actors in the past couple of months.

V-Bar is open from 4 PM to 4 AM daily. It is a somewhat intimate, upscale bar. The action doesn’t pick up until later in the evening, and a relaxed dress code is enforced (look nice). Even if you aren’t celeb hunting, it is a nice spot to take a date or just relax away from the tables for a while.

STORM – The delays in Mandalay Bay’s new show Storm is attributed to additional building inspections following some design changes during the construction of the set. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-20-Tue-2001/living/15666596.html In the wake of the 1980 fire at Bally’s (then called the MGM Grand, not to be confused with the huge green hotel now at Trop and The Strip), not only are building standards tighter but inspections are very comprehensive. Similar inspections delayed the openings of both The Venetian and The Aladdin.

BON JOVI WEDDING – Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea are going to renew their vows in Las Vegas at the same wedding chapel they married at 11 years ago. This time, they are turning it into a promotion with 75 couples in tow who won various radio station and other contests taking the plunge for the first time. The wedding will take place at the Graceland Wedding Chapel after Bon Jovi’s April 21 concert here. Full story at http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/mar21_bon-ap.html

LANCE BURTON’S – new special “Master Magician On The Road” airs March 31, 2001 on the Fox Family Channel. Check local listings for channel and time.

OSCAR ODDS – The “Vegas Line” on the Academy Award winners is up. You can’t actually bet on them, because Nevada law prohibits betting one anything where the outcome is known but they make a fun read at http://www.nypost.com/03222001/entertainment/27069.htm

CONVENTIONS – Chicago has long been the convention capital of the world, but Las Vegas and Orlando are after their business. The Las Vegas Convention Center is almost finished with construction that will double its size and both cities are touting themselves to convention planners as warm weather, resort alternatives to Chicago’s cold winters. Story at http://www.suntimes.com/output/business/conv16.html

CULT VEGAS – is the new book by Review-Journal entertainment writer Mike Weatherford. It combines his odd fascination with both Las Vegas and American pop culture. It includes both the standard icons like Sinatra and Elvis and the more offbeat and unusual. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-18-Sun-2001/living/15631075.html and the book is available from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0929712714/invegascom

SMOKING – Nevada has the highest death rate from smoking-related diseases in the country and some of the weakest tobacco laws in the United States, allowing smoking just about everywhere except public elevators and school buses. Hearings are underway to tighten those laws on a statewide level, but many are wary of the harsh restrictions of neighboring California, where smoking is even prohibited in bars. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-14-Wed-2001/news/15637012.html In relation to that, this week’s poll at http://www.accessvegas.com asks you “How do you feel about smoking in casinos”?

NO GRIZZLIES – As conjectured here a couple weeks ago, Las Vegas’ bid to land the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies was stymied because we refuse to give up legal sports betting. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-16-Fri-2001/sports/15657023.html

OFFICIAL? – You may have seen these “official” Las Vegas tourist info centers along the Strip, but many are just fronts for time-share pitches that prey on people overwhelmed with wondering what to do or see. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-13-Tue-2001/living/15593603.html

FEATURE STORY: Imperial Palace

by Russell and Gail Howard

We just returned from our third Vegas trip in three years, in fact our
second since last July, and were once again very, very pleased by the
Imperial Palace.

I know that opinions range widely on this older denizen of The Strip,
but our experiences have been quite fine there. Let me break down
why:

First, the rooms themselves. We have stayed in the standard rooms
(nothing to complain about at all, and a killer price), as well as the
mini-suite (“luv tub” rooms), which are oversized rooms with ENORMOUS
bathtubs, mirror canopy beds, balconies, and what feels like a lot of
extra room, also a great price at about 60 bucks a night. Our room is
mostly our headquarters for crashing when we’re in Vegas, and these
work great.

Second, the Casino. My wife is a slot player, and has done well. I
am a video poker player, and I vastly prefer 9/6 machines, which are
getting harder and harder to find for under a buck, but IP comes
through with several quarter machines. I can play for a long, long
time for ten bucks on a 9/6 quarter machine!

