Hello From Las Vegas! – And a very Happy New Year as we welcome in 2012. 2011 was a turnaround year for Las Vegas tourism. We got The Plaza back, the new Tropicana, and Cosmo completed their first full year. We did lose The Sahara but their owner is swearing up and down that they are getting ready to remodel it.

We fell just short of the all-time visitor volume record of 39.2 million (hitting an even 39 million). We’ll have no problem busting through that this coming year barring anything completely crazy happening.

New Years Eve saw 314,000 people flock to town. Room occupancy hit 98% despite the fact that obnoxiously high rates were the norm. The recovering economy and New Years Eve falling on a Saturday night sure didn’t hurt. Neither did the stretch of warm weather we’ve been happening. Temps at midnight were in the low 40’s with no wind but if you’re in the middle of the crowds, it feels much warmer. This past week saw unusually warm temps near the 70’s.

Blink And You’ll Miss It – Regular readers know that I mock the New York City celebration every year (when compared to ours). I was actually at home under the weather this year (I’ll live… Las Vegas happens 365 days per years) which provided me the opportunity to view the New York City ball drop. Almost. At 9 PM our time, I was switching back and forth between Fox News (ball drop), CNN (ball drop), and ESPN (which was hosting a daredevil jump by a couple of Evel Knievel wannabes). I flipped over to ESPN just for a few seconds to watch the wind-up to the jump and literally missed the ball drop.

So let me get this straight: People come from all over the world to Times Square many, many hours early so they can be put in pens (like cattle) to view a 60 second ball drop. Are you kidding me?!? You wanna talk about a cure for insomnia…

By the way, New York claims that over a million people attend the ball drop. Guess what: Reports I read note that only 17 blocks around Times Square are shut down for the event. Which makes that million number a blatant lie. You simply can’t fit a million people into 17 closed off blocks.

Side Note: Every year I hear from a few unhappy New Yorkers about all of this. Hey, if you want to explain he logistics of getting a million people into 17 blocks worth of street space, I’m all ears. I know what the 250,000 on The Strip look like and they pretty much fill up 3 miles of boulevard.

I digress…

Fortunately, at 10 PM our time, both KLAS and KSNV kicked in to their extensive local coverage. If you read my blog post (last issue) about New Years Eve tips or followed us on Twitter that night, you knew that KLAS actually streamed the entire coverage and both stations put on a network quality show.

I’m in utter shock why the LVCVA (Visitors Authority) here doesn’t partner with one of them and a cable network and broadcast our celebration to the nation. Sure, the time difference would be a factor (we’re three hours behind the East Coast, two hours behind Central Time), but you’d still have a fair amount of people curious enough to watch in many parts of the country.

Lion King Record – Looks like many of you took our advice to see The Lion King before it closed here in Las Vegas. The show grossed $1,369,460 in the final week at Mandalay Bay, a theatre record. (It didn’t hurt that Las Vegas is getting more busy than ever and the week between Christmas and New Years is a heavy family week here). Tale Of Two Cities – We’ll hear from a reader who said they visited and Las Vegas was somewhat dead, then hear from one who visited a week later and marveled at how busy it was. Here’s what most people forget: Las Vegas is a very different place depending on time of year, day of the week, and even time of day!

If you usually visit on the weekdays, the weekend Las Vegas will be a bit foreign to you (more crowds, harder partying). If you are a daytime person who is in bed by midnight here, you’d be amazed at how vastly different things are a 1 PM as opposed to 1 AM. Fremont Street can be especially varied as daytimes feature an older crowd who are there to gamble. But once the sun goes down and the free entertainment starts, the party crowd takes over. Especially the nice weather months (March – October).

Why The Hilton Name Change – Both the Atlantic City and Las Vegas Hilton hotels have had to cease using the Hilton name. Evidently, their franchise agreements were not renewed by the Hilton Corporation for reasons that weren’t disclosed. An article in the November issue of Travel and Leisure magazine seemed to point out the reason why: Hilton is working to reinvent the brand with hundreds of new hotels (many of a more boutique nature) and shedding the stodgy image that a property like the Las Vegas Hilton carries.

Don’t Text In Your Car Here – Nevada has joined the list of states not allowing texting while driving. If you get ticketed, you’re out $50 (plus I assume court costs which can run into the hundreds). Hands-free devices are allowed. I don’t even touch my phone when driving in the resort corridor. It takes enough work to watch for other drivers who are sight-seeing and pedestrians who don’t understand “Don’t Walk” signs (like they have to hurry to the next hotel before it closes or something).

No Skyline Change For Now – The condemned (and never opened) Harmon tower — next to Cosmopolitan — won’t be coming down in the near future. The demolition hearing isn’t until March. It will take all that time to get the finger-pointing taken care of, have a judge decide who is at fault, and decide if it really isn’t fixable.

Super Bowl – Right around this time of year, we start to get the “What is happening for Super Bowl?” questions. Information on various events has already started coming in and we’ll list it starting next week. However, don’t hold your breath on info for the hotel parties. For some crazy reason, they get us that info about three days before kickoff which leaves us no time to include it here (although we will get it on Twitter this year). Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hi, we have been going to Las Vegas for over 35 years.

This year, we wanted to go to Las Vegas from Jan 15 to Jan 22, 2012. We were looking at going to see Celine Dion.

