Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! What a strange week it has been. The weekend of October 11-12 brought record cool temperatures (highs in the 60’s F). Things have rebounded nicely, but the sun is down around 6 PM and the evenings are cooling off quickly.

Las Vegas Bikefest Photos – We have the rest of the Bikefest photos from the downtown Las Vegas event a couple of weeks ago. Important: None contain anything you won’t see on basic (U.S.) cable TV but they might not be considered safe for work. Click on a photo to see the associated gallery:

As noted last week, if bikes or girls aren’t your cup of tea, have no fear. Coming issues will debut new photo galleries and updates on some of the great Las Vegas Strip hotels and casinos plus a new Bellagio Gardens photo set! And don’t forget, below each and every photo in our vast Las Vegas Photo Gallery is a “send to a friend” link.

At Tale Of Two Plazas – A local jury has decided that the hotel that may (or may not) end up being constructed on the site of the old Frontier Hotel can use the name The Plaza. This despite the fact that downtown Las Vegas has had a hotel named Plaza since the 1970’s. This because the company building the new hotel here owns New York City’s Plaza hotel, which has a 100 year history.

What a huge mistake that would be! Look… I love the downtown Plaza hotel. I’ve easily visited it hundreds of times in my 15 years here in town. When I lived closer to downtown, I’d head down to Fremont Street 6-7 times per month, parking at The Plaza and stopping for a libation and a few hands of video poker before heading out to unwind, people watch, and grab something to eat. However, let’s not mince words: The downtown Plaza isn’t a luxury resort.

The New York City Plaza is known for being the crÞme de la crÞme. Top notch all the way. However, I’ll bet you that over 95% of Las Vegas visitors aren’t remotely familiar with it. The risk is that when people hear the name Las Vegas Plaza, they will associate it with the more modest downtown property. Visitors who visit downtown will tell friends “We went to the Plaza, it was nothing special.”

An analogy: Lexus isn’t about to come out with a car model called Kia. Nothing wrong with a Kia (Kia owners are laughing with every gas station they pass), but it isn’t a Lexus in terms of luxury. Nothing wrong with the downtown Plaza, but risking association with it when you are going to attempt to build a world-class hotel is simply an error.

Dive-In Movies On The Beach Canceled – The 2008 Dive-In Movies at Mandalay Bay Beach, previously scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 31, have been canceled. No reason was given.

Halloween In Las Vegas Event List – As promised last issue, we have started compiling a list of Las Vegas Halloween Events. More event notices are coming in every few days, so you may want to bookmark that page, tell your friends about it, and check back often.

Enjoy This Issue!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! I swear that I was starting to wonder if we’d ever get this issue out. Every time we got ready to send, more stuff kept flowing in. Photos, news, events… just keep reading!

Last Chance To See Mamma Mia! In Las Vegas – Mamma Mia! closes its amazing run at Mandalay Bay on January 4, 2009. Although I’m going on 16 years as a Las Vegas resident, it is almost hard to remember when Mamma Mia! wasn’t a part of the landscape here. Year after year, it gained raves and often landed on “Top 10 Shows In Las Vegas” lists.

The replacement? No, not another Cirque show (an idea reported to be proposed and rejected). Disney’s The Lion King is shooting for a late Spring 2009 opening. Years ago, Disney resisted being associated with Las Vegas, but no longer holds this concern. The irony? Las Vegas marketed itself as a family destination in the 90’s and now is aáWhat Happens Here, Stays Here getaway. Lion King tickets are not yet on sale. Of course we’ll let you know when available, don’t we always! In the meantime, I strongly suggest seeing Mamma Mia! before it is gone.

If you’ve been, you know how fun it is. If not yet seen, you are in for a treat. This show garners raves from all ages and demographics.

