We took a recent visit to the Rio Carnival Buffet (not to be confused with their Seafood Buffet which we reviewed at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-02-02.htm ) and found it to be quite improved. Still spendy at $11 for lunch and $14 for dinner, but the quality is back making it more worth the money. The Stratosphere Tower is serving lunch in the Top of the World restaurant, and the $6-12 price range gives you all the view for a fraction of dinner. DOWNTOWN TO GROW – The City of Las Vegas and Lehman Brothers Holdings, Inc. have reached an agreement that gives the City a key 61-acre parcel of land immediately west of downtown. FEATURE STORY: Jubilee!

jubilee.jpg (35641 bytes) “Don Arden’s Jubilee!” at Bally’s has been a staple on the Las Vegas strip since 1981, and with good reason. This is very much a throwback to the television variety shows of 30 years ago, featuring an impressive array of song, dance, theatrics, magic, and specialty acts.

Act 1 features all of the almost 100 singers, dancers and showgirls in seven scenes that remind us of the golden age of Hollywood musicals (with the exception of the topless showgirls). This act continues to build into a crescendo of entertainment that covers the entire stage, and gives us a taste of what is to come.

Act 3 entitled “Samson and Delilah!” was a loose theatrical interpretation, featuring some of the very elaborate staging that this Jubilee! is famous for. The story of lust and deceit featured risquÚ costumes on both the male and female singers and dancers, recreating the decadence of that period. As expected, Samsom brought down the set in a burst of fire and falling debris.

Act 2 and Act 4 were perhaps the weak points. Act 2 features the balancing artistry of Jean Nedel. This man’s upper body strength is phenomenal, as he balances with his hands and arms on dual and single poles with his entire body moving and twisting above him. But … once you’ve seen it, you’ve seen it, and this segment could be shortened. Act 4 was the first of two by feature magician Dirk Arthur, featuring standard illusions and a couple of his exotic leopards and tigers. A piece of close up magic was broadcast large-screen as he performed it so that everyone could see, but between the poor lighting and picture quality, most of us were straining to see what would have otherwise been a great trick in a more intimate setting.

Act 5 picked right back up again with the “Titanic.” With impressive staging and props, we are taken on a journey aboard the ill-fated voyage with a spellbinding tribute to the French follies shows of old. The replication of the ships grand ballroom provides fun and frolic that is interrupted by news that the Titanic has hit an iceberg. The stage is transformed into the engine room in a flood of water as havoc breaks loose and the ship sinks in grand form. This must be seen!

Act 6 brings back Dirk Arthur, and this time he gets the ball rolling with a number of incredible illusions. He escapes a rock cutting drill, makes a tiger vanish in thin air from a cage above the stage, makes a sports car levitate and vanish, and finishes by making a helicopter appear. He certainly was saving the best for last!

Act 7 is “The Finale,” a formal ballroom-based tribute to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers with nods to Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and Gershwin full of music, romance, impressive costumes, singing, and dancing.

If you want to see one traditional Las Vegas show, it would be hard to pick between Jubilee! and Follies Bergere (reviewed at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-03-29.htm ). Follies has more of a warm “good mood” vibe to it, and relies more on a “wink, wink” sexiness, the charisma of the hosts, and comedy. Jubilee! is the full-scale variety show (minus comedy) that goes for an over-the-top feel in every category. You shouldn’t be disappointed by either.

Jubilee! is presented at Bally’s twice nightly at 7:30PM and 10:30 PM, dark Tuesdays. Tickets range from $50-60 plus fees, and this is an adult show because of topless and risquÚ costumes. As a born and raised Oregonian, I too have visited an Oregon Indian casino and thought that the coinless system they use is a bad joke. I’m with the rest of you — I want to hear those coins hit, and enjoy scooping them up!

FEATURE STORY: Crazy Girls

crazy-girls-02.jpg (11569 bytes) This is an hour of old style burlesque and raunchy comedy that doesn’t pretend to be anything else. The costumes and sets change as the dancers “sing” (the voices are taped) and dance to both modern hit songs as well as a couple of vintage “tongue-in-cheek” numbers. Except for the first set, they are topless throughout the entire show.

Carole Montgomery is the MC and also performs short comedy pieces during set and costume changes. Her style? Think of a female version of the shock comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay. The talk is all sex, and nothing is sacred. It was “revenge” of a sort, with many of the jokes having the women howling with laughter poking fun at men.

crazy-girls-03.jpg (11802 bytes) If you are coming to town, you promised your wife you wouldn’t go to a strip club (probably a good idea — those places are designed to part you with your money faster than the roulette table), and you and the guys are looking for something a little racy, this fits the bill. There were also a significant number of couples who seemed to be enjoying the show quite a bit. In an age of “child friendly” Las Vegas and production shows for all ages, this does put some of the sin back in “Sin City.”

