FEATURE STORY: Comdex Las Vegas

On a side note, we just got cable modem and we LOVE it. We downloaded the entire Internet Explorer 5.0 (18 MB) in just 12 minutes. This takes well over 2 hours on a 56K modem. Note to AOL users — do upgrade to AOL 5.0 but then go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm and download Internet Explorer 5.0. Why? IE 5.0 is under the hood of AOL, but AOL left a ton of stuff out. Also, if you want to use AOL 5.0 with a cable modem (and yes, you do get that incredible speed), information is at AOL Keyword: BYOA

We found cable modem very cost effective at $40 a month because we were able to get rid of Earthlink ($20), a second phone link ($18) and our DMX box ($6). With cable modem, you can take advantage of the free CD quality internet radio offered at http://windowsmedia.microsoft.com/radio/Radio5.asp without suffering the slowdowns.

Rental Cars – Don’t pay top dollar! Enter the dates of your visit and compare prices from virtually every major rental car agency (most US cities). Book the lowest price company or your regular agency. Save the hassle and some money – Car Rental Savings Search. Few regret renting a car. Free shuttles and city bus rides can be slow and smelly. Taxis can cost what a rental car costs. Your vacation time is valuable — make the most out of it!

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

NATIONAL FINALS RODEO – is less than 5 weeks away. This “Superbowl of Rodeo” runs December 3-12 this year and the event is a must for fans of country or rodeo. Even if you can’t get a ticket, the town turns into cowboy central with Wranglers and cowboy hats dominating the landscape and country music everywhere you turn. Rooms fill up pretty fast, so come for one of the weekends or see if you can get a few days off and book your room at http://www.accessvegas.com

SPORTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL 3 – was shot at the Hard Rock hotel and other spots here in Las Vegas and will air November 13’th on MTV. This program will feature music by the Foo Fighters, Blink 182, Juvenile and Smash Mouth as well as 4 world record attempts. (Note: the show has already been taped, and we alerted you to those dates a month ago. Don’t show up expecting to see something live that weekend).

SO THE WATER TASTES FUNNY – in Las Vegas. It certainly does. Most tourists and many locals drink bottled water. We personally get our drinking water from Water and Ice here in Las Vegas ( http://www.accessvegas.com/waterandice ). But is it safe? Yes. The majority of it comes from Lake Mead, which is quite pure because of the lack of agriculture and industry along it’s banks. You can read more at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-27-Wed-1999/news/12200281.html

PARTY LIKE IT’S 1999 – Las Vegas is ready. Beyond ready. Everything from law enforcement to our water supply delivery and treatment has been checked and tested. If you are one of the few avoiding spending New Year’s Eve with us here because of fear that the world will end, you may find the following two articles of interest: http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-29-Fri-1999/news/12248031.html and http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-31-Sun-1999/news/12043342.html

2 FREE CONCERT EVENTS:

SURVIVOR, BRIAN HOWE (formerly of Bad Company) and two opening bands play free shows downtown at the Fremont St. Experience on November 12’th and 13’th. Opening bands start at 6:00 PM and Fremont St. discount hotel rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-hotels-downtown.htm

MARK HUFF with special guests plays the House of Blues in a free concert November 6 (this Saturday). This is a great chance to see what the House of Blues (located in Mandalay Bay) is like. Pasta Shop & Restaurante’
2495 East Tropicana, Las Vegas 89119
451-1893
Italian Dinner 5-10 pm
Monday thru Saturday, closed Sunday
Mastercard/Visa accepted

This charming Italian restaurante’ is a true symbol of the American way. Chef
David Alenik grew up in the east coast and attended a formal culinary school after coming home from the Navy. He gained quite good experience in New York and eventually moved to Las Vegas. He certainly has been able to create a reputation that any Chef would be proud of, working for two highly visible hotels upon arrival to Las Vegas. Then, when that burning desire to create and operate his own establishment was discussed with his family, both he and his brother decided to offer Las Vegans great fresh homemade pasta at food establishments all over the city. They do a big business here in town allowing restaurants that insist on fresh food for their guests to select from a large list of pastas they can use.

They also opened this intimate dining room that has standing room only from time to time. They choose only fresh ingredients to produce some of the towns best Italian Cuisine with a flair.

Using his own fresh semolina pasta creatively prepared gives locals and visitors alike a real treat. This is a favorite quite dining room for anyones relaxing evening, when you just want to enjoy a great meal and a nice glass of wine.

Reservations are suggested. Plan on wishing you had found this sleepy hideaway a long time ago.

Thai Spice
4433 West Flamingo
362-5308
Lunch-Dinner
11-10 pm Monday thru Thursday, Friday and Saturday to 11pm, closed Sunday
All major cards accepted

Do you have a craving for GREAT Thai food? Then you need to know about Thai Spice if you love authentic and spicy Asian foods. It is voted the best Thai restaurant year after year by the locals and visitors alike.

