Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! This is an O.J. free zone. I’m amazed anyone still cares about that clown. Must be a slow news week.

Looks like we’ve seen the last of our 100 degree (F) days for the year. Sun is going down about 7 PM but still plenty of great warm days to hit the pool, but with the amazing lights of our city blazing earlier in the evening. The next couple of months will be amazing for walking The Strip with your favorite cocktail in hand.

Yes… for those of you who have yet to make your first visit: You are welcome to carry your cocktail or beer (glass, bottle, or can) anywhere in our tourism areas. However, police or security will detain you if you get out-of-hand. We have no closing time here. Every hotel has bars and gift shops selling libations 24/7. Simply pace yourself and enjoy Las Vegas. No need to slam drinks to beat “last call.” We don’t have one.

Britney Spears pretty much wrecked her chances of getting a permanent Las Vegas show. Las Vegas show productions are very expensive to produce and promote and Britney has proven herself repeatedly unreliable. Having said that, Fans who grew up with her are now old enough to come enjoy Las Vegas. Never say never.

Best Burgers In Vegas – Our area is host to outlets from three regional burger chains, all of which have a following of people will drive miles out of their way to enjoy one. I want to give you my three picks for the best burgers in Las Vegas. What do they all have in common? All three cook to order with fresh ingredients:

Third Place: In-N-Out Burger – No frills, no frozen stuff, no McFluff. The most simple menu in the world of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, their famous Double Double, basic fries, shakes and soft drinks. Closest one to The Strip is on Tropicana just across the freeway from New York, New York: 4888 Dean Martin Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89103

Second Place: Fatburger – The best “with the frills” burger. You can get hamburger, turkey burger, chicken, topped with things like bacon, an egg, chili or cheese. They have a location right on The Strip across from the Monte Carlo: 3763 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

First Place: Schoops – This is a chain familiar to those of you from the Midwest part of the U.S. The Las Vegas location is a true throwback to the burger and malt shops of the mid-1900’s. Burgers, hot dogs, fries, shakes, and malts cooked to order and simply amazing. Their only location is down on the “new” South Strip, just north of the South Point hotel (look for the Stoney’s nightclub sign, then look for the antique mall to the right): 9151 Las Vegas Blvd South, Las Vegas, NV 89123

Features Are Returning – We are bringing back the ever popular Reader Feedback and Readers Photos this week, and other favorite sections of this newsletter will return as fall kicks in.

Hello,I try to be in Vegas every year on or around Halloween. Some years the hotels hold Halloween parties on the 31st but other times they hold them on the weekend before or after the actual holiday. I will once again be out there this coming October. Could you tell me what hotels will hold parties and when they are going to be held?

I enjoy Vegas and your report–Thanks

Dave

Ted Responds:

I have no clue. I suspect we’ll start letting us know in early October. As always, we post and/or link to info in the newsletter when it comes in!

This is a good time to remind our of our friends in Public Relations for the various resort properties and nightlife venues that our readers enjoy and use our newsletter to help plan their vacation in advance.

While getting info to the local media right before an event is important (to attract the locals who never venture near The Strip… co’mon), getting us the info well in advance might get the info to visitors who care!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Ted was on assignment this week. He was last seen mumbling something about having to do in-depth research on the various European-style pools that have been gaining in popularity in Las Vegas. He should return next week. Please enjoy the stories and links as prepared by Amy Raynor-Cooley.

Correction: Last week’s comment that the Frontier was closing later this week should have read “later next month.” The exact closure date is July 15, 2007.

The Las Vegas Hilton will be having a fireworks display on the 4’th. So far, this is the only one in the vicinity of The Strip that we’ve heard about. Probable best place to view it? Top of the parking garage of The Hilton or Riviera. (View from The Sahara might be blocked by the Turberry Towers). We’d suggest at least being north of Wynn Las Vegas for best possible chance to view. Many other displays are taking place around town: Las Vegas Fourth of July Fireworks and Events List

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! We took last week off (scheduled off-week) and are you kidding? The heat is here, May 5 was one of the biggest weekends in a long time with the big fight, Kentucky Derby, and Cinco De Mayo… all on the same day!

Exclusive Planet Hollywood Casino Photos – Everyone has been talking about the unique, amazing interior of the new Planet Hollywood gaming floor. If you remember the old Aladdin, you won’t recognize the place. I pride myself on knowing just about every hotel in town like the back of my hand, but I got “lost” in the new design! Check out our brand new exclusive Planet Hollywood “Inside The Casino” Photos
Casino Security – By now, many of you have heard about the parking lot murder at The Luxor which was accomplished with a small bomb. This is a local issue, not terrorist related and just happened to take place at a hotel instead of (for example) a local shopping mall. However, it does prompt us to remind you that casino security is there to serve you, even if you aren’t staying at that particular property:

  • Never hesitate to contact security if you notice anything remotely suspicious, ranging from a person or group of people to a package, purse or suitcase left unattended. They want to know, and can address the situation.
  • If someone or a group of people are bothering you, creating problems, or simply unruly, do report them to security. Even if the people in question move on or bolt, they can be watched on cameras both inside and outside the casino. Security will appreciate keeping an eye on them.
  • Casino security will walk you out to your car if desired. You may have just hit a nice jackpot and have some cash on you, or used the parking garage and for some reason are concerned because of the hour or seeing suspicion activity.

