Hello From Las Vegas! I for one am certainly thankful that winter seems to be over. December is the coldest month of the year (and the least fun as it gets dark so early). 104 F (our average high for July and August) doesn’t phase me. Lows around freezing? That’s an issue. Sunshine has been plentiful and sunsets have had a spectacular pink hue lately.

Fremont Street “North” – Zappos.com head honcho Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay) is on a single-handed mission to completely finish reviving downtown Las Vegas. Granted, the momentum was already there with the revitalization of East Fremont Street (aka Fremont East), a new performing arts center, new Golden Nugget tower, and complete overhauls of the El Cortez, Gold Spike, and Plaza.

Buried in a recent story about how he’d like to buy the 51’s (our AAA minor league baseball team) was an interesting note about improving the infrastructure of the current stadium which sits just 7 blocks north of Fremont Street (about the same distance as Plaza to El Cortez). This could encourage people to walk from downtown to the stadium (actually walking on Las Vegas Blvd. North) just as people now walk the Fremont East area.

This area is already called the Culture Corridor as it is home to the Las Vegas Library , the Las Vegas Natural History Museum , the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company , Lied Discovery ChildrenÆs Museum , The Neon Museum , the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort and State Historic Park. Of course, it is also home to some boarded up buildings and a few empty lots. I’m not suggesting that this is all going to happen overnight. It was upwards of a decade ago that you heard me predicting the renaissance that we’ve now seen downtown.

He’d also really be in a position to boost baseball attendance among younger people, making attending a game a “happening” thing to do. How? Simple: Give any unsold tickets to the 1000+ employees which will be working downtown when Zappos finishing moving their headquarters.

Mark my words: I believe some of the greatest increase in housing values in the next few years will be in the general downtown area (within 2 miles of the downtown core). These houses built in the 50’s are often going for under $60k, making them super-affordable to the young Zappos employees and others who are now loving downtown and will crave living close to both work and all of the cool new hangouts.

Midnight Hockey – A couple times per year, the Las Vegas Wranglers (our local minor league hockey team) plays at midnight. The most recent outing, they drew over 4500 people! They are doing it again on the night of Feb. 19 (tickets). If you’re a hockey fan and want a unique experience, you might want to check it out. Las Vegas is a great place to live if you are a night owl or super-early riser. With all the overlapping shifts at the hotels, casinos, and nightclubs, there’s usually something interesting happening somewhere!

Better Treatment For International Visitors – This June, international flight arrivals will move to McCarran’s Terminal 3, leaving the terrible,e dated, cramped Terminal 2 behind. It has been ironic that those who fly the furthest always had the worst entry to our fair city. Terminal 3 will feature seven gates for international arrivals, a large and modern customs area, and some fine dining for those with time to kill. (No one really wants to eat fast food before a 12 hour flight).

Hello From Las Vegas! Usually I tell you how busy things have been on the Las Vegas Strip, but we experienced a little bit of that June lull mid-week this past week. With the weather getting nice in the northern hemisphere and graduation taking center stage, June represents soft travel to Las Vegas. Things are set to pick back up again as summer gets into high gear!

We continue to add fireworks, concerts, and other events to our Fourth of July 2009 page. If you are coming for The 4’th, keep an eye on it. We add to it every couple of days as information becomes available!

Ensign Oooops – We don’t do much politics here, but occasionally I’ll offer a little local insight on a national story that has Las Vegas connections. This past week, US Senator John Ensign (R-Nevada) admitted to a 9 month affair with a close family friend. Given Ensign’s family values platforms, this obviously wasn’t his best career move.

Having said that… the fallout is pretty tepid. This is a real “live and let live” state. I’m not defending his actions, but the buzz surrounding this story seem to pale as compared to the new of the cause of Danny Gans’ death. Speaking of…

Danny Gans Death – Was determined to be from a very powerful painkiller that was in his system. He had a prescription for it, but that prescription was five years old. Although he hid it well, those close to Gans said that he was in constant chronic pain from years of athletic endeavors (including a stint in minor league baseball) and from the pounding his body took during his show.

