Book online or over the phone! Call (toll free) 800-696-5721 to book all Las Vegas hotels, shows, tours, golf, and dining.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve been playing hooky on getting the newsletter out. I’d like to tell you we’ve been around the pool relaxing, but actually we are hard at work on the next version of AccessVegas.Com.

Even more information, new look, better navigation, tons of contests and giveaways, and an expanded improved members section (still and always free). Should debut in January! If you have any suggestions you would like incorporated, please drop us a line: allvegastv@aol.com

Thanksgiving Weekend – is Nov. 27 – 30. Almost all of the hotel restaurants from the buffets to the fine dining houses host a Thanksgiving menu, and the town is full of people taking advantage of a four day weekend. Many get their family and friends all together to meet in Las Vegas! Check room rates now.

Coming Concerts and Headliners – Lots and lots of great entertainment on the way. Book now online to lock up the best available tickets or call 800-696-5721 to book all Las Vegas hotels, shows, tours, golf, and dining:

Free Las Vegas Golf Lessons – and you can take them from anywhere in the world! We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. We’ll be posting a new lesson every week and reminding you here in the newsletter.

If you want to improve your game or just get a taste of Las Vegas golf, see the videos and learn more about Chris and The Revere at our Streaming Video Free Golf Lessons page. He is also available and highly recommended for private instruction.

X-Scream – thrill ride has opened on top of the Stratosphere Tower. X-Scream tilts you 30 feet over the edge as it plunges you toward the ground almost 1000 feet below! Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

New Year’s Eve Concerts – The list is getting longer and longer, and we are posting them as we get the news. Check out our December 2003 Entertainment Calendar. What … you don’t know how hot New Year’s Eve is here in Las Vegas? We have the insider tips, and plenty of free photos and streaming video from past years on our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve site!

Veterens Eat Free McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. Veterens ID or discharge papers required. You can reserve ahead at 702-836-9000. McCormick & Schmick’s is a fine dining restaurant. Watch Executive Chef John Botkin prepare one of their famous dishes and take a peek via streaming video: Dial-Up or Broadband

Top Restaurants – Michael Politz, publisher of Food and Beverage Magazine recently appeared on Extra TV, highlighting some of the great restaurants of Las Vegas. Click to watch.

New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the Ambassador Strip Travelodge. Who? What? A Motel 6???

No … no, no, no! Set against the MGM and Tropicana hotels, this inn is a couple minute walk from The Strip, free airport and convention shuttle, complimentary continental breakfast, and even wireless broadband around the pool. Check out a fun, humorous look this property for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

á See the Grand Canyon in a Jet Helicopter! For years Maverick Helicopters has been providing a true VIP Helicopter experience of the Grand Canyon. We do things a little different than any other helicopter Company. We give you an adventure of a lifetime and not just another tour of the Grand Canyon. Las Vegas Strip tours plus Helicopter Weddings also available!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I was one of the privileged guests at a gaming writer’s party put on by Compton-Dancer Consulting this past week. What made it special? This exclusive event was held in the Sky Villa’s of the Las Vegas Hilton. Yes, the same ones you have seen on the Travel Channel.

No, they aren’t as nice as they look on TV. They are 20 times nicer! Mind-bendingly luxurious almost beyond earthly compare. I understand you can stay there is you have close to $20,000 a night, or a few million to gamble.

Great writers with great books that I met and can recommend first hand:

Hello AOL Users! – If you use AOL, you haven’t seen us for a few months (or not at all if you’ve signed up the past few months). In AOL’s quest to block spam, they blocked the vast majority of email newsletters, across the board.

Our biggest complaint the past five months? AOL subscribers saying “I’m not getting your newsletter anymore.” Once we found this out, we applied for accepted status. They were great about getting it taken care of, and we are thrilled to see so many new and old friends again.

What is a Scinta? – Only one of the longer running acts in town now! And with good reason: This family act is a must-see. In fact, see a streaming preview for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

New Year’s Eve – From last week, many asked about what various organized events happen for New Year’s Eve. We’ll start receiving that info soon, and let you know. The “big” party is actually in the middle of The Strip, totally closed to traffic as a four mile long fireworks display goes off! We have the scoop at Las Vegas New Year’s Eve. Vegas Nights Helicopter Flight

Maverick Helicopter Vegas Strip – I recently took the opportunity to ride with Maverick Helicopters for one of their stunning night tours over The Las Vegas Strip. On board were a small group of great people from all over, two of whom were celebrating their second anniversary!

Don’t wait for a special occasion to try this out. Even though I live here, and am pretty jaded to the brightly lit strip, my jaw drops on this ride.

This isn’t like being on top of the Stratosphere, or craning your neck toward the airplane window as you fly in. The wrap-around windows of the helicopter give every rider a spectacular, unparalleled view of our beautiful Las Vegas Strip.

The ride takes you all the way: From the very bottom of The Strip (south of Mandalay Bay), past the Stratosphere, to the Fremont St. Experience experience downtown and over the light show and hotels of “Old Vegas.” You fly about 1000 feet off the ground, high enough to see everything smoothly move before your eyes but close enough to enjoy the details.

As you move past all of the brightly lit hotels and the beauty of their entire properties, the odds are you’ll catch the Mirage Volcano, Bellagio Fountains and maybe even the Fremont St. Light Show … from overhead!

Worried about heights? This isn’t a thrill ride, nor designed to be one. Maverick has a perfect safety record, the best helicopters, and most experienced (but informative and fun) pilots. Leather seats, heat and air, elbow room, and a wrap around vista make this a highlight of your trip.

Beware; some companies sell discounted Strip helicopter tours and they basically take you up in a small circle and you are done before it started. You get what you pay for, and Maverick gives you your money’s worth. Whether a first time visitor, your “once in a lifetime” Vegas trip, or you drive in every month, this should be a “must do” on your next trip.

Reserve early. This popular sightseeing flight can fill up well in advance.

I’m so excited! 2 girlfriends and I are coming to Vegas and staying at the MGM Grand for a week! We are flying from Michigan. I have done quite a bit of online research, but sometimes it’s nice to get REAL opinions from people on what to do, etc.

We’ll gamble some, but really want to take in a show or two and tour the hotels, etc. We look forward to putting the diets aside and just living it up. I want to dance ’till my socks melt! Any tips for 3 women who want to burn the candle at both ends, swim and sun, see the sights and live it up?? Thanks!

We have quite the active discussion going on in our Coming to VEGAS for the first time thread in the forums. Co’mon ladies … spill the dirt for her. If you come to Las Vegas for “girls night out” or that bachelorette party, this is the place to talk about it.

When you register for the boards, we even keep your email private. (People can email you only through our system — we don’t post your actual email address). Past that, you are anonymous and choose whatever “screen name” you want!

I have been receiving your newsletter for several years now and I find it to be very informative. My husband and I travel to Las Vegas twice a year and I am always prints bits and pieces of the letter. Even though we have been traveling there for seven years … the info in the news letter always comes in handy.

Thanks for the kind words. One of the great things about the internet is the ability to hit the print button! I do the very same when I travel, even bringing the pages on the plane with me to review activities and get all pumped up for the trip.

If you check out our main AccessVegas.Com page, you will see we have a new site design which will soon encompass every page of our site. One of the key factors with this redesign is that is is both more “printer friendly” and WebTV friendly.

