Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – Well, well… we might have a major Las Vegas strike on our hands, and still, mum seems to be the word. Am I hoping or wanting one? Absolutely not. And a disclaimer before we begin:

While most of you will find some value in the general notes, members with trips planned between May 15 and July 15 of this year, or those who have maybe already taken the vacation time, are thinking about taking the time, have booked a flight but no hotel, and similar.

Please note that my thoughts are pragmatic, and aimed at the person who otherwise has no horse in the race. If you are very much anti-union or pro-union, please act in accordance with your thoughts and feelings. I’m simply concentrating on the regular visitor who either doesn’t want their vacation turned into a mess, or wants to know what to do if (heaven forbid), they show up and a strike happens.

We’ll start with a “Just The Facts, Ma’am” segment on what to do if you are booked, or if you are thinking about booking during that period. I’ll get into the nuts and bolts and politics later for those so inclined.

Help! I’m Already Committed To A Trip!

If you have already booked, and are coming, are you possibly going to be in for a mess and tons of inconvenience? Will you even have a room? Will you be able to get food?!?

How Long Will It Last? – First, any strike will most likely be short-lived. And, any hotel owner or group who is prepared to deal with one will have contingency plans in place for at least basic room changeovers. But, there might be a few hours of wait to have a room ready for you. So, keep that in mind.

I’m Still Going To Get Hungry – What about eating? The reality is that most restaurants in most Las Vegas Strip hotels are owned by third-parties. And, even though the union representing most all Las Vegas hotel workers (across the board, with the exception of table games dealers) is called the Culinary Union, they actually don’t represent a ton of third-party restaurants. Most will be open.

And, I’m certainly not going to starve. This is NOT a city-wide strike. No shortage of places to dine exist within a few minutes of The Strip.

I’m Staying Downtown. What About Fremont Street? – Same story on rooms. And while downtown hotel restaurants are more often run/owned by the hotel, East Fremont Street plus Container park, plus one block over on East Carson Avenue have no shortage of places to dine. (Google Maps is the visitors friend in this instance).

And, a couple of very important things to keep in mind: The union is negotiating separately with every hotel group or individual owner. MGM Resorts may come to an agreement while Caesars may have a strike. Of visa-versa. Sahara might settle and Strat may not. (These are simply examples and in no way reflect my opinion on what hotels will encounter a union strike).

And as noted, any strikes will likely be short-lived. The properties simply can’t handle the losses and future loss of bookings which would come with that kind of disruption. And, the union knows this.

Is There A Way To “Hedge My Bet” To Minimize Any Issues? – There might be. Some travel insurance companies will insure and pay if you deal with certain kinds of travel strikes. Just like if you book a trip and airline issue stops it, and they pay you for the loss.

I’ve never used travel insurance, and thus have never done homework on that and certainly don’t want to speak out of turn. When I give suggestions to our members, they are tried-and-true. So, I’ll leave you to your own research, reading the fine print on what various companies cover.

One Warning: The little bit of research I did notes that strikes are NOT covered if the strike is known or a threatened date is set. As I’m sending this, the Culinary Union has not publicly stated they will strike, nor set a date. If you choose to take the travel insurance route and find one that covers hotel strikes as part of their strike coverage, I’d do so without delay.

I Have Not Booked, But I Have Time Off, Already Booked Airfare, How Can I Still Visit?

So, you are thinking of coming, have the time off, but now aren’t sure? Not to worry. You actually have it pretty easy. Why? Not every hotel on or near The Strip and Fremont Street are staffed with union workers. The Culinary Union has generously provided us this map of the hotels their workers are represented at:

CULINARY UNION / FAIR HOTELS: LAS VEGAS LISTINGS

Notable hotel exceptions are:

The Venetian and Palazzo

Resorts World

Near Strip properties like Palace Station, Gold Coast, The Palms, Tuscany, Ellis Island, The Platinum, Howard Johnson’s by Wyndham, Desert Rose and more. Zoom in on that map and look for lodging that has no union designation on it.

Locals properties also not noted on the map.

I’m Not That Familiar With those Properties – If I had to pick one that is right in the middle of both price range/amenities/quality just to make things easy for you? Probably Palace Station. It sits just a stones-throw from the North end of The Strip. Literally, a baseball player with a good arm could stand on their parking garage and hit the back side of The Strip with a ball toss.

Table limits are lower, slots are looser, food prices are lower than The Strip and even downtown.

And, you are in no way confined to dining on-property. If you know how to use a stoplight crosswalk button, check out Google Maps Restaurants Near Palace Station. And, if you are willing to stretch your legs and walk just up Sahara a few blocks: Google Maps Restaurants near Sahara and Valley View. Non-union, plenty to choose from, locals pricing.

Obviously, one size does not fit all. Some of you may opt for Venetian and others, for Ellis Island. Palace is literally “I’m new to Vegas, have no clue, what is a “can’t go wrong” choice during a possible strike period for those not overly familiar with the listed options.

Nobody Is Talking About A Strike, Are You Sure?

So, will there be a strike? And, why is literally NOBODY else talking about this? Ted, are you sure they didn’t operate on your brain instead of your tummy (abdomen) during your last hospital surgery?!?

The labor issues have been in the news. However, the TV news and newspapers rely on advertising from casino companies, depend on the health of the local economy, and don’t want to see Las Vegas bookings plummet on the off-chance various strikes happen. They have bills to pay. On the other hand, we get $0.00 per month from casino companies. And, even when we do note or promote room specials, we really only get a few bucks per booking. Our MEMBERS make all of this possible. So, my top loyalty is YOU.

The Culinary has been rattling the strike saber since before last November’s election. Buried deep in a Las Vegas Sun story on how hard the union was working to elect Democrats, a union leader noted that one of the reasons is because in a strike, Democrat politicians are more labor-friendly. This was a “first shot over the bow”.

Culinary Union Las Vegas Strike InfoOver the past few weeks, the union has been very active in state-wide politics. Including wanting to keep COVID-era legislation in place mandating daily room cleanings and such (unless the guest opts out). Between cost-cutting and automation, local hotel employment still isn’t where it was pre-pandemic. Somewhere around 1/6 of the union’s employees are still not back to work.

If there is a time for the union to show it’s power and muster a strike to really give their members something to get behind, and to get everyone to “rally around the flag”, this might be the time. Even if it is a short strike against selected properties to show they mean business and make a huge, worldwide media splash. Especially with the mantra that “Las Vegas hotels are making huge profits while customer service suffers”.

Note: Please do NOT shoot the messenger! Earlier, I noted how to avoid union hotels if needed. Now, I’m telling you the union’s PR campaign which might hold water and resonate very well. I’m simply calling balls and strikes here.

Would I put the odds of at least some striking at above 50% now? YES. The union is canvasing middle-class neighborhoods which are of the demographic to contain quite a few hotel employee union members. I know, because I live fairly close to The Strip in just such an area. I’m seeing all of this first-hand.

Plus, the news is starting to have stories about the fight to keep higher levels of safety and service. Noting how fewer maids mean a less safe work environment, and how checking on rooms daily lets the maids get a feel for who is staying, the ability to keep an eye out for anything JDLR (Just Doesn’t Look Right, an industry term for when a property or gaming employee is seeing something, and their gut simply tells them something is wrong), and similar.