Click for Mamma Mia! Las Vegas Tickets

Wynn Shoots An Encore – Many of you may remember the original Wynn Las Vegas commercial featuring Steve Wynn high atop his new hotel. (We have it archived here:Wynn Las Vegas Commercial). This past week, he climbed high atop his Encore tower to shoot an “encore” to the original. Although details are under wraps, it is said to have Wynn’s typical sense of humor. No word on when it will debut.

More Families In Las Vegas? – If you are seeing more families here on your Vegas visit, don’t think that a “family oriented” Las Vegas is on the return. International tourism is way up (because of our weak dollar). The United States is an affordable family vacation for many in Europe. They’ll spend a couple of weeks here in our country, seeing San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and similar. Given Europe’s comfort level with the human form, I doubt they consider bare behind billboards too risque for their kids:

Mob Museum… What Museum – The long talked about Mob Museum (actually the Las Vegas Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement) is just about under construction and should be done by 2010. The location? Next to the Lady Luck Downtown. (Please don’t write and ask what is up with the Lady Luck. If we knew, I’d let you know. Last news as we reported here was that nothing would happen until the economy turned around, and yes… it is a shame they closed it. Same with Stardust. We lost a couple of fun pieces of history for no apparent reason at all at this time).

Anyway, back to the Mob Museum. The marketing campaign will focus around a pretend secrecy and t-shirts have already been printed that say “There Is No Such Thing As A Mob Museum, Nor Have I Been There.” More on this story: Construction planned on a museum you can’t refuse

Nevada’s Recession – Unemployment here looks to stick at around 9% for the next two years, according to a recent Review-Journal article. That is not a typo. Almost 1 out of 10 people out of work. What does that mean for the visitor? Maybe not much. Tourism volume is staying pretty steady and although rumors of hotel layoffs continue to circulate, they can only cut so much staff. Rooms have to be cleaned and food has to be cooked.

Many read the “terrible” economic numbers for Nevada and fail to realize that our recession is affecting the 500,000 or so people who have moved here the past decade and don’t work in a gaming associated business. Construction is way down (both residential and commercial) and the domino affect has hit the “other” (non-tourist) sectors. We don’t need as many strip mall type of businesses.

My prediction? Unemployment won’t stay that high through 2010 but the housing market will actually get worse next year. Why? The same people who picked up and moved here will pick up and move away just as quickly. This will keep the local housing market depressed but ease unemployment. A great situation if you are moving here to retire (or want to purchase a vacation home/condo) in the next couple of years.

Bikefest Roared Through Town – Fall brings Bikefest to downtown Las Vegas and this year’s event was as big as ever. Mark went on a three day assignment shooting choppers, crowds, bands, bikinis and everything else associated. We’ll feature event photos in following newsletters (always stay subscribed, even when your trip is over). The event kickoff was at Hogs and Heifers Saloon downtown. Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

I am heading to VEGAS for my 14th time spending 4 nights with my boyfriend. We are thinking about seeing the show KA, renting a car for the day and probably getting to Valley of Fire (My boyfriend has been there I haven’t) taking in the pool of course. What would you say is the place to get too outside of VEGAS as a MUST SEE? I have heard great things about ZION PARK but it’s pretty far. We want to try to keep the trip under 4 hours each way if we can. Also any other must get to places?

We aren’t into the clubs I we enjoy live music fun bands. I do like HARRAH’s carnival area too however it can also get packed. Also must get to food places that don’t cost a ton?? We don’t mind buffets and we do like just about every kind of food. Keep in mind we will be at MGM Grand

Thanks,

Alisha

Ted Responds:

Everybody has different tastes, but I’ll do my best:

Everyone I know who has seen KA has really enjoyed it. Zion is too far. Valley of Fire is spectacular, about an hour away.áRed Rock Canyon is 30-40 minutes from The Strip (go mid-morning to avoid traffic). Hoover Dam is amazing. Walking across it is so cool. Carnival Court, Margaritaville (later in the evening live bands) plus the Dueling Pianos inside Harrah’s are fun/party atmosphere that isn’t a nightclub vibe.