We booked the flight, then the Vdara. We later learned the Vdara wanted to charge a resort fee. We are not aware of ever paying any resort fees previously and in many situations we were provided with many extra benefits and sometimes free rooms.

The travel Agent called the Vdara to see if they would waive the resort fee as my wife and I do not make use of any of the facilities and never have with any of the hotels we have stayed in Las Vegas.

They would not waive the fees. Therefore, I canceled the trip and am booking Hawaii. I will not pay for something I do not use or do not believe is fair.

Just thought I would let you know as I have been reading your material for many years and you have helped me out in the past.

The following properties do not charge resort fees at last check:

Bally’s, Bills, Caesars, Cosmo, Harrah’s, Flaminigo, Manderin, Paris, IP, Planet Hollywood, and most major downtown hotels.

This isn’t a Vegas issue. Quite a few (upwards of 30, too many to list) Hawaii resorts also charge resort fees. Some to the tune of $25-30 per night. Hopefully, you’ll end up at one that does not, but you might want to check.

I’m no fan of resort fees, but they are becoming par-for-the-course. Your best way to fight back is to only patronize properties which don’t impose them. As you are passionate about this issue, you may also wish to contact your Senator or House Member and ask them to look into whether these fees are misleading or not.

Regarding the possibility of putting strip clubs in casinos, you said “Let’s keep the strip clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong.”

Here’s my idea; Let’s put the ultra clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong!!!

I (and a lot of other Vegas visitors I know) are sick of the way the casinos are focusing on the drunken, obnoxious, rude, rowdy, 20 something douche bags who take over the casinos either at night, or by day at the pools. Don’t the casinos want us gamblers anymore???

No comps, no drink service, no decent payouts, no respect!!! Vegas was built by us but we have been forgotten by the corporations who now run their little casino monopolies.

I would much rather have a strip club which only attracts men who will come and go without much notice, than an ultra club that is completely the opposite!

No question that this issue has been coming to a head. When Steve Wynn spent nearly $70 million to build the Encore Beach Club, the complaints about “douchebags” and Jersey Shore (the reality show) types overrunning the property has become a serious issue among those who are there for the upscale gambling experience. One wonders if it played (even a little bit) into the decision to close the five star, five diamond Alex French restaurant at Wynn. The clubbers spend all day at the pool, nap in the evening, spend all night in the clubs, then nap in the morning. They aren’t sitting down to a 2 hour, $200 meal.

The clubbers and pool party goers are extremely lucrative. They pay steep admission fees, drink lots of $14ádrinks (with 30 cents worth of booze in it), and pay many hundreds/thousands of dollars for “bottle service” (where a $30 retail bottle of liquor is purchased for $400 and way up to insure that the guests get a private table). However, is it so lucrative that the properties don’t mind scaring off good gamblers? That seems to still be in question.

Cosmopolitan is proving an interesting study. They opened wanting to attract (in their words) the “curious class”. And to a point they have. Guests love their mixology bars, restaurants, and the club Marquee is a huge hit. The problem? This “curious class” isn’t at all curious about gambling! Which is having a significant impact on their bottom line. So much so, that they just hired an experienced Las Vegas hotel executive away from another property to help turn that situation around.

At the end of the day, you have to vote with your feet and play elsewhere. Which I know can be a very difficult concept if you are a comped gambler somewhere. They know you. They send you all those great offers. Other casinos may not.

My advice for people in those shoes? On your next trip, do half of your gambling at your usual place and do half of it at a “douche free” property that you enjoy (obviously using a players card so your play is tracked). Your normal property is unlikely to decrease your offers based on less play for just one trip, and you may be surprised at the offers you start to get from the new property you tried out.

Hello From Las Vegas! – We want to wish everybody a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and pleasant whatever-you-are-celebrating. Normally, we have a new photo from the Bellagio Gardens holiday display in the newsletter leading up to the 25’th, but we’ve been so busy, I haven’t even been over to see it this year! Rest assured, I have Christmas music playing in my office here.

This will be the final issue of 2011. With many reading at work (and not at work many days until the end of the year), this issue could be read at any time over the next 10 days.

The Lion King Comes To A Close – We’d like to thank The Lion King for being a long-time sponsor and helping us keep the lights on around here. It had a fantastic run in a town where shows can be fleeting. Some fun facts they sent us over:

When THE LION KING at Mandalay Bay ends…

  • The cast will have performed a total of 1,078 performances.
  • 1.4 million guests will have seen the show.

Coupons – We occasionally get asked if we put out a coupon book. Not at this time. Las Vegas if full of so many deals (we publish ones we find, and tweet those that don’t make deadline) and the problem with coupons is the time burn you spend chasing them. We recently noted that (on average) your time in Las Vegas is costing you over $15 per waking hour. Is it worth going out of your way for a $5-10 coupon (if that) on something that you otherwise probably wouldn’t have thought about seeing or doing?

As previously noted, we do plan to do an amazing job of aggregating all the deals and specials out there once we go to a paid subscriber model (which will allow us to hire someone for that daunting task). No coupons needed!

