Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! Where has the time gone? It’s been a month since I last wrote and I’ve missed everyone! However, we’ve literally tripled the amount of information we add to AccessVegas.com so stop by every few days and check out the What’s New section of our front page.

We are working on a beautiful, upgraded design for AccessVegas.com as well as upgrading behind the scenes to bring you a lot more streaming Las Vegas video.

We are also very close to splitting the newsletter up (as promised): A new 4-5 times a week update for avid Vegas fanatics, and back to our weekly version for those looking for more basic, helpful vacation planning.

Lost of giveaways ready to go when we get the bugs out of our contest software. We had to stop running giveaways for a while because we have so many readers, we could no longer process entries by hand. Plus lots more cool stuff I don’t even want to get into yet …

The Weather Is Here – If you watched the NASCAR race form Las Vegas, you saw how perfect the weather is this time of year. Highs around 80 with very comfortable temperatures throughout the late evening. Spring and fall are prime time in Las Vegas so click to check room rates now.

Celine Dion Tickets Available – Tickets for her June shows are available, but going very, very quickly. Check out our June Headliners and Concert Calendar for details. Speaking of …

Entertainment Capital of the World – Las Vegas continues to live up to this billing. Our Headliners and Concert Calendar is jammed with entertainment. Check it out!

101 Las Vegas Top 10 Lists – Las Vegas Review-Journal gossip columnist Norm! (Clarke) is getting ready to put out this interesting book. This is the man who was first to break stories like Britney Spear’s Las Vegas wedding.

I had the pleasure of addressing a group of business leaders recently, and Norm was among them. Had a nice chat with him afterwards and we’ll be looking forward to his book. We have a number of other Las Vegas and gaming related books we read to pass time during our unusually cold winter here (it actually snowed twice, although brief), and we’ll be reviewing those soon as well.

Binion’s – After numerous legal hurdles and every monkey wrench imaginable, Binion’s Horseshoe downtown will be re-opening soon. But will it be like the old Binion’s we all knew and loved? We’ll let you know.

Roy Horn Update – Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is up around walking a bit with the assistance of a wheeled walking aid, according to multiple sources. We wish him well in his continuing recovery. There is word of a Siegfried and Roy worldwide TV special down the road as his recovery progresses.

Happy Birthday Lance – What do Osama Bin Laden, James Earl Ray, Prince Edward, Chuck Norris and Sharon Stone all have in common? They share a birthday with Las Vegas’ own Master Magician Lance Burton who just celebrated his 44’th birthday March 10. Next issue, we provide you an updated review of Lance’s great show! lance burton master magician magic

We Will Rock YouParis Las Vegas appears ready to bring this production to Las Vegas on the heels of the very successful run of Mamma Mia! at Mandalay Bay. More details as they become available.

Valley Air Express – new air service now allows you to “fly” up I-15 between Las Vegas and Victorville, CA. Because they are a “charter” type airline and fly into Henderson Executive Airport (about 15 minutes from The Strip), you avoid the delays of security, plus the long drive through the desert. We’ll try to scam a ride soon to tell you more, as they look to expand into serving Riverside as well. Check them out online.

See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The national news has been chasing Michael Jackson all over town. Never a dull moment here.

Got a couple of great feedback emails this week:

Myron Shulman had me laughing with this one (regarding Treasure Island now calling itself TI): I also heard rumors that MGM/Mirage plans to re-do the Mirage motif. All references to the south seas, as well as tigers, will be removed. What will they do with the tigers? They will need to come-up with a new name, too. They probably will call it “MI” as it’s next to “TI”. They can call the area “Mi-Ti“.

Frank Coccho wrote: Your newsletter is the best….very helpful and informative; packed with ideas, hints, etc. Keep up the great work!!!!

We appreciate the feedback and suggestions you send to allvegastv@aol.com and if you have Vegas questions or comments, please post them to our Vegas Travel Boards.

Cabbie Savvy – Many senior visitors gripe about Vegas taxis. Some cabbies use the long way from the airport to Strip hotels. They take the airport tunnel to I-15, and 20 long minutes later arrive at the hotel. The cabbies may tell you it avoids heavy street traffic, but instead of a $10 fare through non-highway streets, the cost can be $20+.So, when you hop a taxi at the airport, just say, “Hey, don’t use the tunnel”. Also be aware that the extra fee added to your bill is for leaving the airport into Vegas. Don’t be charged an extra fee for returning to the airport for departure.

