Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The snow in much of the US looks beautiful … especially from Las Vegas where it’s been 60-65 F all week! If you have ever visited in the summer and said “How do people live here” I have your answer: We never shovel snow or have an icy fender bender.

We are running late this week, so we’ll jump right in:

Cheap, Cheap, Cheap Rooms – National Finals Rodeo clears out on Dec. 15, leaving 10 days of pre-Christmas rock bottom room rates. You need an excuse to finish shopping early this year! Click to price Low Pre-Christmas Vegas Room Rates

Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn Update – We’ve been pelted with inquiries and frankly, there hasn’t been much word. Reports say that he may be home (out of the hospital) for Christmas, but that he is still in serious condition and not yet on solid food. He can write notes and is off the respirator. News is scarce to but we’ll let you know what we can.

NFR Tickets Available – Selected (many good and great) seats for National Finals Rodeo are available through our certified ticket broker. If you are coming to Las Vegas for the party, why not attend the actual event? National Finals Rodeo Premium Seating. As of press time, tickets are available starting at $45.00

Streaming Video Golf Lessons: Chipping – We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. This week: Lesson 3 – Chipping. Click to view lessons.

David Brenner – is starting a one year run at the new Westin Casuarina. Click for Westin Casurina info/rates and Brenner show tickets.

Las Vegas Bowl – on Christmas Eve pits Oregon State vs. New Mexico. Tickets available by calling 702-895-3900. Premium seating is also available: Las Vegas Bowl Premium Seating. Can’t make it? 4:30 PM local start on ESPN.

Casino Construction News – The Bourbon Street Hotel has applied for an expansion including a 32 story hotel tower. An unrelated company intends to build a resort on the site of Wet and Wild (between The Sahara and Riviera). In Las Vegas, seeing will be believing.

New Year’s Eve Las Vegas: Insider Tips

This year will be the biggest Las Vegas New Year’s ever, and that is no hype. Pyro Spectaculars has been hired to do a 13 minute show simultaneously stretching all four miles of The Strip from Excalibur to Stratosphere Tower.

The price tag? $500,000. The cost to you? Absolutely zero! For the first time, the fireworks will include a three minute countdown so you know it’s just about time to scream, yell, kiss, jump up and down … and ring in the new year.

We are your New Year’s Eve experts. Other resources may devote a page or two with generic info. We are on The Strip year after year, enjoying it, gathering first-hand advice, and taking photos and video for you!

Our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve Insider Tips and Info:

  • Index – Main page with links to all information.

  • Concerts and Indoor Events/Parties – Listed at the bottom of our December Entertainment Calendar for those who prefer indoor events.

  • Photos – from the past three years. Fireworks, crowds, crazies, couples and (of course) the girls!

  • Streaming Video – no charge to view streaming video of just about every aspect of our great celebration here in Las Vegas.

  • Hotel Tips – How to get the best rates, where to stay (whether or not you have a car), minimum stay requirements to watch for.

  • General Tips – Where on The Strip to be, where to park, weather, crowds (where they are thick and crazy, where there is elbow room and calm) and more.

  • Party Tips – Drinking (booze) container restrictions, how to avoid any trouble with the law, Mardi Gras beads, and more.

Send An E-Card – Get your friends excited to go (or show them what they will be missing). Every photo in our New Year’s Eve Photo Gallery (as well as all photos in our Las Vegas Photo Gallery) can be sent as an online email card.

Pyro Spectaculars is the same company doing the fireworks at the Olympics in Athens next year, so you know this will be a memory of a lifetime. Don’t miss it.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We know you are stuffed with Turkey, saw plenty or football and/or are out shopping your brains out the day after Thanksgiving (US). We’ll keep this issue short but it is perhaps our most important issue of the year.

For another year we are proud to be involved in David Berman’s Shade Tree Las Vegas Calendars event. This is a win-win that I encourage each and every reader to take part in: You get a beautiful 2004 Las Vegas calendar at a wholesale price with all proceeds going to Shade Tree Shelter, a shelter for woman and children.