Don’t Believe It – Men’s Health just ranked Las Vegas as the 10’th “saddest” city in America. (St. Petersburg, FL worst, Honolulu was best). There of the big factors used were unemployment, use of antidepressants, and suicides. No question that people in Florida and Nevada are more “pilled up” than the norm. Doctors are quick to write scripts. Also, with the number of visitors and new residents (who find out that living here isn’t the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow), we’re going to have higher suicide numbers. On a related note…

Another “Great” Showing – Las Vegas ranks 136’th (out of 143 cities) for having the worst credit! Why I won’t toss that into the “blame the recession” basket? Las Vegan’s have always had terrible credit (as a whole). When I bought my first condo in 1995, I was told “Wow, you have really good credit. That is unusual here”.áThe average Las Vegan who uses credit owes just under $25,000. Best credit cities? Wausau-WI, Minneapolis-MN, and Madison-WI. Interestingly enough, all cities within 300 miles of each other.

Condo City – The median price of a condo in Las Vegas is a paltry $50,000. This will generally get you around 1000 sq. ft. and two bedrooms, two bathrooms in a decent area. (If you want to go high-rise on/near The Strip or downtown, you’ll looking at low six figures for a smaller one bedroom). Bring your wallet for the cheaper places. Getting a mortgage loan for a place under $50k is almost unheard of and about 90% of the closings are cash sales.

International Traffic WAY Up – October saw a 31% increase in international traffic to McCarran (Las Vegas) airport. As usual, no surprise to me. This year, the percentage of visitors to AccessVegas.com from outside the U.S. has gone up from 25% to 29%.

We know it is a hassle flying such long distances and having to deal with security and immigration. We appreciate you reading and appreciate your patronage. Overall traffic to the airport was up 5%. Among the domestic cities showing big gains sending visitors here? My hometown of Portland, OR. All visitor numbers continue to climb.

I’m Shocked! (Not) – The company that blew up The Frontier (across from Wynn) has announced they are scrapping plans to build a hotel there. As it is, the name of the property was going to be The Plaza (as in the New York City hotel). That alone shows how brainless these people were. Las Vegas already has a Plaza and at the time plans were originally announced, the downtown Plaza wasn’t a property you’d want a high-end hotel confused with. The Frontier was a dump in its latter years, but it was a fun dump. And much preferable to empty real estate with will stay that way for years to come.

Strip Clubs In Casinos – Yet another topic which I couldn’t address before as it would have gotten stuck in email filters. Rumblings have been heating up again about the option of putting strip clubs inside casino resorts. Casinos hate to see their customers walk out the door, and all that time and money spend at off-strip strip clubs adds up to money not spent on site.

I believe this is a bad idea all around. A significant amount of Vegas visitorship comes from “conservative” middle America. They (perhaps this is you) will have a few drinks and cut loose and perhaps aren’t a prude. But putting the “Sin City” image over the top may take the playful nature of the image one notch too far. Also, we have to think of our convention traffic. Does the wife really want the husband running off to a hotel that has a strip club in it? Let’s keep the strip clubs over in the industrial area behind the hotels where they belong.

The Las Vegas Line – When you read a sports page or watch sports programs here in the US, you’ll hear them say “Las Vegas likes Team A by 6 points over Team B”. Believe it or not, no one here in town sits down and figures out how much a team will win by. The betting line is actually determined by the betting public. For any given game, the sports books want to get an absolutely even amount of money bet of both sides. They want to see (for example) one million dollars bet on Team A and one million on Team B. Because they make you bet $11 to win $10, they simply want to sit back and give the losers’ money to the winners, pocketing that extra $1 on each $10 bet.

To get an even amount of money on each side, they set the line (which team is favored and by how much) to a point that will draw bets on both sides. If one team is perceived by the public to be better, the line will reflect that to get people betting on the underdog. Bet the “dog” on a game where the point spread is 6, and you automatically get 6 points added to that team’s score at the end of the game (for betting purposes… whether you “win” or not). Bet the favorite, and you need to subtract 6 points from your teams score at the end of the game.

Using our original example, if Team A wins by 3 points, they may win the game, but the bets on Team B are actually the winning bets. Because although they lost by 3, they got to add those 6 points on for betting purposes.

Hello From Las Vegas! I never thought I was going to get this issue out. This was supposed to be our 10’th Anniversary Issue and we have tons of new photo sets, show reviews, new giveaways and even more to roll out.

We played with the idea of making this a double-sized issue or doing two separate huge issues. But with Las Vegas heating up again (both literally with the weather and figuratively as visitor volume starts to return), this next year in our company history looks to be the biggest ever. So I sat down and said “Let’s celebrate our 10 years for the entire coming year. More photo sets, more in-house articles, more giveaways.”

We’ve hooked up with the various hotels, shows, and attractions to do just that. We already have a “line around the block” of PR friends setting up everything with us. Stay tuned and stay subscribed. This will be an amazing year for both us at Access Vegas and Las Vegas in general.

Fourth Of July – We already have people asking what will be happening, especially as this holiday falls on a weekend. We’ve set up a Las Vegas Fourth of July page you can follow. Please note that fireworks events are typically not announced until a week or two ahead of time. When we start to hear about specific events, we’ll certainly be listing them on that page, and here in the newsletter.

The New Tropicana? – Tropicana Las Vegas owners are vowing a major $100 million upgrade of every facet of the resort. The Tropicana was the pride of The Strip at one time and actually still continues to be a very popular resort because of the location, price and famous pool area. (See Tropicana Las Vegas pool photos).