This is a PR and news union push well above anything I remember in my 29 years in town (as of this month). Hence the legitimate concerns here.

Hopefully, all will end well and this is simply precautionary. However, now you are armed with all the info you need. Just in case.

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! Pools are open, everyone is talking March Madness, and cold weather (highs below 70F) appear to be done. Let’s dig into the latest “must know” for Vegas:

Fly Now Or Fly Later? – In a fairly recent issue, I suggested that if you had the option regarding a Las Vegas visit this year, coming later in the year might be a good idea. Staffing should be much closer to normal. The pent-up demand will have started to fade. We’re still looking at 2023 before conventions really start to return to normal.

Note from Ted: Some time ago, we talked about the Grand Canyon West, which is home of the Skywalk (glass walk that juts you 4000+ feet over the bottom of the canyon). We too also suggest using Maverick Helicopter Tours whether you want to visit the Grand Canyon West, or enjoy just a flight over the canyon. They have (by far) the highest standards in town, and I’m 100% comfortable putting both family and friends on their flights.

As with the airlines, Maverick is requiring masking until the federal government ceases that rule for traveling on planes, trains, and similar.

Just a little FYI for those who are considering going – please be aware of their rules. You’re not allowed to take your cameras, binoculars out on the sidewalk for instance. They have “photo” package deals if you’re interested. There are various ways to get there… by rental car, bus tour trip, and (my fave) helicopter tour (which I did through Maverick Helicopters – highly recommend them)!

Visiting one of the Top Buffets in Vegas – Wynn’s Seafood Buffet

(Video Publishers Notes) On my last night in Vegas, I got a chance to explore and decided to visit another top Vegas Buffet. I’ve always found that the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars and the Buffet at the Wynn are always the contenders for the top buffets on the Vegas Strip. I have visited the Bacchanal buffet on this visit, but have not yet tried the Wynn buffet. I’m curious to know if it’s just as good as before or maybe even better! …is the Wynn better than the Bacchanal? There’s only one way to fine out.
I made a trip over to the Wynn to attend their weekend seafood dinner buffet. Generally, I choose the weekend dinner as they tend to have the most item and selections to showcase, and this was certainly the case! Along with the array of roasted meats with luscious prime rib and bbq, seafood selections with crab and whole fish, it was their specials stations stood out! Freshly made tacos and warm comforting made to order noodles were very satisfying.
I recall in the past that the Wynn came in a close second to the Bacchanal, and that has remained unchanged. Still and amazing buffet and you won’t be disappointed; it looks like the Wynn and Vegas are up and running, better than ever!

Newkirk’s Notes

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas! – So, Las Vegas hotel casinos are open! Many of you might already know that. What we’ll be doing is giving you the details to what you need to know, especially based on all of the questions that have been coming in. With continued bad internet rumors out there (like “the bars are going to be closed”, which is entirely false, bars all over Nevada have reopened and the casino bars will very much be open), we’re here with the knowledge and facts.

The opening announcement was not without drama. Those of you who followed my suggestion to head to the Review-Journal’s website on the date specified got there to find out that the governor’s 5:30 PM press conference was called off, with just a promise of a video announcement later that evening. Seriously? We all had to cool our heels until well after 9 PM to get a written statement of the June 4 reopening. Don’t get me started…

Let’s dig in on need-to-know stuff:

Masks – Masks are not mandatory in the State of Nevada. However, they are encouraged. Each casino property will decide on their own if masks are mandatory.

For our Supporting (Paid) Members, we go into significant detail about masks use, availability, and other social distancing protocols to expect.

Temperature Checks – This has brought truckloads of questions and some confusion. Especially since was hotter than normal, and we’re getting right into the time of year we see 100+ F on a daily basis.

While every property may have a slightly different way of going about things, they will be using a scanner that can scan multiple people as they walk in. If you read high, you will be asked to step aside so they can check your temperature. If you read high, you will be asked to move to an area where you can cool down.

Full details, first-hand experience report (by me) on getting screened and FAILING due to heat (more of what to expect), including how long you get to cool down, how that works, what happens if you don’t pass again, and similar is available in our Members Edition.

Shows – This has been a fairly common question. Shows do NOT have an opening date. At issue is trying to comply with current social distancing rules while putting enough people in the audience for the show to make a profit. While we’re big advocates of enjoying a show during each visit, that could easily be a number of weeks off.

Crowding On The Strip – Some are worried that there will be no social distancing on The Strip. As we’ve noted, Las Vegas will maybe be at 30% occupancy. And, that is a high guess in the early stages. Hello elbow room! If some people get into your space, you’ll be able to distance yourself, or simply say “Would you mind giving us some space so we call can stay safe?”

Riots – As of now, this is moving to be a non-factor. However, for our Supporting (Paid) Members, we went into great detail about what to expect, how to stay safe, what actions are being taken, and more.

At The End Of The Day…

If you won’t be visiting for a while, stay tuned. We get it. You might be older, in poor health, don’t want to fly, fully believe that a second wave is going to kill millions (and don’t want to be part of it)… whatever floats your boat.

However, the demand is of the charts. While only planning to open two hotels, Caesars Entertainment first bumped it up to three (Harrah’s, Caesars, Flamingo) based on demand. And now, are scheduling many more of their properties to be open THIS MONTH. Boyd Gaming initially thought they would keep their downtown properties shuttered. All but Main Street Station are opening NOW. (We love MSS and hope it opens soon). Downtown Grand was holding off. Not anymore.

Temperature checks, masks, not everything open, no shows… we still have pools (yes, open with social distancing), booze, pretty girls and hot guys (waitresses, bartenders and such), and no shortage of gambling. (Based on visitation expectation vs. social distancing for gambling, you should have no shortage of finding the ways to wager you’ve always enjoyed).

As the famed Michael Buffer says, “Let’s Get Ready To Rumble…“.

Hope you are enjoying this issue!

PS Yes, our 20% off offer for a full year of our Access Vegas Insider Vibe Membership offer is over. As we noted it would be upon us getting an announcement date of when Las Vegas would open. Although, to be honest: Many of our members gladly play full price ($34.80 for an entire year) and feel that they get their monies work just with a small portion of all our membership offers.

You can keep coming to Vegas going “I wonder” or “I’m not sure” or hoping all the stuff you are spending hours reading on the internet is good info, and not some spammy promotion.

OR… you can support us with (literally) the cost of a “cup-of-joe” (cup of coffee) per month, know that we 100% have only your best interests at heart, and that part of our guarantee is to answer your questions (in a direct response to you) to the absolute limit of our abilities.

And… there is little that myself and our advisory team don’t know. We have nearly 100 years combined “boots on the ground” experience here in Las Vegas tourism. Join us here: Members.AccessVegas.com

Video Shows Sneeze Guards On Louisiana Casino’s Gaming Tables – Las Vegas is Next

Your next visit to a casino could look very different. A video of a sneeze guard attached to a blackjack table at a casino was shared widely on Twitter. Gaming professional Joe Bunevith posted it. He said it was taken at Margaritaville Resort Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana, and the video was shared with him by a friend.

Members Mania

We have two questions/thoughts, which posted it in our Members Facebook Group. Since not all Members choose to be part of the group, we are posting it with my answer here.