This week, a letter from the editor!

Because I make my living online, people regularly express concerns and ask me about purchasing things on the internet. In fact, a recent national publication poll noted that 41% of all people online don’t buy online because they are scared their credit card number and info will be stolen. I answer by saying …

Let’s look at two purchases — one online and one off:

1. Offline – You see an infomercial on TV, something you like in a catalog, or book a hotel room over the phone (after spending hours on the phone checking rates, the time on hold, the processing time, etc.). You call up and talk to a near minimum wage employee whom you will never meet, and you reveal your name, address, phone number, credit card number and expiration date to this live human.

2. Online – You go to a site like http://www.mysimon.com (not an advertiser, just an example) or our partner Hotel Reservations Network at http://www.hoteldiscounts.com/cgi-bin/pickcity?SID=IVC&LKF=IVC where you can compare the lowest prices for a product in one click. A computer confirms availability instantly. You enter your sensitive information and it is securely delivered to another computer (not a human) who confirms it with a third computer at the credit card company, approves the purchase, and confirms your purchase about 90 seconds after clicking the “buy” button.

I realize that many will say “you are biased because of your business,” but it’s actually the other way around. A number of years ago, I worked for a shipping company who fired an employee for using customer credit card info to call phone sex numbers. Besides the speed and ease, I doubt that a computer somewhere is going to run off and commit fraud with your credit card! Also, I was booking all my airline flights online well before I signed any deals to offer online reservations.

I have met people who have been victims of credit card fraud, but none from an online transaction. I comfortably have purchased books, office supplies, furniture, sundries and more online the past year without a glitch. Just food for thought next time you worry about online security!

FEATURE STORY: Shark Reef

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-2.jpg (24789 bytes) Have you ever been to one of those seaside aquariums? “Baby, this ain’t one of those.” Mandalay Bay’s new Shark Reef features some of the most exotic and dangerous aquatic animals in the world and puts you right in the middle of it. They have built one of North America’s largest displays of sharks and other salt water predators.

The first part of the tour is through a tropical jungle, complete with lush green surroundings. You weave your way through a maze of a number of reptile displays, giving you possibly the closest ever safe look you’ll ever have at these intimidating creatures.

From there, you continue to walk through what looks like an ancient temple that has been claimed by the sea, eventually ending up underwater in part of a wrecked ship, surrounded by 1.6 million gallons of ocean water right here in the middle of our desert. These dangerous sharks, schools of fish, and displays of some of the most exotic marine life known to man aren’t just beside you, but above and below you as you walk through clear walls, floors and tunnels. (For the claustrophobic, let me note that the central rooms in the aquarium are very large — this isn’t like being stuck in an elevator).

Sharks: Include blacktip reef sharks, bonnethead sharks, nurse sharks and lemon sharks. Some species of sharks at Shark Reef will grow to be more than 12 feet long.

Tropical and Fresh Water Fish: Include several species of angelfish, puffer fish and tang fish. Venomous tropical fishes include such species as the radiated lionfish and coral catfish.

Reptiles: Crocodiles, green sea turtles and ravenous water monitors are among the reptile species displayed at Shark Reef.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-4.jpg (27925 bytes) Eels/Marine Invertebrates/Rays: Eels, invertebrates and rays each have exhibits to showcase their species at Shark Reef Moray eels, southern stingrays and hundreds of moon jellyfish are among these creatures.

We have a few minor complaints. Shark Reef is quite a hike from the main casino area (past the pool, the arena, convention area and then a little farther). They are looking to expand the resort in that part of the property, which will eventually feature a duplicate of their guests-only swimming area that will be open to the public. We hope they have some airport style people movers in the plans also.

mandalay-bay-shark-reef-5.jpg (15684 bytes) There are flat screen monitors throughout the display but they don’t say much. Perhaps more informative multimedia displays are planned. Also, the $12.95 price was drawing a few grumbles from people at the ticket booth (although none once they were inside). Perhaps a $10 ticket price in line with the Secret Gardens of Siegfried and Roy would be in order. Still, it is a pretty captivating experience and if you have even a remote interest in natures more exotic displays, it will be money well spent. There were plenty of children and teens who were thoroughly enjoying it but it left us adults just as much in awe.

Shark Reef is at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. Open daily from 10 AM until 11 PM, admission is $12.95. Children 12 and under and Nevada residents with ID are $9.95.