With the financial troubles of MGM Mirage and Harrah’s (the two big companies that each own a number of hotels), I believe we’ll see quite a resurgence of some of the older properties like the Tropicana, Riviera, and Sahara over the next few years.áDon’t be surprised if Circus Circus is eventually sold off and upgraded to its former state as a prime attraction as well. Hey, it could happen.

Over the decades, the Las Vegas Strip was at its best when many different groups owned the various hotels and competition for your gambling dollar was paramount. Side Note: The rumored shut-down of The Sahara for remodeling and upgrades at this time has proved to be just that: A rumor.

Rio and Girls Of Sapphire Charity Bikini Car Wash – Last week, The Rio hosted a charity car wash… Las Vegas-style. The girls of Sapphire offered plenty of eye candy in Sapphire bikinis as they lathered up cars for the cause. All contributions were donated to the United Way and festivities included a dunk tank, McFaddenÆs-sponsored food booth and even sno-cones. Bootlegger Open Mic Returns – For much of this decade, a popular locals secret was the Monday night “karaoke” at longtime famous local hangout Bootlegger Bistro. The place would be packed, often with celebs and performers of many popular Las Vegas shows just having a drink and having some fun.

The tradition is revived on Monday nights at 9 PM with Kelly Clinton returning as host. Bootlegger is located three miles south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Blvd at the corner of The Blvd. and Robindale (just south of the huge outlet mall). Maybe not a must-do for the first time visitor, but if you are a Las Vegas regular always looking for a special slice of our special culture, this is worth a couple hours of your time.

Viva Las Vegas – The 1964 Elvis Presley movie shot on location here airs this coming week at 11:15 AM Pacific Time on Turner Classic Movies (check your cable listings). Turner airs films un-cut and has no commercials. Set your DVR’s and tape decks.

Le Reve: A Surreal Journey Above and Below A Dream

Dreams can often be ethereal and elusive, and Le Reve is no different. Watching Le Reve is in essence watching someone elseÆs dream, which is represented through a bed that floats away in the beginning of the show. Nonetheless, if most peopleÆs dreams mirrored the spectacles and intricacies in ôLe Reveö it would be baffling if anyone would ever want to be awake!

The Wynn Theater, which is home toáLe Reve, is in and of itself an act. The round and tiered theater is drenched in rich colors and fabrics and eludes a sense of comfort and tastefulness. But the eye catcher is the center, the stage, if you will, which is water. Not water as in a small pool, but entirely consisting of water. However, all of the action is not in the water alone, quite a few of the intrepid acts also take place in the air.

Anthony Cools Induces What Happens In Vegas

Crude, crass, and utterly amazing easily describes the laugh out loud performance of Anthony Cools, hypnotist and comedian extraordinaire. The Anthony Cools Experience is a tremendous exercise in what can happen when you give someone else power over your mind, pushing you to do things you probably would not consider.

As you enter the theater, you pass a sign stating that you are waiving any rights to what happens in the theater and that the Anthony Cools Experience has the right to videotape and sell what happens during the show. At the start of the show, a little white rabbit greets the audience with warnings about the vulgar language and acts that will be performed; however, the rabbit does issue caveats regarding specific words that may not be uttered. This bunny sets the few lines that Cools will not cross.

Joining blink-182 for this incredible show will be indie-rockers Chester French and punk-rockers Motion City Soundtrack. Travis Barker, Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus, better known as blink-182, set the alternative nation abuzz with excitement and anticipation earlier this year when they officially announced they are back together.

Limp Bizkit To Perform At Mandalay Bay Beach As Part Of UFC 100 Event Weekend – The most historic event in UFC just got bigger with the announcement that rap-metal pioneers Limp Bizkit will bring their Unicorns N’ Rainbows tour to Mandalay Bay Beach Friday, July 10. This will be the band’s first North American concert in eight years as they kick off the UFC 100 weekend. Once the hits “Break Stuff,” “Rollin” and “My Way” blast through the speakers, guests will have all the adrenaline they need for UFC 100 the next night. The concert is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. with special guest BoneyB.

Members Mania will return next week, and I’m happy to announce that we’ll soon have an expanded Members Mania in the form of a web forum. Long time readers probably remember that we used to have reader forums. The ancient software we were using finally pretty much ceased functioning and we didn’t revive them at the time.

I’ve been putting Las Vegas information online since 1995 and on an internet site since 1996 with our original In-Vegas.com (which ironically we are reviving in the form of a Las Vegas news feed which aggregates from a number of sources). Blogs didn’t exist and web forums were clunky at best. All of the early software we used for everything from building the site to sending this newsletter became obsolete over the years. We’ve spent the past year completely starting from scratch with (mostly) custom built solutions that will continue to grow with us over the next many years.

We are putting the finishing touches on our new Members Mania forums and you’ll obviously be the first to know when they are up!

Some Las Vegas maps only show where the hotels are and others are far too general. We’ve taken your feedback to heart and think you’ll be thrilled with this new feature. We’re hoping (knock on wood) to debut it in about three weeks.