My wife and I have just returned to England after our 4th visit to Las Vegas in the last 5 years and I thought you may be interested in our opinions of some of the restaurants we visited this time.

He went on to write a great dining related trip report detailing Bootlegger Bistro, Sahara Sunday Champagne Brunch, Postrio (in The Venetian), Mon Ami Gabi (at Paris Las Vegas), Red Square at (Mandalay Bay), and the Rosewood Grille. Well worth the read. If you have visited any of the above, be sure to share your thoughts (agree or disagree).

In the same vein, the famed Robb Report (high end lifestyle publication) recently named Las Vegas “America’s most exquisite dining destination.” We, along with partners ChefLive.Com are looking at launching a monthly newsletter devoted to Las Vegas dining and we’ll keep you abreast. I have no problem with other people smoking, and I know it is part of the gambling seen, but I myself prefer not to play where the smoke is so thick that I smell like smoke after 3 showers. Here on the east coast the only thing I can find is a few sets of machines and/or tables with a no smoking sign, but the neighbor tables and machines are for smokers. Does anybody know of any strip casinos (even off strip) where there is a legitimate nonsmoking area? Thanks!

Now that neighboring state California and many cities in the U.S. have outlawed smoking in public indoor places, some non-smokers are becoming increasingly aware that Las Vegas is a “smoke ’em if you got ’em” state. The newer hotels with their high ceilings and state-of-the-art ventilation have done a pretty good job at combating this issue. If you patronize a Las Vegas hotel because of their cleaner air or dedicated non-smoking section, share your thoughts about Non-Smoking Gaming.

I have read many reviews about the Imperial Palace – mostly bad. I am planning a trip to Vegas in May. I have stayed at the Flamingo Hilton and understand it is not that caliber. I am interested in an affordable hotel, AND CLEAN, ESPECIALLY THE BATHROOM AND CARPET. Please Advise.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Imperial Palace is basically a Motel 6 (slightly better) caliber rooms with an incredible location at a very reasonable price. Many come to Las Vegas and only see their room when they are sleeping so they don’t care.

You are almost asking the impossible because hotels have cleaning and renovation schedules and you may be put in a room that was just gone over, or one that is wearing a bit. A basic rule of thumb is that you get what you pay for. They don’t call it Caesars Palace for nothing! No matter where you stay, always avail yourself of the opportunity to complain if you feel your room has issues with cleanliness.

Message Board Member “patsy” wrote:

I am planning a trip to Vegas. And we are planning on staying at the Boardwalk Hotel. How is this Hotel??

Like the Imperial Palace, the Boardwalk has a great location and reasonably modest prices, a lower limit gaming, and plenty of free lounge entertainment. If you have stayed there, help Patsy (and all the other readers) by posting the good or the bad of Boardwalk and other hotels on our Las Vegas Strip Hotels board. This is your chance to make your voice heard!

Message Board Member “poolplayer” wrote:

I’ve heard a lot about the Green Valley Ranch, one of the new hotels in Las Vegas. But can’t seem to find it on the map. I know its off the strip aways and was wondering how to get there. Do they have a trolley or is a cab ride in our future???

You are looking at a cab ride. Better yet, rent a car for the day (or your stay) as the cab ride round trip will run you what a day of rental car will cost. Las Vegas is thought to be The Strip surrounded by a few dumpy apartments and the desert, but in reality 1.5 million people live in the Las Vegas area and it is quite spread out.

Green Valley is one of the nicer parts of town, located 10+ miles southeast of The Strip. For those with a car, you can find Green Valley Ranch by heading south on The Strip past Mandalay Bay, past the Las Vegas sign, and to the “beltway”, also known as 215. Head east on the beltway (freeway) for about 6 miles and you can’t miss Green Valley Ranch to the right. Take the next exit called “Green Valley Parkway.”

If you have visited or stayed at Green Valley Ranch, give us your thoughts in our Green Valley Ranch forum.

Richie wrote:

Well Ted, here’s and idea to check the mileage of those rip off taxi drivers out there.. and save the passenger money. I do this when ever I go on a trip… go to Mapquest before your trip and put in the address values of where you are going to go, to and from. Print them along with turn by turn directions, then bring them with you and tell the taxi driver to follow these directions on the route, exactly. The print out also gives the precise mileage of each destination figured.

THIS ISSUE: The State of Las Vegas Tourism

EDITOR’S NOTES: Fall is the season for change, and we are changing this newsletter from a comprehensive weekly to a monthly digest version starting next issue. This isn’t due to the temporary slump in tourism or any failure. Quite the contrary: Las Vegas visitor numbers are already back to normal. We personally took a hit last month but it wasn’t bad. (We’ll discuss the layoffs, rumors, cheap room prices and such in this week’s feature article).

The simple fact is that I’m a “victim” of my own success! When I started this in May of 1999, I just had the http://www.accessvegas.com site and the weekly newsletter was my main outlet for news and reviews. Now that I have expanded to publishing a number of sites, pretty much all the information published here is available on one of them. I can’t continue my responsibilities of building, updating, and expanding them and also find the 15-20 hours a week this has been taking unless I continue working 7 day weeks (which has taken a toll).

Let me outline where your favorite parts of this newsletter are available online:

Las Vegas News: Every single day, http://www.accessvegas.com is updated with the latest Las Vegas news. Make it your start page or at least bookmark it (add it to favorites).

Editors Notes: I’m renaming these “Newkirk’s Notes” and they will continue to be a part of the newsletter. In fact, I’ll be able to spend a little more time than before commenting on the latest Las Vegas news, rumor, taking more stabs at our lousy cab drivers, and giving you my outspoken commentary that you won’t read in those glossy tourism magazines.

Concerts, Shows, Events: We have already moved most of these listings online as linked from the newsletter. To fill in any gaps, we will soon start a “Press Pass” page where we’ll be posting many of the weekly press releases get. This page will be free. The newsletter space was limited, forcing me to pick and choose what to include. We want to make more info available to those interested.

Reviews: We have a comprehensive selection of reviews at http://www.las-vegas-shows-reviews.com now, and we’ll continue to add to them on a monthly basis. We’ll note the additions each month’s newsletter, but if you can’t wait you can scroll down toward the bottom of that page, enter your email address, and be sent a note every time we add a new review!

Feedback: I never had enough room to print all of the great feedback, which was a shame because your comments when you return from Las Vegas are a huge help to those getting ready to visit. That prompted me to build the Comment Las Vegas site at http://boards.accessvegas.com

It is a great place to share your thoughts and (providing you stay on topic and don’t post anything in bad taste) you are guaranteed that tens of thousands will enjoy your comments over time. I’ll still be here via email to answer specific questions — just hit reply anytime you have a question that needs a personal reply. Unless out of town, I should be able to get back to you promptly.

So what will be in the monthly newsletter? We’ll let you know about the big coming events, highlight the new content we put online, have specials, giveaways, and a lot of fun. In fact, the very grind of getting this out weekly in the past took away the time I needed to make the phone calls and cut the deals so I could offer better specials and giveaways. I’ll be on the horn the next few weeks setting stuff up!