As always, we always post everything here in the Members issues. You only miss out on commenting on Facebook and the occasional breaking story. IE, if you are not a Facebook type of person, you are not missing out. 100% of everything (except what gets quickly dated) is here in the newsletter editions!

Ok… I’ve been asked a few questions by others I know whom are contemplating visiting Vegas in the next few months.

One of those questions is about slot machines. Many of them play slots.. which (in my opinion) tends to have a higher house advantage than any of the table games (with the exception of possibly poker slots). If the casinos are down in revenue.. won’t the slots be that much more tighter than ever? Fremont always had looser slots than the strip.. but will this be different during the pandemic era?

There is talk about reducing the number of machines and spreading them out in the casinos… that means less choices to play. Also.. what about the usual casino resort fees.. will they stay the same, go up, or go down? (I do know they eliminated parking fees just recently).

That also goes for the usual charges on drinks, foods, etc. The general thought process from those who’ve I’ve talked to say… tighter slots, more expensive drinks, foods, etc… but they’ll entice you to come and stay by lowering the costs of the rooms. What does everyone else think?

Patrick Magee

Ted Responds:

They would be insane to tighten the slots. They are not looking at opening as a way to generate huge cash. They just want something coming in. And, want to show the world (and their stockholders, when applicable) that things are going to be back to normal.

Basically, every other machine will be turned off in many casinos. So, if there are 8 of your fave machines, 4 will be working. Which is no big deal because occupancy will only be (give or take) 25%.

Resort fees unfortunately won’t budge at this time. However, if they are luring you in with a comp, it never hurts to tell them you will take it if they also comp the resort fees.

They have no reason to raise the price of food and beverage. It was already high on The Strip, and Fremont Street will not sully their reputation for being more wallet-friendly.

What will be open on Fremont?

Vaughn Sutton

Ted Responds:

Except for Main Street Station, it appears pretty much everyone is opening back up. Downtown Grand, who had initially stated that they would remain closed, is opening due to demand.

While we initially heard that the live bands could be back on Fremont Street right away, as live entertainment, and given the current social distancing rules, Fremont Street Experience has elected to hold off on that for now. Have no doubt that they will be bringing back the live music as soon as permissible.

For now, what they are indicating is that they will have videos of the bands playing on the stages instead. Or, something along those lines. I guess it is better than nothing for now!

Access Vegas Insider Vibe March 26, 2020

Access Vegas Founder Ted NewkirkHello From Las Vegas – I hope this finds you as well as possible, and for the many of you staying at home (voluntarily or otherwise), that you are not going too stir-crazy.

After watching far too much incorrect internet rumors, I thought that I'd take a minute to inform you — our free newsletter subscribers, about some of the hard facts.

NOTE: This is of 10 PM Pacific on Thursday March 26, 2020. Because of the size of this mailing list, it takes hours and hours for this to send. Plus, the time it takes before you open it. If something major changes in the morning, I don't know about it at this writing. If I had that kind of ESP, I'd make a fortune betting sports!

So, lets get into the FACTS:

– A significant number of Las Vegas hotels are already taking reservations on dates ranging from April 17 to May 1.

– Over the years, around 1/3 of Las Vegas customers have been drive-ins (by car). Even if the air travel situation is dicey, Las Vegas will work to open as soon as permitted to cater to drive-in visitors.

– Much will depend on when President Trump decides to suggest the country is open for business. I say "suggest" because…

– At this time, Trump is continuing to let governors make that choice.

– Our Governor Sisolak seems to be very shut-down oriented. On the flip side, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman and many out of work and without pay are lobbying harder for an early opening. However, it all rests with our governor.

– Is Las Vegas safe? Especially for someone who drives here in their own car sooner than later (greatly limiting exposure)? Let's crunch the numbers:

Nevada has a population of 3,034,392. We currently have 420 cases and 10 deaths. Let's get out the calculator:

Infection rate Rate: 0.000138

Death Rate: 0.000003

No… I can't count that small either. I had to figure out what something to the negative fifth power was on my calculator!

To put it in perspective, the infection rate is nearly identical to your odds of being DEALT a royal flush. I didn't say HITTING a royal. We're talking about pressing the button and you are handed one. Good luck with that one in your lifetime.

– April brings high 70's and 80's to Las Vegas. I've seen a number of medical experts note that this virus does NOT like hot, dry weather. In a very short amount of time here, Las Vegas (and Phoenix and the desert areas of California) may just be the most safe places you can be.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do not shoot the messenger. I'm a quoted analyst in Las Vegas travel matters because I crunch the facts and numbers, look at trends and patterns, and am known to be quite accurate.

IE, don't blame me for killing the earth. People are going to come to Las Vegas. My info is for those who will travel. That's what I do. If you are staying home until the worldwide infection rate is 0.00000, then please do so!!!

For now, we're in a 30 day shut-down of ALL gambling in Nevada, plus all non-essential businesses. I like to make lemons out of lemonade. Hence, we've instituted a "countdown" on both our Twitter Feed and our Free Facebook Feed.

(We have a special, Members Only Facebook Group for our Supporting (Paid) Subscribers. However, unlocking that is only for those who help support our paid staff and all the the extra help, savings, and tips we have for those who donate $2.90 per month — paid yearly — to help us keep the lights and keep us doing what we do).

Once per hour, we post a Las Vegas picture from our archive of many, many thousands of Las Vegas pictures. We're having fun covering a bit of everything. You can poke your head in and take a look, or go ahead and follow us if Twitter or Facebook are platforms you enjoy using!

Also, since we KNOW that Las Vegas will be back as soon as authorities deem it safe, we know that YOU will be back before long. We're already hearing from people planning trips for late Spring, Summer, and beyond!

Hence, we're going to extend our Supporting (Paid) Member discount. But… ONLY until the day it is announced that Las Vegas is going to open. 20% off of your 2020 membership, and you'll still get a full year. 365 days, not just until the end of this year. You can do that right now at www.Join.Vegas, or let me remind you of just a few highlights of our membership program:

* Twice-Monthly "members only" newsletter. Always chalked full of Las Vegas information you generally WON'T find spending hours searching the internet (I'm not joking when I said our team is full of paid experts). Not visiting for a while? All the better! You'll have a few months to absorb and take advantage of so much great info!

* 12 special, exclusive reports. These 12 reports are worth the modest admission price to unlock them. Everything from how to get more comps without gambling more money, to how to bust the line at a crowded restaurant here without forking over a tip to the gatekeeper.

* The MOST comprehensive list of food and beverage specials on The Strip, Downtown, and Near-Strip. We have one paid person dedicated to maintaining this list. No coupons needed, and you can access it on your phone during your trip, and it is sorted by LOCATION!!!

Our "Your Guy In Vegas" feature. Try and search the internet for the best this-or-that, and you'll get all kinds of fake reviews, spammy pages, and what-not. You ask us about something, tell us what you have in mind, and we can provide some REAL, EXPERT, PERSONAL advice.

There is more, but you get the idea. You can see everything at www.Join.Vegas, and then use the coupon code ACCESS2020 when you check out, knocking your monthly cost (paid yearly) to $2.32 a month. SERIOUSLY… how can you NOT take me up on that one!!!