A couple of new prime-time TV shows set in Las Vegas debut this fall. “C.S.I” on CBS will be a cop show airing Friday nights before Nash Bridges (which had a great 2-part Vegas season finale) and the WB’s “Nikki” will be about an aspiring showgirl whose husband is trying to become a professional wrestler. (It sounds like a fun show, but I personally put the over/under on that one at about 13 weeks.) FEATURE STORY: Steve Wynn: Running Scared (book review)

While our newsletter appeals to hard-core Vegas visitors wanting to keep up on the latest, our feedback indicates that a number of you have subscribed in anticipation of your very first trip. You might read each week, going “What is all the fuss over this Steve Wynn guy, and who cares”?

Mr. Wynn is the man many feel responsible for inventing the new, high class Las Vegas. He was the brains and the CEO behind the Golden Nugget downtown, then built The Mirage at a time when Las Vegas was a town of cheap buffets, cheap rooms, smoky casinos with low ceilings — much more “Sin City” than it is today.

He has had his share of ups and downs, the latest being the buyout of Mirage Resorts company he built and his latest venture, the purchase of the Desert Inn. The book doesn’t cover the Bellagio era, nor the recent happenings.

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John L. Smith set out to write Running Scared: The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn in 1994, and two lawsuits have resulted. The interesting thing is that the book in nowhere near as damning as one would think would bother the casino mogul, although it doesn’t paint him as a choirboy.

Alleged are friendships and close business relationships with people who are one step away from the mob and / or have had a history of very serious trouble with the police. His temper is chronicled, as well as purported sexual conquests running into the thousands with women ranging from celebrities to keno runners. It is a keen look at what it’s like to be what many consider (at least had up until recently) “the most powerful man in Nevada.”

The downside is that some there isn’t the in-depth analysis of how he pulled off some of his bigger business deals, but more of a “he knew these people that introduced him to these people who financed him” kind of thing. However, those details were probably kept to a minimum to provide an interesting read, and interesting it is. You get a pretty complete feel for how he grew up, developed his charm and ego, and how he is possibly the greatest salesman ever to step foot inside the state.

For those of you who long for stories on the old mob days, the alleged connections to organized crime figures provides quite a backdrop, dating back to the days of his father who ran bingo halls all over the eastern seaboard. If you love to soak up Las Vegas, especially the flash and dash, and hear about how one man took his “over-the-top” vision and made it a reality in everything he built, you’ll enjoy this. From his revamp of the Golden Nugget to the ostentatious Shadow Creek golf course (which had a membership of 1 — Mr. Wynn himself), it is covered.

If you are familiar with him, this book isn’t going to change your mind. Those that love him see it as a terrible account of the man who made Las Vegas what it is, and those who hate what they feel are his many abuses of power and being “above the law” will find plenty to fuel their fire.

Running Scared; The life and Treacherous Times of Casino King Steve Wynn is 330 pages, hardback and sells for $24 — not cheap, but less than 2 1/2 rolls of quarters (in Las Vegas terms). It’s a riveting read that I had trouble putting down, and I’d suggest it as a great way to get hyped on that next long car ride or plane flight here. Spring and fall are prime times here with the great weather (often pool weather while the rest of the country is burning heating oil). When you add in events and conventions, the demand drives up the price. We strongly suggest adding http://www.accessvegas.com/events.htm to your favorites (AOL / WebTV) or bookmarks so you see which days or weeks have less convention traffic.

The tourism areas of Las Vegas (as well as the city in general) are very safe. Casinos have both uniformed and plainclothes security inside and out. Plus, cameras are aimed at virtually every corner of the property, from the front door (including outside) to the back. The general safety precautions you take on any vacation should suit you well here. The only problem I have ever encountered in any tourist areas are the panhandlers downtown, and I just ignore them and keep walking. There is too much security for them to start yelling at you, or get in your face.

I would suggest not walking more than one block from the Fremont St. Experience downtown. Trust me, there is nothing to see outside the very safe casino areas, and once you get a few blocks from the tourist areas, downtown isn’t the most crime free. I also wouldn’t suggest wandering off down side streets on the Strip more than a block or two. While not a high crime area, there is no reason to take chances. The exceptions are generally Convention Center Drive from Stardust to the convention center, Flamingo Rd west to The Rio or east to The Maxim and Ellis Island, and Tropicana east to San Remo and Motel 6.

I’m not saying that everything else is a high crime area, but it’s always safer to stay in the tourist areas where there are lots of people around when in an unfamiliar city.

Hello from my beautiful (and unusually warm) hometown of Portland, OR where I’m up enjoying a week with my family. And yes, even I miss Las Vegas after being away a few days.