Third, one need not be a “high roller,” which I clearly am not, in
order to feel welcome / well treated at IP. For example, I perceive
that I get as many free cherry cokes (the teetotaler thing, again)
when I’m playing nickel video poker as I do when I decide to go hog
wild (for me) and play dollar video poker.

Fourth, the staff. I get to know a lot of the change booth folks and
the waitresses. Never, once, in three stays at IP have I had anything
less than a great experience with an employee. They actually seem to
enjoy what they are doing. I don’t know how you train folks for
friendliness, but something is working here. I seek to be polite, of
course, and try to tip enough that I am acknowledging people’s
efforts, though not exorbitantly, but I have found the team to be
first rate.

Fifth, the show. The most significant show at IP, in the winter when
the Luau thing is not happening, is “Legends in Concert,” which we
caught for the first time this past Wednesday night. I really don’t
like maitre’d seating, preferring reserved theatre seats, so I viewed
the seating setup as a minus. However, the show itself, which varies
from time to time, included dead-on “tributes” to Tina Turner,
Madonna, Rod Stewart, The Temptations (easily the crowd’s favorite),
Liza Minnelli, and Elvis. All the musicians do their own singing. The
dancers were attractive and well choreographed. We really enjoyed
this show. We would repeat it, though we would repeat it all the more
enthusiastically if the seating were theatre-style.

Sixth, the location. Absolutely unbeatable. Within three blocks of
Venetian, Treasure Island, Mirage, Harrah’s, Caesar’s, Bally’s, Paris,
and Bellagio. All are easy walking distance, if you like to
casino-hop. And if you catch the tram from Bally’s, you’re at MGM
with Monte Carlo, New York New York, Excalibur, Luxor, and the
Tropicana all with easy walking distance. You will not top IP’s
location.

We are a married couple, upper thirties. On this trip, we took my Mom
and dad along, upper sixties. We plan to take some other relatives
out to LV this fall, and look forward to another fun stay at the
Imperial Palace. We have become loyalists.

We just returned from our third Vegas trip in three years, in fact our
second since last July, and were once again very, very pleased by the
Imperial Palace.

I’ll skip my opinion for now because I don’t want to influence what you readers might say. Take a minute and jot down where you take that someone special here in Las Vegas and email it to (click) mailto:romance@in-vegas.com (David: I don’t have your email address my laptop here. Blue Man Group review is next week. I enjoyed it, but it is very stimulating to all the senses.

The show is still reasonably impressive overall, with the effects and involved cast. With any good fortune, Mr. Springfield will be in better health and settling more comfortably into the show.

Curious about a show, restaurant, or other Las Vegas attraction that looks fun? Let us review it for you first! Suggestions are always welcome at: mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

EDITORS NOTE: Coming reviews (all shows we have seen) include Blue Man Group (Luxor – funny and wacky, not a traditional Vegas show but well worth the money for those up to sensory overload in a good way), Mac King Comedy Magic (Harrah’s – this is a must see if you have even one ounce of humor in your body, best show value in town), Viva Las Vegas (Stratosphere – good afternoon budget traditional Las Vegas show), and Clint Holmes (Harrah’s – good jazz and soul influenced standards and originals tied together by a true entertainer and talented band).

Full reviews of each will appear over the next few weeks but I wanted to give a synopsis for those visiting sooner. Mini-reviews and ticket purchase info for each show available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-shows.htm

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

THE VENETIAN – continues to be a huge success for owner Sheldon Adelson despite a rough opening (the hotel wasn’t quite ready), union pressure (it is non-union), and higher interest notes (construction funding) than a large corporation would have been able to garner. The hotel is showing a profit, and they are finally getting serious regarding the expansion that will double the hotel’s size. In addition, expansion and remodeling of high roller suites will place the hotel in competition for “whales” (the highest of the high rollers with casino credit lines starting at $1 million). Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-07-Wed-2001/business/15392620.html