Las Vegas Nightclub Offices Raided By IRS – We occasionally get notes from people who want to know what the secrets are to getting into the major Las Vegas nightclubs. The answer is simple: Cash. And, all this cash has attracted the attention of the IRS:

We’ll follow up as the story develops. It has never been a secret that the nightclubs seem only second to gambling as a cash cow in Las Vegas and the tips in that industry can be second to none.

Jimmy Hopper Returns – All-around singer and magician Jimmy Hopper is a favorite of long-time readers. Many times a year, we get a “what is up with Jimmy Hopper” email. After being gone from town for three years (he was a mainstay in the Fontana Lounge at Bellagio), he’ll now be performing in the Lava Lounge at Trader Vic’s (Planet Hollywood) Thursday through Sunday nights. He starts February 21’st. Welcome back Jimmy!

Last couple of issues, we have reported on the five year anniversary of Mamma Mia! here in Las Vegas. A tremendous run indeed! Mamma Mia! The Las Vegas NASCAR race is less than two weeks away. This is by far one of the biggest events of the year. The race is usually sold out and hosts one of the biggest crowds of any race on the NASCAR circuit. NASCAR Las Vegas Tickets: Las Vegas Pole Day, Sam’s Town 300, UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400

We made a photo run and grabbed some great photos of the interior of the NASCAR Cafe at The Sahara. Lots of full size replica cars, memorabilia, and the food/drink isn’t too bad. However… if you are coming in for the race, skip it. Enjoy the photos for now, and enjoy the actual Cafe another time. Just about everybody (literally) in town over race weekend is a NASCAR fan and you don’t want to fight anymore crowds than you’ll always have to.

PS I won’t call it The Sprint Cup. Sprint cell phones seem to have the worst reception in Las Vegas and their customer service is terrible.

Las Vegas Native Kurt Busch Meet/Greets – The driver of the Miller Lite #2 Dodge car is doing two meet and greets in conjunction with NASCAR weekend. The first one will be on February 28 at PT’s Sierra Gold Ultra-Tavern, 6515 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89118 from 7 – 9 PM (limited to the first 300 people in line). The second will be at The Palms, February 29 from 7:30 – 9:00 PM.

The Podcast Finally Returns… We’ve dusted off all the equipment, tested everything, and the Insider Vibe Podcast will return in about 10 days. So please… no more emails about bringing it back. We appreciate the interest, and are extremely close to cranking it up.

MAMMA MIA!, the longest-running, most successful Broadway musical to play the Las Vegas Strip, marks its fifth anniversary this week. (Tickets) To celebrate, Mayor Oscar Goodman took chance as a spandex-savvy Dynamo. – The show opened in the ‘entertainment capital of the world’ on February 13, 2003 and set a new house record within a week of opening at the Mandalay Bay Theatre. In five successful years it has played almost 2,000 performances and been seen by more than 2,000,000 people in Las Vegas.Las Vegas Strip To Host NASCAR Hauler Parade On Feb. 28 – On Thursday, Feb. 28, the colorful NASCAR team haulers, transporting the Sprint Cup race cars that will compete later that week, will parade north on the Strip. The transporters will be staged at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the south end of The Strip. The haulers will then move north using the middle lane of northbound Las Vegas Boulevard.

The haulers will proceed the roughly five miles to Sahara Avenue before returning to Interstate 15 and the short ride north to the speedway. Race fans will be able to watch the hauler parade from both sides of the Strip and from any of the properties along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Gambling Talk: Video Keno – Part Five – with Victor H. Royer. Top and Bottom Keno – This is quite a popular game, one that got its video version interest from the Lounge Keno version. In the Lounge Keno game, there are two versions of precisely this same game. The original version was the classic Top/Bottom ticket, where you bet on how many numbers would appear either at the “top” of the ticket — the “top” numbers 1-through-40 as shown on the ticket layout — versus the “bottom” portion of the ticket, showing the numbers 41-through-80, as printed on the keno tickets, and as being displayed on the keno board, and also on Video Keno screens. I make one to two trips a year to Vegas and read a Vegas paper everyday but your newsletter keeps me up on what to do and what to avoid when in Vegas. Bravo!

For the life of me I cannot figure out why these people keep taking cabs to hotels from McCarran. You know they rip you off. Take a little more time and pay a lot less for a round trip shuttle. I love the shuttles and they are every inexpensive compared to the cabs. Also another way to beat the cabs is take the DEUCE around Vegas. This is another great bargain and beats walking to the monorail stations.

Hello,I have a question from this weeks newsletter regarding The Producers ending in February. It seems that Las Vegas shows stick around for a while, and The Producers is closing only after a year. Is there a reason behind that, was it not profitable? If it has to do with profitability, what would this mean for future Broadway shows coming to stay for a long while in Las Vegas? Just curious, thanks for your time.Sandra KorbarThere isn’t any one single answer. Mamma Mia has been successful for years. Phantom is doing solid business, although it is somewhat of a derivative with the theater itself playing a role in providing the wow factor. (We don’t want to ruin it for those who have not seen it).

With The Producers, a run of a year isn’t bad. Shows that are complete failures don’t last that long. Numerous factors go into a show having a buzz and being successful. Just as one can’t pick a guaranteed winning slot machine ahead of time, there is no way to know what works in Las Vegas until someone tries it.