Don Budlong of Winnipeg, MB Canada was kind enough to send us in his thoughts on the shows he saw on his recent Las Vegas trip. While we can’t print all input, we enjoy hearing from you — your feedback and reports help us make this a better newsletter for all!

FEATURE STORY: Show Reports

Hi: Returned home last week from a 10 day visit to Las Vegas. Was a
winning trip, so the cash flow resulted in seeing 6 shows. Thought I
would share my personal opinion with your readers.

Lance Burton (Monte Carlo: $50): This was a show I was really looking
forward to, it came highly recommended and I love magic.
Unfortunately, I can’t say that it was worth the money. The illusions
are the same as you will see in just about any magic act, except for
his trademark opening. It may have been an off night, but there was
no personality from Mr. Burton as it appeared he as just walking
through the act. It may be time for a refreshing of the production to
keep things interesting for him. With the variety of magic to choose
from in Las Vegas, and the fact that there really are only 5 or 6
illusions, it is packaging and personality that will lead to one
rising above the others.

The Illusionary Magic of Rick Thomas (Tropicana: $16): An afternoon
show well worth the price. Mr. Thomas doesn’t have a lot of fancy
sets, but he tries hard and his personality radiates from the stage.
You will enjoy the Birds and the Big Cats. And, his skill becomes
very evident when he performs the often seen “Chinese Rings” with
grace and class. I have to give this one 2 thumbs up.

Siegfried & Roy (The Mirage: $90): More Magic. Yes … I paid the price
to see “The Magicians of the Century.” As I said, there really are
only 5 or 6 illusions, and it’s all in the packaging. Well, what
packaging! The show really does defy description. Don’t try to
understand it, just sit back and enjoy it. The price tag is high, but
I don’t think anyone will feel they paid too much by the end of the
show. If you get the chance … go … especially since there is a rumor
that they may only be performing 1 or 2 more years.

Footloose (Rio: $50): I am a big fan of musicals, but unfortunately
found myself looking at my watch a few times (and the show only runs
90 minutes). There are problems with the acting (sort of like a high
school production) and the sound (“Let’s Hear it for the Boy” was
absolutely painful to sit through). Save your money and skip this one
(enjoy the free “Show in the Sky” at the Rio instead)

Stars of the Strip (Lady Luck: $5): Another afternoon delight starring
The Walkers. Humorous impressions of Sonny and Cher, Elvis, Barbra
Striesand, etc. You will enjoy this show and it is real value for the
price. The only draw back is the show room … really just a big
Quonset hut that gets a little too hot when the temperature reaches
100.

Boylesque (The Plaza: $35): I first saw this show about 16 years ago.
It is still a gas. You will laugh and be amazed at the
transformations the guys go through. Yes they lip synch, but that
isn’t all that important. The jokes can be a wee bit blue, but if you
are in that frame of mind you will laugh yourself sore. That’s it.
Just my opinion.

PS. Several weeks ago I wrote asking if anyone knew of a good place
for a Fried Chicken Dinner … similar to the dearly departed “Green
Shack” Well, I can now answer my own question. The Hill Top Supper
Club on Rancho is fantastic. I had the chicken dinner and was smiling
for days. This place is a throw back to the 60’s but it the best way.
The waitresses treat you like family, and the food is plentiful.

SHARK REEF – This new exhibit just opened at Mandalay Bay and we’ve already heard great things. You walk through a 20-foot long acrylic tunnel under part of a main tank holding 1 million gallons of water. Shark Reef features one of North America’s largest displays of sharks and other sea predators.

Much more than a conventional aquarium, Shark Reef is a diverse cross-section of magnificent aquatic creatures, including close to 100 different species of sharks, exotic fish, reptiles and turtles. BREWPUBS – Two more microbreweries have opened up in the last 6 months here in Las Vegas. This is the third and final installment in a three week series on some of the more notable steakhouses in town. I’ll have a quick comparison at the end.FEATURE STORY: Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico

“Bam, Bam, Bam” — If you don’t know who Emeril is, just talk to someone who is into cooking or enjoys the Food TV cable channel. He’s taken “celebrity chef” to a new level with his “macho” cooking style with his signature “Bam” and “Let’s kick it up a notch” verbal stylings.

He is also one of the cooks credited with bringing truly fine dining to Las Vegas. And, fine it is. Rich modern decor, extensive wine availability, servers who call you by name — Las Vegas has come a long way since the days of the $2.99 buffets.