And… just in case this lockdown lasts way longer than expected, we'll maintain our other current GUARANTEE:

IF you do not visit during the first 365 days of your membership — for any reason whatsoever, we'll give you another full year on-the-house. And, that is in addition to our normal 60-day money-back guarantee. Protected via your credit card company through our "Secure Site Certificate" check-out.

Really simple: Step 1, go to www.Join.Vegas. Step 2, scroll though the info, and click when you see one of the Make Me A Member buttons. (Or, if you are in a hurry and ready go to NOW, go directly to the Sign-Up Page). Step 3, enter ACCESS2020 at the top where it says Coupon Code. You are literally 30 seconds away from unlocking more valuable Las Vegas information than you've seen in one spot in some time.

PS The ACCESS2020 for 20% off coupon code comes down the day our governor sets the "back open for business" date. Which could be sooner than later. Delay at your own risk!

Best,

Ted Newkirk

Great Casino Slots – Volume 2
“Vegas Vic” – Victor H. Royer

Great-Casino-Slots-V-2-450x675

Our gaming author and gaming editor, Vegas Vic – Victor H Royer – has written a new book. Featuring the Latest, Hottest and Best New Casino Slots, this book will take you for a ride among the world of today’s newest and greatest casino slot machines.

We asked Vegas Vic why he wrote this book, and here’s what he had to say:

I wrote this book for the following reasons:

  • To save you money – by showing you what these games are, what does what, what pays what, how to play them, what they look like, and how to tell which are the better versions – BEFORE you go to the Casino and play with your own money!
  • To help you WIN more money – by giving you a list of the newest and best of the casino slots that you will find in your favorite casino, and by showing you what the pays are, how much it will cost you to play all the available Options and Bonuses, how this all works, what to expect, when, and how long it will take before you can expect that win and that Bonus.
  • To save you time – by showing you the actual games, what they look like, and giving you the detailed descriptions of what they pay, how, when, and how much – BEFORE you go to the Casino and waste your time wandering around looking for something that “might be OK” to play. With this book, you won’t have that problem, because you will now know exactly what to look for, and what the game looks like.
  • To give you confidence – by showing you which games are High-Volatility, Medium-Volatility, and Low-Volatility, and explaining what this is and why it is important for you to know it – BEFORE you use your own money in the Casino!

Yes, these are some of the reasons. There are more, of course, but these are those that I think are the most important – IF you WANT TO WIN!

As crazy as it sounds, some people DONÆT want to win. They just want to wander into the casino and stick their money into anything willy-nilly, and then they go around complaining that
“nothing pays” and “I can’t ever win anything.”

But you DON’T have to be one of them! Now you can know all you need to find the best game there is, and how to play it – before using your own money in the casino!

Uber, Lyft, And Taxi Cabs

Hi friends! Rick “Ziggy” Ziegler here with some more ride-sharing news

Q: Can I get a ride to and from the airport?

A: As of this writing on November 17th, 2015, there was a county meeting held to discuss this very issue.

As of right now, Lyft can pick and drop off at the Las Vegas (McCarran) Airport. Uber cannot. We have been told that we will soon, but Uber drivers must purchase a county business license. We already paid Nevada $200 for a state business license.

Because Nevada has no state tax, this is one of the ways they generate their revenue.

I’ve heard two rumors so far. One is that it will cost us $25. Another rumor says $275.

People are discussing this back and forth in the forums.

Q: I have Uber, is there any way my driver can take me to the airport?

A: There are really only three options here.

1. Take a taxi or get a Lyft account

2. The Uber driver might take you, but they risk getting a $100 citation if caught. Some Uber drivers have risked it.

3. Ask the Uber driver to take you to Hooters Hotel. From there you can catch a short taxi ride to the airport.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Hot and windy is the word here this week. Those constant 100 degree days look like they are here to stay for the summer. Still… there is something nice about being able to enjoy the Las Vegas Strip well into the evening and late night without getting chilly. Speaking of summer parties and events…

What do you get by adding one part Ditch Friday pool party and one part LA Sunset Tan? One amazing afternoon at Palms Las Vegas!

Ditch Friday Pool Party Palms Las Vegas

LA Sunset Tan launched their 2008 Sexy Swimwear Collection with a poolside fashion show at Ditch Friday on May 30’th. (Another tough assignment for news editor/photographer Mark Jacobs). Ditch Friday is the weekly Friday afternoon lounge/party at The Palms pool area and features live musical performances, prize giveaways, and designer fashion shows throughout the summer.

This weekly event runs through October 3, 2008 and is open to the public ($20 cover, local ladies complimentary).

LA Sunset Tan Bikini Show

At this event, the entire cast of E!’s hit reality show “Sunset Tan” was on hand including the Ollie Girls, LA Sunset Tan owners Devin Haman and Jeff Bozz, Janelle Perry, Nick D’Anna, Ania Migdal and Erin Tietsort and can be seen in many of the following photos:

Spamalot closes in about one month so this is your last chance to see it on Las Vegas. Click on the Spamalot button in the right sidebar of this newsletter to save on some of the final tickets available!

We receive weekly reader email expressing concern over what many of you feel that Las Vegas has become. Everything went so upscale that the price of visiting went through the roof. At the same time, the slots and table games both got tighter. To top it off, traveling to Las Vegas from international destinations continues to get more difficult.

A word to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau and our elected leaders: You can advertise internationally all you like, but until it gets less difficult for worldwide visitors to get here… much of that advertising will fall on deaf ears.

In addition, Nevada has two prominent U.S. Senators that should be doing something about about this. Stopping terrorism is one thing, but harassing people with two-hour waits in immigration lines at the airport is out-of-line. Perhaps Senators Reid and Ensign (both of who are in powerful positions working on the coming elections) shouldn’t forget that the state they represent relies especially on international visitors because of current local worldwide economics.

What can you as readers do? Continue to write a “Letter To The Editor” of our Review-Journal newspaper (as it is read by the politicians).

Last month, the Sunday paper contained a number of protest letters (scroll down that page to Shakedown and the following letters). Time for more of them!

Don’t be shy… You can submit your own comments to our local paper online at:
http://www.reviewjournal.com/about/print/press/letterstoeditor.html

Don’t assume the “other guy” will do it. If our readers unite and bombard our paper, you’ll see plenty of new coverage our politicians can’t ignore.

Enjoy This Issue!

Las Vegas Showgirls Shine On In Jubilee! at Bally’s

by Lincoln Hudson

Having observed how the Las Vegas Strip has dramatically changed over the years in order to exclusively cater to the palette of the under thirties, sometimes it is good to come across a show that makes one pinch oneself and remember the entertainment that built Las Vegas and continues to cater to adults of all ages.

One of the shows doing such is Jubilee! at Bally’s Hotel and Casino. If you need a break from watching French Canadian clowns pushing life size plastic balls across the stage, then Jubilee! is the right piece of camp, topless, musical brain candy for you.

Gambling Talk: N-k-d Eskimo – with Victor H. Royer. No, this article is not about the famous poker player Eskimo Clark, clothed or otherwise. It is instead a fable from a time more innocent, a time of great joy, and a time when poker was not just a game û it was an event. The time is 1983, in the weeks spanning Christmas and New YearÆs festivities. It is a story personal to me, and one that to this day warms my heart. Just a question about taxi fares. Do the drivers charge a flat rate or do they charge by the person?Thank you,
Shirley

Ted Responds:

Up to 5 can ride for the same price. They charge per mile (plus an initial fee and wait time) but there is no extra per-person charge.

