Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I was one of the privileged guests at a gaming writer’s party put on by Compton-Dancer Consulting this past week. What made it special? This exclusive event was held in the Sky Villa’s of the Las Vegas Hilton. Yes, the same ones you have seen on the Travel Channel.

No, they aren’t as nice as they look on TV. They are 20 times nicer! Mind-bendingly luxurious almost beyond earthly compare. I understand you can stay there is you have close to $20,000 a night, or a few million to gamble.

Great writers with great books that I met and can recommend first hand:

Hello AOL Users! – If you use AOL, you haven’t seen us for a few months (or not at all if you’ve signed up the past few months). In AOL’s quest to block spam, they blocked the vast majority of email newsletters, across the board.

Our biggest complaint the past five months? AOL subscribers saying “I’m not getting your newsletter anymore.” Once we found this out, we applied for accepted status. They were great about getting it taken care of, and we are thrilled to see so many new and old friends again.

What is a Scinta? – Only one of the longer running acts in town now! And with good reason: This family act is a must-see. In fact, see a streaming preview for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

New Year’s Eve – From last week, many asked about what various organized events happen for New Year’s Eve. We’ll start receiving that info soon, and let you know. The “big” party is actually in the middle of The Strip, totally closed to traffic as a four mile long fireworks display goes off! We have the scoop at Las Vegas New Year’s Eve. Vegas Nights Helicopter Flight

Maverick Helicopter Vegas Strip – I recently took the opportunity to ride with Maverick Helicopters for one of their stunning night tours over The Las Vegas Strip. On board were a small group of great people from all over, two of whom were celebrating their second anniversary!

Don’t wait for a special occasion to try this out. Even though I live here, and am pretty jaded to the brightly lit strip, my jaw drops on this ride.

This isn’t like being on top of the Stratosphere, or craning your neck toward the airplane window as you fly in. The wrap-around windows of the helicopter give every rider a spectacular, unparalleled view of our beautiful Las Vegas Strip.

The ride takes you all the way: From the very bottom of The Strip (south of Mandalay Bay), past the Stratosphere, to the Fremont St. Experience experience downtown and over the light show and hotels of “Old Vegas.” You fly about 1000 feet off the ground, high enough to see everything smoothly move before your eyes but close enough to enjoy the details.

As you move past all of the brightly lit hotels and the beauty of their entire properties, the odds are you’ll catch the Mirage Volcano, Bellagio Fountains and maybe even the Fremont St. Light Show … from overhead!

Worried about heights? This isn’t a thrill ride, nor designed to be one. Maverick has a perfect safety record, the best helicopters, and most experienced (but informative and fun) pilots. Leather seats, heat and air, elbow room, and a wrap around vista make this a highlight of your trip.

Beware; some companies sell discounted Strip helicopter tours and they basically take you up in a small circle and you are done before it started. You get what you pay for, and Maverick gives you your money’s worth. Whether a first time visitor, your “once in a lifetime” Vegas trip, or you drive in every month, this should be a “must do” on your next trip.

Reserve early. This popular sightseeing flight can fill up well in advance.

Featured Story: Carrot Top, Greens of Las Vegas

Carrot Top – I finally checked out Carrot Top on the invite of his local PR staff. He’s been headlining here for years, and all I knew about him was his Jay Leno appearances and the phone commercials that seem to play non-stop. Was I ever happy to finally check him out live!

A prop comedian, Carrot Top’s stage is filled with trunks and trunks of gags. Sounds like it would get boring after five minutes? Not even. This skilled performer rarely let up, with gag after gag after gag that had the audience laughing non-stop for the entire performance. Nothing was off-limits, from politics to NASCAR to poking fun of the very hotel he was performing at.

The show is PG-13 because of a little bit of language, but nothing that will make anyone blush. And he pulls off his entire show without getting into raunchy humor, making this the perfect fun show to take your teenagers or even Grandma to. Carrot Top plays now through September 17 at the MGM Grand. Catch him this time, but if you can’t we’ll remind you before his next headlining run.