MGM THEME PARK – is changing its focus and the name. Except for the Sky Screamer and a couple of other rides, the rides will be removed and the focus of the park will shift to hosting movie premieres, concerts, and TV shows. The new moniker is “The Park at MGM Grand”. The potential of the park was never fully realized, and ended up not fitting into the new “adults only” theme that many Las Vegas resorts are marketing. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-09-Fri-2001/business/15412185.html

SNOW – As recently reported, Mt. Charleston gets snow during the winter providing a winter wonderland less than an hour from Las Vegas. It is also a popular spot to live for those who want to be reletively close to Las Vegas but don’t want to deal with the summer temperatures and don’t mind the winter snow. Story and photos at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-04-Sun-2001/living/15339174.html

GUGGENHEIM – The infamous museum is on track to open a Las Vegas location at The Venetian by Sept. 15’th of this year. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-03-Sat-2001/news/15372702.html

HOLYFIELD VS. RUIZ 2 – Tickets for this much hyped March 8 rematch taking place at Mandalay Bay are on sale now at (702) 632-7580. Mandalay Bay discount rooms available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas.htm (Mandalay Bay link).

TAILGATE PARTY – Local NBC affiliate KVBC 3 is throwing a free tailgate party this Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium before the kickoff of the Las Vegas Outlaws vs. Los Angeles Xtreme game (5:00 PM tip-off, national broadcast). It is free to the public and will feature food and drink, classic cars, and a bungee run. If you are going to be in town from Southern CA this weekend and want to go, you might wish to buy your tickets online at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/EventInfo?pid=728720 as a sellout is expected.

BEST HOTEL – The Bellagio was picked as the #1 hotel with the most perfect settings and amenities for honeymooning couples by 100 travel agents. The survey was commissioned by Harlequin Enterprises (the publishers of the romance novels). Story at http://www.herald.com/content/today/living/travel/digdocs/065435.htm

FEATURE STORY: The Dream King

Elvis has returned to the building. His legend never left Las Vegas, but now when we think “Elvis impersonator” we think of a guy with a bad dye job, gold sunglasses, and very long sideburns who has seen way too many trips to the buffet. If that is your impression of a “Vegas Elvis”, you have not seen Trent Carlini.

Carlini’s show starts with a video tribute to Elvis, mixing clips of Presley with a Carlini narraration that is part tribute to Elvis and part the story of Carlini’s devotion and love of the music. When Carlini hits the stage, you have to do a double-take because he is virtually a head-to-toe living replica of the younger Elvis.

Throughout the 70 minute show, Carlini takes you through a journey of the various stages of the life of Elvis in song, and does so in matching costume. He appears first as the young Elvis, then performs more work from his early career in a military uniform, after a short but insightful video montage of actual Elvis army footage and interviews. From there, he dons leis and a hawaiin shirt to sing hits from Elvis’ movies.

After another short video, he performs a tribute to the ’68 comeback “Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite” special complete with the black leather outfit. No tribute to The King would be complete without the “Vegas Years” with the big white jumpsuit and a lighthearted lauging version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight”. Elvis fans are probably familiar with the live Las Vegas version of said song done by Elvis where something got him going and he couldn’t stop laughing throughout a part of the song. This segement also included him handing out scarves to some of the lucky ladies in the audience.

If you are a big Elvis fan (or just learned quite a bit watching the many TV specials and documentaries shown on cable TV), you will appreciate many of the nuances like the laughing part that Carlini tosses in.

I’ve seen plenty of Elvis impersonators here in Las Vegas, and most of them get by on the look and moves, with vocal’s that are just in the general vicinity of Presley. Even if you are just a casual fan, you can’t help but to be impressed not just by the physical appearance and moves, but by the voice. Just for fun, I looked well away from the stage a couple of times and just listened. Carlini sounds like Presley. Every note, every cadence, every breath. This was confirmed as I popped his CD in my car during the drive home.