Obviously, plenty of conjecture as to why. It was noted that the pain medication in combination with his high blood pressure medication and a heart/blood condition may have all come together in a very bad way. Word to the wise: Before digging out that old prescription, make sure it doesn’t mix poorly with what you presently take or any physical conditions that may have worsened over time.

George Wallace has been thinkin’, and his audience is privy to the hilarious results in his show, I Be Thinkin’, in the Flamingo Hotel Showroom.

Attendees are treated to a classic show experience similar to what visitors of Vegas’ heyday must have experienced. Guests aren’t merely herded into a huge theatre constructed with hundreds of seats. Instead, a more genteel, supper club atmosphere is arranged in the showroom, more conducive to a comedy or variety show. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

My husband and I have been traveling to Vegas for several years now and enjoy each trip. We just recently returned from a 6 day holiday. We stayed and The Venetian and once again, it was excellent. The rooms are large, beautiful and most of all clean! The Grand Lux coffee shop is well priced with huge portions. Actually we found pricing better in comparison to Bally’s coffee shop.

After several years of saying we’ll try it, we had dinner at Battista’s – A Whole in the Wall. It was fantastic and brought back memories especially drinking wine out of the juice glasses! That’s how it is in Italy – Mama Mia!

For the first time though we found it very annoying all the people trying to sell time shares or “tickets for free”. They were everywhere we turned it seemed and in our face all the time.

I been an avid reader of your newsletter for years! Thanks for keeping me informed of my favorite city in the world!

Thanks for the great letter! The casinos are trying to make an extra buck with the time share people (who rent the space they use). The best way to ditch them? Tell them you are leaving the next day (or that you live here).

Battista’s Hole In The Wall is loved by regular visitors from around the world. A true one-of-a-kind place. It is a little tough to find: It sits in a mini-mall just behind the Flamingo Hotel at Flamingo and Audrie (just where the monorail crosses Flamingo). The nice thing? It is literally a 3 minute walk from The Strip and well worth the time for a visitor to at least poke their head in and take a peek!

I’ve been enjoying your newsletter, but I miss your podcasts. Your genuine enthusiasm and really knowledgeable comments and news were fun to hear. The newsletters are great, but there was something special about hearing you podcasting.

In all the years I’ve been coming to Las Vegas, I’ve only ventured downtown once since the old days and that was just to see the fabulous sound and visual display, the Fremont Experience. However, since my primary gambling is craps and blackjack, I’ve been interested in your suggestions about heading down there because of the looser slots and possibly lower minimum bets. The slots have almost no appeal for me, but I have always enjoyed the live excitement of the table games. Since I came of age in a time when the men played the tables and the ladies played the slots, I’ve always felt uncomfortable sitting at those silly machines. Now they are even sillier since they look like video games for kids.

The trouble is that over the years, the minimum bets have risen way beyond the $5.00 or $10.00 bets I was able to feel comfortable with. When I was a lot younger and learning how to play craps, there was a particularly memorable visit downtown where I could, risk as little as 25 cents on the pass line! I don’t expect the MBA types who are likely are running the show these days can understand how on earth they could make much money that way. The fact is that one visit made me a lifetime craps player, because I was able to play long enough to learn the game well.

The result is that even though my hotel preferences are Bellagio, Mirage, etc. because of the ambiance, pools, spas, lounges, shows, etc., I don’t get much of a chance to have fun gambling anymore, since after a few bad rolls of the dice, my daily self-imposed limit is reached and exceeded. Yes, I could afford to play the higher priced minimum tables, but the fact is that it’s not fun anymore, because I would lose money more than I care to.

Could you do a quick survey and let us know whether there are any $5-$10 craps and blackjack tables in the downtown area? Maybe there are some other casinos, not too far from the strip where I might go. What about the places actual locals go? Many years ago, when my parents were living in Vegas, they always knew the best casinos where you had a reasonable chance. They also knew all the best restaurant deals too. They are gone now, but fortunately we have Ted Newkirk to give us good advice from his unique perspective as a resident and enthusiastic Las Vegan (?) (but you do eat meat, right?).