Click for Carrot Top Tickets Or Call Toll-Free (866) 828-9849 x143

Want to see who is playing during your next visit? Check out our Concert and Headliner Calendar

Greens Of Las Vegas – Want some golf, but don’t want to take up hours of your vacation time or travel miles from The Strip? We had a great time at the Greens of Las Vegas, close to The Strip and just south of the Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine a top-notch golf course minus the fairways. Hole after hole of challenging but fun putting greens outdoors in a beautiful setting. This isn’t mini-golf, but carries a couple great advantages: You can enjoy the course in about an hour, and the non-golfers in your group can still play and enjoy this experience because no fairway driving is involved.

The greens has a full pro shop, and a comfortable, upscale “19’th hole” restaurant and bar called Bogee’s. A full golf experience that doesn’t eat up your entire vacation!

Check out the Greens of Las Vegas website for more information, and a couple of great money saving coupons. With the perfect, warm fall Las Vegas weather at hand, we had a great time and you will too on your next trip!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It is great to be back in the saddle after taking a month off from publication. I survived New Year’s Eve and a move. Most people move away from The Strip to avoid the traffic, commotion, and have a “normal” life. I moved closer so we can increase our great coverage of Las Vegas tourism.

Cold Enough? – Every summer, people say “I don’t see how anybody can live in Las Vegas … this heat is crazy.” I dunno … been near 70 here since the first of the year and most of the rest of the U.S. weather map looks bone chilling. I’d suggest a quick trip to Las Vegas to thaw out. Doesn’t wearing shorts sound more fun than layering clothes!

Write Down This Number! – A great new service for readers: Many within driving distance jump in the car for a “road trip” to Vegas, not giving any thought to which hotel, or just calling the usual one and taking whatever they have. Others plan a trip to town, but haven’t booked any shows, tours, or golf before arrival.

You can go hotel to hotel looking for a room, or hunt down a show and tour booth (without really knowing who you are dealing with). Or … you can use our new telephone reservations service!

Get on your cell or room phone and call (toll free) 800-696-5721 to book all hotels, shows, tours, golf, and even dining reservations! One number does it all to save you time. Plus, you can compare rates without even getting out of the car or calling multiple hotels. Print this out now and stuff a copy in your suitcase or glove box, and another in your pocket or purse!

Special Notes: This number is only for new reservations. To change or confirm existing reservations, use the contact information given to you when you reserved. Special internet rates offered in newsletter not available on the phone.

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Super Bowl Weekend – is always huge. Most hotels have one (or more) parties where a set fee buys you admission, food, and (sometimes) booze but co’mon … this is Las Vegas. Every TV in public view at every bar, lounge, sports book, and anywhere else in the resort and tourism areas will be tuned to the game. You can’t escape it!

The Raiders are a 3.5 point favorite as I write (if you bet the Raiders, they must win by 3.5 points or more, or Buc’s bettors win instead) and there is no excitement like having a nice bet on a big game and getting that start-to-finish thrill. Room availability is still good for this weekend: Check the rates! Remember that many hotels don’t allow Saturday night arrival and the game isn’t until Sunday evening so book an extra night and call in sick so you can get home Monday.

Megabucks – is topping $28,000,000 as I write. That is a lot of zeros behind a dollar sign! You can watch the numbers rise at the IGT Megabucks site and fantasize. Be interesting to see if it hits this Super Bowl weekend.

Green Valley Ranch – earned their first AAA Four Diamond award, joining The Venetian, Mirage, Treasure Island, Golden Nugget, and Hyatt Regency Lake Las Vegas. Of note is that Green Valley Ranch is the first “local’s” casino to earn the honor. The property feels like an upscale local’s casino to visitors just going to eat, drink, gamble, etc. but to guests it is a boutique resort in the hills with a great view of the entire Las Vegas Valley and The Strip.

Clang, Clang, Clang Is Done, Done, Done – MGM Mirage is the latest gaming company to make the move to “ticket in, ticket” out machines (as opposed to the old ones that pay out actual coins). How do you feel? Do you like the “no muss, no fuss” or is part of the thrill of winning hearing the coins hit the tray? Read the full story and give us your opinion on our Slots Message Board.

Palms Unveils Bachelor Party Suites – These two suites are the ultimate playrooms for bad boys and specifically designed for private bachelor (or bachelorette) parties. These bachelor suites are located on the 28th floor of the Palms Casino Resort, adjacent to the Real World Suite. Click for full story/details.