The nicer the hotel, the more expensive the buffet. Many hotels (MGM Grand, O Sheas, Monte Carlo and many more) have food courts where you’ll find a variety of regular food chains. Since you have a car, two not-far-away places to check out:

  1. Maryland Parkway across from UNLV (1.5 miles east of The Strip) has a bunch of cool, pretty cheap restaurants and bars. You’ll find something you like.
  2. About 3 miles south of Mandalay Bay right on LV Blvd (The Strip) at Between Warm Springs and Robindale is a big restaurant row. Everything from chains like Chili’s and Chipotle to Mom and Pop type pizza and Mexican places (and tons more). Anybody can find something they like.
  3. Town Square is 5 minutes south of MGM on The Strip (just past the golf course after Mandalay Bay) with a lot of cool shops and restaurants. Blue Martini there has 1/2 off all food from 4-8 PM.

All of the above are literally less than 10 minutes from MGM Grand and #2 and #3 are actually on “The Strip” (just a little bit past the hotel areas).

This was from my Vegas trip, Wayne Newton & I August 2, 2008 at the MGM Grand after Wayne’s show! Please keep me posted on Wayne’s appearances as soon as you hear it.

Thanks!

Donna

Ted Responds:

Wayne is back working for his “old boss” (and friend) Kirk Kerkorian at the MGM Grand through the end of the year after his long run at the Stardust and (more recently) Harrah’s.

He’s also playing in Arizona, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan during November. For dates and tickets: Wayne Newton Tickets

Just wanted to drop a line, first off to thank you for the newsletter and secondly to comment on my recent stay in Vegas (August 8-10).

I am a Canadian who makes the trip at least once a year. Having been in Vegas in June of last year I knew what to expect regarding cost of eating and gambling not being quite the same as previous years… nonetheless… we decided to try it again because lets face it… you gotta love Vegas!! We (me, my husband and a friend) were so disappointed. We stayed at the Imperial Palace (because we were comped) and lets face it…its run down and grungy. The slots at all the strip casinos we went into were so tight… we lost a bundle!!!

But I must say we did get good bar service pretty much everywhere which was nice. We took your advice and went downtown (I really love the atmosphere there anyways!). Had a better time there for sure but still didn’t feel like we were having as much fun as we used to! We did, however, see Jerry Seinfeld while there and boy what a good time we had so all was not lost. Next time we go back we will be staying downtown…enough of the high fallutin’ hotels on the strip… we want to stay where we feel the old Vegas is alive and well.

Barb from Sherwood Park AB Canada

Ted Responds:

Thanks for the report. I’ll speak more on this in a future issue, but gaming executives think that “fun” means playing blackjack where there is an Elvis impersonator dealing the cards, or “fun” is one of the new slot games that nobody even understands.

They forgot that the FUN was playing (and maybe the free cocktails) for a few hours a day. It was the experience of Las Vegas and gambling. The casinos always knew they would usually get your money at the end of the day. By letting people win some, the played longer and were actually prone to losing a little more money. If you’ve been up-and-down, you’ll put in more hoping for another run of luck. If a machine just sucks down your money, you close your purse or wallet and walk.

In previous recessions, people still came and gambled. The downturn in Las Vegas gaming wins isn’t because people are gambling more at Indian casinos. If that were the case, visitor volume would be down substantially. The bottom line is that until people are able to get back to experiencing the true fun of gambling (winning once in a while, getting on an occasional hot streak), the hotels only have themselves to blame. Spend your money on a couple of good shows and an amazing meal or two instead. Much more bang for the buck.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! This is an O.J. free zone. I’m amazed anyone still cares about that clown. Must be a slow news week.

Looks like we’ve seen the last of our 100 degree (F) days for the year. Sun is going down about 7 PM but still plenty of great warm days to hit the pool, but with the amazing lights of our city blazing earlier in the evening. The next couple of months will be amazing for walking The Strip with your favorite cocktail in hand.