Speaking of …

VEGAS SPECIAL: Las Vegas MGM Grand from $75.95, Sun. – Thurs., Now – 10/31/01: http://www.accessvegas.com/vegas-special.htm

One more very important note: If you have installed About.Com Bar, NetZero, or Kazaa, you very may have unknowingly installed a virus-like spyware program that overwrites web pages with extra links that webmasters like myself did not place and have no control over (and are certainly not endorsed by us). If you have, details about this virus-like program and info on getting rid of it are at http://www.scumware.com

NEWKIRK’S NOTES: The State of Las Vegas Tourism

Las Vegas is just about back to normal. N-O-R-M-A-L. Hotel occupancy rates are normal. The amount of air traffic in and out of town is just a hair off, but normal for all intents and purposes. The only “abnormal” thing are lower than usual room rates. With sunny weather in the 80’s, hotels often get top dollar for rooms during the fall. Those in town the past few weeks can attest to enjoying our beautiful fall weather at summer prices (the “low” season because of the heat).

I can already read your mind. You are thinking “This guy is a PR idiot who is full of crap — I keep reading about how hard Vegas has been hit, about the hotel layoffs, and how nobody is traveling.” Longtime readers know I base my reputation on the facts, but I’ll still be happy to defend my statements.

Things were indeed rough for a short period of time. The first week after the attacks was bad. The only other time the Strip is that empty is the week before Christmas. The second week was still rough, but the slashed rates started to attract people and business climbed quite a bit. By the third week, things were getting pretty close to normal and now are back to normal.

Remember, 1/5 of the population of the United States lives within a long days drive of Las Vegas, and most of those are in Southern California or Arizona, just a few hours away. We saw the same thing happen that we experience during a recession: People from other parts of the country (and the world) who opt to vacation closer to home (or skip a vacation) are replaced by drive-ins who had to skip the trip to Hawaii or Mexican Cruise due to cost, and jumped in the car for Las Vegas instead.

Yes, The hotels are hurting a bit. They are filling their rooms but the cut rates are attracting the bargain travelers who gamble much less, don’t go to shows, and don’t eat at the high end restaurants. If you enjoyed the “old” Las Vegas where you could get a $50 room on the Strip and see low limits even on the weekends, the past month was the time to be here. If you enjoy the fine dining and higher-end shows, you will find much shorter lines and more ticket availability.

So what about the layoffs? Just clearing out the dead wood. The hotels have always supposedly had a great relationship with the main union that most of the employees at the major hotels are affiliated with. I say supposedly because let’s face it … when management has a gun to their head to pay $18 an hour to somebody they could otherwise hire for $15, they can’t be truly happy. On the other hand, they don’t want to risk a huge labor problem. Shutting down much of Las Vegas’ tourism would be more damaging (in the long run) than the Sept. 11 events.

After business plummeted, the hotels went to the union and said “We can either work everyone 32 hours a week, or we can do layoffs.” The union contract dictates that full time workers must get 40 hours a week and the union didn’t budge. Hence, the layoffs. Two weeks later, the union came back to the table and said “We’ll go for the 32 hour weeks to get everybody back to work” and the hotels said “Too late — we offered that and you said no — we already did the layoffs and reorganized.”

Does it sound like I’m siding a bit with management? Perhaps. Why? Because I am very upset about the rising complaints of poor service that I get from you and the visitors to my websites. Too many hotel employees are taking you for granted. I have personally overheard hotel employees chat in local watering holes about customers.

An example: a slot floor attendant (the guy who brings machine fills and pays jackpots) was complaining that a lady didn’t tip him very much when she hit a jackpot. I politely asked him why someone should be required to tip when hitting a jackpot in a situation the odds are against them and they have probably lost more than that jackpot on her visit. He said “I only make $12 an hour (plus benefits) and so I need the tips, and besides … if a customer wants to make sure we are quick with the machine fills and the jackpot payoffs, we remember who the tippers are and aren’t.”

On another occasion, I heard a bartender complaining that someone hit a Royal Flush at his bar ($1000) and only tipped him $20. Granted, $12 an hour isn’t an executive wage, but we are talking a job requiring very little skill. And yet this is how all too many people look at you visitors — punishing you if you don’t cough up a gratuity that meets their expectations.

Let me interject that I believe in tipping in the appropriate situations and I am a generous tipper. In the case of bartenders, it is customary to tip per round whether you are paying for a drink or getting it “comped” (free) because you are playing.

But many slot attendants and bartenders (I kid you not) believe and expect that they should get a 10% tip on any hand pay jackpot and anything less than that, they sniff at. Do they remember that you may be down hundreds or thousands of dollars for the trip and this win doesn’t even bring you even? That $20 was more than he bad before!

It is unfortunate that the layoffs were arbitrary (done on seniority instead of merit in most cases), but in the long run I believe this will be good for you, the Las Vegas visitor. The workers have had a harsh reminder that their jobs are only there because YOU come to town. No visitors = no jobs.

Too many people have moved to town hearing about the good wages for regular jobs with no attachment or commitment to the community or understanding that their great new job is 100% dependent on you visitors. If you are a local who fits that category, I have a message for you: The rest of us are living here because we love Las Vegas, and those of us who are selling the rooms so you have people to service (and thus a job) are tired of you taking our customers for granted.

THIS ISSUE: Harley-Davidson Cafe

EDITOR’S NOTES: We’ll be somewhat back to “normal” this week, although the letters section will feature notes I received regarding the tragedy. I want to encourage you to take advantage of the lower hotel rates and the opportunity to go about your business and show that we won’t be put in fear of our way of life.

Hotel rates are down. The lines at vacation destinations are shorter, the traffic isn’t bad. In fact, I’m going to put my money where my mouth is: We are going to give $1 to the Red Cross for every room night you readers book now through Sept. 26, 2001. No catch, you still get to take advantage of our rebate spectacular, and the guaranteed low rates! Full details at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm

It doesn’t even have to be Las Vegas. It can be any one of the 150+ cities we book. Worried about getting a flight (or don’t want to fly)? Drive to Atlantic City, Biloxi, Charleston, Florida (Space Coast, West Palm, Lauderdale, Miami, The Keys, Ft. Myers, or Panama City Beach), Gatlinburg, Hilton Head, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, Williamsburg, or Yellowstone (just to mention a few).

Why are we doing this? We feel terrible for the thousands of lives lost in the World Trade Center tragedy. We also feel for the tens of thousands in the hospitality and travel industry who have been laid off. These are hard working people just like you and I, many with families to feed. If you need to get away for the weekend, week, or were thinking about booking a trip for later this year, this is the time to get great rates and show you support at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm

FEATURE STORY: Harley-Davidson Cafe

While coincidence, it seem fitting to be talking about a restaurant which commemorates a legendary American product and has a decidedly patriotic theme and red, white, and blue decor.

This is one of the more successful theme eateries in Las Vegas. Country Star Cafe, Dive!, Race Rock and All Star Cafe have bit the dust (although Race Rock might be temporarily closed), and word is still out on the new ESPN Zone but the huge 28 foot high, $500,000 Harley replica above the door as well as the prime lower-Strip location make them hard to miss.

Whether the restaurant lasts 100 years like the famous motorcycles have remain to be seen, but if you are a biker, weekend biker, or just have a “good ole’ boy” love of the US or things related to it, pop your head in the door for a spell.

Memorabilia includes seven Harley-Davidson Motorcycles displayed hanging from a conveyor belt winding its way through every area of the Cafe. On one wall is a 40′ x 40 American Flag, made from 44,000 chain links and weighing over 7 tons. A theme restaurant must have that celebrity connection, and the Cafe has famous bikes on display which include “Captain America” from the movie Easy Rider as well as Harley motorcycles and memorabilia from celebrities such as Elvis, Ann-Margret, and Billy Joel.