Hello From Las Vegas! Super Bowl Sunday brought some miserable weather with high winds and rain. Fortunately, just about everyone was inside watching one of the most exciting NFL championship games in some time! I had no rooting interest in either team, and am kicking myself for breaking a long tradition I have of betting on the Super Bowl: If I’m ambivalent about both teams, I’ll toss a few bucks on the underdog to win outright. If they win, the bet will generally pay 2 or 3 times my original wager (depending on how much of an underdog the team is). New England looked so strong this year, I skipped making an underdog bet on The Giants. Big Mistake! Moral of the story? Get your bets in, especially when it is just a few bucks for fun!

Prior to the game, huge hoopla surrounded the notion that betting on the game here in Nevada would top $100,000,000. In reality, the “handle” on the game was $92,000,000 and not even a record. Many conjecture that this number keeps from growing despite growth in tourism here because the sports books are more hesitant to take larger wagers (in the tens, and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars) which may hurt them. As it is, the books lost $2,600,000 on the upset as people were betting the underdog.

Bonus Super Bowl Trivia Questions – We have some fun stuff collecting dust in the prize closet, and we are cleaning it out to make way for some very cool new contests and giveaways (as soon as we get our slick new contest software up and running). Striking New Display Incorporates Ancient Art of Feng Shui to Welcome Year of the Rat — Bellagio’s Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is celebrating the 2008 Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rat, with a unique display filled with hidden meaning. The Conservatory’s design is guided by the ancient practice of Feng Shui– the art of using surroundings to attract harmony, balance and positive life energy. The dramatic centerpiece of this exhibit will be found perched atop an oversized, flowering branch. Here, a botanical, 5-foot-tall rodent will watch guests with an inquisitive eye. The auspicious rat’s lush coat will be made of red Alternanthera, a low-growing herb, with a touch of pink Hypoestes, a tropical plant. His long curling tail and delicate whiskers will be made of metal.

Legend has it that Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came. The rat is revered for its place as first in the Asian zodiac and is a symbol of renewal. Those born in the Year of the Rat tend to be intelligent, charming and practical. Just steps away from Bellagio’s delightful rodent ambassador, an 18-foot-tall Chinese God of Wealth and Fortune will be found amidst gleaming I-Ching coins, a traditional Chinese money symbol. Widely recognized as the strongest symbol of good fortune in China, the God of Wealth and Fortune will be flanked by two Ming Dynasty-styled dings, ancestral vessels that protect against bad luck.

Nearby, visitors will find a zigzag bridge leading to a beautiful, wing-tipped gazebo painted a deep red lacquer with shimmering gold trim and green-tiled roofs. The color red signifies happiness while the upturned roofline will ward off evil spirits and the sharp pattern of the bridge will protect against negative energy and bad spirits. A majestic mountain, seen as a pillar between heaven and earth, will serve as a dramatic backdrop. The teachings of Feng Shui also will be used to purposely position the flow of water into Bellagio’s Conservatory, and not away, ensuring the flow of positive energy. From a tranquil Koi pond to a shimmering waterfall, water will denote the larger world we live in while carp will signify good luck and everlasting good fortune. Celebrate The Chinese New Year At Gold Coast – Gold Coast Hotel and Casino will celebrate the Chinese New Year on February 12 with one of the largest traditional Chinese Dragon Dances in Las Vegas. At 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. a traditional Chinese lion and a 62-foot Chinese dragon will dance through the casino to bring good luck to all in attendance. Bette Midler The Showgirl Must Go On To Premiere At The Colosseum On Feb. 20 – Known for her incomparable humor, over-the-top imagination and captivating charisma, the Divine Miss M. has appropriately titled her new Las Vegas production Bette Midler The Showgirl Must Go On. Sirens of TI Welcome Metropolitan Choppers To Las Vegas – The Sirens of TI, the local beauties and the inspiration behind Metropolitan Choppers’ most intricate design piece — the “Sirens of TI Chopper” — signed autographs and met with fans along with Metropolitan Choppers (Frederick, MD) owner Rick Hill on Sunday, December 30.

Completely sculpted from metal, the main frame of the “Sirens of TI Chopper” showcases the face and body of a tantalizing Siren with hair streaming back and knee-high stiletto boots covering the exhaust pipes, while sculpted filigree waves form the bike’s rear fender and grace the front wheel. Hello From Las Vegas! We are running just a bit late this week and letting the dust settle on another mind-blowing Las Vegas New Years Eve. Every year, it just gets bigger and more amazing. Almost 5 miles of the Las Vegas Strip closed to traffic and filled with people, every nightclub jammed, every hotel ballroom full of life, private parties in thousands of rooms… there is simply nothing like it!

The Vegas celebration is called America’s Party, but it really should be called the World’s New Years party both in size, scope, and to reflect the participation of visitors from almost every nation.

In our last issue, I lamented that the local TV coverage of the event wasn’t available worldwide. The celebration isn’t just about 8 minutes worth of fireworks at midnight, but a party that starts at dusk and continues into the early morning.