Cirque Replacing EFX (Details) – With the long running EFX at MGM Grand gone, the hotel is scheduled to open a new Cirque du Soleil production in 2004 that will shake the spectator’s perception of space, conception of the law of gravity and comprehension of the world in three dimensions. Click for full story.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, showstours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Featured Review: New Year’s Eve Review and Photos

Oh what a night! New Year’s Eve never fails to be a wild ride here in Las Vegas. With the entire Las Vegas Strip closed down, it turned into a massive pedestrian mall for the midnight fireworks.I was fortunate to attend with a couple of first-timers. They couldn’t get over what an amazing celebration it was. Ironically, this was one of the most tame I had experienced, partly due to January 1 falling on a midweek (many visitors needing to check out and leave the next morning).

Tame didn’t mean lame, though. An estimated 250,000+ were relishing in this unique experience, walking right down the middle of one of the world’s most famous streets, drink in hand, smiles on every face.

Something cool comes over people when they visit Las Vegas. You can see it and sense it, and the New Year’s revelers were definitely feeling it. You put 1/4 million people together and add booze in almost any other situation or city and you are asking for trouble. But police reported few problems and a very low arrest rate. The Vegas vibe kicks in and people just want to have fun!

On another note, Las Vegas is finally earning the “sin city” reputation and catching up with New Orleans, Key West, and other places where women trade a “look at these” for beads.

As always, we were in the heart of the action filming. You can click on any of the photos on the right, or view our specific photo categories below.

As usual, no fee or registration. View them and use our “Send As Postcard” feature to share with friends!

Streaming video and fireworks photos coming in a few weeks.

Featured Review: Bellagio Conservatory Christmas Photos

The Bellagio has been famous since opening for the beautiful conservatory, which features thousands of live plants arranged in a stunning and every changing display for each season.

Christmas is no different! The current display brings the warmth and good cheer of the season to life with light and vivid colors. The theme includes oversized tree ornaments in red, gold, and silver both hanging overhead and around the conservatory surrounding a huge decorated and lit tree.

For those visiting in the next couple of weeks (another great excuse to do New Year’s Eve here), make sure to stop in and enjoy this. For those who won’t be with us the next couple of weeks, you can enjoy this slice of Christmas in Las Vegas in our Bellagio Christmas Photo Gallery. (View all four pages for different scenes).

Send As Online Postcard – Forgot to spread some holiday cheer? Did you keep a limited Christmas card list because of the price of postage? Are you just bored waiting for the workday to end and Christmas Eve to settle in?

Email our Bellagio Christmas photos as online postcards to family, friends, coworkers, or a quick hello to everyone in your address book.

All of the photos in our photo galleries can be sent as online postcards, including the Bellagio Christmas photos above. Simply click on the photos to see a full size version. When that page opens, click the Send As Postcard link at the bottom of any photo. No charge, no registration. Enjoy!

PS: Guys … your girlfriend or wife will love one of these photos sent as a romantic “thinking of you” but don’t leave you buddies out. Send them online postcards they will appreciate: Mermaids from Palms Skin Lounge (from last summer), Crazy Girls showgirls, or the go-go dancers at Tequila Joe’s!

Featured Tour: Good Springs Valley Ghost Mines SUV Adventure

We drive to the top of a mountain where the view is spectacular. This is one of 11 photo stops!

You forgot to tell me where to send that $100 I promised (for the good report)! Seriously, we thank you and everyone else for reading and are happy to help you make the most of your valuable vacation time. Thanks to all for visiting Las Vegas!

I find most hotels on the Las Vegas are way too expensive now, considering most people put a lot of money in those machines slots, poker, etc. which rarely pays, and also the restaurants, & buffet are more expensive than before, so we have decided to go somewhere else and found downtown (Fremont St.) has a lot to offer and we win more often there and leave with more money in our pockets than on the strip.

Manyáare writing me and saying how they are rediscovering downtown and the Fremont St. Experience (Fremont St. Experience photos). Generally speaking, the rooms are less expensive, the food cheaper, the drinks stronger, and almost all the casinos are along the four blocks of Fremont St. so you don’t wear your shoes out casino hopping.