David Berman is a retired attorney who moved to Las Vegas a few years ago from New England and he donates 100% of his time and effort. We’ll skip news and feedback this week so we can focus on this worthy cause. You get to help Shade Tree while lighting up the homes of yourself, friends, and family with Las Vegas for the next year!

New Year’s Eve – Next week, our big New Year’s Eve Las Vegas preview, but if you are thinking of going, don’t wait! Rooms get more scarce and expensive as December rolls around. This year will be the biggest ever: 13 minutes of fireworks shot from numerous hotels running the entire four miles of the Las Vegas Strip.

We are the only company with a complete special site dedicated to our first-hand experience of Las Vegas New Year’s Eve every year. Hotel tips, party tips, general tips, massive photo gallery, streaming videos of past fireworks and revelers …

Las Vegas Calendars Shade Tree Shelter Benefit

We are pleased to announce David BermanÆs ninth annual sale of Las Vegas calendars, with all profits to benefit The Shade Tree, which provides shelter and support services to homeless and battered women and their children in the Las Vegas area. (Click Here to jump to the sample photos)

These are the same calendars sold in Las Vegas hotels and gift shops. Our buyers through the years, more than half of whom are repeat customers, know that they are an inexpensive and well-received holiday gift for friends and co-workers, as well as excellent stocking-stuffers for their loved ones.

Each year of the project has produced record sales and donations. Sales exceeded 2,000 calendars last year for the first time ever, with 349 customers purchasing 2,016 calendars and raising $3,735 for Shade Tree.

At the request of Shade Tree, this will be the third straight year that sale profits will be applied to the purchase of discount bus tokens, which allow clients of non-profit organizations to use the local bus system for only 40 cents per ride. This unfunded item is critical in enabling Shade Tree clients to travel to job interviews, medical appointments, counseling sessions and classes.

Calendar pricing is unchanged from last year:

Orders of one or two calendars: $5.00 per calendar.

Orders of three or more calendars: $4.50 U.S. per calendar.

Prices include shipping and Shade Tree donation.

If you are in the Las Vegas area as a visitor or resident, personal delivery or pickup is available for just $3.00 per calendar.

The above prices are for payments in U.S. funds for orders shipped to U.S. addresses. Foreign buyers should e-mail for price on orders shipped to their countries.

If you operate a business and would like to give these calendars to your clients as gifts, attractive pricing on bulk orders is available.

By popular demand, PayPal is now available as a payment option.

The Shade Tree portion of all purchases is tax-deductible, and each buyer will be advised of the amount of deduction that can be claimed.

For detailed ordering instructions, please e-mail David: davidinlv@cox.net
David uses a permission-based spam filter, so just indicate why you are writing if you are queried, and David will release your message to him.

Here is the link to an August Las Vegas Review-Journal story that describes Shade TreeÆs plans for enhancements to its three-year-old facility just north of downtown Las Vegas.

http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2003/Aug-25-Mon-2003/news/22003167.html

WeÆre also pleased to tell you that David and his wife Rosalyn were honored for their work on behalf of the shelter with a 2003 Community Partnership Award at Shade TreeÆs annual Stars Luncheon on October 17. Other award winners included FitzgeraldÆs Hotel-Casino, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Perini Building Company, the MGM Mirage Voice Foundation, and the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! The national news has been chasing Michael Jackson all over town. Never a dull moment here.

Got a couple of great feedback emails this week:

Myron Shulman had me laughing with this one (regarding Treasure Island now calling itself TI): I also heard rumors that MGM/Mirage plans to re-do the Mirage motif. All references to the south seas, as well as tigers, will be removed. What will they do with the tigers? They will need to come-up with a new name, too. They probably will call it “MI” as it’s next to “TI”. They can call the area “Mi-Ti“.

