Newkirk’s Notes – comments on Las Vegas from AccessVegas.Com publisher Ted Newkirk:

Hello from Las Vegas! We are seeing great summer weather with highs barely hitting 100 and lows in the 70’s. Days by the pool in our dry heat, and perfect weather for the late night, all night long!

We have been on a three week break, so this issue is three times as jammed. Let’s get started!

Fireworks On The Fourth – Once again this year, the Stratosphere Tower Hotel Casino will have a fireworks display at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip. Remember … The Strip bends in the middle. If you are south of The Venetian, you might have trouble seeing it. Go north!

Other displays for locals happen all over the valley. Check the paper for listings (While locals enjoy our newsletter, we try not to overwhelm tourist readers with piles of local interest listings available in the local paper).

Here’s a locals tip: From the parking lot of The Suncoast, you can see virtually every display in town. Don’t forget, dusk here is early because we are on the eastern edge of Pacific Time. It is dark here by 9 PM and the fireworks start soon after.

Monorail Opening!?! – They now claim that the monorail is going to open July 15. I hope so, but don’t hold your breath. Operation will be 8 AM to Midnight for the first 60 days, then a permanent 6 AM to 2 AM. (Co’mon … since it doesn’t go to the airport, who is going to be on it at 6 AM? How about 8 AM to 4 AM. The Las Vegas Strip is often alive until 3 or 4 AM). $3 each way, and they will have multi-day and multi-ride passes will be available for purchase. Price not set.

No Comdex!!! – This was the best news I’ve heard in a while. Comdex usually comes to town for a week in November, jamming most available hotel rooms, driving up prices. The attendees tend not to go to shows (they prefer strip clubs), so many of the shows take the week off.

With our temperate November weather, many visitors want to visit but get locked out (or pay high room prices, have to deal with crowds, and lack of available shows). November is a beautiful time to be in Las Vegas and now the average tourist isn’t locked out!

La Femme

á

La Femme recently revamped their Las Vegas show with seven new numbers, new lighting, and a larger, more versatile stage. La Femme (pronounced “La Fahm”) is an exact replica of the acclaimed show Crazy Horse in Paris, famous for its productions celebrating beautiful women and the art of the nude since 1951. Taking a chance to improve on a great product is a challenge (can anyone say New Coke), but the revamped show steps La Femme up another notch.
Since the debut of the US version of three years ago, La Femme has ranked among the top of the Las Vegas entertainment chain. Sensual and classy with an international flair, and well worth the ticket price. However, Las Vegas is it’s own animal and the previous incarnation was perhaps a little too retro, lacking some of the “wow” that people expect in Las Vegas entertainment.
The challenge? “Vegas” it up without losing the integrity of the original Crazy Horse Paris production. The tradition of natural looking youthful performers was kept intact, with new choreography and a combination of light effects and projections that create a moving canvas of skin. The kaleidoscope of colors and designs dancing across the performers is a treat to the eyes.
Gone are the “silent movie” projections between each number. Instead, one of the 13 performers comes out in a unique dance while a voice tells us of her characters personality, quirks, and interests. This not only accomplished giving the show a nicer flow, but made La Femme even more female friendly. This is not a strip club, nor is it crass. By giving each dancer a character all her own, a woman can relate to the personality and have a kinship sensuality with particular performers.
The technical aspect of the show has been enhanced on all levels. Music by renowned French producer Laurent Gueneau, and one-of-a-kind couture costumes by accomplished fashion designer Gaspard Yurkievich combine with a larger, more versatile stage to really let the productions live and breath. While a certain needed rigid flair associated with the show still exists, the audiences eyes and ears now drink in a more resounding spectacle.
La Femme performs nightly at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., dark Tuesdays. Guests must be at least 18 years of age to attend the show. Tickets include show program.