You can enjoy fine dining with a great view at The Plaza’s Center Stage Restaurant or go nuts with the Golden Gate’s 99 cent shrimp cocktail (no lettuce filler). Plus, it seems like there are always drink specials somewhere down there. We love downtown!

Hi Ted, Just got back and didn’t know if you realized that since the Imperial Palace owner passed away last week, all the cars in his collection are for sale (and priced reasonably too) as well as the largest Wurlitzer collection ever. (these can be purchased individually or the group for a half a million. It didn’t take long for the family to start unloading the merchandise.) Thought your car buffs and readers might appreciate this info.

Our sympathies to out to the family and friends of Imperial Palace owner Ralph Engelstad, a controversial figure known for his tough exterior but soft heart. We reviewed the Imperial Palace Auto Collection a couple of years ago. This is truly a time for “changing of the guard” as Plaza Hotel owner Jackie Gaughn is selling the Plaza, Las Vegas Club, and Gold spike to an investment group which figures to bring new life (and capital) into these downtown properties.

As “snowbirds,” my wife and I winter in Las Vegas. It’s not quite as cold as Wisconsin. Last winter, while surfing the internet on my laptop, I can across a mention of the $4.95 steak dinner special at Ellis Island. We decided to try it, and were very pleased with the results.

You have to ask for it, as it is not on the menu. You start out with a LARGE salad. Everything is fresh and crisp. Rolls and butter are brought out, and, by the time you finish the salad, the steaks are ready. My wife, having worked in restaurants all her life, was a little apprehensive about the steaks, because at other places we’ve been to the steaks were either a little over or under done.

These steaks were perfect-just the way we ordered them. The steak was (is) about 1-1/2 inches thick, and tasted great. Along side was a large baked potato, and green beans sprinkled with minced garlic. A beverage is also included. We have returned for dinner several times since, and have always had a “perfect” meal. Whenever anyone visits from back home (Milwaukee) we always take them there at least once.

Try it, you’ll like it.

This is one of the great Las Vegas specials, and I enjoy it myself. A reader on our message boards asked about this special, and we thank Dave for his answer with a great mini-review. Ellis Island is located just off The Strip. Take Flamingo east to Koval (1/2 mile) and make a right. You can’t miss it on the left. If you have had this great special or just want to know more, visit our Cheap Food Deals forum and don’t forget about our updated Las Vegas Food Deals page.

Craps is my favorite game. In fact, I could play it 24 hours a day if the money holds out. It is fast moving, never boring. If I play using some common sense, I can usually make my money last, I even have left a winner–something I rarely do with the slots. My favorite game is quarter craps where you can bet in increments of quarters instead of dollars. Don’t get me wrong, I still put my money on the table, I can just spread it out more.

Vern went on to ask where to find the lower limit craps games and talked about his betting strategies. If you love craps, want to read the rest of Vern’s post, or are just curious about this incredibly fun, social casino game, check out our new Craps Forum.

In Oct on my vacation to LV , decided on a road trip. This year it was Pahrump. I have to say I really enjoyed it, kinda like a mini LV. People were VERY friendly and enjoyed the road trip a lot. Terribles has a GREAT coffee shop. What do you ALL think?????Pahrump is a small town about an hour west of Las Vegas, best known as the home of late night radio’s Art Bell and a number of brothels. If you have been to Pahrump, share the dirt in our Southern Nevada forum. This is also a great place to talk about other little “out of the way” places here in the Silver State.

Hello my name is Terri. I have lived in Las Vegas for 33 years and I wouldn’t live anywhere else in America. I was born raised and educated in England. My intentions when I came to America in 1967 was to stay a year or so traveling around this great country, however, after starting off in NJ then NY, SF, Lake Tahoe, I found myself in the unique city of Las Vegas.I became a cocktail waitress at the Big Hilton on Paradise rd. in 1969. Before I knew it I married, had a good money making job, and had fallen in love with Lady Vegas. I no longer serve cocktails, I am self-employed and very content with my life here, everything I need is at my fingertips 24/7.

IMHO only the strong will survive here, like do not gamble if you live in our fair city, it will creep up behind you and BITE you real hard. Of course, if visiting here it is a ton of fun to gamble, especially if you win.