As with many fine restaurants, much is a la cart. Various servings of vegetables and potatoes run from $6 – $7.50. Soups and salads start at $6.50 for the New Orleans Gumbo of the day. Besides your typical selections such as French Onion Soup ($6.50) Caesar Salad (for two, $20.00), Sliced Tomato Salad ($12.00) and Composed Anti-Pasta Salad (market price), more unique items like Organic Baby Greens ($8.50), Baby Arugula, Cheddar Cheese and Apples ($9.00), Creative Soup of the Day (market price) and Wilted Spinach and Fried Mozzarella ($13.00) are available.

Filet Mignon, N.Y. Strip Steak, Ribeye, and Bone In Rib Steak run $28.00 – 36.00. My N.Y. steak was a healthy cut cooked to unbelievable perfection. As expected at this level, the presentation and the service were second to none.

House specialties (most of which include appropriate side dishes) are as follows: Chateaubriand (for two, $65), Charred Dry Aged Beef Sirloin ($30.00), Roasted Double Cut Pork Chop ($26.00), Grilled Creole Marinated Rack of Lamb ($36.00), Pan Roasted Creole Chicken Cordon Blue ($25.00), Maine Lobster (fresh from their tanks, market price), Creative Fish of the Day (Market Price), Saute of Gulf Shrimp and Fresh Pasta ($28.00), Grilled Sweet Barbecued Atlantic Salmon ($27.00), Seared Beef, House Cured Bacon and Maytag White Cheddar En Croute ($28.00), and New Orleans Veal Piccata ($28.00).

This popular restaurant in The Venetian seems to have no slow period. Reservations are a must at (702) 414-3737. They are open daily for lunch from 11:30 AM – 2:00 PM and open for dinner from 5:30 – 10:30 PM (11:00 PM on weekends). The lunch menu varies from dinner and is just slightly less expensive. The full menu is available at the bar, but are you crazy? Save eating at a bar for some corner joint in your city. Enjoy the dining room for a taste of the exquisite food, service and surroundings.

THE VERDICT: In the past three weeks, I have visited Harrah’s Range Steakhouse (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-07.htm ), Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse (reviewed https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/00-06-14.htm ), and Delmonico.

If I had to pick a clear winner, it would be Delmonico. One of the very best meals I have ever been served in my life, but with a price to match. If you are on an average budget, save this one for truly special occasions. If you have no intention of heading downtown, or want the most plush and intimate surroundings, Harrah’s is your stop and probably the best for a romantic dinner and leisurely drinks. Binion’s is a little more down-home — still nice but not as pretentious as the others, and it’s top-floor view of the entire Strip and the Las Vegas Valley makes it a relaxing spot to savor great food.

FEATURE STORY: Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse

Unfortunately, Binion’s Horseshoe Casino hasn’t been in the news for it’s long time reputation of good food and fair gaming lately. The Binion Murder trial has been watched all over the United States.

Others (including us) have grumbled over the loss of many of the great specials like the late night $3 steak special. But the place that family patriarch Benny Binion founded still keeps alive the spirit he brought to his downtown property.

Binion’s Ranch Steakhouse is part of that tradition. This is upscale dining with prime beef and a view to die for while still maintaining that friendly down-home feel you’ve come to expect from Binion’s. If those trendy places where they put more importance on choosing the decorator instead of the chef bug you, this is your place. The decor is nice, reasonably plush, but understated.

Look up to the very top of Binion’s and you see two-story glass wrapped around the top of the building. I used to think those were the high-roller suites. But NO, that is the steakhouse! The view is unique, letting you see over the rest of downtown to the Strip and far beyond.

Service is down-home also. Helpful, but not at all pretentious. Hate those guys at the high-end places with the fake accents and waiters with foreign names (co’mon — they can’t all be Pierre from Paris), you’ll enjoy the “real” feel of the wait staff. Good service, but relaxed and with a smile.

Between generous portion size and the items served with the main course, appetizers aren’t really necessary. However, they are available: Jumbo Gulf Shrimp Cocktail, Scampi A Las Maison, Oysters on the Half Shell, Oysters Rockefeller, and Escargot Bourguignonne. They range from $9.95 to $12.95.

All main courses are served with soup of the day or salad, rice pilaf, baked potato or roasted garlic mashed and warm sourdough bread — a personal favorite. You can order soups or salads: House Salad ($4.95), Caesar Salad ($6.95), French Onion Soup ($4.75), Greek Salad ($9.95) and Crab Chowder served in a sourdough bowl ($5.75)

Specialties are meat, meat, and more meat. A regular cut of prime rib runs $27.00, but splurge for the “Benny Cut” at $32.00 and see if you can eat it all! Other specialties are Broiled Spring Lamb Chops ($28.50), Veal Marlala ($24.00), Broiled Chicken Breasts ($22.00), Steak Diane ($25.00) and Binion’s famous Pepper Steak, a 16 oz. New York Steak rolled in cracked peppercorns, sautÚed and topped with Brandy cream sauce for $30.00.