This is a themed restaurant which means the emphasis is more on memoribilia and surroundings (read: the food isn’t bargain-priced but has really cutsy names). However, the quality was good and they don’t skimp on the portions. My only complaint was that everything seemed a little on the salty side, but not terribly so.

They have a very complete menu, and house specialties include:

The Harley Hog Sandwich: Carolina pulled pork sandwich with French fries and Coleslaw $10.25

Chicken Pot Pie: Chicken and vegetables topped with a pastry crust $13.50

Homestyle Meatloaf: With broccoli, mashed potatoes and brown gravy $11.25

Kellogg’s CornFlake Coated Chicken Fingers: Chicken tenders served with your choice of Original, Honey-BBQ or Buffalo Style sauce $7.50

BBQ Baby Back Ribs: House-smoked ribs with baked beans and cole slaw $19.95

Vegetarian Wrap Sandwich: Grilled and roasted carrots, zucchini and yellow squash, with a basil pesto, wrapped in a spinach tortilla. Served with seasonal fruit $8.75

Georgia House Salad: Assorted lettuces with bacon, chunks of blue cheese and candied pecans with a vinaigrette dressing $8.95

Warm Chocolate Chip Toll House Cookie Pie: With vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate syrup $5.95

Tank full of Sundae: served with three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream, a whole banana, lotsa fixins’ and your choice of hot chocolate or butterscotch $7.95

The Harley-Davidson Cafe is located between The Aladdin and MGM, across from Holiday Inn Boardwalk on the lower Strip. They open at 11:00 AM daily, closing at 11:00 PM on weeknights and midnight on Sunday. Their number is (702) 740-4555 and they accept all major credit cards.

I hope most US citizens share your view and show their support for our economy by getting out and traveling again. EDITOR NOTES:

I was expecting a bigger negative response to last week’s “tell it like it is” articles on the pitfalls of playing for comps and gambling with slot club cards (which focus you on points, not how much more you are losing to “earn” points).

Out of 16,000+ subscribers, only two (2) wrote in and said that they use their club card and break even or end up ahead every year when they factor in the freebies. I thought that number would be just a little higher, but further shows that playing to “earn” comps isn’t a way to beat Las Vegas.

Yes, our city on sale (above) for the third straight week is Las Vegas. Our hotel partner HRN decides each week’s city, and for some reason they have left Las Vegas specials running for three weeks now. If you were debating, I’d take advantage of the specials now. I can’t guarantee we will have Las Vegas specials another week.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

HOTEL FIRE – This just in: The Gold Spike Hotel Casino downtown (a cheap, rundown place downtown near Lady Luck) caught fire about 11 AM this morning. Seventeen were hurt attempting to get out, but none of the injuries were serious. The damage was confined to one room where a man and woman first reported their mattress on fire. Because of the 1980 fire at Bally’s (then the MGM Grand), Clark County (Las Vegas) now has some of the most stringent hotel fire safety codes in the world.

NEW LOUNGES – Caesars Palace and Paris Las Vegas have both jumped into the fray created by the success of V-Bar at Venetian (which we reported on a few weeks ago). Can anyone say “Bond … James Bond”? That seems to be the feel and era they are both working to recreate. Paris Las Vegas has opened Vamp from 10 PM – 4 AM on weekend nights. Vamp promises visually stimulating fashion, pulsating laser light spectrum and stylish, vogue lounge dancers with a cover of $15.

Caesars has Shadow, featuring contemporary designs with eclectic furnishings. What will stand out is the constant presence of provocative Shadow concierges. Visible only through a sheer scim screen, these multiple silhouette dancers will perform choreographed dance routines to original music and the mingle with the guests acting as lounge hostesses when not dancing. Shadow will be open 24/7 with the dancers in attendance evenings. Cover (if any) was not disclosed.

WORLD SERIES OF POKER – has been over for a couple of weeks now, but I found a good article giving a firsthand rundown of the yearly Las Vegas spectacle at http://www.freep.com/news/casinos/gam25_20010525.htm

PORN HANDBILLS – The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in a mixed opinion Thursday that The Mirage and Treasure Island are entitled to restrict the distribution of sexually oriented handbills on their sidewalks though they are used by the public. This is another step in the long fight between the resorts and the companies who pass out the handbills. The handbill companies claim free speech while the resorts suggest they have certain rights to the areas that front their properties. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-18-Fri-2001/news/16124818.html

SUMMER IS HERE – With the temperatures generally climbing, we can’t stress enough the importance of drinking plenty of water while out there. Because of the very low humidity, you perspire greatly but don’t realize it because it evaporates off of your body immediately. Drinking booze dehydrates you further. Either way, we suggest stopping by the hotel bars on a regular basis and grabbing a bottled water. Your body will thank you, your stamina will by higher, and you’ll enjoy your vacation a lot more.

KIDS QUEST – The new Palms Hotel Casino (under construction near The Rio) is going to have a child care center. These centers are already popular at some “local’s” casinos around town. Story at http://twincities.bcentral.com/twincities/stories/2001/05/07/daily25.html

SOUTH STRIP – Recently, a continuing series on urban hikes in Las Vegas focuses on the Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and Four Seasons hotels. Included are good synopses of the attractions at each and worth printing out before you next trip. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/May-13-Sun-2001/living/16040904.html

HARRAH’S – scored a number of wins in the recent “Best of Las Vegas” put out by the Review-Journal. Clint Holmes (read our archived review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/01-02-21.htm ) was voted “Best Singer,” “Best All-around Las Vegas Performer,” and “Favorite Male Las Vegan.” He has also been inducted into the Casino Legends Hall of Fame at the Tropicana (Hall of Fame review at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-09-15.htm ).

Additionally, The Improv was voted “Best Comedy Club” and the Carnival Court was voted “Best Lounge.” The Carnival Court is definitely one of the more fun stops to party on the Strip, especially on weekend evenings when they have live blackjack outdoors to compliment the festive surroundings and live music. Discount Harrah’s rooms at hhttp://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Harrah’s link).

$100 REBATE SPECTACULAR! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you up to $100 back on any stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. FEATURE STORIES: Andre-Philippe Gagnon

The lights went down, and Mick Jagger hit the stage. Almost. Andre-Philippe Gagnon, “the man of a thousand voices” hit the stage backed by a tight four piece band and did a dead-on impression (both physically and vocally) of the Stones lead singer.

Gagnon is part impressionist and all comedian. With a repertoire of hundreds of voices from Sinatra to Axl Rose, from Sting to Barry White, he shows extreme versatility during the 75 minute show. After Jagger, he establishes his talent by rolling through Lou Rawls, Julio and Willie (in duet), and Tom Jones among others.

Then comes “Bill: The Musical” which is a hilarious multi-act “play” based on the Clinton / Lewinsky saga. Songs by Sting, Louis Prima, Barry White, and Marvin Gaye are twisted lyrically to make a nonpartisan comedic set that had the audience breaking out in laughter a number of times.

Taking a swing at pop culture, he noted the Beatles songs now used in commercials and proceeded to give us other “what if” examples in a medley of Beatles songs turned to commercials. He then proceeded to do the same with varied artists such as James Brown, Joe Cocker, REM, Alice Cooper, The Oakridge Boys, and Dire Straits.

A Gagnon show is like being hit with rapid fire bullets. He weaves together verses of different songs, seldom even doing half a song by any one artist. What makes it work is his talent, blending flawlessly from both the voice and mannerisms of one performer to another. His band must receive serious credit themselves for the ability to jump from style to style to style and sound great.