We are still hoping to get back to the podcasts. We are finally (and I mean FINALLY) wrapping up an expansion that has taken over a year. As we’ve gone along, things just got bigger and bigger. We’ve added many things we never envisioned a year ago like our new EasyVegasDeals.com, Twitter feed, and huge expanded restaurant listings including the ability to make restaurant reservations online (going live in the next couple of weeks).

Soon will also be debuting a vastly expanded activities section where you can find out about (and book) activities ranging from Dinner In The Sky to VenetianáRomance Packages (think gondola and a romantic meal) to Tandem Skydiving over Las Vegas! Then, we’ll look to dust off the podcast equipment.

Table limits are always in a constant state of flux (depending on time of week and time of year), but $3 games can still be found in many downtown casinos. The Orleans is rumored to have a $2 game some of the time, but we have yet to confirm that.

Although people who live in Las Vegas are called Las Vegans, I certainly am no stranger to a good steak!

Ted, I love reading this newsletter. I think one of the failing casinos should hire you to run it (I will be your assistant) as you know and understand why people who made this city come here. We come to eat cheap, drink cheap, sleep cheap, with the hopes of winning enough to pay for it. If any of these three are not available we stop or cut back on our visits. The high rollers didnÆt make this city and they wonÆt bring it back! Keep up your hawking of down town we love it!!!!

Local Housing Market – is looking to be in the tank a long time. I won’t spend a long time on it, but a little bit of new news: The highest areas of foreclosure in the Las Vegas area are in the Northwest (and far Northwest part of town in areas like Centennial Hills). Especially for those of you from out of town who are financially stable and thinking of buying a vacation home here, think twice about buying in these areas. Here’s why:

Las Vegas is really spread out. Most of the newer development (including in this area) is a long drive from The Strip. (Long time locals joke that it should be called “South Reno” as it seems like you have driven halfway to Reno to get there). What good is a dirt cheap foreclosure when you are nowhere near The Strip or the airport?

Now… if you are moving to retire or moving here with a family and don’t care about being close to business centers, the airport, or The Strip, this might be for you. New, quiet neighborhoods that are no different than living in parts of Phoenix, Albuquerque or newer areas of Southern California. For those wanting more research:

Halloween In Las Vegas Event List – As promised last issue, we have been compiling a list of Las Vegas Halloween Events. More event notices are coming in every few days, so you may want to bookmark that page, tell your friends about it, and check back often.

What happened to coffee pots in the rooms? We just visited Vegas within the last two weeks and were surprised to find the was no coffee in our room (unless of course we wanted to order through room service). My wife does not do well without her coffee the first shot out of the cannon. Then we find we can get coffee at the restaurants at the casinos ($3.00 a cup).

Where we were staying we knew we could get a complimentary cup as long as we were gambling, which is what we did. This brings up another story, it seems that where we were staying you could only get one drink at a time, and could not have two containers in front of you at one time. BOOZE i understand, BUT COFFEE?????????

Other than that had a fine time. this was our 9th trip in 12 years and we watch buildings, casinos and coffee go up toward the sky!!!!!!!

Excellent question. I remember some years ago (this goes way back) when The Rio removed coffee from the rooms because the health department dictated that the maids didn’t have the proper facilities to wash the coffee pot. Some hotels simply replace the pot with a clean one, others may have arranged to have them properlyácleaned by the maids.

Per getting it from a cocktail waitress, she might have been under the gun to follow ever-more-strict rules. You could try tipping her a little more and seeing if she can hustle for more. However… another option that maybe no one thinks about: There are a number of Walgreens/CVS type stores along The Strip. Stop in and BUY a $10 coffee maker and a $5 can of coffee. You now have coffee in your room for your entire stay, anytime of the day, for the price of what you’d otherwise probably spend on it in a single day. (This is a great tip for bottled water also).