Frank Coccho wrote: Your newsletter is the best….very helpful and informative; packed with ideas, hints, etc. Keep up the great work!!!!

Hello from Las Vegas! We’ve been playing hooky on getting the newsletter out. I’d like to tell you we’ve been around the pool relaxing, but actually we are hard at work on the next version of AccessVegas.Com.

Even more information, new look, better navigation, tons of contests and giveaways, and an expanded improved members section (still and always free). Should debut in January! If you have any suggestions you would like incorporated, please drop us a line: allvegastv@aol.com

Coming Concerts and Headliners – Lots and lots of great entertainment on the way. Book now online to lock up the best available tickets or call 800-696-5721 to book all Las Vegas hotels, shows, tours, golf, and dining:

Free Las Vegas Golf Lessons – and you can take them from anywhere in the world! We’ve teamed up with Revere Anthem Golf Club Director of Instruction Chris Eastman (in conjunction with ChefLive.com) and put together a series of eight streaming video golf tips.

Chris starts with fundamentals like aim and grip, and works through some of the finer points of the game. We’ll be posting a new lesson every week and reminding you here in the newsletter.

If you want to improve your game or just get a taste of Las Vegas golf, see the videos and learn more about Chris and The Revere at our Streaming Video Free Golf Lessons page. He is also available and highly recommended for private instruction.

X-Scream – thrill ride has opened on top of the Stratosphere Tower. X-Scream tilts you 30 feet over the edge as it plunges you toward the ground almost 1000 feet below! Hint: Buy the “all day pass” if you go up to ride the Stratosphere rides. For about the price of riding any of the rides thee or four times, you can go again and again and again. And if you are like me, you’ll want to!

Sirens of TI – has replaced the old Pirate Show at Treasure Island. OK, ok … we are supposed to call it TI. The show is supposed to be better than the previous one. The “new” TI is supposed to be young and hip like The Palms or Hard Rock. I think the less-than-tepid applause after a recent “Sirens” show said it all.

The new Sirens are great eye candy for the guys (I enjoyed that part), but trying to do a short form production show using props meant for a previous show to an audience too far away to enjoy the subtleties fell a little flat. But hey … the price is right: Free performances nightly at 6:00, 8:00, and 10:00 p.m.

MGM-Mirage is reportedly considering doing away with the Mirage’s south seas theme. What look are they going to go after? Green Valley Ranch? Hey … their executives are making more than I am so they must know something I don’t.

New Year’s Eve Concerts – The list is getting longer and longer, and we are posting them as we get the news. Check out our December 2003 Entertainment Calendar. What … you don’t know how hot New Year’s Eve is here in Las Vegas? We have the insider tips, and plenty of free photos and streaming video from past years on our Las Vegas New Year’s Eve site!

Veterens Eat Free McCormick & Schmick’s is offering all veterans free lunch or dinner (designated menu itens, served with coffee or tea) this Tuesday Nov. 11 in celebration of Veteren’s Day. Veterens ID or discharge papers required. You can reserve ahead at 702-836-9000. McCormick & Schmick’s is a fine dining restaurant. Watch Executive Chef John Botkin prepare one of their famous dishes and take a peek via streaming video: Dial-Up or Broadband

Top Restaurants – Michael Politz, publisher of Food and Beverage Magazine recently appeared on Extra TV, highlighting some of the great restaurants of Las Vegas. Click to watch.

New Mandalay Bay Tower – is already gracing the sky (under construction). Simply called The Hotel, this 43 story tower will feature softer colors and a south seas theme. (Hmmmm … the same theme Mirage is thinking of dumping). A restaurant and lounge on top will be open to the public and feature a stunning Strip view. The hotel will have it’s own check in area and two restaurants (including a 24/7 coffee shop) essentially creating a stand alone hotel.

Video Spotlight – We are always adding new streaming video to our All Vegas TV site, over 100 Las Vegas videos to date! This week, we feature video of the Ambassador Strip Travelodge. Who? What? A Motel 6???