He pulled out the big guns toward the close of the show. Lest one think that his talent is based strictly on working to mimic famous talents, he picked a random man out of the audience and had this man sing a few bars of a song. Gagnon then replicated the man dead-on … with not just the vocal quality (or lack thereof in this case) but the cadence. He then did a duet of the song with them man, moving the microphone back and forth between himself and this audience member every few words. With eyes closed, you couldn’t have told the difference.

He opened for Celine Dion in 1998 for her world tour, and she has a part in his show. Appearing via video screen, he sings a duet with her using not his own voice but Sinatra’s. The result was very impressive. There is one more surprise involving audience participation, but I’ll leave this impressive and hilarious bit a surprise. (No one in the audience is embarrassed or anything — have no fear).

It is not my job to get in the middle of the “video poker pro”
debates. (Right now, there is great controversy among “professional”
video poker players about which pro’s method for beating the machines
is better.) I assume people are smart enough to check his stuff out
and decide for themselves, and I’ve had links to a number of other VP
resources listed for years on my gambling page at
http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-gambling-online.htm

I merely used Mr. Singers comment as well as an article by a noted gaming writer to back up my point and I gave credit to both sources. I firmly believe that slot cards are a downfall to 99% of the players who use them. They get people focused on points, not their bankroll.

For every video pro out there who tells people how they can break even
or make a few bucks playing video poker (putting tens of thousands of
dollars a month through the machines, and factoring in their comps to
say they ended up ahead), there are hundreds of thousands of people
who get trapped into playing more than they planned.

The average visitor is here to party and have fun, and if I can help
them from going beyond their gambling budget I feel as though I’ve
done a good thing.

This Issue: Excalibur Tournament of Kings

Curious about a show, restaurant, or other Las Vegas attraction that looks fun? Let us review it for you first! Suggestions are always welcome at (click): mailto:allvegastv@aol.com

EDITORS NOTE: Running very late this week. I was out of town on family business 14 out of 24 days ending last Sunday, and you can imagine I had quite a bit of catching up to do — Las Vegas never sleeps and the news and entertainment never stops as we prepare for future issues. A highlight of the past week was attending the opening of Wolfgang Puck’s Cili Restaurant at the new Bali Hai Golf Course (1/2 mile south of Mandalay Bay). Both the restaurant and the course are spectacular. We sifted through a ton of great suggestions and have our $100 lodging contest winner this week also. You have one more week to vote in our poll, but it looks like most of you aren’t going to let a little downturn in the economy stop you from Vegas!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

LAS VEGAS CLASSIC – The Senior Tour hits Las Vegas this weekend, and our windy weather of late should make for some interesting play. CNBC will be airing the tournament. Story at http://www0.mercurycenter.com/premium/sports/docs/srcap19.htm

CBS – The television network is going to open a “Television City” inside the MGM. Two screening rooms with high-tech research computers will track audience reaction to possible new shows the network is thinking of running. No word yet as to how people will be chosen to participate. Story at http://news.excite.com/news/r/010418/15/media-cbs

ENERGY SURCHARGE – Harrah’s / Rio (same company) and all of Station Casino properties (everything that ends with the word Station but Main Street Station downtown which is owned by Boyd Gaming) have tacked a $3 per night energy surcharge effective immediately. Energy is a cost of doing business, and if it costs more perhaps hotels should raise the published rates. Story at http://www.azcentral.com/business/0419vegaspower19.html

HEALTHY DINING – can be found in Las Vegas, just not necessarily on The Strip. Restaurants ranging from health-oriented to vegan can now be found around the city. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Apr-18-Wed-2001/living/15865005.html

MORE HIGH END DINING – will be part of The Palms, a resort under construction across from The Rio. Of note will be AlizÚ, a rooftop restaurant by Andre Rochat, whose Andre’s French Restaurant in downtown Las Vegas is rated one of the city’s top high-end restaurants. Full story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Apr-18-Wed-2001/business/15895289.html

LAS VEGAS OUTLAWS – and the rest of the XFL say they will be back next season. They league has admitted to numerous startup mistakes including unusual camera angles, not using pure football announcers, and poor play early in the season stemming from lack of a preseason. This drove away some football fans and hurt Saturday night ratings expectations, although they also (duh) realized that their target audience of men 18-49 is usually out on Saturday evenings.

However, average league attendance was well above the expected 20,000 a game across the league and TNN and UPN were very satisfied with Sunday ratings. Las Vegas both sold the most season tickets and generated the highest ratings for the new league party because the flashy, loose style fits the city’s image and partly as our way of thumbing our nose at the refusal of major league teams to allow the city to have a team as long as sports betting is legal. Stories at http://www.msnbc.com/news/555566.asp?cp1=1 and http://www.latimes.com/sports/times/20010419/t000033233.html

HOT TALK RADIO – has returned to Las Vegas on 1140 AM KSFN. This marks the return of Don and Mike (Noon – 4 PM), Tom Leykis (4 PM – 8 PM and Midnight – 5 AM), and local favorites Johnson and Tofte (9 AM – Noon) as well as Loveline (10 PM – Midnight).

$25 HOTEL REBATE — you pick the hotel! Our partners at Hotel Reservations Network are giving you $25 back on any 2+ night stay in Las Vegas or any major city they reserve. Claiming your cash is simple:

1. Print out: http://www.accessvegas.com/100-rebate.htm
2. Book a room online at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-discounts.htm
3. Send in for your rebate when you get home.

It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you get their low price guarantee
to boot!

CONCERTS AND SHOWS:

RITA RUDNER – had a fantastic run at the MGM but had to clear out for a new show they are developing. She’s moved her act across the street to the New York – New York where her run starts on April 20. Story at http://news.excite.com/news/ap/010323/08/rita-rudner

“HAWAIIAN HOT LUAU” — Las Vegas’ only authentic poolside luau, celebrating it’s 10’th Anniversary, features a lavish buffet, unlimited Mai Tais, Pina Coladas and fruit punch, and a Polynesian revue by Rozita Lee’s “Drums of the Islands.” Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, weather permitting. FEATURE STORY: Excalibur Tournament of Kings

Las Vegas still has a dinner show on The Strip, but it is a little more WWF than watching some guy croon “My Way.” Tournament of Kings takes us back to medieval Europe with fire-wizards, dragons, invading armies, and jousting.

The arena is surrounded by four tiered rows each with table room in front of you, so there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Take note of the section you are sitting in, as that is the king that you will be rooting for. Be there on time as dinner is served, and be ready to “rough it” a little when it comes to eating.

Dinner starts with a tomato-style soup that you drink straight from the bowl as well as an unidentified soft drink in a big plastic mug. Then comes a platter with a game hen, broccoli, and a roll. Wash up first, as you are eating EVERYTHING with your hands. It’s not as bad as it sounds. Actually, it is fun to be a little piggy and really gets you in that “set back in time” mood that helps bring added enjoyment to the show.

This is a play-along show and we are taught how to cheer, when to drink a salute and we get to cheer for our “country” section as the full cast enters in marching procession. The kings have their “feast” at the round table as we are finishing ours and then on with the show.

The kings compete against each other in jousting and other medieval fighting skills in a tournament for our viewing pleasure. Both the actors and the horses they ride are obviously well trained in stunt work and put on a serious show. Some audience members get into it more than others, but you do best to forget your inhibitions (hey, you are in Vegas) and yell, chant, salute, drink, and cheer along.