What a great story! We appreciate both the locals and tourist who are relating experiences (both good and bad) about various aspects of Las Vegas on our message boards. Feel free to enjoy reading or jump right into our Living Here, Moving Here Forum.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Thanksgiving (U.S.) is upon us and I am delighted to have my family in town but if you can’t be with family, Las Vegas is a great place to be. Cooler fall weather is here, but the action continues to be hot indoors.

Almost every hotel shows the rodeo on the big screens and has bourbon and Coors Light specials. We’ll be out at various events filming and photographing for everyone who can’t make it. More next week.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! My apologies for the weather over the weekend. Last week I talked about the 85 (F) and sunny we had for most of October. Wouldn’t you know it — the very next day highs plummeted to the low 70’s and it rained overnight both weekend nights (although pleasant during the day). Today is a chilly 72 so I guess fall will be banging on the door in a few more weeks.

Someone wrote a recent letter to the editor of the Review-Journal (our morning paper) criticizing Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman’s endorsement of Bombay Sapphire gin. The $100,000 endorsement fee is going to charity.á The writer noted that he moved to Las Vegas from the east coast 10 years ago. I’m hoping he leaves soon. If you are thinking about moving to Las Vegas, move to Las Vegas. Accept Las Vegas. If the way we do things here isn’t your cup of tea, please move elsewhere!

Restaurant Review: Alize

Top of the Palms Casino Resort
By Chef John Guinivere – ChefLive.Com

Well folksà I now have a new favorite restaurant here in Las Vegas and I can gladly recommend it. This new restaurant is a chefÆs dream! It sits on the top of a beautiful hotel and has one of the best views in the entire city. The dining room has very high ceilings, which lets in even more for the eyes to see. The interior, from tables, chairs and carpet are all wonderful together. They could serve burgers and beer and you would thoroughly enjoy your visit. But they donÆt server burgers; they serve some of the best food in town!

Man O’ War – The Man O’ War course was the first built at Stallion Mountain and was a host course in 1991 for the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas Invitational. Recently, Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley redesigned it, creating a distinctive layout with undulating greens guarded by bunkering.

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! You guys are amazing. I really appreciate the great response last newsletter with suggestions for helpful information to be added to our site. We are working night and day to get this information up. Some of it is basic, like a gambling primer. Other sections will delve deep into our experiences from spending the past decade living in Las Vegas and frequenting the resort corridor to give you inside information you can use.

The incredible thing about Las Vegas is that we get well over 30 million visitors a year, and no two people have exactly the same experience. You may be a first time visitor, or you may be a regular who just wants to try something new and we’ll walk you through it all!

Finally, we have aligned ourselves with High Logic web hosting. Las Vegas based High Logic is truly the company you need to look at for web hosting, marketing, and more. The price is right and the service is great whether you are a very small outfit or a network of high traffic sites like ours. In addition, their easy-to-use control panel gives you (or your webmaster) simple and instant access to your hosting. Plus, they have a great spam and virus blocker. Our unwanted email decreased almost immediately! Check them out at HighLogic.com

BELLAGIO VS. LE REVE – Now that Steve Wynn (creator of Mirage, Treasure Island, and Bellagio) has announced his ambitious $1.85 billion dollar Le Reve hotel project to sit on the site of the shuttered Desert Inn, Bellagio (which he no longer has anything to do with) has announced a $375 million expansion to add new rooms, more spa, salon, meeting, dining and retail space. The completion date? End of 2004, just before Mr. Wynn expects to complete Le Reve.

So what is the story here? I personally know a number of Mirage/Bellagio players who have had nothing good to say about playing there since Steve Wynn left. We are talking the kind of person who comes prepared to lose thousands and thousands and doesn’t exactly play the nickel machines. They are pissed and counting the days until Le Reve opens. Be interesting to watch this hotel war heat up!