No … no, no, no! Set against the MGM and Tropicana hotels, this inn is a couple minute walk from The Strip, free airport and convention shuttle, complimentary continental breakfast, and even wireless broadband around the pool. Check out a fun, humorous look this property for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

Hello from Las Vegas! Glad to report that Roy (Siegfried and Roy) Horn is stable and recovering. Medical news is limited, and he will have a long road to recovery, but things seem to look positive.

Been a fun week here! We enjoyed the opening of the Hot Rod Grille in Henderson, which drew a variety of revelers including The Amazing Jonathan, La Cage star Frank Marino, the ever-present Monti Rock, and a host of local celebs.

Wednesday night none other than Lance Burton turned up to see Twin Keys (see feature story) at Harrah’s La Playa Lounge. He signed a couple autographs, we said hello, and he settled in to enjoy the evening.

Soon after, two birthday girls got the special treatment as they sat on the baby grand pianos while all the men in the room were summoned to come to the state, get down on bended knee, and sing You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling a la Top Gun. Just part of the fun and wackiness of a dueling pianos show! Little did these lucky ladies know that one of their serenaders was Lance, down on a knee singing and having fun with everyone else.

Lance will be on Hollywood Squares the first week of December, and we’ll remind you as it gets closer.

Dueling Piano Twins At Harrah’s

Twin Keys is the only all-female dueling pianos show in the world. Even more amazing is that Twin Keys is identical twins blazing on identical grand pianos!

The twins, Kimberley and Tamara Pinegar, take the stage and have you laughing and singing along in no time. In keeping with the tradition of the ôdueling pianosö genre, the show is a high-energy, all-request, rocking, sing-along that incorporates audience participation and comedy (rated PG or R depending on the venue). Audience members are encouraged to get up and dance, as well!

The twins have been playing piano and singing since the age of six. They began touring as singer/dancers with a national corporate entertainment company. They fronted thirteen to fifteen-piece show bands at events and parties all over the world, including Super Bowl and Olympic events, parties in Barcelona, Maui, Cancun, Munich, Bahamas, Japan and Grand Cayman, not to mention most US states.

The twins have performed at parties for Reebok, Time, Sports Illustrated, Playboy TV NFL, NHL, Anheuser Busch, and the casts of televisionÆs Ally McBeal, The Practice, The Wonder Years and Picket Fences.

In 2000, Kimberley and Tamara decided to fuse their singing, dancing and comedy experience with piano to develop a dueling pianos show. Wonder Twin Powers Activate! Within six months, the brand new Twin Keys Dueling Piano Show was picked up by Disney Cruise Line and by dueling pianos clubs from the east to west coasts.

In February of this 2003, the show was brought to Harrah’s Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Twin Keys performs Tuesday through Saturday at 9 PM in La PLaya Lounge inside Harrah’s.

Kimberley and Tamara began playing piano duets at the age of six, but they had to share the family piano. Now they each have their own grand piano, so watch out ù ItÆs a duel you donÆt want to miss!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas. Usually I end that phrase with an exclamation point, but the serious injury of Siegfried and Roy’s Roy Horn has cast a dark cloud over Las Vegas this week.

I delayed this issue because so much uncertainly and conjecture surrounded this incident, Roy’s health, the future of the show, and more. The basics have been broadcast worldwide, but many questions have continued to pour in.

Instead of trying to relay this information, I have provided links to both print and video stories straight from local news sources so you can get the very best and latest information on this tragedy.

Other Tiger ShowsThe Illusionary Magic of Rick Thomas just celebrated six years at The Tropicana. We were pleased to be guests at this event, and treated to the latest version of this outstanding show which also features tigers. That review was to run this week, but we felt it would be tainted by the current events. We will publish it soon.

Dirk Arthur also uses the big cats in his act. We enjoyed his show a few months ago, and he has moved from the Silverton to The Plaza hotel downtown. Both are great shows and we encourage you to check one or more out in lieu of Siegfried and Roy.