As the winning king takes his victory lap, the evil wizard appears with his followers in flash, fire, and smoke provoking an all-out war between the kings and the evil ones. This is a lengthy, dramatic finale that ends in true fairy tale fashion with good winning out and the heroes getting the maiden of their choice.

This is truly an all-ages show. You can take the kids to it but there is plenty of fun for the adults. The actors all really convey the look of the period, costumes and effects are impressive, the horses well trained and beautiful, and the action very realistic considering it is viewed fairly close up. Considering the rising prices of Las Vegas shows and that this one includes dinner, it’s not a bad value either.

Excalibur Tournament of Kings plays every night at Excalibur. Tickets are $39.95 plus tax (cocktails extra if you choose) and showtimes are 6:00 and 8:30 PM. Reservations available at (702) 597-7600

The Stratosphere has the past couple of years and that is the only display on the Strip. A number of displays usually take place around the other areas of the city. If you are in town for the 4’th and have a car, grab the paper that morning and make your plans!

Hey, if I had a reader of the month award, you’d get it! I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but if people enjoy the information I send out each week, and if it helps you make the most of your very valuable few hours you have to spend each time you visit town, all I ask is that you compare our rates for your travel needs both here and other destinations.

We have aligned ourselves with the best companies out there, with the lowest rates and most secure reservations. Do I trust our travel partners? I use them myself!

$100 Suggestion Contest Winner – A couple weeks ago, we put $100 in lodging out there for the best suggestion for our sites. A big “thank you” to the great response and suggestions. We have already or will be implementing them including starting a page listing the big jackpots (as well as when and where jackpots have been hit) which many suggested. However, the winning suggestion is:

Quite a few made suggestions along this line, but Evelyn was the first and as per the rules we picked the winning suggestion than checked to see who is the first who made it.

While we do have the one message board that we note at the top of each newsletter, over the summer we are going to build a complete way for you to post comments about each hotel individually. Once again, thanks to all who entered!

THE PALMS – is the name of the new boutique hotel / casino going in across the street from The Rio. With a combination of trendy dance clubs and high end dining, they are looking to challenge The Hard Rock, The Rio, and Mandalay Bay as the “in” spot for the young, trendy crowd with deep pockets. BETTING BAN – Your US Senators and Congressmen are working on legislation to outlaw all betting on college sports (something only legal in the state of Nevada). They are doing this at the urging of the NCAA, who are absolutely positive that once legal college sports betting is killed, all college sports betting will cease to exist.

If you enjoy betting college sports under the safe, controlled atmosphere that Nevada provides, drop your US legislators a quick note letting them know you oppose the federal government telling Nevada what they can offer wagering on. MORE CASINOS – A Las Vegas legislator has proposed a bill that would allow Strip-area time share projects to have casinos, but knowledgeable sources say the bill will likely face opposition from the gaming industry. The hotel/casinos will probably oppose it, not wanting any competition. It would allow places like The Jockey Club and Polo Towers (among others) on The Strip to offer gaming.

The customer usually wins with more casino opportunities. Some of the best blackjack rules and loosest slots in the US are in Nevada because of competition. Story at http://www.hotel-online.com/Neo/News/2001_Mar_22/k.LVT.985328040.html

FEATURE STORY: Blue Man Group

If you are at Luxor in the evening and see people walking around covered in (what looks like) toilet paper, don’t assume they lost a fight in the restroom. They were just at Blue Man Group. While I hate to give away too much about shows like this, the finale is each night is a celebration that must single-handedly keep a paper mill in business.

Blue Man Group is theater, but not the kind you might expect. After success in New York, Boston, and Chicago this troop pulled out all the stops for Las Vegas, where the Luxor gave them twice as many seats to fill.

What is Blue Man Group? Space aliens from Nevada’s notorious Area 51 “secret” military base? Were the sent here to study us or overwhelm us? Perhaps a little of both.

Blue Man Group consists of three men in skullcaps and cobalt blue face (and head) paint which stays wet, giving them an eerie “alive from the inside out” look. They never speak. They do act and react.

The show is artistic and colorful, but in a very abstract way. It opens with them beating on drums as they squirt neon colored water on the other’s drum in amazement at the colorful splash.

From there, a simple game of catch is played across the stage, with one of the members tossing colored food objects at the other two for them to catch with their mouths. One of them paints a pretty canvas using colored fluid projected from his mouth, while the other creates a “sculpture” from the foodstuff and finishes this act with what is insightful commentary on modern art.

This progresses to more entertainment with food, where Cap’n Crunch cereal is consumed and crunched to the beat of the heavily rhythmic music performed by a live band. Not any band, mind you, but one that performs dressed in bright neon outfits far above the stage. The multitude of colors that make up the cereal blend with in with the constant color themes we continue to be exposed to.

The food theme is retained for one more segment that is the most comedic of the show. Imagine how someone who has never seen a twinkie before would get it out of the wrapper, let alone eat it. They seem mystified with each other and what they are doing, but that only serves to set the audience up. We get lulled into a mellow, curious, slightly comedic mindset — then our senses are attacked full force.

Fortunately, they balance this assault with more musical segments that rely on a multitude of instruments which it appears they have created. These are adaptations of age-old percussion instruments except that they are made from PVC pipe. They have become quite adept at playing these, and in conjunction with the live band they produce some great electric music. So much so, that their debut CD (the soundtrack to the Vegas show) was nominated for a Grammy this past year.

There is more drumming, more neon, more interesting interaction with the audience, and more bizarreness (in a good way), but I’ve held back to not ruin the fun. This is not your typical “sit there and watch someone sing and tell jokes show,” but it isn’t as off-the-wall (no pun intended) as De La Guarda.

If you are mildly adventurous, have your finger on the basics of the pop culture of the past couple of decades, and don’t mind being visually and sonically assaulted to a degree, this is a show you will not only tell your friends about, but want to come back and see again. Like a good movie, I can only imagine all I missed the first time around.

It is an all-ages show, but much of it would be lost on preteens and while containing no language or vile acts, the show might overwhelm children. The Grammy nominated soundtrack is available at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000038A2S/invegascom Click on the Blue Man link to hear free samples — “Rods and Cones” is my personal favorite!

EDITORS NOTE: Not since the “Kids in Vegas” (should you bring them or not) has a topic generated as much controversy. While space doesn’t allow me to print every letter, the ones below are a representative sample regarding the strong feelings on this topic. Because of that, I’m leaving the “Smoking in Casinos” poll up an extra week at http://www.accessvegas.com On another note, a sampling of readers were kind enough to share what activities they do to maximize romance in Las Vegas.LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:

I recently read an article on an airplane magazine noting that women enjoy and are more likely to indulge in room service. I’m not singling out women, and when I am tired and don’t want the hassle I enjoy ordering room service myself. But men take note — your lady might appreciate the pampered privacy of a quiet meal with you in your room!

Peppermill is across from Stardust (just up the street a couple hundred yards). It is indeed a special spot that is usually frequented by locals even though it has a Strip location.

Down toward the other end of the Strip, Polo Towers (behind and just down from the Harley Cafe) has a 19’th floor lounge open to the public with a great view after dark (otherwise the sun blinds the view). Not quite the atmosphere or Peppermill, but the view makes up for it. It is truly a local’s secret, as the lounge is rarely crowded. Free and worth checking out. Just head through the strip mall in front of the resort, head in, grab an elevator, and punch the top floor button.