Steak lovers rejoice! I had the Filet Mignon. 12 oz. that I could almost cut with a fork despite my insistence that they cook it medium well ($28.00). Also available are the New York Steak (16 oz., $27.00), Ribeye (16 oz., $25.00) and the Porterhouse (21 oz. extra-thick cut, $30.00).

Seafood includes Australian Lobster Tail (market price), Alaskan King Crab Legs (2 pounds, $42.50), Scampi A La Maison ($28.50), Braised Halibut Filet ($25.50), and Broiled Salmon ($22.50). Both Surf and Turf (petite filet and rock lobster) and the Petite Filet Mignon and Crab Legs are market price.

You aren’t paying for just the view — the food is excellent also. Go right around sunset. Nothing compares to an unobstructed view, watching the Strip and the entire Las Vegas valley light up while a piece of prime steak dissolves in your mouth. Although we had no problem getting a table at about 8:00 PM on a weeknight unannounced, we suggest reservations at (702) 382-1600 and they are open 5-11 PM.

Good question! Yes and no. We really don’t have one of those huge, “The sky never goes dark for 45 minutes” shows. The Stratosphere is having fireworks again this year. Last year was a let-down as they shot them off from behind the building (not from the Tower) and most people were too close to see them properly. If you go to the Strat, the best view is a couple of blocks down the Strip or back aways in any direction (avoid the neighborhood behind the casino — it’s a high crime area).

There are some pretty good displays around town in the suburbs. They are listed at http://www.lasvegas.com/events/4thofjuly If you have a car, I’d suggest the one at Desert Breeze Park put on by the County. We’ll have more details on the New Years Eve fireworks as they become available.

The company building the high-rise condos behind the El Rancho bought it for $45 million just to get rid of the eyesore for potential buyers, and they are having a “fire sale” before demolishing it. DESERTED INN – is what Steve Wynn referred to his new hotel as in his licensing hearing, and he said that it’s up to him to change all of that. In true Wynn fashion, he’s already outlining plans for a 3000 room, 5-star hotel for the site. He plans to “one-up” Bellagio with a property that centers on elegance instead of a specific theme. How he will finance this remains to be seen, but Wynn has indicated that he will always have 60% or better control and that success won’t necessarily be measured in the bottom line. FEATURE STORY: Harrah’s Range Steakhouse

Harrah’s really spruced up their great center-strip location with a major remodel over the past two years, and our favorite new areas are the outdoor Carnival Bar (to be reviewed at a later date) and The Range Steakhouse. While a quick, one floor elevator ride from the middle of the casino, it is a world apart from the pounding noise and bright colors designed to separate you from your money.

Two story glass windows wrap around the dining and lounge areas providing a panoramic view of The Strip including Caesars and The Mirage. Plenty of lush, dark wood and fine comfortable surroundings pamper the senses without being arrogantly disturbing. Seating is on tiered levels, giving you an unobstructed view regardless of where you sit. Table spacing is surprisingly pleasant … you won’t have to worry about backing your chair into your neighbor’s or having to listen to every conversation around you.

The lounge features gentle live jazz from a pianist or guitarist and is a perfect place to unwind while waiting for your reservation, or a pleasant place to enjoy desert after your meal. It is cigar-friendly, and the high ceilings and swift ventilation assure you won’t offend others.

Bring your appetite, your wallet, and get ready to try something a little out of the norm. Appetizers range from $7.95 for the “Half and Half” of Fanny Bay oysters and half littleneck clams to $13.95 for a traditional shrimp cocktail. Their Southwest Artichoke & Crab Dip is a signature item featuring lump crab, grilled pita chips, and soft pretzels ($11.95). Also available are Roasted Corn Crab Cakes ($12.95), Escargot ($9.95), and Smoked Chicken Quesadilla ($8.95).

Entrees come with salad and a side of their “famous cabernet mushrooms” (quite good) but soups are extra. You can choose between their signature Five Onion Soup with bagel chips and lamented gouda ($5.75) or Brandied Lobster Bisque with Maine lobster and creme fraiche ($7.25).

Their fortes are the steaks, prime rib, and chops ranging from the Double-Cut Pork Loin Chop ($19.95) to the Lamb Rack Chops ($32.95). The 16 oz. Veal Shop with caramelized pearl onions is a treat ($34.95) and the Blackened Rib-Eye Chop ($25.95) is served with pistachio salsa butter. Smaller appetites might prefer the 8 oz. Filet Mignon ($26.95) or the 14 oz. Bone-In Filet ($31.95).