Vegas cabbies don’t look forward to later this year. New links in the city’s monorail system will connect MGM to many hotels four miles along the Strip to the Sahara. As if taxi guys don’t have enough to worry about, there’s talk of extending the monorail to the airport.

Remember When – Dick Smothers recalls his first Las Vegas job with brother Tom…would you believe…40 years ago! Then in their early 20s, and having only performed for high school and college audiences, the Smothers Brothers weren’t sure their material was sophisticated enough for Las Vegas. They were the opening act for star Juliet Prowse at the Flamingo, and were an instant hit. To this day, after decades of award-winning TV and live performance success, they’ve never had to change their off-the-wall concepts of comedy and music.

Dick says knew he had become a star when Frank Sinatra introduced him to the audience during Frank’s performance at Caesar’s Palace. The Smothers Brothers, popular as ever, star at the Las Vegas Hilton May 6 through June 1, August 26 through September 14, and October 28 through November 16. Click for tickets or call toll free 800-696-5721.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! It has been a busy week, seeing David Copperfield, Frank Sinatra, Jr., a Sunday trip out to Hoover Dam and Monday Night Football at the Hard Rock. Sinatra was fantastic, our Copperfield and Hard Rock football reviews are in this issue.

The weather has been stunning with highs in the mid-80’s and cool evenings that don’t get cold. I put the Rams/Raiders game on the car radio (my Raiders finally suffered a loss), put on the sun glasses, put down the car windows, and headed out to Hoover Dam on Sunday. Although a security checkpoint for cars, they wave most people through and the lack of truck traffic has made it easier and quicker to get to the dam. We’ll have that story soon.

We’ll be mentioning the Las Vegas Calendars for charity every couple of weeks until the end of the year. No excuses — these quality big photo calendars are only $5 including shipping with proceeds going to a great cause. We will not rest until every reader gets one!

Las Vegas News: Of Interest To Tourists

Hard Rock Football – The Joint at the Hard Rock was truly rocking this past Monday night for the Seahawks/49’ers game! Outside of the various parties held at local strip clubs, this is possibly the sexiest Monday Night Football (MNF) party in town. This is probably also your cheapest chance to check out the venue that has hosted The Stones, The Who, The Eagles and a laundry list of classic and modern rock shows.

Admission is free, and three huge screens show the game with the Michaels/Madden commentary and sound played over the concert quality sound system. Music is played during the commercials with scantily clad go-go girls dancing throughout the venue. Appetizers are available ($3-6) along with $1.50 Bud or Bud Light drafts to wash them down.

The event is always sponsored by a local radio station and not only draws plenty of locals, but a surprising number of women for a MNF event. While the Hard Rock is the place to see and be seen, this is serious football with plenty of loud cheering for both sides. Remember that MNF starts at 6 PM Pacific Time.

Club Rubber Halloween Costume Ball – Club Rubber and the N9NE Group presents a wicked party for the over 21 crowd. Costumes are mandatory.

  • Where: Rain in the Desert at the Palms
  • When: Oct. 31 at 9 p.m.
  • How Much: $25 (Women) $30 (Men)

Halloween Bingo Bash – Palms Casino Resort will host a special Halloween Bingo Bash on October 31 including cash giveaways.

Calendar For Charity – Now is the time to get a 2003 Las Vegas calendar and help a good cause. These are the same high quality Las Vegas calendars you find in hotels and gift shops at or below the gift shop price with all proceeds going to charity. See the beautiful photos and purchase info atá 2003 Las Vegas Calendar.

Screamers Haunted House – is in the fourth year in operation. Designed and built by some of Las Vegas’ top scenic designers and illusion builders for the big shows here in town. Click for details on this fun magic-based fright experience!

Best Magic Show – You still have time to vote for your favorite Las Vegas magician in our “Best Of’ poll. Simply head to the main page of AccessVegas.Com and vote. For those wondering the ommission of a deserving David Copperfield (who spends about half the year playing Las Vegas), this time around we only included magicians who regularly headline their own show here year around.

Sexiest Ladies Night – in Las Vegas is advertised at Wednesday nights at Venus at The Venetian. Ladies drink from 11 PM -1 AM. Click for more details.

Showroom Cancer Survivor – Our friend Larry G. Jones with the great free show at Fitzgerald’s recently got a nice write-up in the local paper regarding his show and earlier battle with cancer.