I reviewed Delmonico at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-21.htm and agree wholeheartedly. To sum this all up, I think it’s tough NOT to have a romantic time in Las Vegas with so many fun things to do, elegant restaurants, and various vistas.

EDITORS NOTE: I’m doing some traveling this week, so I’m happy to present a guest review submitted by readers Russell and Gail Howard. Next week, the long awaited review of Blue Man Group. After that, WB Stage 16 Restaurant (if they ever get me their press kit — I like the place) and Excalibur Tournament of Kings. As always noted at the end of the “Letter’s To The Editor” section, guest reviews are gladly considered.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

V-BAR – at The Venetian continues to be a “best kept secret” hot spot, although it won’t be a secret for long. I am often asked where to go to spot celebrities, and with all of the upscale hotels and activities in town, I’d generally say “don’t waste your vacation time searching.” However, the V-Bar has probably become your best bet. Their staff notes recent visits by Julio Iglesias Jr., Charles Barkley, A.J. of the Backstreet Boys, and various actors in the past couple of months.

V-Bar is open from 4 PM to 4 AM daily. It is a somewhat intimate, upscale bar. The action doesn’t pick up until later in the evening, and a relaxed dress code is enforced (look nice). Even if you aren’t celeb hunting, it is a nice spot to take a date or just relax away from the tables for a while.

STORM – The delays in Mandalay Bay’s new show Storm is attributed to additional building inspections following some design changes during the construction of the set. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-20-Tue-2001/living/15666596.html In the wake of the 1980 fire at Bally’s (then called the MGM Grand, not to be confused with the huge green hotel now at Trop and The Strip), not only are building standards tighter but inspections are very comprehensive. Similar inspections delayed the openings of both The Venetian and The Aladdin.

BON JOVI WEDDING – Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea are going to renew their vows in Las Vegas at the same wedding chapel they married at 11 years ago. This time, they are turning it into a promotion with 75 couples in tow who won various radio station and other contests taking the plunge for the first time. The wedding will take place at the Graceland Wedding Chapel after Bon Jovi’s April 21 concert here. Full story at http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusic/mar21_bon-ap.html

LANCE BURTON’S – new special “Master Magician On The Road” airs March 31, 2001 on the Fox Family Channel. Check local listings for channel and time.

OSCAR ODDS – The “Vegas Line” on the Academy Award winners is up. You can’t actually bet on them, because Nevada law prohibits betting one anything where the outcome is known but they make a fun read at http://www.nypost.com/03222001/entertainment/27069.htm

CONVENTIONS – Chicago has long been the convention capital of the world, but Las Vegas and Orlando are after their business. The Las Vegas Convention Center is almost finished with construction that will double its size and both cities are touting themselves to convention planners as warm weather, resort alternatives to Chicago’s cold winters. Story at http://www.suntimes.com/output/business/conv16.html

CULT VEGAS – is the new book by Review-Journal entertainment writer Mike Weatherford. It combines his odd fascination with both Las Vegas and American pop culture. It includes both the standard icons like Sinatra and Elvis and the more offbeat and unusual. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-18-Sun-2001/living/15631075.html and the book is available from Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0929712714/invegascom

SMOKING – Nevada has the highest death rate from smoking-related diseases in the country and some of the weakest tobacco laws in the United States, allowing smoking just about everywhere except public elevators and school buses. Hearings are underway to tighten those laws on a statewide level, but many are wary of the harsh restrictions of neighboring California, where smoking is even prohibited in bars. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-14-Wed-2001/news/15637012.html In relation to that, this week’s poll at http://www.accessvegas.com asks you “How do you feel about smoking in casinos”?

NO GRIZZLIES – As conjectured here a couple weeks ago, Las Vegas’ bid to land the NBA’s Vancouver Grizzlies was stymied because we refuse to give up legal sports betting. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-16-Fri-2001/sports/15657023.html

OFFICIAL? – You may have seen these “official” Las Vegas tourist info centers along the Strip, but many are just fronts for time-share pitches that prey on people overwhelmed with wondering what to do or see. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-13-Tue-2001/living/15593603.html

FEATURE STORY: Imperial Palace

by Russell and Gail Howard

We just returned from our third Vegas trip in three years, in fact our
second since last July, and were once again very, very pleased by the
Imperial Palace.

I know that opinions range widely on this older denizen of The Strip,
but our experiences have been quite fine there. Let me break down
why:

First, the rooms themselves. We have stayed in the standard rooms
(nothing to complain about at all, and a killer price), as well as the
mini-suite (“luv tub” rooms), which are oversized rooms with ENORMOUS
bathtubs, mirror canopy beds, balconies, and what feels like a lot of
extra room, also a great price at about 60 bucks a night. Our room is
mostly our headquarters for crashing when we’re in Vegas, and these
work great.

Second, the Casino. My wife is a slot player, and has done well. I
am a video poker player, and I vastly prefer 9/6 machines, which are
getting harder and harder to find for under a buck, but IP comes
through with several quarter machines. I can play for a long, long
time for ten bucks on a 9/6 quarter machine!

Third, one need not be a “high roller,” which I clearly am not, in
order to feel welcome / well treated at IP. For example, I perceive
that I get as many free cherry cokes (the teetotaler thing, again)
when I’m playing nickel video poker as I do when I decide to go hog
wild (for me) and play dollar video poker.

Fourth, the staff. I get to know a lot of the change booth folks and
the waitresses. Never, once, in three stays at IP have I had anything
less than a great experience with an employee. They actually seem to
enjoy what they are doing. I don’t know how you train folks for
friendliness, but something is working here. I seek to be polite, of
course, and try to tip enough that I am acknowledging people’s
efforts, though not exorbitantly, but I have found the team to be
first rate.

Fifth, the show. The most significant show at IP, in the winter when
the Luau thing is not happening, is “Legends in Concert,” which we
caught for the first time this past Wednesday night. I really don’t
like maitre’d seating, preferring reserved theatre seats, so I viewed
the seating setup as a minus. However, the show itself, which varies
from time to time, included dead-on “tributes” to Tina Turner,
Madonna, Rod Stewart, The Temptations (easily the crowd’s favorite),
Liza Minnelli, and Elvis. All the musicians do their own singing. The
dancers were attractive and well choreographed. We really enjoyed
this show. We would repeat it, though we would repeat it all the more
enthusiastically if the seating were theatre-style.

Sixth, the location. Absolutely unbeatable. Within three blocks of
Venetian, Treasure Island, Mirage, Harrah’s, Caesar’s, Bally’s, Paris,
and Bellagio. All are easy walking distance, if you like to
casino-hop. And if you catch the tram from Bally’s, you’re at MGM
with Monte Carlo, New York New York, Excalibur, Luxor, and the
Tropicana all with easy walking distance. You will not top IP’s
location.

We are a married couple, upper thirties. On this trip, we took my Mom
and dad along, upper sixties. We plan to take some other relatives
out to LV this fall, and look forward to another fun stay at the
Imperial Palace. We have become loyalists.

We just returned from our third Vegas trip in three years, in fact our
second since last July, and were once again very, very pleased by the
Imperial Palace.

I’ll skip my opinion for now because I don’t want to influence what you readers might say. The show is still reasonably impressive overall, with the effects and involved cast. With any good fortune, Mr. Springfield will be in better health and settling more comfortably into the show.