Featured Stories:
Tabu Ultra Lounge, Shady Grove Lounge

Here’s a couple of brief stories on two relatively new local lounges. Tabu at MGM absolutely appeals to the upscale tourist crowd. Shady Grove at Silverton is a retro, fun, comfortable lounge aimed at the local’s crowd but worth checking out for tourists as well.

Tabu Ultra Lounge – What is an “ultra lounge?” This is something out of a James Bond movie … 10 years from now! This upscale lounge doesn’t have a bar band in it. We are talking about a classic comfortable feel with couches and tables combined with some incredible modern touches.

DJ’s spin modern dance music, but at a volume you can talk over. If you want to dance, go “next door” to Studio 54. A cool feature is the bar and tables. They look granite. No, they look tile. No … now there is a picture of a nude woman moving along the bar. Images are projected on these surfaces that seem real as life, but evolve before your eyes.

Nobody’s out front handing out coupons for this place. It is one of those “if you have to ask when it opens, when it closes, or how much anything costs … go elsewhere” establishments. For the record, it opens around 10 PM and goes all night long. Table service requires bottle purchase (and often reservations). Cover is $15 for men and free for ladies. While they claim dress is “casual” (saw a guy in a golf shirt and shorts), when you are spending for this kind of atmosphere, dress up.

Tabu Ultra Lounge is located inside the MGM Grand.

Shady Grove Lounge – “Gas, Food, and Lounging” is the motto of this new lounge at The Silverton. Just a few minutes south of The Strip, The Silverton Hotel Casino is undergoing a major renovation and upgrade. The former cowboy theme catering to the snowbird crowd is being changed to more of a retro, Route 66 Southwestern adventure feel.

When I moved here over ten years ago, the Silverton was called Boomtown and it was just off the freeway in the middle of nowhere. The growth of the valley now has the location surrounded by mid-level and upscale housing and the Silverton is making a strong grab at south Vegas Valley residents.

From the looks of it, they are succeeding nicely. Shady Grove is a combination upscale sports bar and lounge set in a faux hunting lodge setting with dark wood and stone features. While open to the casino, the area envelopes you and makes you feel like you’ve walked into another dimension.

Miniature bowling is housed in a vintage full-length Air Stream trailer complete with an Elvis bumper sticker on the back. The bar has the prerequisite huge flat screen TV’s not only over the bar but near the solo pool table, assuring that you’ll catch almost every play of every game simultaneously.

However, lounging areas away from the bars and TV’s let you sit down relax with a drink and friends. The female bar and cocktail staff sport sexy, skin and cleavage baring brown leather outfits and go out of their way to be fun, flirty, and friendly.

While strongly after the local’s crowd, tourists will enjoy the new sexy, retro, fun Shady Grove Lounge. Lounge is open 24/7 although food, cocktail waitress service, and miniature bowling may not be available at all hours inside the lounge. Happy hour specials are from 4-8 PM, Tuesday – Saturday.

Shady Grove Lounge is located in the Silverton Hotel Casino.

Desert Lake Escape

Editor’s Note: We usually cover shows and entertainment, but with our warm Las Vegas fall weather this is a perfect time to enjoy the beautiful desert mountains and Lake Mead.
Guest columnist Jean Strickland’s Las Vegas Day Trips offers easy to follow maps & information on great sightseeing for tourists & great escapes for locals. We present her Desert Lake Escape.

Don’t be a Loser!! No one wants to be a loser in Las Vegas. Let me show you some great places where you’ll always be a winner!

We’ll start by traveling east along Lake Mead Blvd. – – past houses, stores, and apartments until – suddenly – civilization ends! Nothing but bare mountain looms over us! Through the mountain pass, like a door into another room, we’ll go. Now, in the distance of just a few hundred feet, we have left the city behind and entered the open desert! Within this narrow pass is a large stone plaque explaining a geological wonder – “The Great Unconformity.” A sign explains how the mountain in front of us was once hundreds of miles away! Along our journey we’ll discover beauty, tranquility and — the other side of Vegas!