Subscription “Dues” – This newsletter is absolutely free! We enjoy bringing you great Las Vegas information. If you enjoy our newsletter, we ask two small things: Consider booking your hotels, shows,á tours, and golf through AccessVegas.Com or the links in this newsletter. We have great rates and fantastic selection in every category. Also, turn your friends on to Las Vegas by suggesting they subscribe. They’ll thank you and we thank you.

Show Review: David Copperfield – Portal

Note: David Copperfield just finished a brief run at the MGM but returns at the end of the month to play Oct 31. – Nov. 6 and again Dec. 24 – Jan. 1. Due to the popularity of this show and high ticket demand, you may wish to reserve your seats as far in advance as possible.

I’d like to call David Copperfield a living legend. If you are old enough to gamble you have seen him do everything from walk through the Great Wall of China to make the Statue of Liberty vanish on his famous television specials. However, I won’t. “Living Legend” sometimes connotes a a respected performer, past their prime, churning it out for the buck. Mr. Copperfield is still very much at the top of his game.

He’s either a great actor or still loves what he is doing (probably a bit of both) because from the minute he hits the stage, he’s having fun and that makes you want to like him. He could be a nobody just starting out and you would like him. But he gets right into it with an illusion that has him floating upwards through a plate of steel.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

TERRIBLE’S HOTEL CASINO – This hotel which sits on the site of the old Continental Hotel at Paradise and Flamingo (about a mile from the Strip) is worth checking out if you drive to town or rent a car. The casino is very nice with a roomy sports book (for a smaller property) and both the buffet and coffee shop are located upstairs away from the casino noise. Plus, a number of food specials (posted both outside and throughout the casino) are available 24/7 in the coffee shop.

The big news? They are using coinless slots that let you take the paper voucher you receive when you cash out and insert it in another machine for play. My early complaint about coinless slots is that you had to go redeem the voucher every time you switched machines but that is a moot point here. Story on these latest coinless slots at http://www.bergen.com/region/slots2720010127.htm

FILM AND PRINT – If it seems like you can’t turn on the TV or check out the movie listings without seeing Las Vegas, you are right. Production companies are flocking here to shoot commercials and launch products, and rarely a week goes by without work on a major motion picture. LOW PAY – Las Vegas placed 82nd out of 125 metropolitan cities in a recent study of which cities are the best places to make and save money. Despite the growth, we ranked low in job quality, education, wealth, household income and housing costs. Despite low unemployment, many blue collar jobs don’t pay the big bucks and professionals can expect to start out at a lower rate of pay than the national average. ART AND ARCHITECTURE – The Smithsonian is sponsoring trips to Las Vegas to explore an oft-ignored side of Las Vegas. No one is pretending that Las Vegas is a Mecca of culture, but there are a surprising number of things to see for the highbrow visitor. CRAPS LESSONS – A LA Times writer wrote a fun piece about his recent trip to Vegas, including what it was like to participate in one of those free casino gaming lessons. Story at http://www.latimes.com/travel/vegas/lat_vegas010204.htm

ROMP THROUGH DOWNTOWN – The Review-Journal just published an interesting article with photos about the Fremont St. Experience (better known to some as “downtown” or “Glitter Gulch”). They put together a simple walking tour of the casinos including interesting highlights to check out. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Feb-04-Sun-2001/living/14746442.html

XFL and WWF – owner / promoter Vince McMahon seems to have a love affair with Las Vegas. The debut XFL game last Sat. night was broadcast live from Las Vegas, drawing 17% of all viewing households (about twice what they expected and more than the much touted NBA double-header the same day.) In addition, the WWF Feb. 25’th Pay-Per-View “No Way Out” will be broadcast from Las Vegas (4:45 PM Pacific).

The XFL was a big hit in the sports books as well, drawing much more wagering than expected. Las Vegas has embraced the team in a large way, but part of that is our way of lashing back at the NFL and NBA. Despite having a metro area population larger than Indianapolis, Orlando, or New Orleans, the leagues frown at owners even thinking about moving here (or awarding an expansion franchise) because of the legal sports betting.

Whether the XFL turns into a hit nationwide remains to be seen. We will report on the XFL when it brings Las Vegas to the spotlight as it did this last weekend, but not regularly.

FEATURE STORY: David Copperfield

by Sarah Swain

When you are going to see the show of the most famous illusionist
since Houdini, expectations are bound to be high, but I must confess that
David Copperfield lived up to my every hope.