There is a coupon for the additional Maine lobster tail. Ordinarily you are charged $5.99. They are hard to find. Could you do some research and find out where you can get the coupon?

Also there is supposed to be a discount coupon for the buffet at the Rio as well.

Thanks,

MikeTed Responds:With so many different coupon books and tourist magazines floating around town (and the fact that any coupons or offers in them can change weekly), tracking or finding one particular coupon is next to impossible.

Best advice is to flip through the tourist magazines when you hit town and see if there is a coupon for something you specifically want to do or see.

In general, a couple of notes on coupons:

1. Don’t use one to go out of your way to something you weren’t already interested in. Your time here is often short and precious. Spending an hour or two going out of your way to save a few bucks on something you aren’t sure about can turn into a waste of time.

2. Don’t expect to find coupons for the top shows. If you have one or more “must see” shows, buy the tickets in advance or you may face a sold-out situation when you arrive.

Hope this helps,

Hi Ted,

My wife & I have just got home to England from our annual trip to your wonderful city. We saw some great shows, the Rat Pack was one of the best ever. The Dean Martin impersonator was almost as good as the “Dean” himself. We will be back next year (hope we recognise the place with all the new buildings) for our yearly pick me up.

By for now,

John & Jean (Manchester)

Ted Responds:

The Rat Pack Is Back is one of those often overlooked shows that always seems to get raves from those who check it out. Adding to the ambiance is the very retro showroom at The Plaza hosting the show. We’ll be sending a writer to do a full review soon.

In the meantime, those wanting to enjoy the show for themselves can click to The Rat Pack Is Back Tickets

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! As usual, both the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street were jammed over Memorial Day weekend. The cool weather (partly cloudy, mild temps) keep the mood slightly more subdued than usual but hey… 70 degrees (F)á beats the 108 we had the week before!

A big congratulations goes to Mac King for being named the top Comedy Magician in the world according to Magic Magazine (April 2008 issue). I have the actual issue and was very impressed that this wasn’t just some “award” but a careful, scientific, peer-chosen determination.

He actually beat out both Penn and Teller and The Amazing Johnathan, two names which have had far greater media exposure. Plus, the price is right. Mac King is an afternoon show that will be both easy on your wallet and get you our of our pending summer heat.

Tickets for Las Vegas’ top comedy magic shows:

Las Vegas Rio Sky ShowThe new Rio “Show in the Sky” has just (and I mean JUST) launched. We haven’t even had time to pop over and see it, but the press stuff they sent out notes it is much more sexy and sensual, including three different shows:

With three different shows, guests are encouraged to stay a while for an all new experience to see a unique show each time. The bedroom style performance will feature a 17 foot-long bed with high-energy performers of seduction. The bath/spa style performance will encompass a glamorous stage with sexy girls in towels. The modern-day club performance brings the feeling of old Hollywood glamour meets classic burlesque with accents of rhinestones and feathers throughout.

Shows play nightly on the hour from 7 PM to Midnight.

Las Vegas Second Most Digital Savvy – I never thought I’d see this day, but Las Vegas recently ranked second (behind Austin, TX) as the nation’s most digitally savvy city. This is a huge turn-around. When I launched AccessVegas.com in 1997 (and the predecessor two years earlier) as strictly online publications, casinos didn’t have websites and it seemed rare to find someone in upper management who knew what the internet was.

The Scarborough Research study cited the relatively young average age of residents, median household income of $53,000, higher tech penetration of warm, Western (US) cities, and the transient nature of the residents. This makes sense as people in their 20’s and early 30’s move here thinking they’ll have some fun, make some cash, then move back home (or move on to Southern California, Phoenix, or San Francisco). More of this story available here: Digital Savvy In Sin City

On the party front…

Dick’s last resort is brewing up beer pong, putting a silly spin on this infamous drinking game. They note:

DickÆs Last Resort invites you to test your skills at Bar Pong, the restaurantÆs very own rowdy rendition of the popular past time that is beer pong. With DickÆs entertainer extraordinaire Taco acting as the rambunctious referee, the game has never been this fun.

A touch of truth or dare is tossed in to add a twist as missed shots result in kooky challenges that will have everyone laughing. Whether flying solo or with friends, pick one of DickÆs 18 draft beers and join in the everlasting excitement where everyone is a winner.

Where: DickÆs Last Resort at Excalibur. When: 7 pm û Late, Wednesday û Sunday.

June 5 brings another edition of “Cinco de Taco” at the Pink Taco inside the Hard Rock Hotel offering $2 Coronas and Corona Lights, $3 Sauza Hornitos shots, $3.75 Sauza Hornitos margaritas as well as half-off appetizers from 4 p.m. until closing. “Cinco de Taco” features a live Mariachi band beginning at 6 p.m., and girls dressed in lingerie will be participating in three unique Pinata bashings filled with Love Jones lingerie. Take a Plunge Into The Mystical World Of Cirque du Soleil’s Mystere

by Denise Almas

The circus is coming. The circus is coming! Don’t be late or you may find yourself following an unconventional looking clown instead of an usher to your seat — or perhaps someone else’s seat. Thus begins the stunning and surrealistic Cirque du Soleil production of Mystere. As soon as the doors close, the ringmaster takes over and the true action begins with a baby playing ball and looking for his “papa”. After finding a “papa” in the audience, the story begins to unfold in a vibrant and visually stimulating performance.

With the exit of the ringmaster, the performers come alive with unusual costumes, dancing, and death defying acts that only highly trained professionals could deliver with poise, grace, and beauty. As music heightens the performances, these athletes fly through the air, balance on top of each other, and bring to life the mysteries of human emotion and capabilities. Without missing a beat, these international athletes perform feats such as the aerial high bar, bungee, and Chinese Poles.

Elton John Songs Improve With Time In Red Piano

by Lincoln Hudson

Stepping out onto the stage at Caesars Palace one can only gasp at the enormous enigma that Sir Elton John has become. Clearly older and wiser this superb and universal entertainer has lost none of the talent and passion that makes him easily one of the worlds greatest performers.

Red Piano is a magnificent show that beautifully uses the technology of both multi-media and film to tell the story and sub text of his songs. Elton John is not just a talented rock star but he is also quite clearly an Artist whose talent also includes writing hit musicals and adapting opera’s. Most amazing of all I find is the forever deepening sub text of his songs that go back almost thirty years.

Gambling Talk: The King and I Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. Neither Lady M nor the King ever had to worry about announcing themselves, or about reservations. They just showed up whenever they felt like it. In this case, the King had a problem with Lady M, and so the casino thought they had a problem. But the King was very well adjusted. He wasnÆt fretting about it. He simply did whatever it was that he did in his suite, and when Lady M finally left, he came down to play his machines.á

Me being there must have, at first, seemed like it was going to be another problem for everybody, but the KingÆs graciousness and understanding resolved the situation and rendered a potential problem totally moot. I was actually quite impressed by him, the way he acted, and his royal persona. Click to Read Complete Article…

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Just reading your news letter and especially the part about the planes. This bit made me smile: “However, many of you are flying 12-16 hours to get here and that commitment to come visit isn’t lost on us either.”á

Not lost on you but for many of us Brits who used to come over regularly ( I came at least once a year ) we’ve decided that enough is enough and we are no longer prepared to queue for two hours or more once we get off the plane at Chicago or Atlanta or Washington, as we crawl towards the Immigration desk where we are finger printed and photographed.á

12 hours on a plane, then two hours to pass thru Chicago. Normally you miss your connecting flight to Vegas and then have to kill another 3 or 4 hours before making the next 3 hour leg of the journey.