Guess what? KVBC actually put an archive of their entire coverage online including “Your Vegas is Showing” slogan, interesting costumes, interesting characters, Hawaiian Tropic Zone, Pussycat Dolls, 40/40, Pure, celebs, and (of course) The Fireworks. Very cool of them, and all of it well worth watching if you ever wondered “should we really do Vegas for New Years or is it all hype?” Check it out: America’s Party 2008 Highlights Video

Bellagio Gallery Of Fine Art’s ‘American Modernism’ Opens February 2008 – Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art will showcase the best of “American Modernism” February 8 through October 15, 2008. Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the exhibition will feature masterworks by American modernists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Stuart Davis and Marsden Hartley. Hours of operation for Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art are Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Lady Luck continues to be in limbo. It appears that a new group is buying it but with no stated plans yet. This is unfortunate as it was a favorite of many. The staff was friendly, and the gourmet room was a best-kept secret.

I mocked the plans of the Maxim Magazine themed hotel next to Circus Circus (announced in 2006) and it looks dead. MGM owns the empty land to the north and has not announced plan specifics. They are pretty busy building MGM CityCenter right now.

Just returned from LV last week. Stayed at the Paris. The taxi ride from McCarran airport to the Paris cost $21, $25 including tip! He took the I-15 route instead of the short Paradise Rd route. The trip back to the airport cost only $11, $15 including tip! Why the big difference? The first cabbie just ripped us off!Thanks for the newsletter!

Hello From Las Vegas! Christmas was sunny but on the chilly side. We hope you and yours had a great holiday. New Years Eve is in the air and slated to be another huge year. Winds permitting, The Strip with light up with fireworks from the MGM to Stratosphere. The Plaza downtown is putting on their own fireworks show at 12:30 AM as to not conflict with the massive celebration taking place under the Fremont Street light show canopy.

Local TV station KLAS has streamed the fireworks show live in years past. No indication if they are going to do so this year, but you can try their link just before midnight Pacific and see.

It is unfortunate that most of you can’t watch the full 2-3 hour coverage that our local stations do. Short of being here in person, there is really no way to describe the excitement and festivities. The ball drop in New York City is about as exciting as watching paint dry in comparison.

The networks would love to do New Years from Las Vegas. The problem? Midnight on the east coast is only 9 PM here, a time when the party is barely getting started.

Do you have a few people you missed giving holiday Best Wishes to? Co’mon… we all had a couple of people we heard from that we didn’t get a card or note to. It isn’t too late: Pick one of the great holiday photos from our Bellagio Gardens Christmas 2007 Pictures area and send it as an E-Card right now!

Flying Etiquette – Delta Airlines has created a number of short online videos about air travel etiquette called Planeguage. Frequent fliers will find them all too humorous. Those that fly less regularly will enjoy the travel tips.

Mac King Is Everywhere – If you’ve been to Applebees during this season and had kids with you, odds are they were handed a “Holiday Hocus Pocus” with crayons and a little color book with simply magic tricks kids can do. Your local Applebees may still be handing them out. Give them a call and take the kids!

He’s also put out a couple of cool products perfect for kids (of all ages) who want to have fun with magic. Mac King’s Great Big Book-o-Magic contains over 50 very cool (and mystifying) tricks that are easy to learn and available at Barnes and Noble (stores or online). Also available is his Magic In A Minute Truck-o-Tricks with monkeys, cards, balls, strings and other props, jokes, and gags. Available at toy stores nationwide or Mac King Magic Shop. We just may be giving some sets out in the near future.

Also, you can’t go wrong checking out Mac’s afternoon show at Harrah’s. By far the best bargain and a show everyone will enjoy. Check out Mac King Tickets

New Las Vegas Photo Sets – We took a trip down Las Vegas Blvd. South recently. And we mean South. Starting at the west side of the airport at the Las Vegas sign… and heading SOUTH. Everyone is watching the massive construction on The Strip, but the next wave of resorts, gaming, and development is already in planning and progress. Get a good look now. It won’t look like this much longer. (Click photo for complete photo set)

We also added a few photo to reflect the remodeling and upgrades at the Golden Nugget. (Warning… these were taken in early fall when the weather was still very warm. Don’t bring your swimsuit this time of year).

Passing along a couple of “must know” tips…

  • Skip the casino ATM fees. You know that pulling money out of a casino ATM is obnoxiously expensive. Fees for casino ATM’s are approaching $5, then your bank hits you for another few bucks.The solution? Buy something negligible at one of the drug stores along The Strip and use your ATM debit card to get cash back. A pack of gum or bottle of water will cost around a dollar (cheaper than any ATM fee) and most stores will give you up to $100 cash back. This also may work at the many independent sundry/liquor stores. We haven’t tried it yet at hotel gift shops, but never hurts to ask if they will give you cash back with a debit card.

    Do all fellow readers a favor: If you find a certain hotel gift shop or independent sundry store on The Strip or Downtown that lets you use your debit for cash back, drop us a line at allvegastv@aol.com and we’ll start creating a list for all members to access.

  • Avoid the car rental traffic jam. The new car rental facility guides everyone out of the building and sends them south on Gilespie, west on Warm Springs, then north on Las Vegas Blvd. The problem? An almost constant traffic jam once you turn on to Las Vegas Blvd. because you are just south of where it intersects with our Beltway freeway and a major shopping area.Simple solution? Make a left turn out of the car rental lot. Take that road (Gilespie) north until it ends at Sunset. A quick left (west) on Sunset leads to Las Vegas Blvd. and you just zoomed past the entire traffic mess. Google map of suggested route. You’ll save yourself 10-15 minutes. We know. We use this shortcut all the time doing our local business in the area.