From the moment he appears on stage (from nowhere of course), till he
takes his final bow, the entire audience is on the edge of its seats.

The tour, titled Unknown Dimension is designed to allow the audience
to be involved — so watch out because there’s a good chance you might
be picked like I was!

So what did he do to me? Make me disappear? Levitate me? No, he
changed the colour of my pants.

In the cheekiest trick of the whole show, the man who vanished the
Statue of Liberty, levitated across the Grand Canyon, and walked
through the Great Wall of China, swapped the colour of my underwear
with another girl, in a trick which included his classy joke; Should
I do it the hard way … or the easy way. The hard? OK, I’ll take her
out to dinner first. Great.

You could be lucky though. Two members of the crowd were levitated
whilst sitting on a huge red sofa, others had a tissue changed into a
mouse in their hands. This is nothing though, compared with the
finale acts. One sees him picking thirteen members of the audience at
random, and making them disappear (some of them, apparently appear
miles, away, though I’m not sure if that’s all hype), and in the
other, he transports someone anywhere they want to be.

Tonight, he invites on to the stage a teenage boy, who, we are told,
has always wanted to go to Bali. And, believe it or not (literally),
he takes him there. A video screen appears. We see a beach, the sea,
and cameras and crew. A clock shows the time and Bali live is in
the corner.

Yeah, yeah, you’re thinking. That’s ridiculous. The piece in Bali is
all prerecorded. They went and filmed it. We thought the same.
Until he began throwing silver balls in to the audience, with his back
turned. If you caught one you had to go on the stage. He lines the
people up, and takes a Polaroid of them, which he gets one of them to
date and sign. Next, we gets one of then to think of two random
letters, and write them on his arm.

He puts the Polaroid in the boy’s pocket, and leads him to sit on a
throne-like chair. It is on an arm, which moves off the stage, and
suspends over the audience. He throws a silver sheet over them.
Flash. Bang. They are gone … all eyes move to the video screen. A
similar sheet is held over the sand on the beach. Flash. Bang.
There they are. David shows his arm to the camera … with the same
letters on it … the boy takes the Polaroid out … the same audience
members, and signature.

People around me start to scream Ahhhhh! Its raining!!! Spray
covers the audience. Flash. Bang. Mr. Copperfield stands on the
table in front of us, with a grin on his face, throwing sand from his
pockets. Wow.

For those interested in visiting the Gold Coast, a free shuttle runs from the Barbary Coast on The Strip (departing at the side entrance) to the Gold Coast from 9 AM to Midnight every 15-20 minutes. (This is also a great way to get over to The Rio for free as you don’t have to be a hotel guest or produce any ID.)

Every year, I hear stories about people who stake out their seats in the sportsbooks as early as 5 AM to make sure they have a spot for that weekend. I am not aware of any hotel that sets up a separate or expanded area showing all the games, but I don’t pretend to have visited every casino during March Madness. MY VACATION – Where do you vacation when you live in Las Vegas? I had an enjoyable week in Destin/Ft. Walton, FL enjoying the white sands of the Gulf of Mexico. This area truly is a best kept secret. A big thumbs-up to the Ramada Resort down there ( http://www.ramadafwb.com ) for their great service and beautiful setting. My condolences to those who regularly have to fly Delta through Atlanta. What a joke, especially the Delta Connection. They own Atlanta and they don’t care. AirTran — please start serving Las Vegas so I can enjoy more of the Southeast affordably!

FEATURE STORY: Aladdin Grand Opening

I’m running a little late, but so was the opening of the Aladdin! Thursday night came and went, with the casino not yet passing fire inspection. Upwards of 20,000 people were disappointed as the fireworks were postponed and only the Desert Passage shopping area was open to the public for a few hours. Guests were moved to other hotels, but to their credit, the Aladdin only rented out a few hundred rooms the first night, and increased the number of available rooms by a few hundred each evening as they ramp up.

By midmorning on Friday, the casino was open and the last of the current casino building boom on the Strip was officially over. The Aladdin clocked in at around $1.4 billion with 2600 rooms and the 500,000 sq. ft. Desert Passage — the Strip is now lined with casinos from Mandalay Bay to Treasure Island.

The main gaming area has an incredibly high ceiling, and for once a gaming property put it to good use. Casinos like New York, New York and Paris used the height to build facades, but gave little opportunity to offer a balcony perspective of the gaming area to guests. Aladdin put their lounge up a level on a mezzanine, giving you a nice reprieve from the gaming area, and a wonderful open feeling as well.