I tried going direct last time ( not a lot of cheap direct flights for those of us living in the North of England ) and the wait to pass thru Immigration at McCarran was nearly two hours as well. I love Vegas but I just can’t do the immigration- Homeland security bit any more.

Regards,

Dave Kendall

Ted Responds:

I appreciate the note and understand the hassle. We call the TSA here the Transportation Screw-Up Administration. And something should be done to speed up the immigration lines here, especially with the number of international flights.

May I suggest sending the same note you sent me to our local paper as a letter to the editor? They have even an bigger voice than I do (politicians generally don’t read tourism publications like ours, but they read the newspaper). You can even submit it online at
http://www.reviewjournal.com/about/print/press/letterstoeditor.html

In fact, I suggest all of our international readers frustrated about this to spend just a couple of minutes doing so. A barrage of complaints will have to be noticed by our newspaper and it might even create extra coverage (or a feature story) that the politicians can’t ignore.

My husband and I have been coming to Vegas for the past 15 years and if you can believe it our latest trip in April/08 is the first time we have been to Fremont Street and we fell in love with it.

My questions is this-is Fremont Street a safe place to stay for a few days at one of their hotel/casinos? This concern for safety has been the reason we have never ventured downtown before now but we spent 3 days of our trip playing/eating/shopping/enjoying the shows during our latest visit and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Keep up all the wonderful work you all on the newsletter, we look forward to it and have learned so much from it. Thanks so much,

Wayne and Sandy M.
Rochester, NH

Ted Responds:

Downtown is as safe as The Strip provided you stay in the tourism areas. But one should never wander off (on foot) well away from normal tourism areas anywhere unless they specifically know the area. The upside of downtown is the more reasonable priced rooms, food, and entertainment. Also, the casinos are all right next to each other. No long walks when you want to change scenery.

The downside is the bus or cab right to The Strip. What many do is buy an all day pass on The Deuce (bus running from downtown to The Strip every few minutes, 24/7). For those looking at the price of airfare and Strip hotel rooms and cringing but still really wanting to come visit, I suggest this: Stay downtown where you’ll still find the Vegas that everyone used to talk about where prices are much easier on the wallet.

Do you have any insight into valet parking at Las Vegas hotels? Reason, we were in town a week ago and valet parked at every hotel. Our camera and GPS unit were stolen from our car and the only time it was unlocked is when we valet parked.á

We didn’t discover they were missing until a couple of days later when we went to use them and there is no damage on the car. Is this a problem in Las Vegas? Any ideas of what can be done? Any help would be appreciated.

Evelyn Dotson

Ted Responds:

This is the first time we’ve had anyone bring this issue up in the 9 years of the newsletter so it probably isn’t widespread. Valet parkers make really good money and would be stupid to jeopardize it. Also, they have casino surveillance cameras on them pretty much at all times.

However, it is a good reminder for people to check their stuff after they valet. If something is missing, security can roll back all the cameras that your car was on and probably catch who did it. If you know the license plate on the car you were driving, you can write the property and tell them your problem. Don’t delay as I don’t know how long they keep surveillance video.

In the future… for any theft on a casino property (purse/wallet theft or anything): Keep track of your stuff the best you can (so you know when it is missing) and report any theft as soon as possible. Pretty good chance they can roll some video back and try to see who did it. At the very least, they can then keep an eye out for the thief.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! What a wild, wacky, weird week in weather. This past Monday we hit 108 degrees (F) with Tuesday checking in at 101. The 108 was one degree shy of an all-time May record.

However… as I write this on Friday afternoon we’re experiencing scattered showers and a “balmy” 63. Average high for May? 88 degrees.

Free Wi-Fi and slots for fun are two of the things that make Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport the second highest airport in a recent J.D. Power survey. Actually, the survey really studies cleanliness, ease-of-use, parking, and similar. But the free Wi-Fi and plenty of slot machines (plus a pretty decent restaurant selection) doesn’t hurt!

Unlucky $50 bills – NASCAR Racer and Las Vegas native Kyle Busch turned down a $50 bill from the outgoing speedway president of Charlotte Motor Speedway this past week. Speedway president Humpy Wheeler was handing out personally signed $50 bills to various drivers as a going-away souvenir.

So what’s the big deal? Long time Las Vegas gamblers have always been superstitions about $50 bills, considering them bad luck. I’ve personally seen people sit out a hand of blackjack or call their craps bets off when a $50 bill has been placed on the table.

I’m not sure of the origins of this notion, but I’ve always made it a point to change a $50 at the casino cage if I was going to play a table game. Bottom Line: Next time you put down a $50, now you’ll know why if some funny looks come your way!

Thinking of moving here? Paying cash for your house will get you a great deal, but don’t expect any easy mortgages out there. Lenders got burned so bad here in Nevada that experts guess it will be early 2010 before lenders lighten up on Nevada home loans. Plus, during tight times when hiring is light, new residents find themselves at the bottom of the job heap.

Thinking of visiting? Plenty of deals to be had! However, don’t expect an empty Las Vegas. áThe lower room rates are keeping the rooms full and that money you save on the room helps offset the gas costs or airfare to get here. Check out all the current special prices that ouráfriends at Las Vegas Hotel Deals are offering right now.

Mamma Mia! Keeps You On The Edge Of Your Seat

by Denise Almas

With your toes tapping until the very end, the story is both delightful and, at times, mysterious.

As told through the energetic music of Abba, this big fat Greek island wedding is a comical look at how the women’s liberation movement affected two generations. Though the audience is warned of the large amounts of spandex and late 70’s garb, the music and talented performers bring to life a contemporary view of a culturally interesting time.

Having no information about the true identify of her father, Sophie, the blushing 20 year old bride-to-be, invites the three men her mother had written about in her 1979 diary to her upcoming wedding. This is the backdrop to the captivating musical Mamma Mia, a story of a young woman who attempts to find her father and her own identity at a pivotal moment in her life. Sophie’s mother, Donna, who is also unsure of the identity of her daughter’s father, is upset by the unexpected arrival of all three men the day before the wedding.

Trent Carlini Is… Elvis In Las Vegas

by T. Feld

A shoe-polish black forelock dangles precariously over his forehead. The hips gyrate and swivel with unerring accuracy. His eyes beckon the crowd with a knowing twinkle. The upper lip curls into a familiar quiver. Showcasing a powerful vocal range throughout all the standard hits, you may think Elvis really is in the building after seeing Trent Carlini do his thing at the Sahara Showroom.

More than just an impersonator or tribute performer, this son of Italian immigrants breathes life back into the King himself by uncannily recreating the music, mood and moves of an authentic Presley performance. An audience spanning generations filled the 800 seat venue nearly to capacity at a recent Saturday night show that evoked the spirit of a genuine Elvis Presley concert, complete with screaming, swooning women rushing the stage for a chance to touch their idol.