BEST SCENIC ATTRACTION – Last month you voted (or should have!) at AccessVegas.com for the best scenic attraction in the Las Vegas area. Hoover Dam won with 33% of the vote. Runners up were The Grand Canyon (27%), and Red Rock Canyon (20%). Also receiving votes were Valley of Fire, Oatman/Route 66, and Lake Mead. You can take a 1/2 day or full day tour from Las Vegas and enjoy the rugged, breathtaking scenery of the “wild west.” Tour details for all tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours

NEW YEAR’S EVE – If you have not done New Year’s in Las Vegas, you just haven’t done New Year’s Eve. If you are even thinking about it, book now because rooms are already filling up. Unfamiliar with Las Vegas New Year’s Eve or just want to show your friends what they missed last year? Check out our New Year’s Eve site with photos, free steaming video, hotel tips, party tips, parking secrets and just about everything else you’d want to see or know. No watered down second hand info here: Every year we are down on The Strip, enjoying it with you!

RESTAURANT REVIEW – Chef John says about Coffee Pub: “The Coffee Pub over time became the place to be seen and the place to see others. Besides the hundreds of daily regulars, celebrities love to hang out there as well.” Read his full review with photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/coffee-pub.htm

TONY AND TINA’S Wedding – We’ve been hearing some great things about this show, the second longest running off-Broadway show in history. You actually “attend” an authentic Italian-American Catholic wedding including the nuptials, fully-catered Italian buffet dinner, and the reception with live music. Except the wedding isn’t real, it is just really funny! More details and ticket info at Tony & Tina

MORE NIGHTCLUBS – Ortanique Restaurant in Paris Las Vegas has opened the “Ovation” Nightclub Fridays and Saturdays from 12:30 AM to 6 AM. They feature house DJs playing music from the ’80s, ’90s and today. The nightclub scene in town is getting to be staggering, with so many hotels getting into the act. The scene is so swamped that we have put off developing an expanded nightlife section until it all shakes out.

ATTENTION LOCALS – Speaking of nightclubs and nightlife, we have acquired the domain name “partyvegas.com” (don’t bother … nothing there yet). If you or someone you know is a twenty-something (at least at heart) who enjoys hitting the clubs and lounges on a regular basis and an OK or better writer, we want you. The pay is lousy but the perks are great. Email us at mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

FREE TOURS – of Caesars Magical Empire take place Tuesday-Friday every half hour from 11 AM – 3:30 PM. Tour participants receive a $10 discount coupon for early seating at dinner shows. This is worth checking out just to see the lavish, medieval settting that is the Magical Empire. Read our review of the complete dinner and show at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm

BIKEFEST — The 2’nd Annual Las Vegas BikeFest will be held September 12-15, 2002 in Downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience. Over 6,000 bikers and enthusiasts attended the inaugural event in September 2001. The event will consist of the Vendor Village with over 100 manufacturers, free entertainment, and activities such as a Freedom Rally on the Fremont Street Experience in memorial of the 9/11 tragedy, custom bike show, Miss Las Vegas BikeFest competition, two poker runs, Mr. Las Vegas BikeFest competition, tattoo contest, charity chili cook-off, Motorcyclympics, wet t-shirt contest, and more. Some events require registration. More info at BikeFest

ALL THE FOOTBALL – The Imperial Palace is one of the few hotels showing every single NFL game every Sunday for free. Because of licensing fees and restrictions, many hotels choose not the buy the NFL Sunday Package. In their defense, the NFL wants to charge them based on occupancy of the entire casino area, not just the sports book or bars! The Imperial Palace got around this by showing the games in the showroom of the casino.

800 free, comfortable seats are available. Food and drink specials are served, the Miller Girls are often on hand, and their sports book is just around the corner. This is probably your best bet to catch your favorite team play if the game isn’t broadcast in the Las Vegas area on local TV.

BLOW ME UP TOM – Radio talk show host Tom Leykis is bringing his nationwide (100-plus stations) broadcast to the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s this Friday from 3-7 PM Pacific time. His infamous “listener parties” are the stuff of legend. The event is free and open to the public. Locally, the show can be heard on 1140 AM from 3-7 PM live and repeated Midnight – 6 AM. If he broadcasts in your city (check both the AM and FM talk stations between 3-7 PM Pacific), you can hear the mayhem yourself.

AFAN BENEFIT – The Generic Black & White Party XVI, a fundraiser for Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) that benefits individuals and families living with HIV and AIDS, will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 PM at the outdoor nightclub SKIN in the Palms Casino Resort. A ticket to the event also includes admission to the pre-party at Ghost Bar at the top of the Palms from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the after-party entitled “The Lucille Ball” starting at 10 p.m. and the chance to see Grammy-nominated pop star Taylor Dayne performing such hits as “Tell It To My Heart,” “I’ll Be Your Shelter,” and “Every Beat of My Heart.”