Let’s start at one of my favorite spots, the fascinating desert oasis of Rogers Springs. Mother Nature’s handiwork provides this lovely fresh water spring which bubbles up happily from the base of a small mountain. The spring keeps a little pond alive with clear water and quenches the thirst of desert animals. We watch a father with his two young boys wading in the knee deep pool and chasing after tiny fish with cupped hands. The speeding fish outwit the young visitors who are delighted just to enjoy the chase! Another family indulges in a shady picnic under a cluster of palms.

We’ll cross the little bridge, stroll along a trail, and follow, with our eyes, the path the flowing water takes as it leaves the sparkling pool and wanders it’s way down, down, down to join the cool waters of Lake Mead, visible in the distance. Ah, an authentic oasis, created by Mother Nature to care for her creations. Man often imitates these beautiful spots, but never does them full justice. Aren’t you happy you’re here! Why not come back with someone you love. Treat yourself to a picnic or just wander a path or two. Escape the ringing phones and stresses of the city. Mother Nature is waiting here to make you a winner!

There’s a little fish hatchery along the shore of Lake Mead. Let’s make a short stop. We’ll walk down the stairs and out back to the fish runs and watch the fish dart around in the water. I’m glad we arrived at feeding time! Staff members toss fish food pellets into the water, which churns and bubbles as the hungry fish compete for their share. Doesn’t it look just like a Jacuzzi! The fish are used to stock the lake, maybe we’ll come back for a little fishing trip someday. Ah, Mother Nature provides for us, her creations.

I’m in the mood for a hike, how about you? Let’s follow the marked trail down into the Las Vegas Wash. Our trail begins on flat, hard, dry terrain and seems to disappear off the edge of nowhere. As we get closer, see how it takes us down into the canyon that has been fashioned by the rushing waters of the wash. I love the contrasts of nature! As far as we can see the desert appears parched and barren. But, along the waters edge, trees and plants flourish. Birds and animals hunt and play in their unique, lush home. There are so many hikes to choose from, this is only one!

Let me show you one of the breathtaking lake overlooks. I brought some sandwiches and we’ll have an impromptu picnic! To stand above the waters of the lake and overlook its stark, barren shores is an exhilarating experience! I wish we could see in every direction at the same time! Don’t you feel like your eyes are straining to take in as large a view as humanly possible? I love the brilliant blue of the desert sky, the colors of the land – red, gold, black and tan, the ability to breathe in deeply and know the air is clean!

And at night the view is no less fantastic! All the stars we usually miss, blocked out by the city lights, sparkle above our heads. Look, can you see the big dipper right there? We miss the stars in the city! Wonder if there will be a meteor shower tonight? Ah, Mother Nature made this all for you. See what a winner you are!

Well, the time has come to return to our responsibilities. Did you enjoy our Desert Lake Escape? Why not go back! Do some of the things we missed. Enjoy the uninterrupted companionship of your family or friends as you rent a boat, take a dinner cruise or visit the beach! Get away from exhaust, noise, crowds and daily stress — take a Desert Lake Escape! Visit our website www.theothersideofvegas.com and you will discover where you can find – great sightseeing for tourists – and great escapes for locals! You’ll always be a winner when you do!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! I was one of the privileged guests at a gaming writer’s party put on by Compton-Dancer Consulting this past week. What made it special? This exclusive event was held in the Sky Villa’s of the Las Vegas Hilton. Yes, the same ones you have seen on the Travel Channel.

No, they aren’t as nice as they look on TV. They are 20 times nicer! Mind-bendingly luxurious almost beyond earthly compare. I understand you can stay there is you have close to $20,000 a night, or a few million to gamble.

Great writers with great books that I met and can recommend first hand:

Hello AOL Users! – If you use AOL, you haven’t seen us for a few months (or not at all if you’ve signed up the past few months). In AOL’s quest to block spam, they blocked the vast majority of email newsletters, across the board.