Yes… for those of you who have yet to make your first visit: You are welcome to carry your cocktail or beer (glass, bottle, or can) anywhere in our tourism areas. However, police or security will detain you if you get out-of-hand. We have no closing time here. Every hotel has bars and gift shops selling libations 24/7. Simply pace yourself and enjoy Las Vegas. No need to slam drinks to beat “last call.” We don’t have one.

Britney Spears pretty much wrecked her chances of getting a permanent Las Vegas show. Las Vegas show productions are very expensive to produce and promote and Britney has proven herself repeatedly unreliable. Having said that, Fans who grew up with her are now old enough to come enjoy Las Vegas. Never say never.

Best Burgers In Vegas – Our area is host to outlets from three regional burger chains, all of which have a following of people will drive miles out of their way to enjoy one. I want to give you my three picks for the best burgers in Las Vegas. What do they all have in common? All three cook to order with fresh ingredients:

Third Place: In-N-Out Burger – No frills, no frozen stuff, no McFluff. The most simple menu in the world of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, their famous Double Double, basic fries, shakes and soft drinks. Closest one to The Strip is on Tropicana just across the freeway from New York, New York: 4888 Dean Martin Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89103

Second Place: Fatburger – The best “with the frills” burger. You can get hamburger, turkey burger, chicken, topped with things like bacon, an egg, chili or cheese. They have a location right on The Strip across from the Monte Carlo: 3763 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

First Place: Schoops – This is a chain familiar to those of you from the Midwest part of the U.S. The Las Vegas location is a true throwback to the burger and malt shops of the mid-1900’s. Burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes, and malts cooked to order and simply amazing. Their only location is down on the “new” South Strip, just north of the South Point hotel (look for the Stoney’s nightclub sign, then look for the antique mall to the right): 9151 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89123

Reader Submitted Photo – William Stobbs of Salisbury England. submitted this he took while in town during September 11, 2001 as the nation was still in shock and the planes had just started flying again (which was just about exactly 6 years ago as this newsletter goes out):

William sent this about three months ago with with the following note. (We held the photo until now because of the timing with the anniversary of the event):

My Wife (Doreen) and I will be returning to Las Vegas on the 20th Aug 2007 for a 14 Night Holiday staying at the Bellagio. This will be our 10th Visit The first one being in April 1998, We usually stay for 2 and sometimes 3 weeks as the flight from London is so very long and there is so many things to do in LV like visiting the Grand Canyon and rafting down the Colorado from the Dam. Just to name a couple.

We are both Senior Citizens but when we get to Vegas well feel as if we can go on for ever what with the Great weather,Great food and Great Hotels you name it and itÆs in Vegas.

Hello,I try to be in Vegas every year on or around Halloween. Some years the hotels hold Halloween parties on the 31st but other times they hold them on the weekend before or after the actual holiday. I will once again be out there this coming October. Could you tell me what hotels will hold parties and when they are going to be held?

I enjoy Vegas and your report–Thanks

Dave

Ted Responds:

I have no clue. I suspect we’ll start letting us know in early October. As always, we post and/or link to info in the newsletter when it comes in!

This is a good time to remind our of our friends in Public Relations for the various resort properties and nightlife venues that our readers enjoy and use our newsletter to help plan their vacation in advance.

While getting info to the local media right before an event is important (to attract the locals who never venture near The Strip… co’mon), getting us the info well in advance might get the info to visitors who care!

NEWKIRK’S NOTES – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! You guys are amazing. I really appreciate the great response last newsletter with suggestions for helpful information to be added to our site. We are working night and day to get this information up. Some of it is basic, like a gambling primer. Other sections will delve deep into our experiences from spending the past decade living in Las Vegas and frequenting the resort corridor to give you inside information you can use.

The incredible thing about Las Vegas is that we get well over 30 million visitors a year, and no two people have exactly the same experience. You may be a first time visitor, or you may be a regular who just wants to try something new and we’ll walk you through it all!