My only complaint? The Boardwalk Showroom is pretty intimate and I thought the sound was well mixed but a touch too loud (in fact, causing he microphone feedback a couple of times). Although Carlini tours the U.S. with a complete backing band (and a ticket price to match), this show is sung live to a backing track but Carlini’s stage presence makes you forget the lack of a band. On the flip side, there isn’t a bad seat in the room. In fact, I sat toward the rear and apprciated that aspect for taking in both the show and his interaction with the crowd.

Obviously, you are going to enjoy this show quite a bit more if you have even a remote interest in Elvis. It is a true tribute show, so don’t expect some guy up doing jokes or magic tricks. This show is Elvis. While there were plenty of couples and guys in the audience, it especially appeared to be a great “girls night out” show as the front row was filled with women doing a little screamng and hollaring.

The Dream King plays Tue. – Sat. evenings at 8:30 PM in the showroom of the Holiday Inn Boardwalk (between Monte Carlo and Bellagio). Tickets are $27.95 and available daily at the hotel box office. We are giving away one copy of both Carlini’s CD and video in our contests section. The Dream King ticket info at http://www.destination-guide.com/detail_shows.cfm?id=250&amid=143&cscheme=2

Thanks, I am indeed feeling better but as a “one man band” (I write this newsletter as well as editing, updating, and maintaining the websites) I fell behind on my schedule. I’m happy to say I’m getting caught up.

Fitzgeralds downtown has an “all you can eat” filet mignon buffet. Don’t waste your time. The quality of the buffet is sub-par, the offerings are meager, and the fillet isn’t that great. While I don’t believe they offer filet mignon, Main St. Station buffet downtown continues to be excellent with almost unlimited variety every night.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

TERRIBLES HOTEL & CASINO – has just opened at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from Bellagio). It is the site of the former Continental, but bears no resemblance to that dive. The hotel has been completely renovated and transformed into an Italian Tuscany-style resort. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Nov-30-Thu-2000/business/14911695.html and we have hotel info and rates at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-other.htm (Terribles Hotel link).

LAS VEGAS BOWL – UNLV and Arkansas both won games at the end of the season to become bowl eligible, and will meet up on Dec. 21 here in Las Vegas. The game will be televised on ESPN but rooms that week are running under $40 at some Strip hotels for those that want to see it live. Stories at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Dec-04-Mon-2000/sports/14956117.html and http://www.sportingnews.com/cfootball/articles/20001204/278065.html , rooms at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm , and tickets at http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/EventInfo?pid=646650

BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS – hit the MGM last night. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Dec-06-Wed-2000/news/14975556.html and a list of winners at http://news.excite.com/news/ap/001206/02/ent-billboard-awards-list Britney Spears didn’t make a lot of friends at Gordon Biersch, failing to leave a tip on a comped meal. Story on that at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Dec-06-Wed-2000/news/14970702.html

MEAL DEALS – The day of the 99 cent buffet is long gone, but Las Vegas still has a few great meal deals around. The catch? Many of them are off the menu. Every few months, we mention the Hard Rock’s complete steak and shrimp dinner for $5.95 (available in the coffee shop). The R-J notes a number of others at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Nov-15-Wed-2000/living/14796640.html Print that article out and bring it on your next trip!

GOLD POINT GHOST TOWN – If you really want to explore the “wild west,” this one is for you. Multi-jackpot winner (some people have all the luck)! Herb Robbins used some of the cash to buy the ghost town of Gold Point, NV. He has spruced the place up just a little, and if you are willing to take the 3 hour drive north of Las Vegas, you can get bed and breakfast and take yourself back in time a bit. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Nov-14-Sun-1999/news/12286326.html , photos at http://www.ghosttowngallery.com/htme/goldpoint.htm , and info and reservations at http://www.goldpointghosttown.com