As in-depth as we know Las Vegas, our one weakness may be that we actually do live here, so we rarely get a room. So I toss this out to the readers:

If you can think back to your most recent (or even past few) trips, where did you stay and did the room have a coffee pot in it? Email news editor Mark Jacobs at mark@accessvegas.com and he’ll compile a list!

I have read that you have to wait on line for an hour or more for the seafood buffet before being seated. I & my party of 4 arrive in Vegas on Oct. 26, & planned on going to this buffet for dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 29th. Does waits of an hour or more still apply.

Hap is already going to be in town by the time this comes out, but I did fire him the following note:

Wait lines depend on buffet, time of day, and day or week. If you really want to check out a certain buffet, go Sunday through Thursday and arrive within 30 minutes after the dinner buffet hours start or wait until about an hour before the buffet closes for the evening to avoid the longest lines.

Hi Ted,

I’ve been an avid reader of your e-letters since our first-ever trip to Las Vegas in May of 2007. We had such a fantastic time seeing all the glitz of downtown, the strip, with the entertainment, and the food, etc. We enjoyed it so much that we couldn’t wait to come back again for a second trip this September, 2008!

With your e-letters and a bit of research on my own.. I’ve learned that deals CAN be found… for hotels, entertainment, and dining… as long as you’re looking in the right places. You have to pre-plan you trip.. decide what you want to do.. how much you can afford to spend… for the length of your stay. Your e-letters helped me greatly with those plans… and I thank you.

I’m concerned with all the talks about on the downturns of Vegas. The economy has hurt many communities from coast to coast in the United States… and Las Vegas is not immune to those downturns. Just the reports on the housing market in the entire state of Nevada alone can make that point. With the cutbacks (in various areas) at some of the casino’s — how has that effected the Vegas visitors gambling experiences? Are the casino’s paying out at all these days?

We were lucky to win $800 on a 5 cents slot machine (at maximum bid … of course) at Sahara on the very first day of our May 2007 trip. We used that winning money towards our other gambling times during the entire week we stayed. In between our shows and sight seeing and dining… we like to gamble a little (it IS Vegas after all)… but we’re not liking the idea of throwing our money away on slots if the machines are hardly “loose” because of the Casino revenue issues. What’s your take on the subject?

The downturn in the housing market here has nothing to do with tourism. Too many people moved here and wanted to live the Las Vegas lifestyle without a clue as to how they were going to pay for it. All their friends were getting houses and they wanted one. Add to that the (unfortunate) number of people who bought vacation homes thinking it was a good investment plus the downturn in residential home building, and you had a recipe for disaster.

The condo situation didn’t help. For the most part, only a moron would think that a numerous high-rise condos would work in a city where you can get a 3000 square foot house with a yard and a pool for the price of a 1000 square foot condo. Even Trump Tower here seems to be selling poorly.

The general consensus is that the casinos have tightened slots and table game rules to the point that it is driving away gamblers. People are choosing to see a couple of shows and have some fine dining experiences instead of the disappointment that quick gambling losses seem to bring.

You’ll be able to tell friends and family about seeing Phantom or Mamma Mia for years to come. Similar with what a great meal you had at a celebrity chef or other amazing restaurant. A much better investment then dropping the same amount of cash in a short time at the casino.

We usually get plenty of reader feedback about any problems or changes from previous visits and we haven’t heard much about levels of customer service yet (which means it may not be a problem). If we start hearing about it, we’ll report is as always. The letters that end up here represent what many of our readers are saying!

At your urging, we ventured downtown for the first time. We had this image of seedy, dingy and unsafe. Wow, were we wrong. The atmosphere was delightfully upbeat, day and night, and we never felt unsafe.

We frequented several casinos, restaurants and attractions. Next trip we will skip the Strip altogether! I’ve passed your website onto many people who wonder how we get such great deals. Love the newsletter. Thank you so much.