Our biggest complaint the past five months? AOL subscribers saying “I’m not getting your newsletter anymore.” Once we found this out, we applied for accepted status. They were great about getting it taken care of, and we are thrilled to see so many new and old friends again.

What is a Scinta? – Only one of the longer running acts in town now! And with good reason: This family act is a must-see. In fact, see a streaming preview for yourself: Dial-Up or Broadband

New Year’s Eve – From last week, many asked about what various organized events happen for New Year’s Eve. We’ll start receiving that info soon, and let you know. The “big” party is actually in the middle of The Strip, totally closed to traffic as a four mile long fireworks display goes off! We have the scoop at Las Vegas New Year’s Eve. Vegas Nights Helicopter Flight

Maverick Helicopter Vegas Strip – I recently took the opportunity to ride with Maverick Helicopters for one of their stunning night tours over The Las Vegas Strip. On board were a small group of great people from all over, two of whom were celebrating their second anniversary!

Don’t wait for a special occasion to try this out. Even though I live here, and am pretty jaded to the brightly lit strip, my jaw drops on this ride.

This isn’t like being on top of the Stratosphere, or craning your neck toward the airplane window as you fly in. The wrap-around windows of the helicopter give every rider a spectacular, unparalleled view of our beautiful Las Vegas Strip.

The ride takes you all the way: From the very bottom of The Strip (south of Mandalay Bay), past the Stratosphere, to the Fremont St. Experience experience downtown and over the light show and hotels of “Old Vegas.” You fly about 1000 feet off the ground, high enough to see everything smoothly move before your eyes but close enough to enjoy the details.

As you move past all of the brightly lit hotels and the beauty of their entire properties, the odds are you’ll catch the Mirage Volcano, Bellagio Fountains and maybe even the Fremont St. Light Show … from overhead!

Worried about heights? This isn’t a thrill ride, nor designed to be one. Maverick has a perfect safety record, the best helicopters, and most experienced (but informative and fun) pilots. Leather seats, heat and air, elbow room, and a wrap around vista make this a highlight of your trip.

Beware; some companies sell discounted Strip helicopter tours and they basically take you up in a small circle and you are done before it started. You get what you pay for, and Maverick gives you your money’s worth. Whether a first time visitor, your “once in a lifetime” Vegas trip, or you drive in every month, this should be a “must do” on your next trip.

Reserve early. This popular sightseeing flight can fill up well in advance.

Carrot Top – I finally checked out Carrot Top on the invite of his local PR staff. He’s been headlining here for years, and all I knew about him was his Jay Leno appearances and the phone commercials that seem to play non-stop. Was I ever happy to finally check him out live!

A prop comedian, Carrot Top’s stage is filled with trunks and trunks of gags. Sounds like it would get boring after five minutes? Not even. This skilled performer rarely let up, with gag after gag after gag that had the audience laughing non-stop for the entire performance. Nothing was off-limits, from politics to NASCAR to poking fun of the very hotel he was performing at.

The show is PG-13 because of a little bit of language, but nothing that will make anyone blush. And he pulls off his entire show without getting into raunchy humor, making this the perfect fun show to take your teenagers or even Grandma to. Carrot Top plays now through September 17 at the MGM Grand. Catch him this time, but if you can’t we’ll remind you before his next headlining run.

Greens Of Las Vegas – Want some golf, but don’t want to take up hours of your vacation time or travel miles from The Strip? We had a great time at the Greens of Las Vegas, close to The Strip and just south of the Hard Rock Hotel.

Imagine a top-notch golf course minus the fairways. Hole after hole of challenging but fun putting greens outdoors in a beautiful setting. This isn’t mini-golf, but carries a couple great advantages: You can enjoy the course in about an hour, and the non-golfers in your group can still play and enjoy this experience because no fairway driving is involved.