Thanks for the great photos! I saved them for the end of the year because losing The Stardust was certainly a big story of 2007. Also, a good reminder for people coming during the winter: It is sunny almost every day here, but not always warm. Average highs for January are 57 degrees, but average is the key word. As this newsletter goes out, we are facing 2-3 days where the low will be around freezing.

(Note to self… dig out really warm coat). Bring on summer… I so hate the cold…

Well I never made it to Vegas this past weekend. My daughter was sick and I felt I couldn’t leave her, but she’s fine now and it wasn’t serious. I have to say that South Point was great in that they didn’t charge me the requisite 1 night cancellation fee. The rest of the group went so I thought I’d let you know their reviews. They had good things to say about the hotel.The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and check in was no problem. They had reserved King beds and were given double beds but when they called the desk, she promptly found them rooms with Kings and also all on the same floor next to each other. The rooms were spotless, and huge. The casino wasn’t smoky and the pool was good. The only complaint about the pool was it could’ve been a little more secluded. Maybe more lush greenery(ala Mirage pool). The Del-Mar Deli was good and the breakfast buffet was good…especially at $6 with the discount coupon.

The liquor store on-site was a hit with reasonable prices. There is construction going on but the men in the group actually enjoyed watching the crane doing it’s thing while they had cocktail in hand by the pool. They used the shuttle to and from Mandalay Bay frequently, but the complaint was that it stopped running too early. They got tickets to Love. 2 from the group thought it was absolutely the best show they’ve ever seen, the other 4 thought it was just good…not being huge Beatles fans and there was also a 45 minute delay due to technical difficulties.

They did a Red Rock Jeep tour which they all enjoyed. They had dinner buffets at the Mirage and Bellagio with Bellagio getting a slightly better review than the Mirage based on food quality. Dinner at Canaletto at the Venetian was just OK…the food and also a less than pleasant waitress. However, they thought the surroundings were great, along with the gondola ride they took. They spent a little time in the bar at Kahunaville which they thought was fun. And one person won $250 on a slot machine at Bellagio with a $5 chip they found on the floor. So overall they had a good time with lots of laughs -and I was home wishing I was there.

So, thank you for all your info, and I will be checking out the newsletters and planning my trip whenever that may be…hopefully sooner rather than later. Take care!

As our daughter is in Graduate School at UNLV, my wife and I (we live in San Diego) consider Las Vegas our second home (Love Las Vegas and the people). Having mentioned that, I would like your help.I have a birthday coming up and will be in town to celebrate. I have been looking at many of the hotels gift shops for a embroidered black silk jacket or something else, that has the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign that is on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Heck of a question. I’m not sure I’ve seen one. The Las Vegas sign isn’t trademarked, so anyone can use it or variations of it. The hotels pretty much want to sell only stuff with their name on it. When in town, I’d check the Bonanza Gift Shop… it is huge. You might find something there.

Also, you may try Ebay. Try a search for

las vegas jacket

or similar.

The fireworks are set, the concerts ready to roll, and the nightclubs all trying to top each other. The theme is “The Best Is Yet To Come” and the fireworks show will reach from the MGM Grand to The Stratosphere with an display lasting more than eight minutes! (As always, sustained winds at the top of the hotels could put a damper on the display, but so far it has always gone off).

We say goodbye and a big Thank You to Celine Dion. Her five year run just wrapped up at Caesars, lasting far longer than originally anticipated. 3 million people saw the 717 shows. Whether you love or loathe her, no one can deny the amazing track record (4000 seats nightly) for a single headliner in the modern Las Vegas era.

Hannah Montana Hits Las Vegas – With Las Vegas now having more than two million residents, Miley “Hanna Montana” Cyrus’ two tour dates here sold out in a matter of minutes. A third date was added, and sold out immediately. Vegas On TV – The Las Vegas Bowl (Tickets) airs on ESPN at 5:00 PM Pacific Time on December 22, 2007 with BYU looking for revenge over a struggling UCLA team. Again this year, NBC’s Holiday On Ice airs on Christmas Day (check local NBC listings). The event was taped a couple of weeks ago at The Orleans.

Goodbye Sweet Louie – Checkmates singer Marvin “Sweet Louie” Smith passed away last week while performing aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. If you have visited Las Vegas for more than a few times, you probably saw The Checkmates performing somewhere. It would be easier to list the places they didn’t play over the decades!

The past few years they alternated between The Sahara, Casino Montelago (Lake Las Vegas) and Arizona Charlies East. Sweet Louie was fond of saying that every night was a Saturday night when they were performing, and I saw them light up more than one casino lounge over the years. Lance Burton & Friends Entertain At Zelzah Shrine Temple Christmas Party For Kids – Lance Burton (Tickets) finished up “The Vanishing Birdcage” at the Zelzah Shrine Temple for over 300 children on Sunday, Dec. 9. The Shriners invited the children’s families for a Sunday brunch and their annual show. This tradition began with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in the early 1950s. Special Guest Star Michael Goudeau entertained at the show for The Shriners’ clients. The comedy-juggler Goudau has performed with Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo since it opened in 1996. Gabriella Versace sang a couple of Christmas songs and comedian Magician Fielding West also performed his act at the event.