In addition, the third level rings much of the casino. This level features a number of high end restaurants and a somewhat intimite bar featuring a fantastic view of the gaming floor. It also features The London Club, a seperate posh high-end casino. A weekday visit showed table game minimums at The London Club starting at $25. A few $1 slot and video poker machines are available, but most are $5 and up. If those limits are your style, treat yourself to a little gaming up here. It truly is a cut above.

Much thought was put into challenging hotel/casino norms to give the guests a better experience. The hotel has an extra bank of elevators, so that you will never be more than 7 doors away from an elevator. And (gasp!) you don’t have to trek through the casino to get from check-in (which is one floor below the casino) to your rooms. Just walk over to the bank of elevators and you can zoom up to your floor.

Other unusual things to pamper guests: The Aladdin has installed high speed internet access in every room, and by this fall every room will be outfitted with it’s own computer, connected to their high speed lines letting you surf the web and check email. If you order room service, get ready to get it quick. They have outfitted two elevators as moving kitchens, with continental breakfast items as well as beverages.

The Review-Journal has done a nice run-down of the 19 new restaurants at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-18-Fri-2000/weekly/14178587.html We enjoyed the buffet yesterday evening. Lines were short at 6 PM. The atmosphere is standard (my personal favorites in that category are Bellagio and Main St. Station buffets), but the $18.95 dinner was top-notch with unusual offerings like Middle Eastern food, a fantastic compliment of fresh seafood, as well as the standard cuisine featured at most “food station” buffets.

Desert Passage is huge! It has two legs running along both sides of the hotel and circles the entire Performing Arts Center as well. You can enter the Passage directly from the street, bypassing the casino. Bring your wallet: this high-end mall features 130 upscale and specialty stores and boutiques from all over the world. They have brought in performers and entertainers from around the globe to perform free for the public in the Passage. Full story on that at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-18-Fri-2000/weekly/14139735.html

Two disappointments: The manufactured rainstorm isn’t really much. It takes place every 20 minutes in the area of the mall where wooden planks surround a small body of water. “Lightning” flashes and a much too loud and tinny sounding thunder (put in a subwoofer and turn up the rumble) plays while rain pours down from the ceiling into the water. For best effect, view it from one end or the other so you can really see the sheets of rain. Also, valet parking was a beef with me: if you turn into the parking garage and follow the valet signs, you end up (without warning) in the valet for Desert Passage, NOT for the hotel. The difference? They want $2 (not including gratuity) to park there. Enter the main hotel entrance from Harmon to find the real valet parking.

Those who love Jazz or just good food will applaud the addition of a Blue Note jazz club to Las Vegas at The Aladdin. We have not had a chance to check it out, but two great stories are at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2000/Aug-18-Fri-2000/weekly/14172753.html and http://www.lvcitylife.com/Music/stories/00081701m.html

I’ve placed 4 pages of photos online at http://www.accessvegas.com/aladdin These aren’t PR photos, but my “man on the street” photos taken yesterday throughout the property. Please excuse the quality of some of the indoor shots as they suffered from lack of light. If you own a digital camera that performs well in low light (beyond the flash), fill me in at allvegastv@aol.com as I’m looking around and would love some suggestions!

Thanks for the kind words regarding the newsletter! Interesting you should mention this, as service in Las Vegas was the topic during a Sunday brunch I had with good friends last week, as well as some of the Las Vegas message boards. I regret to say that workers in this town are making so much money, and there is such a pull on the labor market, that good help is hard to find and much of the help that exists doesn’t care.

If you have a negative experience here, I strongly suggest you do two things:

1. Write the hotel immediately when you get home. Detail as specific as possible the problems. Complaint letters have netted me comps for future use. They want you back.

2. DON’T TIP IF THE SERVICE IS BAD! We have valet parking attendants, bartenders, cocktail waitresses, etc., making upwards of $75,000 a year here at the nice places (and some even more). Don’t let them bully you into thinking that their tip is a birthright. Vote with your wallet.

I left Chris’ humorous description of where he lives intact! For now, we won’t make any changes. When we do take the concert listings out of the newsletter, we’ll put them on a webpage and link them in every newsletter. One of the things I am very proud of is that we have readers in over 40 countries around the world!

Keeping up on that with my resources if prohibitive, but we have linked a couple of lists toward the bottom of http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm If anyone knows of additional web pages with tournament information, please let us know at allvegastv@aol.com