GUGGENHEIM – Two of the most prestigious names in the art world, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the State Hermitage Museum of Russia, announced plans for an ambitious project in Las Vegas, including a seven-story museum. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Oct-21-Sat-2000/news/14653795.html

MONORAIL – The Strip monorail project is on track, and will run from the MGM to The Sahara. Interestingly enough, it turns east in the Vicinity of The Venetian, missing much of the upper Strip. Story and map at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Nov-10-Fri-2000/news/14795508.html

EFX – Changes are afloat. Rick Springfield takes over the lead roll from Tommy Tune in two months, and plans to take the show in more of an energetic rock direction. Full story at http://tv.zap2it.com/news/tvnewsdaily.html?14349

AT THE COPA – is no more. The show has sold well, but rumors of conflict between producer (and star) David Cassidy and costar Sheena Easton have been in the air almost from day one. Full story at http://news.excite.com/news/ap/001202/01/ent-david-cassidy

GUNS ‘N ROSES – are playing Las Vegas New Year’s Eve at the House of Blues. Full story and ticket info at http://www.mtv.com/sendme.tin?page=/news/headlines/001206/story6.html Although I was a marginal fan of the group, I won’t be shelling out the $150 – $250 for a band who’s singer has a habit of wrecking shows with his tantrums.

FEATURE STORY: Hoover Dam

hoover-dam.jpg (17845 bytes)Hoover Dam has often been referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. If you have flown in from the east or the south, you might have seen it from the air, but nothing can compare to seeing it up close and in person.

Built between 1931 – 1935 to harness the flow of the Colorado River, Hoover Dam is primarily responsible for storing the water used by people and agriculture in the desert southwest including Arizona, California, and Nevada. California is entitled to 4,400,000 acre-feet, Arizona 2,800,000 acre-feet, and Nevada, 300,000 acre-feet a year from the river, and the dam stores it for constant release regardless of season. Sitting only 30 miles from the Strip, it is also a top tourist attraction for Las Vegas visitors.

Visiting the dam is a unique experience! With US 93 running across it, you are completely free to roam on the top of the dam. The view over the edge 550+ feet in the air and down Black Canyon on the Colorado River is worth the trip all by itself. For a $4 admission, the visitor’s center contains quite a bit of historical and interesting photos and exhibits. There is also a self-guided tour which you can print out online at http://www.hooverdam.com/service/Sgt2.pdf

However, the real fun are the two tours offered. The shorter tour is fine for most. Taking 30 minutes, you go down into the dam and view the generators and are taken at to the base of the dam, where you can peer down the canyon and up toward the top of the towering structure. However, if you have a sense of adventure or are more interested in the technical inner workings, the one hour Hard Hat tours is a must.

You descend into the side of the dam in an elevator cut through the volcanic rock, and after a short walk through a pure rock tunnel, emerge in the generator room. Unlike the short tour, you are taken via another elevator to the floor of the generating area where you stand next to the huge encased turbines.

You also are taken down below the generating area where you stand just above one of the pipes feeding water through the giant electrical turbines, and can actually see the shaft of the turbine rotating. From there it is outside, for the same magnificent view of the canyon and up at the dam that you enjoy with the shorter tour. You are also taken into tunnels where you can see the huge pipes that were buried in the walls of the canyon.

A real highlight of this trip is touring the inside of the dam itself, which is lined with two miles of tunnels that serve both for drainage (all dams have a minor amount of seepage inside) and inspection. When looking down over the edge of the dam (and especially looking up from the bottom), you might notice a few vents on the side of the dam. Guess what — on the hard hat tour you can actually walk to the vent and peer out at the canyon from the inner center of the dam. Truly amazing.

The tours is not for the claustrophobic, especially the hard hat tour where you take 10 separate elevator rides with 20 people to each elevator car, and also walk the interior tunnels of the dam which are around 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall.