You can add seafood to any entree: 7 oz. Lobster Tail ($19.95), Fried Giant Shrimp ($14.95), or 1/2 lb. King Crab Legs ($13.95).

Seafood and Poultry, while not their specialties are offered for those who’s taste runs away from red meat. Prices range from $18.95 for the Free-Range Grilled Chicken to $53.95 for the Australian Twin Lobster Tails (two 7 oz. cold water tails).

I enjoyed their signature 20 oz. Bone-In New York Strip ($29.95) and a side of Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes. Side orders offered also include Garlic Steak Friens, Asparagus, Giant Baked Potato, “Colossal” Onion rings, Creamed Spinach, or Wild Rice. All sides run $5.25

Service was prompt but not overbearing. My only complaint was that my steak was undercooked. I ordered it medium-well (the waiter confirmed that I was requesting it cooked with just a little pink left) and it was delivered on the medium-rare side. Granted, many of you true steak connoisseurs might be saying “Serves you right to ask for that done to a fine cut of meat”! I was hungry, it tasted fine and I enjoyed it, noting the error later to the wait staff.

We suggest going around or after sunset. Unfortunately, the large picture windows face west and while they have tinted windows and sun-blocking screens in place (retracted after sunset), it doesn’t make for the best view trying to look into the sun.

While no bargain, you get what you pay for, and it’s a nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of the center Strip. Plus, remember the my Vegas adage: Eating is cheaper than losing. If you are on a run of bad luck, toss your money on the dinner table and enjoy yourself!

The implosion has been put off at least until the end of the year. The owner is noting higher interest rates which put a damper on more immediate plans to build his San Francisco themed resort. The other San Francisco themed resort that was being planned for where the shuttered Silver City Casino sits (across from the Stardust) has apparently been scrapped. A Walgreens is scheduled to go in that spot.

Both hotels are owned by the same company and offer run-of-the-mill rooms. Nothing special but adequate. While not one of the newer parts of the Strip, the police have gotten better at enforcing curfew laws. The “bad area” rap has mostly come because a lot of bored teens were hanging out and Slots-of-Fun does sometime have a younger, rowdy crowd. There isn’t anywhere between Circus and Mandalay Bay that I would caution people to avoid. Each hotel has security cameras aimed at the street (not good business is people got mugged before the casino could get your money!) as well as both uniformed and plain clothes security at and near casino entrances.

As always, I would caution against walking more than a couple blocks away from the Strip or Fremont St. Experience. The exceptions are perhaps Convention Center (over to The Beach Nightclub and the convention center) and Flamingo Rd. (west to The Rio and east to The Maxim and Ellis Island).

Supply and demand. I don’t like it either, but guess what: I still pay it for the view and the ambiance (which is about all that there is to see now that Jimmy Hopper has moved on from performing).

When you are up there, you aren’t gambling and even with the spendy drinks (domestic beer starts at about $5), they would rather have you spending more time on the casino floor. Which is also my guess as to why they close down at 3 AM despite an often full house at that hour (especially on weekends).

You only got ripped off if he didn’t pull right on to the strip for the short ride. Bellagio has a side entrance off of Flamingo, but it’s not applicable in this case. I’m assuming that traffic was very, very, very heavy.

The walk from Mirage to the Flamingo / Strip entrance of Bellagio is a pretty short walk. Unless it’s 100+ degrees out or you have health issues, I would have walked it. I often park across from the Mirage at Casino Royale and walk to visit locations ranging from Treasure Island to Bellagio (when visiting multiple properties at one time). The Strip is probably one of the most fun streets to walk anywhere in the world, and if you have gone too far, you can always catch a bus or cab back if you have to.

It is unfortunate to realize that for a few more dollars than that one cab ride cost, you could have rented a car for the whole day. If you are coming on a weekend or during a busy convention season when there is heavy traffic, those cab meters can really run while you sit in traffic.

Keep in mind that there is no cost of obligation to punch in your dates at http://www.travelnow.com/cars/search.jsp?cid=2005 and compare the prices of every rental car company. From there, you can make the call!

A year ago we had the crazy idea of a free weekly internet newsletter with our first-hand reviews as a companion to http://www.accessvegas.com We’ve come a way, as evidenced by our very first newsletter archived at https://las-vegas-news-reviews.com/99-05-20.htm In fact, to meet the demand for Las Vegas news on a daily basis, we started http://www.accessvegas.com and that site is now updated every 12 – 24 hours, 7 days a week with the best and latest stories that appeal to both tourists and locals alike!