Finally, we have aligned ourselves with High Logic web hosting. Las Vegas based High Logic is truly the company you need to look at for web hosting, marketing, and more. The price is right and the service is great whether you are a very small outfit or a network of high traffic sites like ours. In addition, their easy-to-use control panel gives you (or your webmaster) simple and instant access to your hosting. Plus, they have a great spam and virus blocker. Our unwanted email decreased almost immediately! Check them out at HighLogic.com

BELLAGIO VS. LE REVE – Now that Steve Wynn (creator of Mirage, Treasure Island, and Bellagio) has announced his ambitious $1.85 billion dollar Le Reve hotel project to sit on the site of the shuttered Desert Inn, Bellagio (which he no longer has anything to do with) has announced a $375 million expansion to add new rooms, more spa, salon, meeting, dining and retail space. The completion date? End of 2004, just before Mr. Wynn expects to complete Le Reve.

So what is the story here? I personally know a number of Mirage/Bellagio players who have had nothing good to say about playing there since Steve Wynn left. We are talking the kind of person who comes prepared to lose thousands and thousands and doesn’t exactly play the nickel machines. They are pissed and counting the days until Le Reve opens. Be interesting to watch this hotel war heat up!

BEST SCENIC ATTRACTION – Last month you voted (or should have!) at AccessVegas.com for the best scenic attraction in the Las Vegas area. Hoover Dam won with 33% of the vote. Runners up were The Grand Canyon (27%), and Red Rock Canyon (20%). Also receiving votes were Valley of Fire, Oatman/Route 66, and Lake Mead. You can take a 1/2 day or full day tour from Las Vegas and enjoy the rugged, breathtaking scenery of the “wild west.” Tour details for all tours at http://www.accessvegas.com/tours

NEW YEAR’S EVE – If you have not done New Year’s in Las Vegas, you just haven’t done New Year’s Eve. If you are even thinking about it, book now because rooms are already filling up. Unfamiliar with Las Vegas New Year’s Eve or just want to show your friends what they missed last year? Check out our New Year’s Eve site with photos, free steaming video, hotel tips, party tips, parking secrets and just about everything else you’d want to see or know. No watered down second hand info here: Every year we are down on The Strip, enjoying it with you!

RESTAURANT REVIEW – Chef John says about Coffee Pub: “The Coffee Pub over time became the place to be seen and the place to see others. Besides the hundreds of daily regulars, celebrities love to hang out there as well.” Read his full review with photos at http://www.accessvegas.com/restaurants/coffee-pub.htm

TONY AND TINA’S Wedding – We’ve been hearing some great things about this show, the second longest running off-Broadway show in history. You actually “attend” an authentic Italian-American Catholic wedding including the nuptials, fully-catered Italian buffet dinner, and the reception with live music. Except the wedding isn’t real, it is just really funny! More details and ticket info at Tony & Tina

MORE NIGHTCLUBS – Ortanique Restaurant in Paris Las Vegas has opened the “Ovation” Nightclub Fridays and Saturdays from 12:30 AM to 6 AM. They feature house DJs playing music from the ’80s, ’90s and today. The nightclub scene in town is getting to be staggering, with so many hotels getting into the act. The scene is so swamped that we have put off developing an expanded nightlife section until it all shakes out.

ATTENTION LOCALS – Speaking of nightclubs and nightlife, we have acquired the domain name “partyvegas.com” (don’t bother … nothing there yet). If you or someone you know is a twenty-something (at least at heart) who enjoys hitting the clubs and lounges on a regular basis and an OK or better writer, we want you. The pay is lousy but the perks are great. Email us at mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

FREE TOURS – of Caesars Magical Empire take place Tuesday-Friday every half hour from 11 AM – 3:30 PM. Tour participants receive a $10 discount coupon for early seating at dinner shows. This is worth checking out just to see the lavish, medieval settting that is the Magical Empire. Read our review of the complete dinner and show at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com/caesars-magical-empire-las-vegas-shows.htm