This fine Thai-Chinese restaurant has taken a number of Asian items and made them available with as much heart as you would care for. From 1-10, ten being hottest, you’ll savor the combinations of flavors and heat that complement each other. The menu boasts a number of appetizers like the typical eggroll, won ton, or golden fried shrimp, but their is also pork sate, Thai BBQ chicken, Todd Munn, Mee Krob or Chan Lam.

The soup selection hails won ton, vegetable or seafood soups, but you need to discover a unique combination of complementary tastes like Tom Yum. (Shrimps, lime juice, lemon grass, and exotic spices). Salads offer seafood, shrimp yum, beef yum and grass noodle yum. Entrees include poultry (try the chicken curry — wonderful), pork, beef (try the Prig-Khing pork), seafood or a number or great vegetable selections. Noodle and rice dishes are a great value.

Thai Spice “must visit” for locals and out of towners, and is refreshingly clean and modern both in appearance and presentations. They even cater to weenies that want their “spicy” left in the kitchen. You don’t have to burn anything you don’t want to here.

Chef Les Kincaid has been involved with food, wine, and golf in Las Vegas since 1978, teaching and writing about all three and hosting a nationally syndicated radio program on 21 stations across the US. Presently, he teaches cooking and wine appreciation classes through UNLV continuing education. Shortly you will be able to see and hear the chef on television and a new radio program in Las Vegas.

From time to time, we are asked about Laughlin information. We do have a page of great Laughlin links at http://www.accessvegas.com/laughlin-nevada-nv.htm but our newsletter really is focused on just Las Vegas. However, we do hear regular reports about how cheap the rooms are and how easy comps are to come by. Also, Laughlin is about 10 degrees warmer in the winter. It’s not uncommon for Laughlin to have “pool weather” even in very late fall and early spring.

This Issue: GENE MADAY by Guest Columnist Billhere

Curious about a restaurant, event, or other Las Vegas attraction that looks fun? Let us review it for you first! Suggestions are always welcome at: allvegastv@aol.com

Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Scenic Southwest Tours – by plane, bus, or even helicopter! You’ve seen the glossy ads in the tourist brochures. You’ve thought about it. You come all the way to Las Vegas — why not see one of the some of the most famous landmarks in the world! Don’t by tricked by web sites & magazines that offer discount tours. Taxes, park fees, permits can almost double the price. Our prices are inclusive – no hidden charges! Best Las Vegas Tours

LAS VEGAS NEWS – of interest to tourists:

MR. LAS VEGAS – is going to be spending a lot more time in Las Vegas. Wayne Newton has just signed a contract with the Stardust which has him playing 7 shows a week (6 nights a week), 40 weeks a year, for a reported $25 million-a-year. Read the story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-27-Wed-1999/news/12216579.html and Stardust discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/las-vegas-strip-hotels.htm (Stardust link).

IMPLOSION TIME – It looks to be a while before our next implosion in Las Vegas, but on Super Bowl Sunday 2000 (Jan. 30) the Mapes Hotel in Reno is going to be imploded. Story at http://www.lvrj.com/lvrj_home/1999/Oct-28-Thu-1999/business/12237404.html and if you are planning to party in Reno for the Super Bowl and catch the implosion, Reno discount rooms are available at http://www.accessvegas.com/reno-sparks-nevada.htm

THE HAVANA CIGAR BAR – in the Tropicana Hotel celebrates Monday Night Football every week with $1.50 bottled beer, $2.00 well drinks, 15% off all premium cigars, and a “buy one, get one free” of their own “Cuban” hand-rolled cigars which are prepared on the premises.

YOU CAN BET ON IT – Larry Grossman hosts a great, non-biased show about sports betting every day locally on KBAD 920 AM and you can also get it live on the web by going to http://www.larrygrossman.com This show is NOT like those you see on cable TV on the weekends, where “pro handicappers” brag about how they went 89% the last weekend. He purely has some of the best experts in the business give their insights.

BONEHEAD AWARD – goes to me for writing an entire review on the Houdini Lives Again show and failing to note that it plays at the Plaza Hotel downtown. I did include the following info (for those new or curious): The shows plays six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday at 4 PM with an added 8 PM show on Sunday. Tickets are $15.95.

I’m sure it comes as little surprise that I don’t have a journalistic background! I started this newsletter in response the all the glossy tourism magazines which are full of “articles” that are just paid ads. I am trying to tell it like it really is (or at least how I see it). Please — if I leave out something or don’t make sense, do drop me a line at allvegastv@aol.com and let me know. I rely heavily on reader INPUT to help improve the quality of this newsletter.

NEW YEARS EVE LAS VEGAS ROOMS – are still available! Call Hotel Reservations Network at (800) 666-5268 for a free price quote! NOTE: You MUST stay on the line until you get a person. HRN is NOT booking these specific dates online. We will be leaving this notice up as long as rooms continue to be available, but they are starting to go fast.