Gambling Talk: The King and I – with Victor H. Royer. Back in the days of grand and glorious Hollywood, there was once a famous motion picture made, based on a Broadway play, starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. It was the title of my story here — The King and I. As much as I would have liked to be either a King, or at least Yul Brynner — I actually always fancied myself either as Elvis, or Jerry Lewis, or perhaps Jack Benny — I did once have a close encounter with royalty. This was many years ago, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, back in those days when Las Vegas was still considered ôold Vegasö. This was a time when you still could drive up and down the strip at two oÆclock in the afternoon at 55 mph, and barely see three or four other cars. Click to Read Complete Article…

Members Mania – We Love Our Readers!

Hi There Ted,We have just returned to U. K. after 14 days in Vegas. What a place, had a fantastic time saw some great shows, we got The Deuce and went up and down strip. everyone there are friendly helpful and they offer you a seat if your a bit of a an old codger [used to do that in UK once]á

Iálove magic and saw some great shows but the man to take top prize must go to Steve Wyrick and what a show he puts on amazing. I was very disappointed with Penn and Teller, just a couple of cheap tricks and the bullet trick which they have been doing for years.á

Even the free shows were great especially T.I. Pirate Show we are planning a return in September.Denny Brown

Ted Responds:

Always happy to hear great trip reports! We’ll be sending a writer to check out Steve Wyrick soon. I saw him years ago at The Sahara and had a lot of fun.

Hi Ted,Just wanted to say i love your newsletter! i went to Las Vegas two years ago with two of the girls from work, and am returning this fall with my youngest daughter who is 35.When can we find out if Elton John will have dates the end of October? We arrive on the 28th and leave for home November 1. Thanks and keep up the good work.Marsha
Auburn Hills,MI,

Ted Responds:

We always post concert and event dates when we get them and we add new concert dates every week. Just scroll down the right side of the newsletter every issue to see what is playing.

Also, don’t forget to tell friends and family that enjoy Las Vegas to go to AccessVegas.com and subscribe. We rely on word-of-mouth, and the more subscribers we have the better we can continue to providing the kind of info we do!

My husband and I just returned from our yearly vacation to Vegas. We always stay downtown at the 4 Queens, this may not be for the upper class folks but let me tell you, they have been good to us. Service is good, staff is friendly and the video poker there is our favorite.áWe both hit a royal flush while we were there. The strip is nice to see but there’s nothing like “Ole Vegas” I have been going there since 1977 and look forward to it every year as much as I did the first trip. Keep up the good work, I look forward to your newsletter!!! Thanks so much Jeanette from NYTed Responds:

Thanks for the great note and congratulations on the royal flush! I still love downtown, and the Four Queens has undergone some great renovations. For all of the doom-and-gloom predictions about the future of Las Vegas tourism, the reality is that things are really picking up downtown. News Editor Mark Jacobs had his parents in town last week, and everyone couldn’t believe how busy downtown was on a Wednesday night.

Because times are tight for many in the United States, visitors are rediscovering the value offered downtown. Plus, it is a little easier on the feet. For those who have never been downtown, imagine four main blocks (plus a number of side blocks) with casinos, restaurants, and bars side-by-side-by-side.

Even though your trip is done, certainly feel free to stay subscribed. Many do just to glance through and keep up on what’s happening here.

Three or four years ago I enjoyed seeing Rick Thomas the Magician at the Tropicana. Then the next year I saw him at the Stardust. Last year I again was able to see him at The Orleans. This year (In February) I was unable to find any performances by Rich Thomas.áDo you know if he will ever be back in Las Vegas again (or was he there in February and I couldn’t find his performances)? I really enjoyed his act and his performances were very reasonable compared to other more famous magicians. Thank you. Mike HeadyTed Responds:

No clue. His siteáwww.rickthomas.com has nothing new on it. We enjoyed his show also. As usual, we’ll publish info right away if he gets a new show here.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! A little muggy and smoky this week as western wildfires from far away send a little smoke our way and we continue to flirt with the 100 degree mark. No need to bring a coat or a sweater between now and sometime in September. The nights aren’t dipping below the mid-60’s F.

There has been some confusion over where and when Donny and Marie are playing here in Las Vegas. Prior to their agreement to play a prolonged run at The Flamingo, the brother/sister duo had a week of shows planned at the MGM.

Here are the actual dates for each with ticket links:

The Las Vegas is in a recession story has been parroted by journalist after journalist and is getting old. What is happening in Las Vegas tourism is not at all out of step with the ups and downs of past decades. Hotels are running at 95% occupancy. (Drive down The Strip on a Saturday night and tell me how much elbow room you have).

For those interested in my detailed analysis, I did a significant blog post about this at Las Vegas Is Not In A Recession… Puhleeeze

A rainbow over Las Vegas! Clouds are rare here and rainbows even more rare. Last month, we were out running errands and happened to see some of the following sites while over near McCarran (Las Vegas) airport:

Las Vegas Rainbow

Many will recognize this scene, taken as you are on Tropicana just before you make the right turn to Paradise Rd. headed to the airport for that trip home. Click on either photo to see a few more great photos of the rainbow, rich hued clouds, and airplanes.

Airplane taking off from Las Vegas

This photo is very important to us here at AccessVegas.com. Almost daily, we peer up and watch planes overhead bringing you to and from Las Vegas.

Sure, we like airplanes. But it goes well beyond that. There very well could be you (our readers) on each flight and the rigors of flying are not lost on us. Our United States readers are paying top dollar to fly in a sub-par airline market to come visit here.

Our international visitors have the luxury of using the worthless dollar to help deflect the cost of the trip. However, many of you are flying 12-16 hours to get here and that commitment to come visit isn’t lost on us either.

Next time you are on approach into Las Vegas… feeling that giddy excitement of the fun to come… we just may be watching from the ground. Content and happy with the part we play to enhance your trip here.

Enjoy This Issue!

American Superstars – The Biggest Stars Live

By Guy Chapman

Elvis Presley. áTim McGraw. áRod Stewart. áChristina Aguilera. áMichael Jackson. áThese five names are considered to be some of the most popular and well-known acts in the music industry.á

Each artist on their own is able to command a sizable ticket price when going to see them in concert, but on the Las Vegas Strip, there’s a way to see all five of these acts in one show… or close enough to provide an entertaining spectacle of lights, dance and song. áWith the “American Superstars” show at the Stratosphere, this production showcases an entertaining group of tribute artists that provides a concert that wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

The World According Ronn Lucas

By DW Grant

In Ronn Lucas’s world anything can argue with you; dragons, microphones, socks, feet, bare hands, and even some audience members. The 90 minute show, on stage almost everyday at 1 PM at the Thunder Room at the Excalibur Hotel is a fun world for both children and adults.

But the afternoon really belongs to his collection of partners, some he brings out of a trunk and some he brings up from the audience. Buffalo Billy flirts with the ladies in the front seats and duets “Row Your Boat” with Ronn, even though Ronn tries to warn him a ventriloquist can not duet with his dummy. Amazingly they do it anyway, and we can┤t help but love it.