BIKEFEST — The 2’nd Annual Las Vegas BikeFest will be held September 12-15, 2002 in Downtown Las Vegas and the Fremont Street Experience. Over 6,000 bikers and enthusiasts attended the inaugural event in September 2001. The event will consist of the Vendor Village with over 100 manufacturers, free entertainment, and activities such as a Freedom Rally on the Fremont Street Experience in memorial of the 9/11 tragedy, custom bike show, Miss Las Vegas BikeFest competition, two poker runs, Mr. Las Vegas BikeFest competition, tattoo contest, charity chili cook-off, Motorcyclympics, wet t-shirt contest, and more. Some events require registration. More info at BikeFest

ALL THE FOOTBALL – The Imperial Palace is one of the few hotels showing every single NFL game every Sunday for free. Because of licensing fees and restrictions, many hotels choose not the buy the NFL Sunday Package. In their defense, the NFL wants to charge them based on occupancy of the entire casino area, not just the sports book or bars! The Imperial Palace got around this by showing the games in the showroom of the casino.

800 free, comfortable seats are available. Food and drink specials are served, the Miller Girls are often on hand, and their sports book is just around the corner. This is probably your best bet to catch your favorite team play if the game isn’t broadcast in the Las Vegas area on local TV.

BLOW ME UP TOM – Radio talk show host Tom Leykis is bringing his nationwide (100-plus stations) broadcast to the Indigo Lounge at Bally’s this Friday from 3-7 PM Pacific time. His infamous “listener parties” are the stuff of legend. The event is free and open to the public. Locally, the show can be heard on 1140 AM from 3-7 PM live and repeated Midnight – 6 AM. If he broadcasts in your city (check both the AM and FM talk stations between 3-7 PM Pacific), you can hear the mayhem yourself.

AFAN BENEFIT – The Generic Black & White Party XVI, a fundraiser for Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) that benefits individuals and families living with HIV and AIDS, will be held Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8 PM at the outdoor nightclub SKIN in the Palms Casino Resort. A ticket to the event also includes admission to the pre-party at Ghost Bar at the top of the Palms from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the after-party entitled “The Lucille Ball” starting at 10 p.m. and the chance to see Grammy-nominated pop star Taylor Dayne performing such hits as “Tell It To My Heart,” “I’ll Be Your Shelter,” and “Every Beat of My Heart.”

Event tickets are $50 per person and may be purchased in advance by visiting http://www.insideafan.org or in person at Stuff inside the Palms Casino Resort. Tickets also go on sale the night of the event at 7 p.m. at the door. Additionally, guests can obtain a ticket by donating $40 worth of nonperishable food or toiletries. All food and toiletry items must be dropped off at the Official Generic Black & White Party XVI truck prior to entering the Palms Casino Resort.

FEEDBACK:

M. Smithson of the Canary Isles wrote,

I know that we will never forget September 11’th but it just occurred to me, I know that you still fly, and encourage everyone to do so, but I visit Vegas and America every two years, would like it to be every two months, what I would like to say to the people of America is, don’t let them win. Keep your Airlines flying, so much heroism so much bravery, and to mention the last words of the guys on flight 93 LETS ROLL, so America lets roll, go enjoy all your wonderful resorts don’t let all those brave people down fly enjoy.

Thanks for the encouraging words! We were out both Friday and Sunday nights over the usually busy Labor Day weekend (last weekend was a three day American holiday weekend) and while always busy, The Strip seemed to resemble just another weekend, and not the throngs usually seen for a holiday. We’ve also seen soft booking numbers the past couple of weeks (people planing future trips).

I think people are concerned and reflective right now and will be for the next week. As noted, I’ll be flying on September 11 this year. No, not because I got a cheap deal, but to enjoy time with my out-of-state family for a few days. Of course, I’m also getting more pleasure out of flying than ever. It is my smack in the face to those who thought their actions were going to change our way of life. Not mine you won’t!