The visitor center is open from 8:00 AM to 5:45 PM. Tours start at 8:30 AM and run the remainder of the day. Parking on the Nevada side (in the garage) is $3.00. Parking on the Arizona side is free. The Traditional tour is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $2 for kids 7 – 16. The Hard Hat tour is $25 and includes a hard hat which you get to keep.

For those without transportation, we offer Hoover Dam tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours/hoover-dam-tours.htm If you have drove to town or are renting a car, the dam is easy to find. Head south on The Strip to I-215. Go east on I-215 for about 10 miles until the freeway ends at a set of stoplights. Continue straight about 1/2 mile (I-215 turns into Lake Mead Dr.) to the junction with US 93/95 and head south. Stay on US 93 for the next 20 miles or so (through and past Boulder City). US 93 crosses the dam so once on US 93, you can’t get lost.

An alternate, more scenic route is to skip turning off to US 93/95 and stay on Lake Mead drive. Just stay on it (there will only be one fork in the road: veer right) — it is named Lake Mead Drive for a reason! This route is about 10 miles longer but skirts the lake with some great views before returning to US 93 just a couple miles from the dam. There is a toll station collecting $5 per car on this route.

IMPORTANT: Hoover Dam is a very popular attraction and US 93 also carries thousands of cars each day as the main road southeast out of Las Vegas. Plus, the dam is at a lower elevation than Las Vegas, resulting in temperatures that can be 10 degrees hotter than in the city. This can be brutal late spring to early fall. Also, the tours are usually the least crowded and most available early in the day. Hit the road early. Grab a cheap buffet breakfast at the Railroad Pass Casino (on your left just after crossing the railroad tracks as you head out of town on US 93/95) and get there early to beat the crowds and the heat.

Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

Thanks for the kind words. Everybody continues to note that the service fee is a small price for guaranteed tickets before you arrive. You can always punch in the dates of your visit at http://www.showvegas.com/svpricing.cfm?amid=3230&cscheme=1 and see which shows and headliners are playing and how much the tickets are.

I am in my mid-30’s and went to see Jerry Lewis to review the show and see a living legend, but not expecting much. Boy was I wrong! For those who missed my Jerry Lewis review a few months ago, it is archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-09-13.htm

I’ve only seen the Venetian rooms (very impressive true suites). Readers, have you stayed at both Mandalay and Venetian? Give us a room comparison at allvegastv@aol.com

We are glad you had a great time! Unfortunately, it is feast or famine with the taxi drivers. The cab companies, like many other businesses, are having trouble finding and keeping good help. If you are at all geographically inclined, it never hurts to buy a Las Vegas city map so you can have a clue whether they are taking you the best route. If you ever have a dispute or feel that you got ripped off by a cab driver, get the name of the company and the cab number from the side of the cab and call the Taxicab Authority at (702) 486-6532

MIRAGE BOTANICAL GARDENS – According to R-J columnist NORM!, the botanical gardens as well as the Dale Chihuly glass flower sculpture over the lobby are staying put for now. With the MGM in control, I personally give the gardens 6 months and expect a decline in quality. LION HABITAT UNDER FIRE – An animal rights organization is condemning the MGM’s Lion Habitat (reviewed at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-07-28.htm ), calling it exploitation. The MGM has countered, noting that the lions are kept on an 8-acre facility when not in the habitat, and portions of the proceeds go to animal preservation organizations. FEATURE STORY: Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse

Unfortunately, Binion’s Horseshoe Casino hasn’t been in the news for it’s long time reputation of good food and fair gaming lately. The Binion Murder trial has been watched all over the United States.

Others (including us) have grumbled over the loss of many of the great specials like the late night $3 steak special. But the place that family patriarch Benny Binion founded still keeps alive the spirit he brought to his downtown property.

Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse is part of that tradition. This is upscale dining with prime beef and a view to die for while still maintaining that friendly down-home feel you’ve come to expect from Binion’s. If those trendy places where they put more importance on choosing the decorator instead of the chef bug you, this is your place. The decor is nice, reasonably plush, but understated.