The greens has a full pro shop, and a comfortable, upscale “19’th hole” restaurant and bar called Bogee’s. A full golf experience that doesn’t eat up your entire vacation!

Check out the Greens of Las Vegas website for more information, and a couple of great money saving coupons. With the perfect, warm fall Las Vegas weather at hand, we had a great time and you will too on your next trip!

Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Maverick Las Vegas Wins Travel Channel Awards! – Our friends at Maverick Helicopter Tours were selected by the Travel Channel as having not only one, but two of the Top Ten World’s Best Helicopter Thrills. They were the only company to nail two slots in the top 10.

Labor Day Rooms – It’s not to late to book a room and party three days here in Las Vegas! And if you can’t join us then, keep in mind that summer is just beginning here. Average high temperatures:

September: 94
October: 81
November: 66

Summer doesn’t have to end if you check out our discount room specials. Plus guys … psssst: Football season plus legal sports betting plus our fabulous sports books make fall the exciting time of year! (And ladies, what better excuse to do some shopping if he’s spending his travel “allowance” at the sports book).

Vegas Flood – You probably saw shots of Las Vegas washing away last week. The flood was severe, but only in the far Northwest of our valley. Far away from any areas the average tourist will ever visit (30+ minute drive from The Strip).

Unlike the tourism areas, the far Northwest is still growing , meaning lots of open land and uncompleted flood control. You can view photos: KLAS TV 2003 Flood Gallery

Hello, I am a new member and I must say that I am impressed with the hard work that went into making this site exciting and helpful. My husband and I are planning a second honeymoon possibly next year to celebrate our 2nd honeymoon he is 44 and I am 43.

We may be older but we love still to do young things such as dance and listen to oldies 70 & 80’s we are not that old. BUT we feel we may be uncomfortable at some of the clubs that we have seen posted on here as well as advertised, can u tell us if there is a place for older yet not fossils men and women can go and let their hair down as we say.

We are considering either MGM or NYNY or Mirage, which is my personal favorite. We will be there for 10 days and nine nights, and are also seeking a on strip small wedding chapel to renew our vows, can u at all anyone be of help to us.

OK members, all hands on deck! I gave her a few of my suggestions in our Travel Questions/Trip Suggestions forum. With all of our varied reader experiences, I’m sure we can find nine days of great suggestions for them as well as some wedding chapel suggestions. Post away!

Due to work schedules and great discounts on air travel and hotels during Christmas that make going to Las Vegas affordable, we come here each year during this time. It seems that most all of the shows we want to see are dark.

Last year we were disappointed when such shows as Skintight, Penn and Teller, Folies Bergere, and Scintas, just to name a few, were all dark. We realize there is lots to do in Vegas, and that performers are entitled to have vacations, but do shows ever vary their schedules and switch vacation days? Will any of these shows be available during this time of year, or are we condemned forever never to see many of these hot shows in Vegas?

Vacationing the 10 days before Christmas is a double-edge sword. It is the lowest demand time of the year, offering dirt cheap room rates and plenty of elbow room here in Las Vegas. The downside is that most shows close. Partly because of the lack of tourists in town, and partly because many of the tourists who do visit before Christmas are budget minded with no interest in spending on a show.

Let us suggest making a second visit on the summer (or alternating every year). August heat brings fairly low room rates, but the shows are in full swing! As always, use our Vegas Show Search and Headliner/Concerts Calendar to play check out what is playing during your trip here.

7 of us stayed at the Lady Luck last month and were pleased. We felt comfortable gambling, dining, and sleeping. The hotel is not fast paced. I liked being able to walk right out my hotel room to the pool. 5 of us stayed in the Garden rooms and the 2 honeymooners stayed in the tower room with a Jacuzzi. Their room was fancy, rate was reasonable, and had an awesome view. We would all definitely stay there again.

We have some active posts about downtown going on in our Downtown/Fremont St. Experience forums. Join in with questions or share your experiences.