Bottom Line: Casino properties are amazingly safe and secure. Live humans monitor (and record) virtually every square foot of the hotel’s public areas, inside and out. I’ve never had a worry or concern in 15 years of living here and covering Las Vegas. However, don’t hesitate to contact security if needed. They are there to help!

More “Screw The NBA” – Amazing how we just had a weekend (May 4-6) of convergence of cultures, interests, people of all backgrounds and races… (HUGE boxing match, Cinco De Mayo and Kentucky Derby) and no violence to note. After the NBA All-Star fiasco, the “we don’t want an NBA team” chant has reached a crescendo.

MGM Mirage Chief Executive Officer Terry Lanni recently noted that tourists stayed in their hotel rooms instead of playing slots and blackjack during the Feb. 17 and 18 (All Star) weekend, when two separate shootings left three people in critical condition (according to the Bloomberg story MGM’s Lanni Says NBA All-Star Weekend Was Bad for Las Vegas).

Someone tell Mayor Goodman (who is otherwise among the top ambassadors Las Vegas has ever had) to trash can the “bring an NBA team” here idea. We are already on the map, and don’t need a pro sports team to make us an “important” city.

Bette Midler is replacing Celine Dion at Caesars and tickets are now available. More on this as it develops.

I love your newsletter. For the 9th year in a row, four of us girlfriends are meeting in Las Vegas 5/21-5/26/07. This year we would like to find the ôMust see Lounge Actsö So can you tell me which one’s we should not miss?

Sherry Miller

Ted Responds:

Lounge acts are often changing, both the location and time and place they play. Here are the pretty consistent ones that put on a great show, and at least one of them should suit almost any particular groups interest (click their links to find out more about them and when/where they are playing):

  • Sunset Strip at the Las Vegas Hilton. They are electric, amazing, look great (both the women and men) and regularly garner good feedback from our readers.
  • Cook E. Jarr at Carnival Court at Harrah’s. Cook E. is a Las Vegas legend, good friend of Tom Jones, and can belt out an “old school” song followed by the latest radio hit all with his unique style that millions love.
  • Twin Keys dueling piano show, also at Harrah’s in their own lounge inside. I’ve seen numerous dueling piano shows in various tourist areas (plus the many that play here), and these are tops. If one doesn’t have a good time at their show, one is not capable of having a good time anywhere.
  • David Van Such is our local king of smooth (light) jazz and his band is the perfect music for chilling with a cocktail while keeping you entertained with the perfect Las Vegas feel.

Rich Little: One’s A Crowd playing April 13th – 15th, 2006, at The Orleans Showroom. Show Time: 8 PM. Tickets start at $39.95, call 702-365-7075 to purchase.

Reviewed August, 2005
by Nancy Hruska

“George Burns” started off the show at The Orleans Showroom recently, cracking a joke about the well-known impressionist Rich Little. “When I die, they’ll have to bury Rich instead.”

A native Canadian, Rich Little has been getting under the skin of and “becoming” celebrities and political figures alike for the last 40 years. Some of his impersonated victims include heavy weight celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzeneger, and Clint Eastwood. But a lot of his voice and mannerism material comes from Baby Boomer friendly figures such as Dr. Ruth, the infamous Frank Sinatra, and even Kermit the Frog to name only a few of his 200 voice collection. Oh, and every U.S. President since Kennedy were certainly not spared by the “Master of Mimic.” Click To Read The Entire Review …

Spend Tax Day with the Sharks – Vegas Style! Bite back with tax day at Mandalay Bay! The IRS and vicious carnivorous fish – coincidence? We call it professional courtesy. To take some of the burden off Mandalay Bay visitors and Las Vegas postal workers on tax day, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay and the US Postal Service are teaming up for the fifth year in a row to help taxpayers bite back. This year, on April 17 (due to the Easter holiday) from 12:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m., taxpayers can mail their returns at the specially designed official US Postal Service Shark Reef Station and avoid the traffic and long lines at the post office.

As an added bonus, every taxpayer using Shark Reef Station will receive a voucher for one free adult admission to Shark Reef — North America’s only predator-based aquarium. Procrastinating taxpayers waiting until the last minute now have a reason to wait a little longer — and visitors to Vegas have a great reason to mail their tax returns during their trip – Vegas style! Gambling Talk: The Mathematics Of Poker and Gambling – with Victor H. Royer. There are quite a few people in the gaming business, particularly writers and gaming experts, who are often prone to overusing mathematical percentages, frequencies of occurrence, probabilities and so.