Look up to the very top of Binion’s and you see two-story glass wrapped around the top of the building. I used to think those were the high-roller suites. But NO, that is the steakhouse! The view is unique, letting you see over the rest of downtown to the Strip and far beyond.

Service is down-home also. Helpful, but not at all pretentious. Hate those guys at the high-end places with the fake accents and waiters with foreign names (co’mon — they can’t all be Pierre from Paris), you’ll enjoy the “real” feel of the wait staff. Good service, but relaxed and with a smile.

Between generous portion size and the items served with the main course, appetizers aren’t really necessary. However, they are available: Jumbo Gulf Shrimp Cocktail, Scampi A Las Maison, Oysters on the Half Shell, Oysters Rockefeller, and Escargot Bourguignonne. They range from $9.95 to $12.95.

All main courses are served with soup of the day or salad, rice pilaf, baked potato or roasted garlic mashed and warm sourdough bread — a personal favorite. You can order soups or salads: House Salad ($4.95), Caesar Salad ($6.95), French Onion Soup ($4.75), Greek Salad ($9.95) and Crab Chowder served in a sourdough bowl ($5.75)

Specialties are meat, meat, and more meat. A regular cut of prime rib runs $27.00, but splurge for the “Benny Cut” at $32.00 and see if you can eat it all! Other specialties are Broiled Spring Lamb Chops ($28.50), Veal Marlala ($24.00), Broiled Chicken Breasts ($22.00), Steak Diane ($25.00) and Binion’s famous Pepper Steak, a 16 oz. New York Steak rolled in cracked peppercorns, sautÚed and topped with Brandy cream sauce for $30.00.

Steak lovers rejoice! I had the Filet Mignon. 12 oz. that I could almost cut with a fork despite my insistence that they cook it medium well ($28.00). Also available are the New York Steak (16 oz., $27.00), Ribeye (16 oz., $25.00) and the Porterhouse (21 oz. extra-thick cut, $30.00).

Seafood includes Australian Lobster Tail (market price), Alaskan King Crab Legs (2 pounds, $42.50), Scampi A La Maison ($28.50), Braised Halibut Filet ($25.50), and Broiled Salmon ($22.50). Both Surf and Turf (petite filet and rock lobster) and the Petite Filet Mignon and Crab Legs are market price.

You aren’t paying for just the view — the food is excellent also. Go right around sunset. Nothing compares to an unobstructed view, watching the Strip and the entire Las Vegas valley light up while a piece of prime steak dissolves in your mouth. Although we had no problem getting a table at about 8:00 PM on a weeknight unannounced, we suggest reservations at (702) 382-1600 and they are open 5-11 PM.

Good question! Yes and no. We really don’t have one of those huge, “The sky never goes dark for 45 minutes” shows. The Stratosphere is having fireworks again this year. Last year was a let-down as they shot them off from behind the building (not from the Tower) and most people were too close to see them properly. If you go to the Strat, the best view is a couple of blocks down the Strip or back aways in any direction (avoid the neighborhood behind the casino — it’s a high crime area).

There are some pretty good displays around town in the suburbs. They are listed at http://www.lasvegas.com/events/4thofjuly If you have a car, I’d suggest the one at Desert Breeze Park put on by the County. We’ll have more details on the New Years Eve fireworks as they become available.

Good question. We’ve been following the fate of the El Rancho (shuttered property in the north end of the Strip) on http://www.accessvegas.com but I failed to mention anything here.

The company building the high-rise condos behind the El Rancho bought it for $45 million just to get rid of the eyesore for potential buyers, and they are having a “fire sale” before demolishing it. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Jun-03-Sat-2000/business/13703431.html No word on an implosion yet. This one might be done by wrecking ball as it’s not that big.

As long time readers know, we tend to shy away from idle speculation and rumor and only print things when the ink on the deals are dry so you don’t run into any disappointments. However, if you are interested in something like this that we haven’t mentioned here, do drop us a line. Info is directly below.