Event tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased in advance by visiting http://www.insideafan.org or in person at Stuff inside the Palms Casino Resort. Tickets also go on sale the night of the event at 7 p.m. at the door. Additionally, guests can obtain a ticket by donating $40 worth of nonperishable food or toiletries. All food and toiletry items must be dropped off at the Official Generic Black & White Party XVI truck prior to entering the Palms Casino Resort.

SUBSCRIPTION “DUES” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows, and tours through AccessVegas.com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by forwarding a copy to them and suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

FEEDBACK:

M. Smithson of the Canary Isles wrote,

I know that we will never forget September 11’th but it just occurred to me, I know that you still fly, and encourage everyone to do so, but I visit Vegas and America every two years, would like it to be every two months, what I would like to say to the people of America is, don’t let them win. Keep your Airlines flying, so much heroism so much bravery, and to mention the last words of the guys on flight 93 LETS ROLL, so America lets roll, go enjoy all your wonderful resorts don’t let all those brave people down fly enjoy.

Thanks for the encouraging words! We were out both Friday and Sunday nights over the usually busy Labor Day weekend (last weekend was a three day American holiday weekend) and while always busy, The Strip seemed to resemble just another weekend, and not the throngs usually seen for a holiday. We’ve also seen soft booking numbers the past couple of weeks (people planing future trips).

I think people are concerned and reflective right now and will be for the next week. As noted, I’ll be flying on September 11 this year. No, not because I got a cheap deal, but to enjoy time with my out-of-state family for a few days. Of course, I’m also getting more pleasure out of flying than ever. It is my smack in the face to those who thought their actions were going to change our way of life. Not mine you won’t!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Yes, we are a week late. I’d like to tell I was playing hooky and enjoying the sunny 85 degree days but alas, the only tan I got was from fluorescent lighting as we continue to expand and upgrade our content. We started our “Best Of” poll (which will feature a new category every month for the next year), made All Vegas TV accessible to more users of various computers, and put up our brand new “New Year’s Eve” section.

We’ll talk about all that in a minute but I want to welcome Rick “Zig” Ziegler to the staff. Coming to us from Connecticut via Arizona, he’s already up to speed on the summer heat we’ll soon see, and he loves the tourism side of Las Vegas. He’ll be playing a major “behind the scenes” roll in adding and expanding our content.

BEST OF – It seems like every publication in town has their own “Best Of Las Vegas” poll. Some are legit but locals vote and most locals never go near The Strip. Others may anoint their better advertisers as the “best.” We are going to do it a little differently! Every month on the main page of http://www.accessvegas.com we’ll have a new question for newsletter readers and site visitors can vote on! You are the visitors — your voice should count!

We have put in a double redundant system to keep people from “stuffing the ballot box.” I get one vote, just like anyone else. You can always click on the “Results” link and see how the voting is going for yourself at any time. This month’s question is “What is the best luxury hotel in Las Vegas?” Go vote now at http://www.accessvegas.com !

TOURS AND MORE TOURS – Our expanded tours section is up. We have far more tours than ever before, plus great photos and specific tour details. Whether it is a quick visit to Hoover Dam or an all day adventure by Hummer, ATV, or even horses we have you covered. Plus, we aren’t going to screw with you. Many companies quote a crazy low price, then tack on the taxes, fees, and surcharges when you show up. The price we quote and let you book online is the complete price you pay. Check out all the great tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours and really see the beauty beyond The Strip!

ST. TROPEZ SUITES – I usually don’t mention hotel deals here, but this one is so good I might take a couple of days off and take advantage of it. We are offering this resort suite hotel from $59 a night. Where is it? How about right across the street from the Hard Rock, one of the hottest casinos/dining/drinking in town! You are 1.5 miles from The Strip, but with the money you save you can rent some wheels, grab a cab, or just take the Hard Rock’s free shuttle to The Strip (open to everyone). I’d look into this one now, before someone over there at the St. Tropez sobers up and yanks this great deal! Click http://www.accessvegas.com — the special is at the top of the page.