EDITORS NOTE: It is a beautiful 74 and sunny here today after two weeks of mostly clouds and a number of days of actual rain. Two huge sporting events brought the spotlight to Las Vegas again this weekend: The NASCAR race as well as Holyfield vs. Ruiz made for a crowded weekend and sold out hotels.

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

RED DRAGON – If you have been in town past couple of weeks, you might have seen the new marquee of the Desert Inn aglow in neon reading “Red Dragon,” new red paint of the front of the building, and a flurry of activity out front looking like a casino grand opening. Truth be told, the film “Rush Hour 2” starring Jackie Chan has been shooting. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-05-Mon-2001/living/15561779.html

STORM – Billed as a “combination live concert event, Broadway theatre experience, and Las Vegas dance spectacular,” this new show at Mandalay Bay opens March 22. The creative mind behind the show has worked with Britney Spears, American Music Awards, Ricky Martin, Madonna, Prince, and more. Band members have played with Ricky Martin and others. We saw 3 numbers at a media preview Tuesday, and the show looks like it has quite a bit of potential. One number features rain on stage, and actual (very light) snow falls on the audience later.

If you go see storm, I suggest sitting toward the back left side (as you face the stage) as one number has the singer suspended over the right side of the audience and another has extensive acrobatic action taking place over the most of the lower section. Until a full show review, I can’t say whether it is worth the $55 / $65 ticket price, but the show is heavily Latin influenced (including at least one number all in Spanish) so take your music and culture tastes into consideration.

NASCAR – Jeff Gordon took the lead with 20 laps to go at last weekend’s race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stories about the race at:

http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-05-Mon-2001/sports/15572223.html http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-05-Mon-2001/sports/15573697.html http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-05-Mon-2001/sports/15573720.html http://www.suntimes.com/output/racing/nascar05.html http://www.usatoday.com/usatonline/20010305/3111284s.htm http://seattlep-i.nwsource.com/motorsports/auto053.shtml

THE MEXICAN – the new movie release (both partially shot and set in Las Vegas) is drawing some pretty nice reviews, one of which is at http://news.excite.com/news/uw/010301/entertainment-film-106

JOHN RUIZ – defeated Evander Holyfield to become the new World Boxing Association champ last Saturday night at Mandalay Bay. Word is that he will fight Mike Tyson next. Stories at:

http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-05-Mon-2001/sports/15571168.html http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-04-Sun-2001/sports/15569525.html http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/2001/Mar-04-Sun-2001/sports/15570334.html http://www.sltrib.com/03042001/sports/76587.htm

BRITNEY – Ms. Spears is going to turn her Nov. 18’th concert (much later this year) into a live HBO concert. Story at http://www.billboard.com/daily/2001/0302_05.asp No ticket info available yet.

PLAYGROUND IN MY MIND – I’d tell you that this #1 hit from 1974 sung by (now) Harrah’s showroom entertainer Clint Holmes is readily found on Napster, but that would be wrong of me to encourage downloading it for free. However, if you can’t find it for sale anywhere, and are curious …

FEATURE STORY: EFX Alive

“Jesse was a friend …” sang Rick Springfield all over the radio during my high school years, and I was a fan of guitar driven rock. I think I still have a couple of his tapes somewhere. Almost 20 years later, Springfield is the latest star of the MGM’s spectacular EFX show taking over the reigns from Broadway legend Tommy Tune (who replaced teen idol David Cassidy, who replaced Michael Crawford). I’m sure they were after the very positive response David Cassidy got from audiences during his two year stint, but they goofed.

The show itself is still spectacular and one of the better staged shows for the money. Sal Salangsang does a hilarious pre-show warm-up (get seated 15 minutes early) and they have added him in a couple small parts throughout the show for comic relief. The trapeze artists in the P. T. Barnum act have been replaced with a dazzling act called “The Sphere” where a number of athletic circus performers hang and twist from a giant rotating sphere.

The Merlin act with the large animatronic dragons, fire, explosions, and great stunt work are still fantastic. The Houdini segment (the one act where Springfield shines as the infamous magician coming back from the dead for a momentary reuniting with his wife) contains the thrill of a great magic act woven into a touching story. And, the H. G. Wells act continues to contain the best 3-D film performance I have ever viewed.

The problem? Springfield. He practically sleepwalks through the first part of the Merlin act, where the lead flashes back to his childhood reminiscing about the expanse of life as well as bad dreams. Previous performers brought a contemplative, childlike feeling to it. Springfield might as well have been reading it off of cue cards. His acting throughout the rest of this act gives us an indication why his movie career never took off.

He redeemed himself in the Houdini segment. His soap opera experience served him well in the love scene and he played it in a heartfelt manner that would have been nice to see earlier. Maybe a rocker can’t play out a child’s fantasy. Unfortunately, we now know that a rocker can’t sing show tunes. Springfield’s voice is great for guitar heavy, rough singing but his limited range and raspy vocal qualities struggle on many of the songs (many of which have stayed with the show regardless of who plays the lead).

The low point? While he is in the audience during one number, he meets a “fan” whom he invites down on stage. This isn’t new — it has been a staple of EFX for quite some time. The “fan” is an audience plant who is “thrilled” to be meeting the star. In this case, the “fan” even has Springfield use her cell phone to call a friend at home who couldn’t believe what was happening. This bit plays on too long this time around and is so phony that a number of colleagues who were seeing the show for the first time could see it is fake. If you go, this is a perfect time to take a restroom break. Any time would be a perfect time for them to toss this bit and have Springfield take a little concert break and perform two or three of his hits. He does perform “The Human Touch” earlier in the show.

All is not lost. The basic tenants of the show are still spellbinding, from the huge stage sets to the amazingly creative “circus of the future” costumes to the effects which the show derives it’s name from. I last reviewed the show almost a year ago (archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-04-26.htm ), and my comments about the core show still hold true. At the basic price, EFX still delivers the most bang (literally) for the buck in it’s category. And, the standing ovation that Springfield received from women in the audience who probably went to high school about the same time I did suggest a dimension that I am not equipped to appreciate.

November is the month of Comdex (usually second week of the month) and Thanksgiving weekend, both bringing sold out hotels and high prices. Plus, with the winter months really kicking in up north, many are looking to escape the cold. If you are still flexible, try every different set of arrival and departure days you can make work in your quest for low airfare. Obviously, the sooner you book the better. While I hate to turn away business, a travel agent might be able to arrange a group rate for hotel and air for a party that large and do your research for you.

We have you covered! The two traditional Las Vegas shows left featuring what you describe are Jubilee at Bally’s and Follies Bergere at the Tropicana. I have not yet been to Blue Note, but hear it is worth checking out. They have name acts virtually every single night, so expect to pay a concert ticket price. Let us know your impressions if you go! As for nightclubs, The Drink caters to a younger, crazier crowd, Rumjungle has the “beautiful people” (and a line to match at the door) and Voodoo lounge is upscale and a little more subdued but with possibly the best view in town. All are worth checking out — go to the one or two that would be the best fit for you.

University Medical Center is a highly rated hospital, but it is also a public hospital which can mean long waits for illness that isn’t life threatening while they treat the latest gangbanger who got shot. As for transportation, the monorail is coming but for now you have a tradeoff: the bus is cheap, but very slow. Taxis aren’t cheap at all. Rental cars are a good option when time is more important than money plus you can take all the back roads.