For children Ronn offers “Scorch,” the teenage dragon, trashing-talking his master and singing songs like “Teenager in Love” and rapping other teen faves.

Gambling Talk: The Lady M – Part Two – with Victor H. Royer. “See those machines?” he asked, pointing to the three new machines that were brought over. I nodded. “These are $500 machines,” he continued. “That’s $500 per token! And each machine takes three of them. That’s $1,500 per pull, on three machines at the same time. She bets $4,500 per pull. It takes about one minute for her to make these pulls. There are 60 minutes per hour, right? This means she puts in $270,000 per hour! Actually, given distractions, hand-pays, and so on, it averages to about $230,000 to $250,000 per hour. Every hour. And she plays for eight to twelve hours per session. That’s pretty good for one player.” Click to Read Complete Article…

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello From Las Vegas! Back after a scheduled week off. Weather is a perfect 85/65 F. No better time to enjoy walking The Strip and Downtown or get a round of golf in.

Jersey Boys opened with a bang at Palazzo. The night was extra special: Jersey Boys is the award-winning musical that tells the story of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons and Frankie Valli was in attendance celebrating his 74’th birthday!

Valli was joined by the remaining original Four Seasons – legendary songwriter & producer Bob Gaudio and Las Vegas resident Tommy DeVito. Wayne Brady, John Cleese, Nigel Lythgoe, John O’Hurley, Sex & the City’s Willie Garson, Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie, Comedienne Rita Rudner and Palazzo owner Sheldon Adelson were also on hand.

Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and is the story of how a group of blue-collar guys became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide. Many of the biggest hits including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Oh, What a Night,” are performed.

Jimmy Buffett heads back to Las Vegas for his two annual shows on October 18 & 25 as part of Jimmy Buffett’s “The Year Of Still Here” Tour 2008. Parrotheads fly in from around the world for one (or both) of these shows and the Las Vegas Strip turns into a Parrothead Paradise.

A few issues ago, a reader asked about good Chinese food and we received a number of replies:

  • Adrienne & Bill Sheneman wrote: My choice for excellent Chinese Cuisine is Ping Pang Pong at the Gold Coast. Real Chinese Food prepared and served properly. A large percentage of their clientele is Asian so they must be doing things the way Mom used to.
  • Julie wrote: A great but expensive Chinese restaurant is Pearl at MGM Grand. Their Almond Crusted Lemon Chicken is fabulous.
  • Gail Hubbard wrote: I enjoy dining at Ming’s Table located in Harrah’s. It has a great variety of dishes and is reasonably priced. The service is excellent. The dining area is rather small, but I find that seating is easy to get in “off hours”.

One of the most frequent questions we get is about seeing jazz here in Las Vegas. All events are complimentary (no admission charge):

American’s Got Talent is auditioning this coming Sunday May 11 at the Planet Hollywood Performing Arts Theatre. Auditions will be taped for future use on the show. Tapings are open to the public and take place at 10 AM and 3 PM. Producers have been quoted as saying that anyone arriving an hour before taping should be able to get in. Makes sense as the auditorium holds about 7000 people.

Enjoy This Issue!

Fab Four Mania Replicates Every Beatles Note Live

by Terri Feld

“Help! I need somebody…” to tell me, is it real or is it lip-synching?! “Beatlemania” redux in this incredible live performance that replicates every note in the original key. Playing nightly (Mon-Sat. 7:00pm) in the Sahara Showroom, David Saxe’s current Las Vegas production, “Fab Four Mania”, does, however, distinguish itself from the late 70’s Broadway hit “Beatlemania”.

Entering the showroom off the Party Pit Blackjack lounge which boasts lava lamps, tie-dye t-shirted dealers and a Beatles soundtrack (all in full swing when the show lets out at 8:15PM), show-goers immediately get the vibe, taking a photo-op in front of the groovy, painted VW mini-bus located at the theater entrance. Beatles trivia questions displayed on large monitors stage right and left amuse and occasionally stump audience members already seated, awaiting the show’s start.

Mega Bubble – An Ethereal And Magical Quality Like Nothing Else

(Editors Note: The name of this show just recently changed to Gazillion Bubble Show. It is the same show).

by Devon Brooke Clasen

Finding even a modicum of innocence in “Sin City” is a challenging feat to be sure, but a world of innocence, wonder and enchantment awaits visitors to the Mega Bubble Show, playing in the Steve Wyrick Theatre in Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile shops from Thursday through Sunday at 3 p.m., with an additional 11 a.m. show on Saturday and 1 p.m. shows on Saturday and Sunday.

Eventually the novelty wears off and as we grow up, bubbles receive nary a thought… The Mega Bubble Show reintroduces us to the beguiling fascination of the bubble, which we recognized and appreciated as children and perhaps need the occasional reminder of as adults.

Gambling Talk: The Lady M – with Victor H. Royer. It was a cold January day, the week after the New Year’s crush of tourists. Among the real gamblers and high rollers, the early weeks in January are often the times when they like to come and play. For any type of gaming, other than live poker, coming to a casino after all the crowds have left is better, and often more profitable. High-stakes players like to be the center of attention, but at the same time most of them dislike being bothered by the gawkers and onlookers. Click to Read Complete Article…

I am coming to Las Vegas the end of March. What are the streets that go to downtown(not on the freeway). Last time I was there the driver turned west on Tropicana to I 15 and then to downtown. Seemed a long way out of the way than what I had done before with other cabs.

I would like to tell them where to go and not the long way IF they will listen to me. I did tell the other driver that I did not want to go the tunnel and he seemed upset so when we got to Tropicana and he turned to the west, I did not have the nerve to tell him otherwise as he said he always took the tunnel. Need a good map for me to give to them! Otherwise the tip will be minimal.

Thanks for all the good things in ACCESSVEGAS.com.

Jane

You referred to this in a reply in the last newsletter. Can you please tell me more about long hauling? I was just in Vegas last week, and it seemed that the cab ride cost a whole lot more than the last time I visited. We were going to the Mirage, and the cabbie took the freeway, something that had never happened before, and it didn’t seem right. Did we get long hauled, and how do we avoid that in the future?
Thanks!

I-15 runs parallel to The Strip all the way to downtown. It is a couple of miles longer, but usually quicker. Many in a rental car my prefer to scoot over to Paradise (east of The Strip) and head north. Paradise basically ends at The Stratosphere where you can get back on Las Vegas Blvd. (The Strip) for the rest of the trip downtown.

The tunnel only applies if you are going to or from the airport. It is not in the vicinity of The Strip. Unless a cab driver specifically asks your permission, a trip from the airport to any Strip hotel should not involve the freeway. If the cabbie is aware of a serious and unusual traffic issue that makes the tunnel option more attractive, your driver should specifically note such.

We have a map section in beta at http://maps.accessvegas.com. The maps are working and ready to go. We still have to put some touches on the design.

I am planning to visit Vegas in Dec for about a week. I understand there is a period (I am not sure whether the week before Christmas or the week after Christmas) where many shows have a dark period.I would be grateful if you would let me know whether it is better to visit during the week before or after Christmas. Many thanks.By the way I love your newsletter. Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Ted Responds:

Both, although some shows start to get back going after Christmas. The week before Christmas is the slowest week of the year, usually with the lowest room rates.