We want to thank you for a great year, and for all the input whether bad or good! As our circulation grows, we garner more recognition from the hotels and gaming community. Over the next few months hope to offer a number of great contests and specials for free rooms, food, show tickets and more in conjunction with the hotels.

To help make this happen, we have a small favor to ask: We haven’t yet cracked the 10,000 subscriber mark and that is really the bulls eye we need to hit to offer the above. HURRY – As noted last week, the Bellagio public gallery viewings are coming to an end, and they pull the plug this Sunday so if you are in town this weekend, get over there in the morning to get your reservations for later in the day. HOT, HOT, HOT – Don’t even pack a sweater or a coat on your visit here until September or October. Monday we broke a record with 108 degrees and while it’s easing back a bit, it’s just not going to get cold for the next four months period. SHRIMP COCKTAIL – I’ve always been partial to our cheap shrimp cocktails and the Review-Journal hit the Strip and downtown, testing 8 of them. Although infamous for it’s 99 cent shrimp cocktail, the quality has been terrible the past few months. They also failed to note The Plaza’s 50 cent shrimp cocktail right across the street. All shrimp, no filler, crackers included.

ELLIS ISLAND – just behind Bally’s on Koval is having a Memorial Weekend bash this Saturday with all you can eat barbecue from 2-11 PM. For $10.95 you get baby back ribs, barbecue chicken, corn on the cob, cole slaw, and all their micro brew beer you can drink.

POOLSIDE BBQ – every Thursday evening at The Plaza from 6-10 PM. Admission is $10 for men, $2 for women and includes 1 free hot dog or hamburger and all you can drink free draft beer plus live music and a $500 cash drawing.

FEATURE STORY: Elvis-A-Rama

“Viva Las Vegas”! Few performers are as linked to this city as Elvis. You can still get married by “Elvis”, see performers doing Elvis tributes, and even catch the Flying Elvis jumpers made famous in the film “Honeymoon In Vegas.”

Now, thanks to Elvis collector Chris Davidson, you can actually get as close to the real thing as possible at the Elvis-A-Rama Museum. Just a couple of blocks from the Strip, this $3.5 million collection is like nothing else on earth.

After being greeted by Elvis in voice, you enter the museum area to see the music wall, showcasing every commercially released 45, EP, and LP ever recorded by the King along brief year-by-year history of his life.

This isn’t some small “county fair” type of display. The permanent museum has 8200 sq. feet full of memorabilia, including 3 cars and Elvis’ first speedboat. Among the cars are his 1955 black Cadillac limo reportedly used to haul guitars and drums between tour stops and ElvisÆ Glastron speedboat.

Displays are tastefully full of every kind of memorabilia imaginable! Record contracts, identification (including his signed Social Security card), address books, clothing, scarves, guns, sporting goods and much more. There are also interactive displays where the touch of a button plays various clips from interesting and important events in his life, including a 1968 TV special.

elvis-2.jpg (23539 bytes) His Army years are chronicled with one of only two Army trunks that he shipped back from Germany containing a set of his fatigues and 8 pages of personal, hand written correspondence between Colonel Parker and Elvis dated 1959 and 1960. You can feel the presence of Elvis through the many and varied personally scripted items. Not just a few autographed record jackets, but things like car insurance applications, the address book containing names and phone numbers of the likes of Natalie Wood, Nick Adam, and Colonel Tom Parker, and even an autographed pair of blue suede shoes.

Rings and jewelry are featured, both from his early days and more flashy (and expensive) diamond studded gold bands owned and worn by Elvis later in life. Also displayed and chronicled were items relating to his TCB motto (Taking Care of Business) which was the rally cry for his “Memphis Mafia” whom took care of what he needed, and quickly.

The museum houses a number of Elvis’ trademark jumpsuits, including the “Cisco Kid” black and green leather-trimmed one worn in 1971 that was pictured on the “He Touched Me” album sleeve. A recent purchase (and only on display for the rest of the summer) is the dark blue two-piece sleeveless jumpsuit with jewel-studded jacket and ornate blue leather belt that Elvis wore during performances at the Las Vegas Hilton in 1975.

The museum is open 10 AM – 6 PM daily. It is located at 3401 Industrial Rd. just behind the Fashion Show mall. Admission is a very reasonable $9.95 (NV residents and seniors $2 off, children under 12 free). As an added bonus, an live Elvis tribute by one Las Vegas’ noted impersonators plays almost every hour at the top of the hour. Call ahead (702) 309-7200 for show times. Glad you had a nice time. Renting a car is personal preference. I know people who refuse to do it (citing traffic, etc.) and others who won’t even think of going without (citing the easy valet parking, cost of cabs, and convenience).