GREAT HAPPY HOUR – What will $1.95 buy you in Vegas?

* Half Pound Cheeseburger and Fries
* Onion Rings
* Jalepeno Poppers
* Buffalo Wings
* Fried Clam Strips
* Pork Eggrolls
* Beef Taquitos
* Fried Calamari
* Roma Tomato and Garlic Bruschetta

Where? McCormick and Schmick’s just east of The Strip on Flamingo at Restaurant Row (set back kitty-corner from Terrible’s Hotel). This place is becoming the unofficial hangout for AccessVegas.Com and ChefLive.Com crew and at those prices we don’t even bother to bargain for discounts. Specials are subject to change, run Monday – Friday; 3:30 – 6:30 PM and again later from 9:30 – 11 PM (close). No take out, $2 min. beverage purchase. (702) 836-9000

AIRPORT WINNERS – Two McCarran (Las Vegas) Airport passengers went home happy in the past month. While declining to release their names to media, each of these winners hit $1,000,000-plus jackpots waiting for their flights! On May 9, a Chicago bound passenger in Terminal 2 whacked “Wheel of Fortune” for $1.3 million and change. Twelve days earlier on April 27, another passenger took a “Wheel of Fortune” machine in Terminal one for $1.6 million and change. I’m guessing they both had no problem upgrading to first class with that kind of fresh loot.

NEW YEAR’S EVE – The biggest party night of the year is Las Vegas’ biggest night and now we over 100 photos plus streaming video highlights online in one spot. This includes new photos from this past year including the fireworks! In keeping with our “give you the scoop” attitude, we also give you the complete lowdown on just about everything you need to know to enjoy this huge event. Go enjoy our new site section at http://www.las-vegas-new-years-eve.com

FREE MAGIC – World-class close-up magician Michael Close has returned to the Houdini Lounge inside the Monte Carlo. A local favorite, he has drawn raves from Lance Burton, Penn and Teller, Mac King, and more. He performs each Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 PM until 1 AM. Houdini Lounge has always been a great place to relax and regain your sanity and this added bonus is worth seeing. No cover charge, must be 21.

UH-OH – I goofed last time. Larry G. Jones’ plays Thursday – Monday at 5 PM with his free show at Fitzgerald’s downtown. More on Larry “The Man of 1002 Voices” Jones at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/larry-jones-las-vegas-shows.htm

THE VIEW – No, not the female dominated TV show. This is the name of the new nightclub at Harrah’s. Thursday through Saturday night, Harrah’s Range Steakhouse is transformed into a nightclub with a DJ spinning music from the 70’s to now, dancing girls, and an appetizer menu. Not to mention the great view the venue affords, looking directly over the center of The Strip. Doors open at midnight. Guys are $10 and ladies are free. Proper dress required.

THE AMAZING KRESKIN – is playing Silverton Hotel and Casino now through June 9. Show runs Thursday – Sunday and tickets are $13 – 16. The Silverton is about 5 minutes south of the bottom of The Strip just down the freeway. Reservations and more info at (702) 263-7777

SCOTT AND JENNY – A big high-five to our magical friends Scott and Jenny Alexander who just inked a nice long-term deal to perform at Caesars Magical Empire (reviewed at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm ). This is a great show, and their permanent addition is icing on the cake as they are topnotch magicians. Jenny’s site is at http://www.jennyalexander.com

NEONOPOLIS – opened downtown over the weekend. Kind of. The theaters and food court plus a handful of retail shops have opened. The full slate of shops and galleries aren’t scheduled to all be open until fall. We are finally getting a Jillian’s at Neonopolis, which is good news for locals and visitors that like to have fun. Words don’t describe Jillian’s. Just go look at their site http://www.jillians.com

ALL VEGAS TV – We want everyone to be able to enjoy our streaming online videos of Las Vegas. However, with the various computers, browsers, and operating systems in use some were shut out. We now have alternate links for all of our videos at http://tv.accessvegas.com — if it didn’t work before, try the new alternate link on each video page.

WINNER! Carol Waller of McLoud, OK was the winner of our McCormick and Schmick’s $50.00 gift certificate in our All Vegas TV contest a couple months ago.
